    December Surgeries?

Hello my lovelies! I survived lol. Had my revision surgery from gastric lap band to sleeve this morning. Won't lie, was much worse then the banding lol, but that's to be expected considering they had to fix the mess Dr Felix Speigel made me 5yrs ago and then sleeve me. I woke in the recovery room screaming and pleading for pain medicine and anti Nausea meds, bedding to throw up and for water or ice to so so. Needless to saw never got water Didn't throw up and once then for me stable from screaming and crying at them I was put in my room around 1pm. Since them am feeling much better. Feel like I just did a marathon, 10000000000000 sit ups and twists lol and got a new BFF Hahahaha my pain med button. Still no ice or water but have a thing to swab a little water across my tongue and lips They should be taking me for a walk at 7pm

    April sleevers in mexico

Okay I'll be at Mi Hospital but I will be at the Marriott. Maybe we can get together. Don't stress they treat you like royalty. I had the band in Mexico in 2005 and am returning for a revision. You are in for a sweet surprise. Just relax! I am so confident I am bringing a close friend of mine to have the sleeve done. Just remember positive thoughts! And walk walk walk!!!
  3. In general, the bypass is favored for PCOS. You have quite a few comorbidities, and may want the more aggressive procedure. If you wanted to try the sleeve, it might work for you.... but be sure you are willing to consider a revision down the road if things don't turn out how you want them to. (A sleeve can be converted to a bypass or duodenal switch). The problem with revisions are they don't work as quickly or effectively as the virgin procedure, and the scar tissue gained from the first procedure makes the 2nd one a little harder to perform, and has a little more painful, lengthy recovery. Insurance companies also frequently have clauses that limit the number of procedures and revisions. Vitamins are required either way, but you'll take more of them with the bypass. One thing that will make you happy to hear.. the intestines get used to the new arrangement over the first couple years, so people with bypasses typically stop "dumping" after that time. They also absorb more nutrients as well. (This is how people start gaining after a couple years if they don't modify their diets permanently). Do plenty of research, and be comfortable with your choice. The sleeve is performed twice (?) as much as the bypass nowadays.. but it doesn't mean all those that get the sleeve have received the correct procedure for them. There are plenty of revisions being performed (mostly for newly-developed GERD). I'm 3 months out from the sleeve, and am very happy. I had high blood pressure (that has gotten better), but that was my only comorbidity.

    VSG to ESG Surgery??-Why??

Everything I've seen on here about getting a revision from sleeve because of GERD has been to the bypass. I've heard the bypass actually greatly diminishes or even eliminates GERD. And gives additional weight loss (although less than initial surgery, it still gives some). It might take another year, but you should be able to get that last 65 pounds down with the bypass, and have relief from the GERD. I would talk to your doctor again, and if he still won't budge from the ESG, find another doctor.

    TOGA to sleeve revision anyone?

I too had my procedure with UT Houston/Dr. Wilson and lost 60 pounds but put about 20 back on. I was wandering how your revision surgery to the Gastrics Sleeve went ? J

Me too!!! this will be a revision for me- VSG to RNY because of GERD and because I'm fat again...
  7. My first 50 lbs lost someone said "Pam did you drop a couple of pounds?) .grrrrrrr. well I probably did wear my pants a bit on the comfy side before but sheesh, 50lbs? Funny thing is 15 lbs more and then people were more like omg. Pammmmmmm you lost so much weight. I think your body hits a place where it changes. Then Id lose another 30 and no one would notice then 5 lbs more then it would be omg your gonna be skinny soon. Now after 100 lbs every 10-15 lbs is kinda noticable and my clothes changes. In fact I had a revision in early October and ive gained 35 lbs back and none of my clothes fit. sad!!!

    Severe Acid Reflux

The symptoms you had were the ones I had when I found out my band had slipped and caused a hiatal hernia. I had to have a very painful and long band revision and hiatal hernia repair as well as tons of scar tissue removed. My slippage was caused by a fill that was too tight that caused the band to slip. I had horrible reflux that woke me up at night. These were my only symptoms and I could still eat so I though nothing of it until it got to the point I was waking up choking on it. I went in and boom there is was on the xray. What followed was weeks of misery and pain. So don't take it lightly as I don't anymore.

