  2. It's been a couple of weeks since I posted, so here's my update. I finally got all of my weight loss study paperwork sent to my surgeon and they told me to go have my blood work re-done before they would submit to insurance, just to be safe. I went and had that done yesterday (they got it on the first stick!), they said it would just be a couple of days then they will fax to surgeon! I'm so nervous about insurance approval now it's ridiculous. I'm terrified they will deny me again bc I only maintained on the study, the weight just wouldn't come off. I would weigh in the morning and have lost 7 lbs, then by my afternoon appt it would all be back even if I didn't eat ???????? I'm so close now, I just can't give up! Anyone else have crazy nerves about insurance approval? I think this is the worst part for me. Sent from my SM-T530NU using the BariatricPal App

    Final pre-op requirement done!

Get the guidelines from your insurance company and read them. Have you completed everything that your insurance company requires? Are your 6 months of a structured diet program documented correctly? Does your insurance require that you lose 5% on the weight loss program? Some do, some do not. Have you completed your psych exam and nutritional appointments? Most insurance companies require a psychological exam plus visits to a nutritionist. Is your surgeon requiring that you attend a support group before surgery? Best thing is to read the insurance requirements and talk to your surgeon's assistant if you have any questions. Hopefully your surgeon's assistant is now doing her homework too - obviously they didn't do it before they submitted the first time. My surgeon's assistant has NEVER had a patient denied. Good Luck.

Day of Lap Band Surgery Time Frame?

Just had my surgery on 1/18/06! I remember exactally how you're feeling!! Here goes! Surgery was scheduled for 8:30am 6:45am Check in at hospital/Prep for Surgery (Put in IV, paperwork.....) 8:00 a.m. Anastesiologist visited me 8:20am Dr. Lopez came to see if hubby and I had any ???'s 8:30am TO THE ER!!! 10:00 a.m. Waking up and heading to recovery 11:00 Leaving recovery heading to my room (I was awake the whole time in recovery/pain very minimal) 12:10pm Hubby & I were walking the halls (they told me to go home I had to walk/pee/do barium swollow test) 1:00pm barium swollow test---it was weired! LOL! Afternoon drinking liquids Had 1/2 dose of pain med at 1:00 and 1/2 before dismissal At 3pm waiting for the doc to release me 5:00 pm on my way home! Believe me when I tell you that this is by FAR the EASIEST surgery I could imagine. I've had a c-section and gallbladder (the open way! yick) and this was a snap. I only took 1/2 doses of pain med. Took one on night of surgery and 1/2 the next mid-morning, 1/2 night after surgery at bedtime and that was it. I was walking up and down the street for exercise, doing my liquids and resting. I went into the office 2 days post op for several hours. Today's my first fill...Kinda nervous about that but ready to get the weight loss show on the road! LOL! Good luck and keep your smile!
  5. I'm 23 years old and I have been researching Lap Band Surgery for a few days now. But would like to get some advice from people who have actually had this procedure done. I'm 5'1 and weigh about 196 lbs. I have struggled with being overweight for the last 6 years or so. I have tried diet and exercise many times but have not lost more than 5 lbs. I'm depressed almost all the time because of my weight. I have some lower back pains and knee pains quite often. I have many headaches and migraines but not sure if this could be associated with my weight. I am hoping that I would qualify but I'm not sure. Do you think I could possibly qualify for this? And does Medicaid pay for this type of procedure? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Less than 100 pounds to lose

Lapbandmexico: I also believe it has a lot to do with everything you've tried in the past. I have about 50-60lbs. I would like to lose. At first, I thought lapband was too drastic for me. I've done the strict diet thing and I exercise on average 4-5x/wk doing a lot of running/cardio/weights/etc. I have not been successful at losing weight on my own. So, I look at the lapband as a tool to help me along my journey. I think it just depends on your past experiences and how you feel in general. Everyone is different. I would definitely tell you to do your "research" as it definitely isn't a "quick fix". Good luck to you, whatever road you may choose.

