    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

I wish I didn't have it but I do. First week is 3 to 4 ounces of protein with 2 meal replacement shakes and second week all liquid, well lucky you.
  2. My surgeon doesn’t require a pre op diet. So far I haven’t found any stats comparing long term weight loss between the two. If it’s strictly for the reduction of liver I don’t understand why all docs wouldn’t want that. I’m just two weeks away and not required to do the liquid diet, which is good because I have a music festival to go to next weekend and I don’t think beer/cocktails is part of the liquid diet no matter how clear the liquid is 🤪
  3. Thankfully I only have a two week pre op diet that consists of eating low fat/ low carbs… but I can still eat until the day before where I have to do all liquids. I was told if the liver isn’t shrunk enough an additional cut needs to be made to physically move the liver over making room for the surgery. Good luck everyone in their pre op endeavors!
  4. It seems odd to me that there is not a pre surgery protocol across the board. Some people need a liquid diet weeks before and then there’s those that don’t have to do it. I wonder (and I’ll look into it) if there is a difference in the outcome.
  5. Glad you're having an easy time! The only thing I'd say is to expect a small stall soon. Not to poop on anyone's parade but I've been on here long enough to know this is usually what upsets people early on but it'll be completely normal & it'll break on its own
  6. Awwww - don't worry, Carla. To be honest, I wouldn't say I'm feeling weak. I am very relieved - i don't have to think about what i will or wont eat and that is a massive relief! Remember, its only two weeks honey. You got this! xx

    May 2023 surgeries

@AmandaD. It's hard to give a definitive yes or no. Everyone is different. My experience. I didn't have any issues drinking. I had rny, but not hernia repair. My issue was, liquids taste off. I'm still dealing with that almost 3 weeks out.
  8. Hey Mona19234 - you have your surgery the day after me! I started my pre-op liquid diet today - its not been too bad to be honest. I had a bit of a headache earlier but that seems to have really subsided now. The excitement has helped I think because for me it marks the beginning of the road to the surgery - cant believe I'm two weeks away and counting. What surgery are you having done? I'm having a bypass.

    May 2023 surgeries

Hello! New to this community. I’m 1 week post-op and feeling great! Anyone else?

    Dry skin...

I believe that good skin happens from the inside out. Hydration, nutrition etc. Slathering on a bunch of lotions helps in appearance and prevents the loss of water in the outermost layer of our skin. Does dry go away after Bariatric surgery? IDK, I'm only six weeks out but hopeful.
  11. Congratulations 🎊🎉. I am the same as you! I hate waiting-especially when it’s something I’m really looking forward to. Thankfully the approval process wasn’t long. On May 1st my navigator informed me she’d be submitting my request that week. On May 11,2023 she called and said that I’d been approved. I was able on that Wed to see the approval in my BCBS app. On 5/15 the secretary called to schedule me for 6/5/23. I started this journey back on 2/21/23. It was rough lol. My navigator said she at one point thought I was about to give up…. She was right lol 😂. But here I am!!! I’m following this to see your surgery date!! It seems like we’ll be really close in dates!! Congratulations again

    embracing it

Agree! When he wants to order out, he needs to pick, otherwise I have no interest since I know I would not finish it. I can break a salad or meal into 3/4 meals easily.

    Dry skin...

Yes, blame it on the hormonal change. I was never one to use lotions etc but after the surgery I try to. I got the rinse body lotion so I use it before getting out of the shower and do not forget. I also have very dry scalp, I use coconut oil once a week but I heard castor oil is also good for hair loss. Sent from my SM-S916U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  14. I think that the straw that broke the camel's back, was not being able to get into ketosis, despite fasting and eating very low carb for three weeks straight. I figured that my metabolism was broken at that point. I was diabetic, had high cholesterol, and my blood pressure was slowing creeping up. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
  15. Hi Folks! I've been browsing the community for awhile now, but with my sleeve scheduled in two weeks (May 30), it's time to dig in. Does anyone have any recommendations for resources (articles, videos, books?) for partners/spouses/family members who might benefit from a bit more education (or, reality check?) about what they can expect as a support person for a sleeve patient? I have tried to explain as much as I can to my husband and I believe he wants to be helpful, and he's taking off the first week to help me recover and deal with the kids and household, BUT I would love for him to understand the sheer gravity of this life change. I feel like hearing this information from someone besides me would be really valuable. Like, I am not going to want to cook meals for the two of us the way I used to. He may be on his own for meals A LOT, especially the first 6 months to year. I've told him this, but I wish he could hear it from another source. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
  16. I know of some people who had it done in 2022, so I was intrigued but continued to try to do it on my own and failing. A week before I called the doctor I went to the Grand Canyon, and among the pictures my husband asked why I was posing a certain way. I wasn't. It hit me that I was no longer 230 but nearing 290, and I had no control of my body. I was sleeved 2 months after that day. Sent from my SM-S916U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. I was approached by someone recently asking why I would have surgery with injectables now available and that surgeries were on the way out. 😮 I told her I doubt they are "on their way out." I explained that I had medical issues that needed to be addressed and the surgery would resolve them. Also the shot is expensive and not covered by most insurance companies. Any weight lost using it is regained as soon as you stop using it. So on it for life and around $1200 a month. It was when I heard it called Metabolic surgery and learned that it would heal my prediabetes, my high blood pressure, my insulin resistance, my sleep apnea, reset my metabolism and weight setpoint, stop my progression of stage 3 kidney disease, halt acid reflux, gout, inflammation and water retention, joint and back pain, incontinence and lastly...ability to fit into a pair of jeans

