  2. After years of research and finally making up my mind to make the choice to improve my quality of life. I am starting to feel this will NEVER happen..and I am bombed about it. I have been waiting for this surgery for years now. I did my research and decided on which I wanted and I made up my mind do have gastric bypass. At the time the insurance I had did not cover bariatric surgery. I swicted jobs a few years later and FINALLY the ins co I had would cover... I made up my mind to have surgery! I called my insurance company to see what was necessary I was told that my plan did NOT require the supervised weight loss. My surgeon's office was told them same thing. In January 2015 I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, so of course wls was put on the back burner. I am over that and all healed up so I go back to my weight loss journey. I get to one of my last appts last week (Nutrition) and was advised that I my insurance requires me to be on a 6 mo medically supervised weight loss plan...WHAT?!!!!! I know that a lot of people have to do this so when I 1st called my insurance company to see what was necessary I specifically asked that question and I was told that my plan did NOT require the supervised weight loss. My surgeon's office was told them same thing. I really wanted to get this done this year because I have met my annual deductible and the surgery would be covered by my insurance co 100%. ..a 6 month diet plan means I wont be done until December. Which will probably push my approval (surgery) into 2016..I can not afford to pay the high deductibles and fees. I am sooo disappointed and hurt. I was really beginning to accept this was going to happen...I am crushed...devastated!! I just want off this ride. Hopefully something can be worked out somehow...but if not...I am afraid that the "life" I have now is what is as good as it is going to get. has this happened to ANYONE else or does anyone know about how long the approval process takes???

    Slow Loss At the Beginning

Hi guys I am also losing really slow (3 months, 16 days and counting) and as of yesterday I was back to only losing 7 kilos ( from 10 kg - I blame the heat wave in melbourne). I have to admit, I feel a twinge of pain in my new stomach every time I read how many pounds other people are losing ( specially since you all write in pounds which is like .5 kilo so for a second before i convert is like WOW!!!! what am i doing wrong!!???? that is, besides eating pretty much all I want in portions larger than I would like to and enjoying every morsel.....)) Ok, I am off track, what I came to say is that of course we shouldnt be tempted into comparing our progress to others', we are all in the race to get to the finish line, nobody is timing it tho, so we are not competing with each other. Now, my mantra if you like, this time around ( after hundreds of diets) has changed to quality not quantity, in every sense. I want to lose weight while enjoying every day, every meal, and with NO concern of how much faster i could do it if I applied myself to the task at hand. After all, this time around, it is NOT a diet. I am finally making changes that have to last for the rest of my life. Every diet before: pills, shots, starvation, protein, carb, no carb, low carb, grapefruit, rice and melon, cabagge soup, etc, etc, were about how fast i could lose as much as possible before I lost the ability to keep up the madness and go back to .... well, eating like fat me. Now, my will power (so to speak) is not going away after 6 weeks of hunger! So I am enjoying every day that the scales go down a little bit ( hopefully the heat wave will be over soon Sorry I tend to go on and on and on.... tellie ps, I am soooo looking forward to my next fill on thursday I only have .5 ml in at the moment which means, well... lots of food!

    Slow Loss At the Beginning

Hi, I also started rather slowly, but now after 6 months and 3 fills, I've lost about 75 pounds!!! So, as you've read before, just be patient and let yourself heal and slowly get used to this new way of life. Once you start getting some fills and restriction, you should be well on your way to a decent weight loss. The ONLY complaint I had about my pre-surgery meetings and information from my doctor was that he didn't stress to me how I probably would NOT lose weight right at first. I, like many others, came out of surgery thinking....."OKAY!! Let's start LOSING!!" But in reality it took a couple months before things really started happening. I would have felt better emotionally if someone (my doctor!) had told me this was "normal" so I wouldn't have gotten so impatient and frustrated at first. So, difficult as it may be, just hang in there, do what your doctor tells you, get some fills, then go shopping for smaller clothes!! It will happen!!