Still Waiting on Insurance - UHC

Hi, I have UHC and have had them for the last 6 years. When I called they told me that I had to have a BMI over 40 and have had to be obese for over 5 years. Well, I did not meet those requirements. I found a great Dr. Dr. R Vohra in Hewlett, NY. His staff is wonderfull. I started all of the pre op testing and found out that I had/ have sleep apnea. In the recommendations from the sleep apnea group was a restrictive weight loss prgoram through a Dr. This is how my Dr. was albe to get the surgery approved. I also had all of my Dr's write me letters of medical necessity for the surgery. This helps as well. my pre op info BMI 36 weight 204 lbs, only 5'3 tried everything and could not lose the weight. I had my surgery on 11/2/06 - 2 days banded, Good luck
  8. I'm afraid it will slip through my hands because of something stupid and I just don't know how I will deal with that. How do you guys stay positive? I think from an early age I realized that I have to become an unmovable force. You have to plant your feet firmly on the ground and resolve to go forward no matter what. During the approval process, there were many challenges. So I just put blinders on and continued forwards. When I went through the 6 months of medically supervised weight loss and exercise program required by my insurance company, they refused to pay for my doctor visits. Maybe a more accurate statement was that they paid for the first but not the second. They paid for the third but not the fourth. They paid for the 5th but not the 6th. When I challenged the insurance company, they claimed they made a mistake but would not try and take the payments they made to the doctors back. It made no common sense. They mandated this medical requirement. Also when I choose a doctor for one of the specialized tests required during the second round of pre-op tests, I choose this doctor based on the fact that he was within network. But the insurance made payment as if he was out of network. When I challenged the insurance company and told them their own online list of medical personnel listed this doctor as within network, they still objected. They said it must be some clerical error and they were not responsible for the payment. So don't give up but be prepared to dig your heals in and then move forward. Set your fears to one side and focus solely on your movement forward.

    Lane Bryant graduates

I am also in that "tween" size range now, but am hesitant to spend too much money, since I am not even halfway to my goal weight. Lane Bryant DOES go down to size 14, I also like Coldwater Creek, but only when they are having a good sale. I shop the Coldwater Creek clearance section, which is usually marked a percentage off of the marked price. Yesterday, I went to one of their outlets, and their clearance section was an additional 50% off. I picked up one pair of capris in a 16, and one in a 14, figuring that will carry me for a few months. I paid a total of $21 for both pairs, including tax. I have also found some great t-shirts at Costco which come in a size XL, they seem to fit me really well at the moment, and they are only $14.99. And I just bought a pair of workout pants at Costco for about the same price. If you have time, thrift stores are ALWAYS a great option at this point. Whenever I have time, I like to browse the thrift shops for things that might fit me now, or in the near future.

    Weight to go!

I've stated making the changes that needs to happen to assure me when I get the band that well I use it to the best ability I can, including exercise. I usually do 6-9miles a week and just picked up some weight lifting to hoping have abs someday and toned arms. Do you have any suggestions on how they stated exercising and gradually worked there way up to where you are today? Its amazing how some of you guys look and I know that exercise will help me get to my goal. Please help!

    My sister is a yo-yo!

So- my sister &family are coming for a visit this week. She, like me, has struggled with her weight most of her life. I have always been the heavier of the two of us (still am). I guess about a year or so ago she started this pre-package soy diet plan from her local hospital. She did great and was really looking good and then life happened and she gained back 20+ lbs. Now, she is back on her "diet food" and is bringing all of her meals with her and says that is all she will be eating. Not long after I got the band, I realized that I will no longer refuse to celebrate life, events, birthdays, ect... having to be excluded food wise. I can have a little of whatever and not worry about. I may go up and down a few lbs but I have a great tool to help me keep it under control. I have been on a plateau for 2 months now and although it is frustrating, I am not devastated and know it will pass and I will start dropping lbs again. I will not yo-yo but make healthy choices and enjoy those treats once in a while. I am glad I will be able to take vacations in the future and not have to take "diet" food with me. I hopefully can learn to make great food choices from what is available to me.

