    April 2022 VSG surgery..

    Thank you for this advice! It makes me feel a lot better. And I’m not sure if I ate that many extra calories. It seems a bit hard to believe considering my stomach still is not normal size yet. But it was my husbands birthday week so I did enjoy myself… nonetheless I’m back on track this week with going to they gym 4 days a week and watching what I eat. side note: I also have PCOS which is one of the main reasons I got the surgery. If you don’t know what that is long story short it’s a form of insulin resistance. Basically makes it hard to lose and easy to gain. So maybe that’s part of why I gained so quickly?? I’m not sure just guessing. It seems to be under control now that I’ve lost so much weight. But maybe that’s just what I think and it’s not under control after all. but despite all of this I’ll try to stay positive and do my best! An exciting thing is after April me and the husband will be trying for kids so that’s a something that keeps me motivated! Haven’t been successful in the past so I’m hoping this time around is different.
  2. I whole heartedly agree. Plus those pop a gummie & lose 20bs in a week without diet or exercise ads too. It was all my fault. The call of late night social media scrolling & believing supposedly honest online reviews from real people.
  3. We all lose at our own rate & no rate is right or wrong. But your loss so far is not a slow weight loss. It’s around what many of us lose that first month. Not sure what weight you started at, but unless you weighed in excess of 600lbs (like on the tv show) you are not going to lose large amounts of weight to begin (& even their rate of loss slows as they get smaller). And stalls are very common & almost everyone experiences them. Does your surgeon say you are losing slowly? Are they concerned? Maybe speak with your dietician to review your food choices & calories. But remember you are early out & your body is still healing. Your restricted diet is to support your healing & yes it can limit aspects of your lifestyle to begin. You will be eating more & a wider variety of food in a few weeks. I didn’t feel like I was missing out while I was losing. I went to a 60 birthday 2 weeks after surgery (took my own shake & sipped that), a 40th 6 weeks after surgery, reunions, social gatherings, dinners at restaurants, children’s birthdays, sporting events, travelled, etc. I just made careful food choices. I lost all my weight & more & have maintained +/- a kilo or two (am almost 4 years post surgery). I’ve never been able to do that. My lifestyle still isn’t compromised by how I chose to eat now. Exercise only contributes to about 10% of any weight you want to lose. Want to lose 50lbs, exercising will contribute to 5lbs of that. Of course there are many other benefits to exercising. Personally I didn’t exercise. Got on my treadmill a couple of times but was so tired I almost fell, off it so never got back on. Even now all I do is some stretches, a few resistance band exercises & some sit ups. I wouldn’t burn 30 calories.

    Surgery Shaming Should Be A Thing…

    I had surgery at 55 years old. That was 12 years ago. I only told a very small handful of people. My boss at work, who had wls 2 years before I did, and was my weight loss/surgery mentor; and three other trusted people.. I lived 53 years of my life being fat, being called names, and put down for my weight. I was NOT going to share this journey with just anyone. I "hugged" it to myself. It was my gift to me. To health, to longevity and not to impress anyone or anything else. I needed a tool, a way to be successful. And my gastric sleeve was it. I have almost lost half of me. From a size 30 to a size 14 petite. And 12 years later I have more energy now at 67 then I did in my 40's and 50s. When asked how I lost so much weight, I admit to "the sin of omission". My answer is that I eat less and move more. That I eat protein and vegetables and fruit and less carbs. All true. If a very obese person asks, and at some point, I feel like I can trust them, I will share. But it is not my idiot cousin's business nor is it my nosey neighbors. I like wearing normal size clothing. I love fitting in every chair. I don't just tell people about my medical procedures - why would I start with this one ? You do not owe anyone any explanations. It is like asking someone who has blue and pink hair .... "Did you dye your hair ?" "Did you lose weight ??" "yes, thank you for noticing. I love your sweater" they forget they asked, and tell you about their sweater.
  5. I am officially one week post-op. I love beef Jerky and of course know it's way to early to start eating it. But the thought crossed my mind to chew on it for the flavor and spit out the solids. Any comments from anyone who may have tried this and what your results were. Thanks in advance.

    Am I Full?

    I’m about 3.5 months out from mini gastric bypass and I’m really worried I’m stretching my little stomach. I get nauseous really easily (although it’s better) and sometimes I have foods that sit really heavy in my chest but I can’t tell if that means I’m full or not. I’ve noticed I need to slow down between bites and so I’m going to work on that. I’ve been steadily losing weight, averaging 1.5 pounds a week and I haven’t had a stall yet. Could I be missing cues of fullness? I’m just so worried I’ll undo the entire surgery.
  7. I had the same surgery as you, I lost slowly, stalled frequently and am still losing beyond my goal. Here's the thing though - don't compare youself to others, expect stalls and stay off the scale. You're losing fine. I know it can be frustrating, but you have to reign in the big expectations because your body will lose they way it needs to lose. For some of us, that means a slower rate, and that's ok. If you stick to your plan you'll be a success story of your own.

