  1. Ok this is so strange....I had been at a plateau for a while and was talking to a dear girlfriend of mine who had the band the same time i did (we started at nearly the same weight 4 lbs difference and we are the same height) anyway I was telling her I am eating about 1000-1200 cal a day but I am burning about that many calories a day doing exercise. She told me she eats a lot more than I do and she's losing weight quicker than me and she's not exercising much. So I tried eating more and I lost 4 lbs WEIRD Huh...could it be that they tell us to restrict our calories too low now our bodies think we are starving ourselves? But when we actually give our bodies food it likes us again? Has this happened to anyone else?
  2. Howdy! Well, Im getting ready to attend my initial consulation meeting with a local doctor. I never considered lap band but after attending a meeting to support my bestfriend and reading which weight loss tools others have tried...myself included...before choosing lap band I decided it could be for me. I know I'm in the very beginning of my journey but I'd like some advice to help guide my direction. First, I'd like to know if anyone has ideas on what sort of questions I should ask the doctor... Lastly, as I've read some of the threads on pre/post op and it sounds kinda scary but what scares me most is high blood pressure, type II diabetes, heart disease...and anything else that could alter my quality of life...so another question, if I may...what are some things to do post op to minimize any uncomfortableness you might have experienced.... I know we're all different but a little knowledge, positive attitude, and a deep breath might help me through it.... Thanks and I'm so excited to be a part of a community where we all understand eachother! Thanks, Aggiegal
  3. heeey lap band fam im new to all this so ill make it short and sweet like my self lol. im not banded yet but my date in set for jan 19th 2011 im having it done in TJ by dr. Rodriguez. Im so nervous about the whole thing iv talked to a ref list from beliteweight of people who have been banded and some of them told me they lost very little weight. To be honest thats a huge worry for me seeing as though im a broke college kid who scrimpt and saved for this sugery. Another concern is the fact they they are going to use some type of surgical glue to close the incetions, but the main thing i really need your guys help with is the pre and post op diet.
  4. My SGV was Feb. 15, 2011 and I lost 25 pounds the first month and then have stopped I continue to loose inches but discouraged about my weight loss ... has this happened to others?
  5. Ok so I had my first fill done today and it wasn't so bad. The doc numbed the area around the port and stuck the needle into the port. I am a bit scared to eat though because I do not want to throw up. He told me I could do mushies today and go back on solids tomorrow. The only bad thing about the visit....I gained 7 lbs since surgery. :frown:

    Hello

Welcome Claire! I completely understand wanting to just survive the recovery phase. Especially those first couple of weeks! I too could give a wink about weight or meds immediately post-op, I just wanted to concentrate on getting some kind of nutrition in my body so I didn't feel so weak. I'm sorry that you're suffering from a cold. I can only imagine how much more frustrating and taxing it is on your recovery process. However, like all things in life, the cold will pass, your recovery will come and you will be well on your way to success. This site is a great place to come and ask questions, read others experiences and just have conversations in general about the sleeve. I hope your recovery is quick and that quickly and positively adjust to this new life style. Good luck to you!

good news but not so good news

Look for a specialty service, My hospital has a Surgical Weight loss center and they are wonderful. Your best bet is to check with all the hospitals in your area to see what they offer, and go to a seminar or two and talk to people in the support groups at each one. Good lick in you search. It's hard to have a bad doctor with bad workers.

Weight....163.6 Had a cup of hot tea with skim milk this am. Did P90X workout with Jamie for 40 minutes. Lunch is a salad (lettuce, cheese, egg, bacon bits, mushrooms and banana peppers) approximately 2 cups with ranch dressing. Also 2 medium slices french bread with butter.

    Filled today!!!

So I had my first fill today. 2.5cc. He had some trouble finding my port. He said it was tipped, and he had to angle the syringe twords my feet abit to get the right angle. He told me I should remeber this in case someone who isn't him need to adjust my band. He said this is not a bad thing, and does not mean there is a problem, it's just how I healed. I am officially down 20 pounds since my surgery weight and I have dropped 1 pants size. He was pleased with that. I would like it to be more, but I know I didn't get this way overnight, and I can't fix it overnight. So I guess I keep plugging along until my next fill in 6weeks.
  10. I had my first fill at the end of March. I went back to my surgeon 3 1/2 weeks later for a f/u visit with every intention of getting another fill. I had 1.1 cc's put in at first. I haven't felt much restriction, just sometimes and I PB'd once. I told the doctor that I PB'd once and that I felt the "golf ball" about 2x per week. He told me to hold off for another month because he didn't want me to be too filled to get anything down. He has been happy with my weight loss. So.... I took his advice and will wait until next month. I have just heard nightmare stories about bandsters being overfilled. Just watch what you eat and try to stick to low carbs and high protein. Good luck!!
  11. I had my seminar tonight and I love the surgeon and his entire practice! He thoroughly explained everything and was very real and truthful. He went over all 3 procedures but basically said he will probably not be doing anymore lap band surgeries come next year. He actually sees that entire procedure fading out soon. I asked about a pre op diet and he said he really doesn't require one or require his patients to lose a certain amount of weight prior to surgery. Unless however they are super obese and surgery soul be too risky at their current weight. I turned in my paperwork and they said I should receive a call in a week or so after they contact my insurance. I am looking forward to starting this next chapter in my life!