In July my weight was 300.0 ... Im 5'9". August 30 started my pre-op diet at 294. My surgery was Friday September 14 at 08:00 and this morning, Tuesday Sept 18 i weigh 274.8! Trying to get in the clear liquids 30cc at a time and doing well. I can only get up to walk; no reaching or bending/squatting or i get terribly dizzy and nauseated. Diet consists of room temp crystal light, room temp water, and warm chicken broth. I think i am doing really well considering i only need my pain medicine about every 8 hours. Yesterday, i went with my mom to walmart. I rode the handicap cart and kept a nausea pill in my pocket just in case... But i didnt need it. I was glad to get out of the house!! Dr visit is next Tuesday so i guess ill update by then. I sure hope my sleeve friends on here are doing well too!!
  6. I really wish I'd seen this article before having the crapband surgery! Just found this posted on OH... sleep apnea). Data Sources and Study Selection - Electronic literature search of MEDLINE, Current Contents, and the Cochrane Library databases plus manual reference checks of all articles on bariatric surgery published in the English language between 1990 and 2003. Two levels of screening were used on 2738 citations. Data Extraction - A total of 136 fully extracted studies, which inluded 91 overlapping patient populations (kin studies), were included for a total of 22,094 patients. Nineteen percent of the patients were men and 72.6% were women, with a mean age of 39 years (range, 16-64 years). Sex was not reported for 1537 patients (8%). The baseline mean body mass index for 16 944 patients was 46.9 (range, 32.3-68.8). Data Synthesis - A random effects model was used in the meta-analysis. The mean (95% confidence interval) percentage of excess weight loss was: 47.5% (40.7%-54.2%) for patients who underwent gastric banding; 61.6% (56.7%-66.5%), gastric bypass; 68.2% (61.5%-74.8%), gastroplasty (VSG); and 70.1% (66.3%-73.9%), biliopancreatic diversion or duodenal switch. Operative mortality (</=30 days) in the extracted studies was 0.1% for the purely restrictive procedures, 0.5% for gastric bypass, and 1.1% for biliopancreatic diversion or duodenal switch. Conclusions - Effective weight loss was achieved in morbidly obese patients after undergoing bariatric surgery. A substantial majority of patients with diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea experienced complete resolution or improvement.

    A Leak????

Hello, my name is Christy. I had the Lap-Band sugery 04/30/2008 and have been going through the "routine" ever since. My first fill was 2 cc, then 1 cc, then another 1 cc. So after my 4th cc, I went back a month later to get another 1cc injected. At that appointment, things didn't seem to go right. The Nurse Practitioner seemed to have difficulty accessing my port. The site she entered was totally off from where it was done previously. So, I left the office thinking I have 5 cc's. So, I go to my appointment in Oct. thinking I'm doing ok but my weight stayed the same. So, she wants to inject another cc. When she withdraws the fluid already in plus the one she's gonna give me, it was a total of 5! So somewhere along the way, I lost a cc. She didn't seem worried, so naturally, I wasn't either. Now, today, I go for yet another fill. I weighed the same AGAIN! Now, she's thinking it's me. I could tell by the look on her face. We went through what and how I normally eat and she said we'll go ahead and give you another cc. So, she injected 1 cc AGAIN. We then were chatting for a minute and she said to me, let me check for a leak. So, now, theorectically, I'm supposed to have 6 cc's. Well, when she drew back, wouldn't you know. There was only 4!!! Know on Thursday, I have to go to the hospital to have a fluroscopy x-ray taken to see what the deal is. I guess I'm just a little frustrated and upset. My surgical experience wasn't the best. I had TREMENDOUS gas pain post-op and am not looking forward to that again. Is there anyone who have had any similar experiences and words of encouragement????? PLEASE HELP!!! :willy_nilly:

    Merry Christmas from Aruba

How'd we ever get out of such a wonderful habit? The last 10 years my two sons were living at home we left the day after Christmas and spent a week in the Islands, then along came grandkids and no more Christmas trips. Hmmmm, maybe it was really due to my weight and the grandkids were just a good excuse, time to get back into that old tradition.
  12. I just peeked into the excercise and fitness section and noticed far less post than in the post op section. Most of us who had the band were not exactly what you call gym gurus before we were banded, hence we gained weight which pushed us into morbid obesity! Im saying this in the most non judgmental way possible WE MUST EXERCISE! I know some have never even entered a gym, thats ok, there is still time to join, if not at least power walk/jog for 30 minutes a day. This post was as much for me as it is for those who are struggling with excercising! Good Luck and lets continue to encourage each other in this area!