    Softs Go To Foods

    I am just out of soft foods. I made individual baked ricotta, tuna salad with the flavored tuna pouches, refried beans, pea soup, black beans, turkey taco meat (cooked with a small amount of water in the pan to make it softer), chicken stewed in tomato sauce (may be too acidic for some), deviled eggs, tilapia in foil pouches with lemon, protein oatmeal, chicken stewed in coconut milk and thai spice base, shepherds pie, and I am sure I am forgetting a lot. I was on soft food for 2 weeks and was supposed to eat five 2-3 ounce meals a day. I get bored easily so I did a lot of experimenting. Here is the baked ricotta recipe I used. I found some ramekins on Amazon that had 2 and 4 ounce measurement marks and used those with 2 ounces in each. Perfect size. https://bariatricbits.com/single-serve-baked-ricotta/

    Low Energy Levels after bypass?

    ( I had gastric bypass surgery on January 23,2023. Right after my surgery I was able to walk the halls of the hospital and get a thousand steps in at a time. When I got home reality hit and I felt exhausted! I know I had pain meds during my overnight stay- but- when I got home, I’d sleep all night, wake around 8 am, and then nap from noon to 3. This was my first week home. I barely was awake enough to drink my protein shakes, and sincerely considered trips to the bathroom or to fill my water bottle exercise. The second week I walked almost everyday- one trip around my pond- 1,080 steps. When I’d get inside, I collapsed into my recliner to warm up and rest. But- I still felt tired and not peppy, nor did I see massive weight loss. I am at the end of week 3- beginning of week 4- I’ve lost 20 pounds, am getting my protein requirement I, and 60 plus ounces of water a day, I take my vitamins- but, honestly, I still don’t feel energetic. Oh, I also had a 5 cm hiatal hernia fixed at the time of gastric bypass surgery. I am letting my body sleep when it needs too, respecting that I must exercise , feed and hydrate my body and am just…allowing this journey to unfold at its own pace. I want to be thin, healthy and active, but at this stage- I respect that my body must heal from the trauma of surgery- which is a big deal. I am just grateful to be on this side of surgery, grateful that I had the opportunity to go through it and looking forward to the wonderful life ahead, being healthier, enjoying my family and experiences without unhealthy co morbidities that haunted me before gastric bypass. These are just my thoughts!

    When can you drive after surgery?

    I am fairly sure my surgery center suggested not driving for 48 hours but my husband didn't want me to drive for a week because he was worried about me (luckily we both work from home so there wasn't very much need for me to drive). After four days unless you're having issues you should be ok for at least a short drive. Just be careful.

    Brain Fog after RYGB Surgery

    You may not be sleeping as well as you should right now, which can contribute. It took me weeks to get used to how I could lie at night without aggravating my incisions.
  13. Starting weight: 262lbs Height 5ft Hi all, I'm just over 1 month post-op (Mini bypass). I lost 14lbs on LRD (2 weeks), and since surgery I've lost 19lbs. I've pretty much had stalls throughout this month and I'm so disheartened that the scales aren't shifting much. Literally everyone else I know that's had surgery lost at a fast rate in their first month and meanwhile I'm chugging behind. I healed extremely fast, tolerate anything I'm cleared to eat and drinking as much fluid as I can. I'm also walking more with my dogs and soon to be cleared to go to the gym. I feel hunger still as well, and to be honest drinking water makes it worse for me. I didn't expect this to be a quick fix but if I have to work out 5 days a week to even go near my target, then surgery was a big waste of money as that just isn't suitable for my lifestyle. The reason I'm saying 19lbs is slow is because before surgery I could easily lose 2st in less than a month, obviously would gain it back but that was the norm for me. Has anyone got a similar story to mine where they started off slow but still hit their target? Thanks

    Just had surgery 2/14

    I felt like that when twisting for about a week, but that was the main discomfort I felt, aside from getting up from the couch the first few times. It does get better, stay hydrated that helps with bowel movements and you can try stool softener if needed. My incisions were glued, most were coming off by the 4th week because unintentional rubbing with clothes, others I started picking at them have some ocd tendencies lol, do not recommend, scarring its rougher in those.

    Screw peoples' judgement. If they had to go through what we do, they would never breathe a word of "easy" about the process. I felt at times like I was walking through hell barefoot when I was recovering; I literally almost died to get here. The only people I've experienced derision from are either a) completely uninformed about what the surgery entails and thinks I had all the fat sucked out or something (aka idiots...like yeah I just went back every week for a year and had a pound removed at a time? GTFOH with that!) or b) people who have never been fat and probably have never had a family member be fat either, and have no understanding of how someone ends up gaining weight. Good on them for being genetically blessed but that doesn't give them the right to judge anyone.

