  1. I have a history of sleep apnea and have used CPAP in the past. Last year I got to the point where I wasn't able to use it because of nose obstruction and had nose surgery - deviation repaired, polyp removed, turbinates worked on, sinuses cleaned out - and have had a pretty good airway since then. Of course I haven't been able to use my CPAP because the pressure would have been too great. Had anticipated UPPP then finally decided to quit Band-Aiding my health problems and treat the real issue - my weight - with LapBand. I had to have a sleep study 2 weeks ago to see where my apnea was at. They didn't put CPAP on me that night as I didn't have enough episodes to warrant it. The tech told me the physician who read the study may ask me to come back for a study with CPAP - he just wasn't sure. Went for my results with my PCP yesterday - and no repeat sleep study requested!! WOO-HOO!! I anticipated having to have another study - a month of compliance, etc. Now it appears I may have just cleared the last hurdle! My doctor's office has submitted my paperwork for approval. I went to my seminar Nov. 1 so it has been a crazy 3 months getting all my appointments in, but I think I may be on the brink of being able to schedule surgery! I'm hoping for mid March. Know I could probably get in sooner, but I want to take a full week off and March works best for that. Sorry for the long post... just so excited!
  2. My doctor's office called and said they have the verbal approval yesterday, and we scheduled my tenative surgery date for 6/9. They won't firm it up until they get the letter. So i called the Insurance to find out when they would be sending the letter out, and if I could get it faxed to me. They girl i talked to showed it was still pending. So i called the dr's office and left a message that i was confused. I get a message back today that they are now saying I need to notify them 6 months before Surgery to get approved, not that I have to have a medically supervised weight loss, just that I need to notify them 6 months in advance!!!!! Now, I called and checked my benefits, and the Dr also called and verified benefits, and was never told any of this, and I went on my plan website and logged in as me, and you can see below that it states nothing about a 6 month noitfication!!!! I am so Frustrated, it has been 6 months of gettting all my appointments in and getting everything ready. The coordinator at my Dr office is not giving up on pushing this through, and neither am I we are both going to call the insurance tomorrow again.....I am just to irritated, I just needed to vent!!! Notification Requirements Special Note Regarding Medicare If you are enrolled in Medicare and Medicare pays benefits before the Plan, you are not required to notify us before receiving Covered Health Services. Prior notification is required before you receive certain Covered Health Services. You are responsible for notifying us before you receive the following Covered Health Services: · Ambulance – non-emergent air and ground · Clinical Trials · Dental Services -Accident Only ● Emergency Health Services if you are admitted to a non-Network Hospital. · Obesity Surgery · Reconstructive Procedures · As soon as the possibility of a transplant arises (and before the time a pre-transplantation evaluation is performed at a transplant center).

    Pre-op weight loss

Because of my pre-op BMI (38) I was not required to lose any weight before surgery. But if I had gained, I would have been canceled until I lost it. My surgeon does require some to lose weight, but it is patient specific, not a flat 5% for everyone. I did have to do a 2-week pre-op fasting program, I did Medifast. I lost 8 pounds during this 2-week phase. Denise
  5. I'm new at this, so please be patient if I seem not-so-smart about posting, etc. I went to my first weight loss seminar in March of this year, and have been pondering it ever since. My niece and her fiance' have had the sleeve done, and are doing great, so I've been watching their journey as well. Since I've tried every weight loss gimmick and plan and have always gained the weight back, I finally decided that I needed something that would finally work. That is why I chose the sleeve. I made an appt. with the surgeon, went for all my introductory appts. at his office and finally met with him last month. My surgery is scheduled for the 14th, and I just started the pre op diet of protein drinks only on Wed. So far, so good. I wish myself and all of you pre op members the best!