You really can't compare your weight loss to other being that everyone starts at a different level and everyone body is different. The heavier you are the fast you lose at first. So just trying to get more Protein and liquid to keep your energy up!! Good luck! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I am newby, for a year i've been wanting to this surgery. My doctor just tells me to loose weight on my own... I am 250lbs 5'4 and have been overweight 10+. How do you get your doctor to approve this surgery?
  16. :wub:Hi out there, I am getting ready to have a lap band on jan 8th . i had a gastric bypass in 2004 and lost 50 lbs in about a year. since then i had 2 babies and kept some weight from each of them and i noticed it was creeping up again. my pre surgery heaviest weight was 245. i am almost back there and really frustrated, upset and feel like i failed myself. Has anyone had a lapband after gastric bypass?? ps i was surprised the insurance co. approved it.
  17. Hi my name is Dawn. I have been struggling with my weight since my early 20's when I became pregnant with my first child. After that my weight just kept getting heavier and heavier. I tried every diet you could imagine. Sure it worked for a few months and then I would spiral out of control and gain all of my weight back and then some. In 2001 I had open heart surgery for an Aortic Aneurysm. They also replaced my valve. At the time I had a pigs valve which only lasts for about 10 years. I chose this because I really didn't want to take blood thinner for the rest of my life because I was only 34. So soon I will need another open heart surgery. So my cardiologist told me that if I didn't lose the weight, I could wind up dieing on the table. That was my wake up call. I was not going to leave my 2 children (even though they are grown now), one of them having Down Syndrome. In April of 2009 I decided to attend a seminar. Then in May was the start of my 6 month journey before I had my lapband surgery. I then found out that I was borderline everything (diabetes, fatty liver, cholesterol, Sleep Apnea..etc.) On October 23, 2009 I had my surgery and it was the best thing that I could have done for myself. The only thing that I regret is not getting it done sooner. I am no longer borderline anything. And today I was told that I no longer have sleep Apnea and can get rid of my CPAP machine. I AM SO HAPPY!!! You know it's the small things in life that amaze me. Things that you miss when you are heavy. Like being able to cross your legs, tie your shoes, pick up things off the floor, being able to walk without having to stop over and over again. And most of all having people including your family come up to you and say, "I didn't recognize you. You look so good!" If I had to do this all over again I would do it in a heart beat. I went from 304 to 217. I have 34lbs to go until goal. I went from a size 26 to a 14. And I haven't been this size since 1989. My self esteem is back and I feel very good about myself.

    New patient

You sound like you would do just great with the surgery! I like the way you acknowledged already making changes in your diet. That tells me you already understand the surgery is just a tool (albeit a very effective one) to lose the weight and have a chance of keeping most of it off. It's completely normal to be scared and nervous. I would be worried if you weren't. But I can almost guarantee you won't regret the decision down the road. Good luck and keep us posted!

    Previous weightloss surgery

Hello' previously had banding (1986) the old un-adjustable type....it slipped and erroded over the years....I had it removed on 4-24-07....since then I have gained about 44 lbs..have GERD/w hiatal hernia....Podiatrist want to do surgery for heel spurs and because of this my knee has know gone lame... I sa the surgeon that removed my band last week and he has agreed to replace my band....so I am in the first phase to get approved.....my pcp is in agreement with me ( I thought that I would have a fight there) she referred me to a pulmanary dr. for a sleep test as I have been on sleep meds for over a year...nexium for more than a year....pain meds for foot over a year...steriod injections for foot twice...dr refuses to give more injections...with all this I'm still worried that the ins. co might not approve...btw my bmi is 41 I'm 4'11 1/2 ..215 lbs...:confused2:

  25. I will say this from my experience. My doctor did not do any of these tests before hand & I wish so badly that he had. I also have a narrowing in the esophagus they have discovered & I am now dealing with so many issues. I had vomiting in the hospital & had to stay an extra 3 days. I'm now dealing with horrific acid reflux that I've never had before. I'm also having to go for a scope to dilate my esophagus because of the severe swelling I am unable to hardly eat anything & am on the verge of dehydration daily. I honestly thought that this surgery was going to be the end all fix for all of my weight loss issues & it's actually been one of the most rough & exhausting things I've ever been through in my life. Please don't think I'm trying to be negative just consider carefully going forward with the surgery because there hasn't been a day when I wish I could go back in time & NEVER have done this. I just wished I had more information like this before I had done mine.
