  1. Basically, in order to shrink your liver, this is what you have to do: high Protein, very low carb, low to no fat, and because you are straining your system, you have to drink a lot of Water. You will find that everyone's diet varies. Mine allowed us 3-4 Protein shakes, and 3-4 cups of non-starchy vegetable Soups. Most people are also allowed sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free puddings, clear broths, and sometimes, fat-free greek yogurt. We were told to stay between 900-1000 calories, almost no carbs, no fat, really you're doing 80% protein and water. I'd suggest you run these and other suggestions you get here by your doctor and ask him if those are okay by him.

    Fighting the sirens song...

I hate to cook too and still struggle to get as much water in as they want. I do get the minimum 48oz/day but don't always make the 64oz they want. I was so glad to stop eating cottage cheese and yogurt! I scoured the grocery isles for food that looked good and was easy to make (Or better, didn't require making). I have to admit I got a little bit of attitude about my diet when I was ALMOST, but not quite, meeting their calorie and water goals, telling them that I was struggling, and they scolded me and raised my goals. I have a spreadsheet that calculates calories and protein from every food I get with a nutrition label and buy low fat, low sugar foods so the calorie and protein count meets my goal. I got a frown from my nutritionist when I told her I eat ham every day, but I gave her a "look" and told her my calorie and protein goals were being met and she refrained from scolding me. I buy Kentucky Legend Bonless Quarter Sliced Ham because it doesn't have lunchmeat texture and I can just weigh out my portion and eat it cold. I got another frown when I told them I eat beef jerky, but reminded them that 100g of protein is hard to do, jerkey is low calorie and high protein, and I chew it VERY well and spit out gristle. If they have to cut a ball of gristle out of my stomach, then I'll stop eating beef. I switched nuts for peanut butter toast when I started getting hungrier. I eat a lowfat sharp cheddar with crackers. Quaker makes a protein Banana Nut Instant Oatmeal. I also eat 1/2 Atkins Chicken Margherita or Healthy Choice Simply Steamers Grilled Chicken & Broccoli Alfredo (1/2 is less than my 6 oz, but it's easier to just take half and eat the other half the next day and the math is easier too). Those 2 were the best my WalMart carries for frozen food Calorie/Protein ratio that I also liked. For an added vegetable I eat 2oz canned french style green beans with 1/2 oz Velveta low fat cheese heated in the microwave. Tyson makes a fajita chicken that microwaves well if you put a dollop of water on the plate. Turkey bacon doesn't really satisfy my bacon cravings, but turkey sausage is really good. If I'm craving sweets I'll eat a Quaker Caramel Rice Cake or a few dark chocolate chips. Luckily I crave salt, not sweets, and the salt cravings have almost gone away. If I'm going to be away from home for a few hours I pack an insulated lunch bag with a serving of ham, cheese and crackers, and jerkey to take with me. If I'm going to be gone for a day or longer I pack my food in bags and a cooler. I got married a little more than 3 months after my surgery and ate what I wanted at my wedding and during the honeymoon, I just kept the servings really small and took protein with me to make sure I still got enough protein and because I needed to eat more than 3 times a day. After that, I allowed myself one meal out each week, eating my 6oz and taking the rest home. Hubby ate most of the leftovers. After I reworked my diet to include tastier, real food, I switched my protein powder to a Collagen with the added missing amino acid. It mixes best with warm or hot liquids and was approved by my nutritionist. I still use 2 scoops a day, 1 with my protein oatmeal and 1 with my sugar free hot apple cider. I met my goal weight at 7 months, just in time for a Halloween party, and I allow myself a small cheat almost every day (my nutritionist told me to add 100-200 cal per day to stop losing weight and i decided to add a tasty snack rather than rework my diet). I watch my weight to make sure I'm not overdoing it. If I eat out, that's my cheat and it replaces a meal. I order what I want and ask for a container BEFORE the food is served so I can pack away all but 6oz before I start to eat. Some cheats aren't really cheats. I've added in apples, pineapple, strawberries and mango. Breyers Carb Smart Fudge Bars have 50 calories, 3g fat, 2g sugar (0 added), and 1g protein. It's only a cheat because of the low protein/cal ratio. Pure Protein bars could be a meal substitute instead of a cheat and have 180-200 cal, 3-4.5g fat, 2-3g sugar, and 19g protein. I like the Chocolate Salted Caramel that's a little chewy and the Chocolate Mint cookie, which has more of a grainy (cookie) texture but tastes really good. At a party, I may eat a bag of chips (~150cal), or I may give in and eat a single Reese's cup (105 cal). OK, maybe a bag of chips AND a single Reese's cup, I'm weak. Dot's Seasoned Pretzels have 130cal per oz. An entire bag of buttered flavored popcorn has 150cal (DO NOT LICK THE BAG). It's nice to eat something tasty and not worry about if it has enough protein. I just had my 9 month bloodwork done, it's all fine.