    Pre-Op Weight Lose

Congrats on doing your pre-op weight loss goal! After entering the bariatric program where I was it took me 7 months to get into the mind set of 'wanting' to really drop the initial weight. Wishing you a speedy recovery from surgery, and of course, much success!
  7. Haven't been on here in a while ! Got tired of seeing people losing lots of weight and I wasn't. HW 260 SW 244 CW 221 Surgery was Aug 4th . BMI 40 now 38. before surgery
  8. My doc is conservative too. I had restiction from the surgery and was supposed to have a fill at 4 weeks. I postponed to 5 weeks and he did 1.5cc. the next one was 1cc and the third was 0.5 cc. So I have 3 cc ni my band and am still losing slowly. As long as I get all my Protein, and make it very lean, then eat low carb veggies and occasionally fruit, I am not too hungry. I do not care how I lose it, as long as it comes off. I have lost in the past, especially on low carb, high protein. I think the beauty of the band is I will not gain it back. I am trying to focus on learning how to use my band, learning new eating habits and changing my lifestyle to keep it off. I figure if it takes a little longer to lose it, it is just more time to practice!!!!!!! Also supposed to be better for avoiding the loose skin if you lose slower!
  9. Hi my name is Carrie. I am new to the sight but have been working on getting a gastric sleeve since April. I was approved last week! I almost threw up when they told me. Lol! I was not a heavy child but as I went through college and got married it seemed like all I did was put on weight. I tried weight watchers and atkins and nutritionists and it seemed like I would lose a little bit of weight and then I would stall and then I would go back to eating the same way again. I have been through a lot in my life and stress is a big factor. My father died when I was nineteen and my mother died the day after my twin boys were born. I have a twin brother and half brothers and a half sister. My family is small. My husband is not supportive of this surgery. I feel all alone because of that. I was diagnosed with gastritis and that has put off my surgery because they thought I had h.pylori but I don't. My surgery date is suppose to be August 5. My husband wants to leave for vacation on Aug 9th. Idk if that is possible but I am going to try. We are going to NC and we live in NJ. We are driving. God help me! I am glad I have found this sight.

    Omg It's Cold In Az!!!

yes! I am now always cold, in fact freezing! I didn't even take my jacket off at work today and I am sitting in here (NW phoenix) in the living room shivering up a storm. I asked the nurse at work (a school) and she said that the body's metabolitism (sp?) has changed with the weight loss. Does anyone know if this is temporary or permanent? We just moved into a new house with a fire pit in the backyard and we had planned to roast marshmellows this weekend, but it's too cold to go outside to the fire! Stay warm my fellow desert dwellers.
  11. There is a woman who is a mentor to a lot of people on this forum - her screen name is Tiffykins. She has lost and maintained her weight, and is now about mid-way into her pregnancy. She has done a lot of research on pregnancy and VSG,. She would be a great resource for you to correspond with. You could find her and send her a private message, if she doesn't happen to see your post.

    elliptical machine

I have a proform xp 160. I've had it for about 3 years. It's very sturdy and has a weight capacity of 275 lbs. I also use the precor machines at the gym. They make home versions as well.
  13. Hi guys! My name is Jaymie and I have been banded since 2007. I initially lost 70 of the 90 lbs I wanted to lose. I started developing really back heartburn and reflux and the Dr unfillled me and I have since gained 15 lbs. I still have heartburn everyday and the Dr will not refill me (I understand). The Dr suggested that I get the revision to a sleeve. I had never even heard abou the sleeve until then and I have been debating doing it since I am slowly gaining my weight back. Can anyone tell me what they paid for this procedure and how easy was the recovery? Are you seeing better results from the sleeve? NO throwing up? I know you have probably answered this question a million times but if you wouldn't mind patience with me and answering it one more time I would be greatful. Thanks!!

    Lost Nothing!!

yes, my gf started WW and also is losing very well--BUT, i know that when she loses "patience"-she will gain again. i will lose patience--but the BAND will remind me that i really CAN'T eat like i did before. i definitely feel restriction now. i am NOT pushing food down myself at the same rate. it will be a slow loss--but i will lose. i managed to somehow lose 3 lbs (according to dr's scale) since last visit--and i really didn't try.
  15. How do you make one of those fancy weight tickers? Thanks in advance!

    Need some advice and information

Hi Jaymie, I'm only 2 weeks out from my band to sleeve revision so, I really can't tell you how well the band is helping with my weight loss. I was banded for 2 years. I lost 90# but gained back 20# while being unfilled. My problem was I could never achieve the "sweet spot" I was either too loose and could eat anything and quickly gain or too tight and would puke up everything and have horrible acid reflux. My doctor has been trying to convince me to revise to the sleeve for about a year. I needed that year to do a lot of research to see if it was going to be right for me. After my last complete unfill, I decided it was time. So far, so good! It is like night and day. I can eat without getting stuck, I haven't puked once, No more acid reflux and it doesn't hurt to eat like it did with my band. Right now, only 2 weeks out, I'm happy I've made the switch. I still have 15# to loose and I hope the sleeve will help me with that. However, at this point, I will be thrilled to just maintain my weight loss. In all the research I did, I found that the vast majority of people that went from the band to the sleeve are extremely happy with the switch. My doctor won't even do the band anymore because of all the problems associated with them. My revision was done in one surgery. It was much easier than my band surgery. Less pain and I'm feeling like myself much faster. The 1st week out I was very fatigued but not in pain. As a matter of fact, I haven't used any pain meds since coming home from the hospital. I know that everyone recovers in a different way. I guess I've been lucky. Good luck in you decision. If you have any other questions just ask. People on this board are very helpful and friendly. First Fill Today!