    Post op pain

I’m 2 weeks out as well and yes I have the stinging feeling near my belly button. The NP said it’s from swelling and advice I take ibuprofen 4 hrs apart from Tylenol.
  19. Little bit about me... Had the lap band in spring 2007 after hitting a high of 450... dropped down in to the 320s... stalled, had some different life issues cause some emotional issue... needless to say I bounced back up nearer to the 380s at one point. Settled in around 360 and decided to go get a revision to DS... which was Friday. Weight at surgery was right about 360. Stepped on my home scale this morning... 338.4. It's a lot in a short time. I feel like a million bucks, though. I've taken minimal painkillers other than tylenol in the last couple days. Woke up with some pain in the center of my back and couldn't really get comfortable after that... so I took one of my happy pills this morning at 8. I've done a good job staying hydrated, slightly under protein target but working on it. I've been able to move around the house (up and down stairs as well) without much issue. All the internal plumbing is working. Follow-up is tomorrow morning with the surgeon. Should I be waiting for the other shoe to drop? Am I doing *too* well to expect this will continue? Is reality going to kick my butt in the next few days?
  20. My husband went on a camping/hiking/biking trip with his buddy. While he was away, I got caught up in my feelings, wishing that he and I could do something like that as a couple, but knowing that I wouldn't be able to keep up, would be uncomfortable, tired, sweaty, etc. I started googling, found a surgeon who was having an initial class for potential patients, and signed up for the class. A week later, I picked up my husband from his camping trip, and told him I was going to have WLS. I was scared to tell him, but he was so supportive, and I knew I'd made the right decision. It's been a dream life ever since!!! We still talk about the day I picked him up from his trip and announced my surgery! LOL!!
  21. I’m a side sleeper too. I found a binder or spanx helped. It took about 2 weeks to feel comfortable sleeping. It turned out stomach sleeping was most comfortable.
  22. I’m 3 weeks post op RNY and am now beyond the period of post op pain etc, feeling physically good. But the mind work has been on-going. A friend asked me what my final straw was given there are injectables out there etc and I had to think about it. I didn’t have a crushing moment- it was more a collective of discomforts and feelings of being on the outside looking in, always. It was not finding clothes that fit, turning down invites bc I felt uncomfortable in my body, never wanting to eat in public (like strolling with an ice cream) for fear I’d be called out- essentially the meanness that I encountered on a daily basis. The scrutiny by me on myself was far more viscous than anything anyone might throw down but I didn’t like the wall I’d built up to protect me from the world. Did you have a moment or was it a slow unfolding that brought you to going forward with surgery? Thanks for your candor and vulnerability on this one ❤️

Puking my guts out today :(

When I went to sip my water 30 minutes after the steak meal, I knew something was wrong. It hurt when it hit my stomach then came back up. I waited and tried again. Same for the next few hours. I guess I could have laid down and tried to let it pass but read steak can sit in your stomach for a long while? Plus, I reasoned if it's blocked, why not get rid of it naturally instead of paying a doctor to go in and fish it out. Hopefully vomiting didn't do any damage 6 weeks post-op and I knew I needed my water, so I kept drinking every 30 minutes, till it went down. Water would always initially cause a small pain after a solids meal for me, so sometimes I'd wait an hour before drinking anything. But it was usually only that first sip, then things would pass through. I'm ok now and back to eating softer foods for the time being. I'm in no hurry to go through that again. And yes, I agree. If not being able to sip water without it coming back up had continued, I would have called my doctor or headed for the ER.
  24. Can't say I avoided it. The stall hit me hard & it lasted almost 4 weeks
  25. I slept on my back mostly prop on 2 to 3 pillows at first, but little by little I was trying to sleep on my side. I would mimic the side position with my legs even though my torso was straight lol. I started doing a towel rolled and sleeping at an angle, by 3 weeks I was sleeping on my side peacefully.