    Reached Fill Limit

Has your Dr checked your band to make sure it's not leaking? Has your Dr checked to ensure that the band is in the correct place and that it has not slipped and there is no erosion. Also some types of band can actually have more fill in them than the supposed capacity. I have heard of a number of cases of this with the Realize band. The other questions to ask are:- What are you wanting from the band. Are your expectations in line with reality. To explain. If you are expecting the band to make you feel full the way it did before you were banded well sorry that is not going to happen. Are you expecting the band to stop you eating certain foods? Again that is not going to happen. If anything if your band is too tight you are more likely to eat high calorie sliders that do not fill you up and cause you to gain weight. Maybe you should tell us a little bit more about how long you have been banded, what you are eating , how often etc. That might enable us to give you some helpful tips. In the meantime look up some of the brilliant magazine articles (on this site) written by Jean MacMillan. They are excellent and give a lot of advice and insight into what the band does and doesn't do.

Hi everyone I finally decided to have the lapband, I go for my first siminar on the 30th. I am so GLAD I found this website, Best Wishes on your weight loss journey
  15. Hi all! I have been reading posts for a couple of weeks now-i couldn't figure out how to post anything. I am in the process of doing the 6 month nutritionist thing and tonight I have to go to a weight loss seminar. These are all requirements of bcbs. Is anyone out there at the same point as me in this journey? Can anyone tell me if these 6 months fly by? Take Care!
  16. What makes this surgery different than any other cosmetologic action. Isn' t lifting kinda butchering the body for instance? Don't we have the right to feel more confident, sexy, beautiful etc... I'm what's considered as a low BMI(35) though it's not. It's still obese at least in my country where most women look like top models. I love life and I want to have it the way I deserve it. I'm an emotionnal eater and the more I struggle with my body image the more my problems grow bigger. I have gained all my extra weight (98lbs) in 1 year and I'm paining to take it off since 7 years now!! I lose 2 to 4 and so on... So go figure. I have no health issues and I paid for getting sleeved because I believe I deserve it. The same way as any one else. We shouldn't be ashamed of our dreams! I could write a thesis about it but my language won't allow me. I hope I made myself clear ) [Don't let your emotions make you their b***h]
  17. I think many would be reluctant to say that they are doing it for vanity reasons. Weight loss surgery seems to be such a taboo in the general public. I get "Oh you don't look like you need surgery, you're not THAT overweight." Well yea I am, and everyday I see something else that doesn't appeal to me at this weight. Clothes don't fit, I don't recognize myself when I look in the mirror, i don't feel attractive even though my husband loves me to pieces. I don't have the typical comorbities, but I do have lupus which puts enough strain on my body to make me feel like crap, I don't need the extra weight adding to my aches and pains. When it comes right down to it, I want to be thinner, I didn't diet because I wanted to be healthier, I dieted because I wanted to be thinner, and more attractive, and be able to walk into a room and turn heads. I want to be able to shop for clothes and not have to go to the "big-girl" section...the clothes there are god-awful, and who the heck decided that prints would make a big-chick more attracticve? I don't want to continue to gain and loose the same damn 30-40 pounds over and over again and never get to my goal. And strangely enough I want my kids and my husband to be proud to say that's my mom/wife. Not that they aren't now, but I am sooo much hotter when I am in onederland..hehe The health benefits are going to be an added bonus as far as I'm concerned...shallow...maybe. Honest...absolutely.