    is it normal~

I went to see him yesterday and he was concerned because I have been afraid to eat and drink...He said you have to get your protein in to heal...so today, I drank an 11 0z protein drink then a 12 oz diet iced tea, followed by the 5 oz yogurt..i did do it all slowly, waiting for a sense of fullness which never came...i dont know what is normal and what is not and havent had much help from the doc except a sheet of paper with a list of approved foods at different stages....
  4. to drink and drink and eat 5 0z of yogurt and not feel any kind of fullness at all at 9 day post op...Im nervous cuz I havent felt any kind of fullness since surgery...

Yeah i definitely didn't tolerate tuna. Try yogurt, cottage cheese and applesauce with a bit of Splenda, retried beans and some cheese- those are all ones I have tolerated.

    Two days pre-op

Having surgery on Tuesday too!! Been on full liquids for 11 days. No veggies or meat allowed. Shakes and broth with a bit of non fat Greek yogurt.
  9. At four weeks I was living off imitation crab, shrimp cocktail, deli lunch meats, canned peaches, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese bakes, Greek yogurt, egg salad, tuna salad and string cheese. Oh and mashed potatoes with dry non fat milk mixed in with Greek yogurt and shredded cheese
  10. I ate eggs, string cheese, cottage cheese with canned fruit, ground chicken and turkey, greek yogurt and most veggies were ok if you cooked them until they were really soft......also mushed up beans. Also did protein smoothies with all kind of fresh fruit. Good Luck!

    Ramen Noodles

An option for a low cost, high protein low fat meal during your rough patch can be canned tuna, chicken or salmon. I put the tuna and chicken with a teaspoon of mayo and 2 teaspoons of greek yogurt with some onions, celery etc. It is really satisfying as a meal, very high protein, and only about 150 calories.

    3 month post op pic

Breakfast: my usuals are any of the following: Greek Yogurt, eggs/omelette, Cream of Wheat with cheese, cottage cheese with fruit (~3 oz) Lunch: Protein shake or Quest bar Dinner: roll-ups (turkey), chicken, shrimp, fish, or beef (I'm trying for 3 oz now) with a bite of veggies (usually broccoli, green Beans, or cauliflower) Snacks: usual Snacks are Babybel cheese, yogurt, peaches, pears (snacks are usually ~ 2oz) my doc would like 1 snack a day, but I typically do 2 to maintain a good blood sugar. I also still add unflavored Protein powder to my softer foods (yogurt, cottage cheese, etc) * In my gallery I have a few food photos you can check out!
  13. Try scrambling with some heavy cream if you are looking for scrambled. I am allergic, so no eggs for me. Also, having surgery on the 15th, my Dr said nothing like eggs until after my next appt (on the 31st). I'm on "thin enough to pass through a regular straw". The thickest I've tried is yogurt thinned with soy milk, which went down well.
  14. Thank you Ginger Snaps and Tgarden. I am doing much better today. Off the pain meds mostly...I am taking a dose at night as I seem to be pretty sore by end of day and feel this will help me sleep. I may not need tonight but will judge by how I feel. My older daughter went to the store for me and got the Kroger Carb control yogurt as it has the lowest sugar but it only has 9 grms of Protein...I either need to add the unjury no flavor protein to this or choose a different yogurt. Like your idea Ginger Snap of adding the Jello powder to the plain yogurt- this way I get the protein I want. Thanks!
  15. Hi! I had a RNY on 7/15 (with a hysterectomy). I'm home and on liquids. I see so many more options than I was given!! I don't have yogurt in my list. I'll have to call my NUT tomorrow and see what she says. Anyway, we ended up renting a wheelchair because I have five kids (three bio two foster) and couldn't be stuck at home anymore. We went to a local fair and I walked some and ride some and it was lovely to get out! Anyone restricted on cold items? I'm told no ice in drinks. Is it truly because it will cause pain?