So I need a refresher guys!

Yep, carbs are now the sworn enemy of the banded--Protein intake is 60-80 grams daily. Don't forget your Flintstones chewable Vitamin and chewable Calcium (or Tums EX). 1/2 to 3/4 cup of food for each meal should fill you up (once you get some fills in), and Water, water, water! (I've just read where you should drink 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water a day--egads!) Stock up your cans of tuna and chicken, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, eggs, and refried Beans, m'dear! A hearty welcome back!!

are you happy you did it?

Heidsz, The answer is absolutely! I was banded last July 9th. Since then I have lost 72lb and only 38lbs to goal. For me is has been as simple as follow the rules, do what the docs ask of you, and it works. It is not a magical cure. You can eat "around" the band, ie ice cream, chips, candy bars, are all still easy to eat. If you will eat normal foods and and not graze you WILL lose weight. You will need to eventually increase your physical activity. If will do this you will be sucessful. Take control of your own future weight loss and good luck!
  15. Reporting in that I had a great day today. Stuck with my meal plan and had a really good workout at the gym. Thanks again to everyone who provided words of encouragement. It was just what I needed! I'm still getting used to talking about weight loss and being honest when I have a bad day. I usually just suffer in silence because I'm so mad at myself and embarassed. Just about all of my friends and family members are thin and it's impossible to talk to someone who thinks having 10 pounds to lose is a big deal. I have to say I'm actually looking forward to my psych consult. Pretty sure it is going to be more helpful than I think.
  16. Let's see. 3rd week: cold -1 week and took a lot of NyQuil 5th week: cold - same 2 month: flu - 2 weeks, high fever and generally miserable 3 month: staph infection (weird on my head) - lasted for 3 weeks and painful. Went away with antibiotics. 6 month: flu - 3 week. Worst flu I have ever had and kept me in bed for first 3 days. Last month. Got so dehydrated because I had trouble drinking Water and the flu robbed a lot of water. Definitely have been getting sick more after surgery. I used to only get sick once a year if that. There were some stretches where it would be 3-4 years of no colds or flus when over weight. I think part of the problem is that I visited the clinic quite a number of times post op for various reasons. Even though I am careful about using purell there, opening door handles, etc, it is hard to avoid the many other sick people in the clinic. It is strange. I am generally very healthy. Take my Vitamins and supplements every day. Eat the high Protein and high amounts of water. I have lost a lot of weight in 7 months, most of it during first 6 months. Oh well, small price to pay for being healthy in terms of physical fitness and diet.
  17. I started my pre-op liquid diet on Memorial Day and did well until today. I fought every urge to cheat and eat real food but some how I made it through the moment. That was until a few hours ago. I had a momement of weakness and went to Wendy's and got a kids meal and ate the whole thing. I am even more disappointed in myself because I knew that I was already at an increased risk for surgery problems because my liver is 3 times the normal size of someone my age and weight. I feel so helpless and I'm worried I am going to have trouble staying on the diet now because I couldn't make it 10 simple days on liquids only. Anyone go through a similiar momemt of weakness? I am prepared for harsh responses, heck I probably really need to hear them so that I don't fail like this again.

    Really don't know.

Ok wow. So my weight loss and everything has been Ok, could be worse. But my mood, my...i don't even think it's that. When you need a friend and you don't have any...where do you go? Seriously. Besides that, I'm just so empty. It doesn't matter if I'm depressed or ok anymore...I'm just empty no matter what I do. I love my b/f, my family, my friends. I love school, I look foward to being somewhat ok at my future job...but the emptiness never goes away... I really don't want to be on meds again...I feel ok sometimes...ish....even then...I'm so empty and up in limbo that my diagnosis is just "Not otherwise specified".... And I've been pretty much diagnosed (went to 4 doctors that all said i had this) with Trigeminal Neuralgia...and i just discovered that mine might be caused by stress/emotions...great. Seriously after being completely pain free for almost a week, i start crying and the pain kicks in again. I feel crazy.