    Severe Acid Reflux

As I said in my post, I'm under a doctors care. I've been checked for a slip and that's not the problem...believe it or not, many people suffer without a slip, erosion, etc while they are waiting for ins auth for removal. My situation is becoming the norm rather than the exception. I belong to a couple of online groups of people who overwhelmingly agree this is becoming the expected outcome of banding. However, I have lost 82+ lb and feel great other than my tummy issues. I'm hoping to revise to sleeve in early 2013, so I need to baby this thing in the mean time.
  10. I'm in the process of having my last clearance for revision surgery. Still undecided with revision surgery is the best to have. I hear the Duodenal Switch is the best. im looking forward to hear from everyone who has had revision surgery good and bad..
  11. Doe's anyone know who is reputable in Mexico to do revision surgery from RNY to DS. Ive read that Dr Ungson is no longer doing it as he took a government job. Any help would be appreciated Thanks in advance !
  12. She says in the title of the post that she was sleeved, I am not sure if this is a revision from a previous band or not?
  13. I have no shame in saying that I go to OE meetings. They have helped sooo much. Its helps me figure out why I turn to food. Is it emotional is it an actually physically hunger? Plus it put me in contact with people who know what I'm going through and when I'm really struggling with wanting to binge I have someone from group I can call. Just like anything food is a real addiction and can be found so much more easily that your common addictions. I had to learn how to basically re-eat. It sucks and yes occasionally I cheat or slip and have things I shouldn't but instead of a binge on that food, now I have one and then can easily go oh you naughty girl you know this is wrong and just move on. It is hard to change eating styles and learn how to eat properly, but with determination and will power you can really work your revision and lose this weight and have the long lasting effects you are seeking. Rooting for you!

Welcome! I too had my heart originally set on the Sleeve. However, my insurance and my doctor wouldn't approve it. My surgeon knew I had a history of heartburn and gerd - said that if you have that the sleeve may complicate it. In addition I was a revision to RNY from the band and it had higher complication rates.... I had my surgery back in August (revision) and original band surgery in April 2008. I honestly wish I would have had RNY originally I was scared of the malaborption as well as "re-routing'. However, I neded up with many complications from the band and ended up going through a tough revision surgery due to my fears. My original surgeon always pointed out that "band was reversable". Hindsight, why would I want to be fat again? and removing the band would do that. Iended up gaining back all of my weight plus some after band surgery. I'm down 47 pounds in two months (today is my anniversary - woot) and couldn't be happier! Good luck with your decision...let me know if you have any questions.
  15. Love these ideas! Especially the popsicle maker. Besides lots of protein drink mixes and vitamins, I bought a chicken...yep a chicken... to make my own broth to freeze. Got some small serving size containers for freezing my broth. Figure I'll eat the chicken pre-surgery and the broth post op. Real chicken broth tastes SO much better than the canned stuff. I'm a revision (plication to bypass) so I learned a few little survival tips from my first surgery a few years ago. I also bought baby (toddler) eating utensils to help me to keep bites small when I get to soft/ solid foods. Sounds silly, but it helps. Also got some slippers for the hospital, since I hear they will be making me walk the halls. Funny the topic of shopping is posted... can never be too prepared! And new stuff makes the journey that much more fun!
  16. May I ask what worked and what didn't work out so well? Any luck with finding a surgeon for revision? Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  17. I had my band placed on in April, 2006. The first year was a breeze and I lost a ton of weight. In month 13 of my journey, I was overfilled and slipped my band. Since then, I seemed to have developed an intolerance for my band. I have slipped it twice, constantly choke on my food, and have been miserable. On April 2nd, I will be revising from the lapband to the gastric sleeve. Dr. Aceves will be doing the revision in Mexico. I have decided to chronicle my experience here, so others that have band issues and decide to convert can have an idea of what to expect. I spoke with Nina, the patient coordinator yesterday and we now have everything scheduled. I am excited and nervous all at the same time. I will leave here on April 1st, have my surgery on the 2nd and return home on the 5th. My mother will be accompanying me on the trip. Nina advised me that Dr. Aceves is concerned about swelling due to the problems I have had with my band. Therefore, I am going this week for a complete unfill. Then, seven days before my surgery, I have to go on a complete liquid diet. This should alleviate any swelling issues and the chances of having to have the band removed and then go back at a later date for the sleeve. It is very important to me that I get this all done at the same time. I am looking forward to this, and feel like I have been given a new opportunity at life. To those who have helped me to be able to get the sleeve, thank you. Because of you, I now am looking forward to enjoying life again, instead of living in misery. I will update as I go through this journey.
  18. I don't think that I could consider a surgery that many doctors are not willing to do anymore.. Hi, Jo Ann. I just wanted to clear that up real quick. It's not that the Dr's are not willing to do the DS, they are just not trained to do it. It is a more complicated surgery, and required more learning, which most surgeons are quite happy with the status Quo if they are making money with the RNY. For some people (myself included) the DS has many, many advantages over the RNY. I'm not trying to sell you my surgery, I just wanted to say before you decide please do some research on the pros and cons of both, RNY and the DS. The DS still has the highest rate of EWL and the lowest rate of regain. I don't regret revising from the band to the DS, not for a minute. Good luck, and I'm very sorry about your band. I know how it feels, I've been there. Rachele
  19. Very good questions indeed. I don't know if I qualify to even respond to this, since I know many European Bandsters who have had theirs for some time (longer than me, I've had mine 5 yrs this upcoming month). There are also some Mexican Bandsters who are around with longer term band experiences, if not on this forum, then certainly on others. What's a "long" period of time? I don't know. Mine has stayed in (even though almost 5 ys ago, I had life-threatening illness after being banded) partially because no one knew much about the complications back in 2001. Rejection is always a possibility but so far apparently the Band and I have found some truce. I did have my port & tubing replaced 13 months ago but it was done surgically as usual (*shrug*) and I don't think there were signs of me rejecting the band, per se. However, my biggest concern is that after 5 years and 2 LapBand surgeries later, I've only gotten my BMI down to 30 or so. So technically I'm still listed as 'obese' according to BMI charts. That's hardly acceptable to me, and far more important, I still have more weight to use. So to answer your second question sometimes I wonder why " I " particularly went through this. Had I known a year ago that I still wasn't going to lose weight - then band rejection or not - instead of having my band port/tubing replaced - I would have been revised then (*sigh*) to another form of surgery. I wouldn't have gone through all I have done just to get down to this size. I'm VERY frustrated about that. Here's the irony - now that my BMI is down to 30 - I no longer qualify for a revision. So it's a tough position. So now I am undergoing series of tests to make sure the band is still OK. If the band has a defect or needs to be removed - then I would DEFINITELY need a revision to another surgery at the same time. Period. Or else I have to fight it out with the band. I can't lose any more weight with my band being under-restricted but at least it's there. - if I am unbanded and without a restriction, then I fear I will return to my former weight without a doubt. And so help me, I live in fear that I'd get even bigger. I'd be inconsolable. So it makes this a bit tough, but I'm not down yet. Happy Band (and UnBanded) Journeys to all, New Sho
  20. I hafta ask: We're u a revision surgery or did ur dr do the sleeve on u being a 29 bmi? I'm just curious. I get this question all the time cuz at the time of my revision, my bmi was 28. But since I had complications from my band (a slip), my insurance covered it and my dr did it. Or did u have major surgery and remove most of ur stomach to lose 40 lbs? Wow. I guess everyones entitled to lose whatever way they want, but really? Good luck to u!