    Any April sleevers

Hello all... New here and sleeved on April 8th. Many of you are before me so it's inspiring and informative to read how you are doing, what your going through and how you've made out. Today i'm 10 day's out and noticed I can take a few bigger sips of liquid. Hopefully I can get a some more liquid in during the day. I find it very difficult to keep a cup in my hand and sip every few minutes. The post surgery pain has subsided substantially after day 6. The first 4 days were terrible for me. I still had to use pain meds and spent 1 extra day in the hospital. I think the walking has helped eliminate it. I did attempt to cheat and have a bit of pizza yesterday. Why did i do that??? (StupidMcNupid) It hurt like crazy and I had to call the Doc. Won't go into what he told me... The pain was so bad I had to pray. Had a "#2 blowout" and felt a little better. 4 hours later i started to normalize and feel better. PLEASE, PLEASE don't follow my lead on that one. I was weak and paid the price so that you guys don't have to. Other than that, my energy levels are quite good. I'm sleeping earlier than normal and waking up a bit early as well. Thats good to get an early morning walk in. I'm unsure who's tracking calorie intake but each day (2 shakes / 2 soups / 3 tsp of yogurt) i'm averaging a little less than 500 calories a day. Scary for me. Doc say's don't worry but wondered how and how you guys that are close in dates to me are doing. D

Side Effects With The Pre-Op Diet...

Morning of Day 3. I feel much better. Day one I thought I would die. I'm allowed 3-4 high protein, low carb shakes, and a 4-5 from a list of things I'll say below. Yesterday I went shoppoing and got so many choices. I bought all diff. protein shakes at Vitamin Shoppe (including Oh Yeah my favorite), non-chunky yogurt (like Dannon light and fit lemon), those Imagine pureed soups, every sugar free popsicle they make, sugar free pudding and jelllo (that I may once in a while put a dallop of sf cool whip) and I also can have cream of wheat or rice. Honestly, the cream of wheat with cinnamon saved my life last night because it's the only things that feels like it has texture.

    August sleevers?

New discoveries this week since I have been doing the 2 week liquid diet. 1) I don't like GNC's vanilla whey Protein - too much of a weird whey/protein taste/after taste/smell 2) unjury chocolate Power is better but still not my favorite 3) The Nutribullet does wonders to mix the protein better (with ice) better than a shaker bottle 4) The Unjury chicken Soup is barely passable by itself (I never like Chick broth anyway) but I am looking forward to mixing with instant potatoes and fat free refried Beans 5) Cytosport Monster Milk (Chocolate) IS MY MOST FAVORITE WAY TO GET IN PROTEIN (warning: it's wicked expense, most because I buy it premixed in the bottles, which I think also helps dull any protein taste.) 6) I have a new respect for Jello and greek yogurt.

    Protein help

I am pre-op so by no means know what I am saying, but other forums have talked about isopure and other protein waters. My Nut suggests cutting the sweetness with plain yogurt. Good luck and keep us posted on what works.

What Do You Mix Unjury Into?

If you are talking about unjury Unflavored? I mixed it in chicken broth soup, tomato soup, really any kind of Soups. Yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, milk, smoothies. I even heard someone say in their tea and coffee....
  23. At two weeks, my surgeon's plan said I could start the mushies. You'll want to check with your Dr first, but I've been living on the following: Cream of Wheat Egg (1, with a little salsa) String cheese Cottage Cheese Soups from a local Soup shop (puree'd) Lite Yogurt etc. It hasn't been that bad. Again, check with your Dr, but those are the things that are working for me.
  24. Even though all doctors subscribe to a different set of pre-op rules, i've noticed a WIDE variety of liquid diets on here. Mine will consist of the usual broths and also includes yogurt, applesauce, grits, popsicles, pudding and even mashed potatoes! No real mention of protein shakes, but I can add stuff to my milk intake to make it taste better, ie, Carnation instant breakfast mixes. The supposed goal of the pre-op is to shrink the liver, to make access to the stomach easier and less risky. Post op goals are to not irritate the new stomach and to promote healing. I think it sounds like you are doing fine if you are losing and by keeping things as liquid-like as possible, I'd say you are on the right track. Good Luck.
  25. Please tell me what you are snacking on... I dont want to eat cheese or yogurt, Need something new