    "Shake Weights"

it's a complete gimick you may "feel" something, but there are exercises that are completely more beneficial than the shake weight. you can take a few medium-large size can of Beans and use them as weights vs. the shake weight or even free weights. in essence you're performing an isometric contraction. anyone can do that and become totally exhausted doing it, but isometrics are not as beneficial as a dynamic exercise with complete range of motion you're better off investing in some free weights

    "Shake Weights"

I always wait to see what ends up in the gym, lol. So far, its only those ab rollers that I've ever seen - oh and gym balls. I havent really looked into these, but I've picked one up at the store. It moves around inside right? The premise will be the moving weight challenges stabiliser muscles - there's some truth to this and I'm a real believer in functional fitness. But a little girlie weight isnt going to have much effect. If you're interested in this type of training though, google sandbag training. Lifting a heavy bag of sand whilst you squat and lunge and such, it moves around, its hard to grip, that really challenges your core and stabilisers. But I personally wouldnt waste my money on little light dumbells. For lighter weights, fill some milk or juice bottles not completely full with Water - use ones with a handle. Those will work a bit like kettlebells, but the water will slosh, the weight will shift and it will achieve the same thing. And of course, if that's not the element that interests you, save your cash and just buy some ordinary dumbells.

    Excited??

Well I think better now than later... if u wait too long you may decide not to get it done. This will be a life style change for you so if u have to eat less and or make better food choices big deal.... It's going to be the summer anyway... and the more weight you can loose between now and july will be more than just a few i'm sure... I would do it now.... but thats my opinion.

    Just saying Hello

welcome to LBT, congrats on your weight loss!
  23. Went for my cardio eval a month ago and the cardiologist found something questionable on the EKG. Followed up with an echocardiogram, which eliminated questions in EKG and had good results. Then, he recommended a nuclear stress test, due to my family history and weight. That was a 2-day process and I was a little nervous about them finding something. My brother, who is in great physical condition, had a blockage at my age (surprised everyone given his slender physique and good eating habits) and needed a stent. Luckily, I received my results today and they are normal. Also, he said he's clearing me for surgery. Now, only one Nut visit left before submitting to insurance. Getting frighteningly close to actually going through with this. Hopefully I won't chicken out ...
  24. My first appointment with my surgeon is on July 14th, so I have a good 5 weeks. I would like to use this time wisely. I don't feel the need to go on weeks of food funerals, though I am sure I will have 3 or 4 favorite meals during this time. But how else can I best use the time til mid-July? Here's what I am in the process of doing now: I have read several books and am well versed on the different surgery types, am uncertain btw. sleeve and RNY, will rely on physician input once he sees the whole health picture. I am seeing my primary care doc on this month to officially record starting weight, and let them know I am getting WLS. I will attend support group meetings. Am getting my psych eval done this week. Trying out different protein products. So I guess the big question is, do I start serious, low carb, dieting now, in the meantime? I am the type who can lose 20 pounds fairly easily, but then....I stall, and I stall HARD, and then I usually get sloppy and start slowly regaining. So I am a little worried about losing my 20 easy pounds, showing up to the surgeon mid-July and he says, hey lose 10% of your body weight before surgery please, and then I am stuck "starting over" right in the really hard part of every diet I have ever been on. Maybe I am whining here? I would like to do everything I can to get a head start before that first surgeon appt, since I'd like to do the surgery as soon as I can bc of work cycles (I work in college administration). I supposedly have no mandatory diet and exercise waiting period (we'll see on that....). I figure that starting to lose weight now will just mean it's some weight at least that I don't have to lose later, so maybe I should just jump in and diet? Try bariatric recipes? What do you recommend? Thanks for any input or advice.
  25. yes, I agree with everything that has been said: By time I decided to take my first steps toward surgery, I had already stopped drinking caffeine, but had to stop drinking sodas I walked 30 min a day at first and eventually added an hour of Water aerobics I put myself on a 1200 calorie diet - emphasized eating over 60 grams of Protein a day, drinking 60 ounces of Fluid and cutting out all the empty calories I could. Of course, there were days that weren't perfect, but doing all this really helped to get me ready for my surgery and I lost 9 lbs before seeing the doctor the first time and another 30 before surgery. Knowing that I would have surgery and finally be able to have a tool to help me lose my excess weight was a great motivator. Good luck with the process and take one day at a time.