    Sleeve to RnY Revision

I'm curious if you did the sleeve to RNY revision. If so, when? I had it done the day after Thanksgiving 2021. Reflux was gone immediately. I've lost 60 lbs. I lost it pretty quickly, I'm maintaining for over a month now. I was a little freaked out having problems with stopping the weight loss. I did the same thing with sleeve surgery in 2010. I can eat often, but very little at a time. I struggle with meat, an ounce is safe, maybe 1.25 oz, after that, it will end up 'sitting' between my ribs and 9 times out of 10 I'll have to throw up to get relief. Surgery was in Nov, then after a sonogram and endoscopy I had my gallbladder removed in March. (They also discovered a very large marginal ulcer. (What the heck is that?) I had to take a liquid medication 3xs a day and they did another endoscopy 6 weeks later. Ulcer went from very large to large. Six weeks later another endoscopy showed it was healed. Now I'm just focusing on trying to not lose more weight. Gaining 10 lbs would be fine. I'd like to stop there and maintain just under 150. How realistic is this, maintaining from now on. Sadly, sweets and some fried meats (catfish, chicken fried steak) are easy to keep down, mashed potatoes too. I have to weigh meat, and sometimes then it still gets to me. What's up with that? Any advice, insight etc would be greatly appreciated. Share you story with me if you've had the sleeve to bypass revision.
  22. How was you’re recovery process going from the sleeve to bypass? In a few weeks I will be doing a revision of my sleeve to bypass due to a hiatal hernia and acid reflux. I’m curious to know if the recovery after the surgery is worse, the same or easier the second time around. I’m also interested in knowing how your insurance covered the revision. My policy has an exclusion and I’m concerned I will be denied coverage.
  23. My insurance will not cover revisions. I don't consider this a revision, I have been 7 months since my band was removed. I have had my PCP refer me..now we shall see. Hopeful at best
  24. Great post! Couldn't agree with you more. After going through the lap-band roller coaster, I was so happy to find that I am able to eat whatever I want after having the sleeve for a few months. The awesome thing is, I crave healthier food in general. When I feel weird, I eat some chicken and I feel better. I carry string cheese and Peanut Butter filled pretzels in my purse and that will get me through several HOURS of the day. I can say that I never feel hungry, but I start to feel weird if I don't eat for a few hours. Most of all, I can't compare my weight loss to a lot of people on the board because I was a lap-band revision and I don' t have as much to lose. However, I think the percentages are extremely similar for everyone. I am 4 months out and I have lost 66% of the excess weight. I am on target to lose it all in 6 to 8 months. But, if someone hears I have only lost 40 pounds in 4 months, they might think I was a slow loser. Bottom line: you are right, it all comes out in the end. I don't count carbs, but I have more of a yearning for healhty food. I eat a lot of cheese, I have developed a weird craving for Starbucks iced mocha lattes (which I can only handle about 1/3 of then I throw it away), I have rekindled a torrid love affair with chicken, and I eat one serving of oatmeal every day (for fiber) which I have never done before in my life. I focus on Protein first because it makes me feel better - that's it. If chocolate made me feel better, I would probably eat that first :-) Nice to hear from you and really happy you are cruising right along!