I was banded on Jan 27th and i have my first fill in a couple weeks and i am pretty nervous about it. How did it go? You are doing so great with your weight loss!
  18. Hi everyone I was sleeve 3/20 and I purchased Coco butter firming lotion to help prevent loose skin. It may not 100% prevent it but at lease I am doing something to help. Start using a firming lotion of your choice before the weight start falling off but if you hadn't reach your goal start using its not to late. I lost 120 pounds on weight watchers but gain it all back however I didn't have loose skin because of the firming lotion and I used Jillian Michaels No More Trouble Zones DVD for 7 months and it worked. This is totally from my experience and since history repeat itself I am doing it again but want allow history to repeat with gaining the weight back after surgery because I feel that God gave me s second chance to get it right????????????

    Firming Lotion

I hope it works. I lost 85# on weight watchers years ago and didn't have much of a skin issue because I was still overweight. My excess skin got worse the closer I got to a normal weight/size post sleeve but I lost alot of weight. I lost 60# and got to a normal weight when I was 20. I had no excess skin and could wear a bikini. There are various factors.a

    I need help/ ideas

I lost 42 pounds preop and post op (down to 363 from 405) for the first two "liquid" weeks (back when I was banded 8/29/08) and then slowly gained back to 378.5 on 5/7 when I went and got this fill. In the 25 days since my fill I have lost 26.5 pounds and am now down to 352. This is ALL because of the band and finally realizing what it is to eat about 1/2 cup of food and stay full for 6 hours or so. I don't know how much you've gained and I don't know how much fill you have but go back to your doc. You will NOT be the first person to gain. You're only a failure if you quit. Believe me, restriction is worth it.

    A few questions

Medically supervised program refers to some sort of followed program that you check in with your doctors about weekly or monthly. I have the same requirement and for my health care they have what they call a shared medical meeting once a month were its a group of people and you have a leader- usually a dietitian or the weight loss program leader- who discusses ways to help change habits we have learned along the way. During the meeting you are called out of the room and weighed and speak with your doctor to make sure you're on plan and are doing well. It's mainly getting you to make smarter choices and help with changes after the surgery. They have us track food and exercise and bring those along. Most insurances require that along with the medically supervised program you have a steady weight loss before the surgery so it goes hand in hand. I also did a very low calorie diet with shakes and bars which I checked in weekly for but that also qualified as a medically supervised program.its all to make sure a person is set up for success after the surgery so I would check with your health care provider to see what they offer. As far as the insurance accepting the surgery I don't know what to tell you. Every one is different and I would definitely talk to your weight loss doctors about it as well if you haven't already. I also had my primary doctors write recommendation letters for the surgery for bettering my health- which was also part of the presurgery requirements for me- but if you have yours do the same they can always help better your chances and/or counter the denial if that's what the insurance decides. I don't foresee it being a problem though... I called my insurance people and asked lots of questions and focused on the requirements and had them send me a copy. If you qualify for the surgery based on the requirements I don't see why they would deny you. Good luck with everything!!!! Cheryl

    A few questions

I was also banded in 2006, and starting over. What month were you banded in? As far as the Heart Condition... If your Heart Dr. clears you, I would think that your Ins. Company would call that a co morbidity. It is a Medical condition that could possibly be helped by weight loss. As far as the Medical Dieting That is supervised by your Surgeon, and PCP. They usually last for a period of months. Do you still have your old Band (Sorry Forgot) I too went to a new surgeon, and if it needed to be changed (4cc), Then he was just going to put me in the hospital, and do it. Call your Ins. Co., and get some questions answered, and take notes. Myself I had both knees replaced back then, So I can only walk some, that's it. Good Health to you, Shirley.

    First months weight loss

My surgery weight was 284.3, in the first month I lost about 30lbs. I've had a couple big loss weeks, and a couple of barely any loss weeks. On average I've been losing 4-5lbs a week.
  25. [/size]] Hi everyone, I have my surgery booked for April 27, 07. I'll start my fast on April13, the day I host a coffee morning. Luckily for me my coffee friends are all supportive and will help me along the way. We've been meeting for 18 years. My husband is on board as well and jokes about getting the surgery money back from the money we'll save on food. I started gaining weight after a car accident that prevented me from exercising alot. Now I think I'll join a gym and just DO IT.