    Close to 4 months Postop VSG

    if you're sticking to your food plan and not losing weight for a few weeks (generally 1-3 weeks), then it's just a routine stall. If you're frequently going off your food plan, though, then you need to get back on track. I looked at it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lose a massive amount of weight, and I didn't want to blow it!! I know it's hard - but I was determined to do whatever it took to get rid of that weight once and for all!!

    to gain 4.6 lbs in a week, you would have had to have eaten 16,100 extra calories - that is, calories above and beyond what your body needs. So unless you've eaten that many extra calories this week, then the "gain" is likely due to water retention or very full intestines. In either case, it should be gone in a couple of days. and yes - you do have to monitor your food intake for life, unfortunately. I gradually put on 10 lbs over the course of a year because I wasn't monitoring myself as closely as I usually do. Working on taking that off now (have lost 7 lbs of it it so far - YAY!). This is a lifelong battle.

    Feb sleeves unite!

    For those getting ready for your surgery (YAY!) I just wanted to pop in with my experience (I am 2 weeks post op tomorrow). I see a lof of 'problems' and sometimes I think its easy for us to talk about negative or 'not great' things trying to help others, but then it makes it seem like everyone has those issues, when im not sure thats the case. For ME.... no nausea. not once. no vomiting. no tiredness. no dizziness. I did have more pain than i expected, but it lasted less than a week. Food wise.... I am eating around 700-800 calories a day. hitting protein goals on puree/ semi soft diet. Struggling to get in enough water, but doing my best. Not back at the gym yet but thinking probably next week, based on how i feel (obviously no weights yet lol). My tastes in foods have not changed at all. I have not had any bad reactions to any foods. All in all.... sometimes i wonder if i HAD surgery, aside from I can't eat much at a time. But, really.... I kind of think thats ideal LOL I haven't lost much weight yet but I remind myself that my body is still healing, With a (relatively) low BMI, I will lose slower anyway, and the slower you lose, the less loose skin you have. so.... #perspective All of yall are amazing and strong! ...............................
  22. oh sweetheart..... the surgery has NOT failed, I PROMISE! put ALL the scales away. old ones. new ones (which by the way, those things are not as accurate as they would like you to think). Lets look at this from a SIMPLE SCIENCE AND MATH viewpoint, okay? Lets say you are eating 700 calories a day. That is not MAINTENANCE for ANYONE. Not even my 5' self who has a below average metabolism. Add on to that, our bodies are retaining water and hoarding fluids, to HEAL our bodies. We had MAJOR SURGERY, even if it doesnt look or feel like it. That takes WEEKS AND WEEKS to heal. Theres a reason we are on exercise and lifting restrictions as long as we are. So we can HEAL. That healing takes a lot of water and a lot of our bodies energy. Add on to that, depending on your age, you may be holding on to water due to your cycle. Hormones, which go all kinds of out of whack with surgery, also can make us hold on to weight. Think about it this way... No one who went into concentration camps came out big. not even average. not even thin. Right? Our bodies WILL FIGHT to hold on to weight as long as they can. its life support at its most basic. but it can only do that so long. I know it is hard. I am in a very similar spot to you. I too, and looking at the scale not moving and sticking my tongue out at it. But heres the thing.... it WILL move. BE PATIENT. FOLLOW YOUR PLAN. Get in as much water and protein as you can. move move move. and know it WILL come off. We are BOTH doing everything right... and it WILL come off. ((((hugs))))
  23. I decided to buy myself new scales that included fat/bone/water mass etc, and found out that my water percentage is 35%, meaning I’m incredibly dehydrated. I don’t know if it is water weight I’m holding onto, as my water weight is so low already. I’ve always found it incredibly difficult to consume liquids, especially water as my stomach can only hold so much - even before the surgery. At the moment it takes me about 10-12 hours to drink a litre at most and I’ve tried things like fruit juices and teas etc…I just feel like I’m constantly forcing myself - on top of forcing myself to have protein shakes and soups and all the purées, I spend most of my time having to think about food and drink - planning my days around it - this was the opposite of what I wanted out of my surgery. Anyway, today I hit the 3 week mark and excluding the weight loss from the liver shrinking diet, I’ve lost a grand total of….. 1.1lb. Thank you all for your kind messages of support, but I think it’s safe to say that maybe this sleeve has failed me. I guess it won’t work for everyone, and I’m annoyed at how much money I’ve wasted on this procedure that could have gone towards a house deposit. Apologies for the negativity, I’m just incredibly frustrated and disappointed in myself.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Welcome. It would not have been possible to indulge. In fact, a week after Thanksgiving would have been much worse because you would have been starting the all liquid (ish) pre surgery preparation diet during a feast... that would have been hard! So, most of us are Nov 2021, but even if you're 2022, we're glad to have you. There are some regulars who still hang around and post their progress. Some folks are near their goals, others, like me, still have a ways to go. I come back for motivation and accountability but also to share with others who might also be struggling, to show that not everyone has it as easy as others. I also want my story to serve as motivation for those who may be thinking about surgery... to show that while this is hard work and nothing is easy at all, the process can work.