    Esophageal Mobility Problems

I know how bad you want the band and If you are like me you will not want to hear this but the band and the esophageal dysmotililty work against each other and neither can work with the other. I have really not lost any weight since I developed the motility problem I lost my weight the first year before the swallowing problem started now all I can do is maintain. You do not want to start out with this problem it will only get worse as time goes by.If you can it would probably be much better to have one of the other surgeries. I know you dont want to hear this and I am not a doctor but I have been thru the ringer lately and i have read everything I can find on this and they do not work together. Go to the specialist and hear what he says but just remember most did not start out with this problem it developed over time . I hope you will get a good report from the specilalist and I will be praying for you. Becky

Looking forward to my new beginning

I am with you. I have tried so many diets Atkins, Weight Watcher, Nutrisystem. Somehow I always seem to go back to my old eating habits. I get hungry watching others eat the BAD foods that I was avoiding. When my weight would plateau I would give up. I am hoping that the band will keep my full and keep me from craving the BAD foods or at least from overeating those bad foods. I am hoping with the additional help with the band, I will lose weight a little easier and be able to work out more with more energy. My surgeon will be submitting to the insurance company this week for approval. I am keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck!

    Lump In Ur Incision Area?

You mention that it hurts when you bend. Please DO NOT BEND. I am a stay at home mom with young kids... and its second nature to me to just be picking up toys throughout the day, or dropped things etc. If the pain is burning, pulling, aching, tearing etc. You could have what happened to me. Please see my 'story' post. There are stitches in your muscle after surgery and you can 'pull' a stitch. If you are not careful you can 'tear' your muscle! (That's what happened to me. I've been recovering in bed for the last 14 days. Not fun. Weight loss low. Hard to drink water on top of all the PAIN. So please be careful, contact your Dr as soon as you can. But in the meantime, no bending, twisting or stooping. Be careful getting in and out of bed. Good luck! Please keep us posted!
  21. Ok this is so strange....I had been at a plateau for a while and was talking to a dear girlfriend of mine who had the band the same time i did (we started at nearly the same weight 4 lbs difference and we are the same height) anyway I was telling her I am eating about 1000-1200 cal a day but I am burning about that many calories a day doing exercise. She told me she eats a lot more than I do and she's losing weight quicker than me and she's not exercising much. So I tried eating more and I lost 4 lbs WEIRD Huh...could it be that they tell us to restrict our calories too low now our bodies think we are starving ourselves? But when we actually give our bodies food it likes us again? Has this happened to anyone else?
  22. Howdy! Well, Im getting ready to attend my initial consulation meeting with a local doctor. I never considered lap band but after attending a meeting to support my bestfriend and reading which weight loss tools others have tried...myself included...before choosing lap band I decided it could be for me. I know I'm in the very beginning of my journey but I'd like some advice to help guide my direction. First, I'd like to know if anyone has ideas on what sort of questions I should ask the doctor... Lastly, as I've read some of the threads on pre/post op and it sounds kinda scary but what scares me most is high blood pressure, type II diabetes, heart disease...and anything else that could alter my quality of life...so another question, if I may...what are some things to do post op to minimize any uncomfortableness you might have experienced.... I know we're all different but a little knowledge, positive attitude, and a deep breath might help me through it.... Thanks and I'm so excited to be a part of a community where we all understand eachother! Thanks, Aggiegal
  23. heeey lap band fam im new to all this so ill make it short and sweet like my self lol. im not banded yet but my date in set for jan 19th 2011 im having it done in TJ by dr. Rodriguez. Im so nervous about the whole thing iv talked to a ref list from beliteweight of people who have been banded and some of them told me they lost very little weight. To be honest thats a huge worry for me seeing as though im a broke college kid who scrimpt and saved for this sugery. Another concern is the fact they they are going to use some type of surgical glue to close the incetions, but the main thing i really need your guys help with is the pre and post op diet.
  24. My SGV was Feb. 15, 2011 and I lost 25 pounds the first month and then have stopped I continue to loose inches but discouraged about my weight loss ... has this happened to others?
  25. Ok so I had my first fill done today and it wasn't so bad. The doc numbed the area around the port and stuck the needle into the port. I am a bit scared to eat though because I do not want to throw up. He told me I could do mushies today and go back on solids tomorrow. The only bad thing about the visit....I gained 7 lbs since surgery. :frown:
