I am almost three years out from being sleeved in June 2013. My highest weight was 302 lbs. my current weight is 173 lbs. I have gained about 15 pounds from my lowest weight since surgery. 10 of those pounds came within the last year. I am ready to jumpstart the weight-loss again and would like to hear from others who've had my same situation. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I've been away from the site for a few months. After my mom passed away back in October, I found myself returning to food for emotional comfort. I miss her everyday, but after 4 months of no weightloss, I've decided I need to get over it and kick things into high gear. I called my Dr.'s office because I had not seen him in like 3 months. Every appointment I had kept getting canceled and rescheduled another month and half out, so I have not been getting regular fills. Up until 4 weeks ago. I called the clinic and asked if they could see me and give me a fill. The doc there said I should have already been to the halfway point of my band being filled and was adament that she was going to get me caught up and back on track. She gave me a fill and said come back in two weeks. I was feeling slight restriction again...yay! 2 weeks later I went back and she gave me another fill...this time I felt a lot of restriction and even had a hard time with some foods, but it's a good thing! I haven't weighed myself during this time..so I'm hoping there is weight loss...I can tell there is, just not sure how much. So I have another appointment this Wednesday with the same clinic and the doc will let me know how it goes....I finally feel like I am back on track and hope to get some serious weightloss logged into my journal. Thanks for your attention and I hope everyone is doing well.

First Day Back In The Gym... Im So Weak Now!
earth2terra replied to Donny's topic in Fitness & Exercise
The upside to this is though you may feel weaker on weights how much does your loss so far affect what you can do cardio wise? For me I'm down 50 with preop and I can definitely tell the difference and yesterday was my first day back to work ( I'm a baggage handler for united) it was soo much easier climbing in and out of the planes I was blown away -
I know the feeling, I cheated everyday for example I had a bowl of Soup that had a little bit of veggies in it. I had a V8 I had some salad, also coleslaw, no sugar no bread, I have lost about 12 lbs so I am doing my job as far as weight loss goes. It isn't even that I am hungry I just can't stand this taste in my mouth. So try and focus on the positive and what you can have. I know it is very hard. Good luck Kathy

Swapping addictions, or "addiction hopping.". With very rare exception, it happens all the time. Look at anyone who has lost weight "naturally." And who has maintained the loss for let's say 5+ years. First of all, you'll have a hard time finding someone because they addicition didn't hop for very long. Second of all, you're 99% guaranteed to see a significant change in behaviors. E.g.: A smoker stops smoking, and begins to overeat instead. How many times do you hear "I stopped smoking" without hearing, "I gained weight"? An overeater loses weight, and implements a crazy/"obsessed" workout schedule instead. They maintain their loss, but few people can really make the life change of 6 hrs exercise per day. How long do you think the weight stays off? A hard core drug addict "sees the light," stops taking drugs, and becomes a religious fanatic instead. (I watched a loosely related family member go thrugh this And...yep, the drugs are starting to creep back into her life.)

I am just getting started on the lap band journey, in fact I haven't even made an appt with the surgeon yet. My dad had lap band surgery 2 years ago and has had great success. Since his surgery I have been considering having surgery myself. Unfortunately my insurance did not cover any kind of weight loss surgery. This March our insurance changed to AETNA who does cover Lap Bands!!! I am hoping some of you that have already gone through the approval process can give me tips on how to get approved without complications. This site is awesome btw!! what a great resource.

Had my 2 week check up and could not wait to get on the scale to be weighed,(imagine that) New weight 331, that's 14 pounds lost since surgery and total 42 if you include pre op loss. Surgeon checked my incision and reminded me that my port had to be put in deeper then usual due to a thick abdomen, he says this had nothing to do with my weight some people just have thicker bellies. He is hoping that he can do my fills in his office if not I will have to have them done in the hospital under xray. Next stop the dietitian and she wanted to know what I had been eating and if I had stuck to full liquids for the first 14 days, yes I did! Now I am on mushies and am so happy to have canned chicken there is a variety of foods that I can have during this phase and I am looking forward to it. My fill is not until May 14 but that's ok because so far I have been able to go close to 5 hours without getting hungry and the 3 oz amount really fills me up! Now I know that I have the lapband and not the realize band and my band is empty so maybe it's mental or maybe just having the band around my stomach is doing something to help satisfy me....whatever it is I am digging it. I must say that this has been a great experience and I am glad I made this big decision to change!

losing hair daily
mycherie000 replied to Lorettanjgal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello Everyone! I am pre-op looks like my surgery date will be the first of November. My surgeon is going on vaca and they are unsure what day. Just a few days ago, I found this website and have been reading everything because I am scared. Alot!! This is the first I have heard of hair loss because of the lapband. Is this the norm or a select few. i am already scared of having the surgery now I will lose my hair.. Maybe I should just try another diet. Sigh. Any advise would be great. -
I really started shedding about a month ago, which was 4 months post op. Some days it seems to come out in clumps. I had to give my vacuum a hair cut the other day! I went through this with my divorce 2 years ago too. Stress plays a big factor, so try not to stress, it goes hand and hand with weight loss and it will grow back with time. I think I'd rather be bald than go back to the way I was before (unhealthy!)....

Hello all! So i am almost 1 month post op and i'm now allowed to start eating some soft foods. I'm a little nervous to do this in fear of stalling even more or gaining weight. I may just be paranoid about this.... but i'm really nervous to switch back into eating foods because of this. How did switching back to foods affect your weight loss? How many calories do you think you are consuming a day? I don't want to eat too much.... Also right now i am just drinking about 2 protein shakes with water a day and getting 70g of protein. Do you think eating too little could be why i am stalling?

Both ideally, but put it this way - to strip fat cardio is great but you can lose muscle too. Strength training is slower to result in weight loss but will build you a better body in the long run. Both is perfect. In reality strength training makes me sooooo hungry, I simple can't help but eat more. For my body an hour of running a day is the best way to lose weight but now ive been at goal for five years, creating a calorie deficit isn't my focus but I literally get so hungry with serious strength training I have to restrict somewhat so as not o actually overeat. But I love what its doing for my shape!

worried about hair loss

Losing hair is a small price to pay to live a longer life. It should grow back. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Very happy for you Barb!!! I was originally scheduled for your date, but insurance glitch postponed it to 12/17. I wondered what kind of weight loss peopke would be at if I had gone on the 30th.

I've been doing cardio && strength exercises. I've heard that doing strength exercises makes you weight loss slow down so I was considering stopping that && just focusing on cardio.

:help:I was banded in May this year. I was 263 and am now 237. I have plateaued since June and stuck at around 240. However, the curious thing is that although the numbers on the scale don't seem to be moving much - I do feel like I've lost inches and am now able to get into smaller clothes. Has anyone else experience this? I am a little disheartened about the weight loss. I started the WW diet last week and writing everything down and sticking to my 28 points per day. I'm certainly eating less than I was before I was banded, and after 2 fills (in my 10cc band) I still get hungry but when I sit down to eat a meal I find food still gets stuck and I can't eat any more. Then I feel that I've ben cheated out of my meal and after an hour I am hungry again. The qustion is do I go for another fill to make it 3cc's and risk food getting stuck even earlier into my meal or do I continue as I am on this crazy plateau. I wish someone could give me a clue as to what is happening. Whilst I am happy to get into smaller sizes, and I know that the numbers on the scale shouldn't matter that much - I still want to see smaller numbers!!

Lots of things kinda weird about this. Start with the CPT codes for all three procedures mentioned. I think they are: VSG: 43843 Band: 43770 RNY: 43644 Then call the customer service # of your insurance provider and ask the person who answers to look through your plan and tell you the BMI requirements for each procedure. I advise doing this to start because usually the BMI requirements are the same (per provider) for all three procedures, and are based on FDA guidelines. I think for all three, it's currently a BMi of 40+, or a BMI of at least 35 with 1+ (or 2+) comorbidities. When they do require higher BMI, it's usually because they aren't yet recognizing the sleeve as a standalone procedure. Do you know if your insurance covers VSG as a standalone bariatric procedure? The other part that's weird is that your surgeon's office, I would hope, would have obtained the insurance requirements and informed you up front if your BMI was sufficient or not. You should not be finding out 6 months later that you never met the criteria to begin with. Or are they considering your weightloss during the last 6 months to be the loss that made you now ineligible? What was your BMI then & now? I was initially denied for the sleeve. I wrote my own appeal, my surgeon's office submitted it, and the procedure was approved about 3 days later. Long story short I ended up having to start over with a completely different provider, totally back to square 1. I just made sure they didn't have a chance to deny me this time.

Second Guessing Myself
Robert Olson replied to carrieann70's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my opinion medifast is like any thing else even weight loss surgery you can cheat and gain the weight back its just harder to cheat with your stomach that is limited to.how much it can hold. Its 99% mental. Good luck I had me sleeve Tuesday and look toward to the future -
Having lap band removed and looking at gastric sleeve, any others make this switch?
Jerald180 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
After having a lap band for 13 years with not so great success, roller coaster weight loss, and the inability to eat certain foods at all, I am having it removed in the future and wanted some I put as to getting the gastric sleeve while they take it out. Anyone else switch and have any insight or advice as to good move or not? I’m 68 and in relatively good health. -
Decision is sometimes straightforward with only one clue and answer. But having options; particularly considering the sleeve without available long term medical experience makes the decision difficult. It seems all of us passed the same experience. By the end of the day, sleeve seems though irreversible, minimally invasive. Still, if loss of weight is not satisfactory, a complimentary surgery ( duodenal switch or bypass) can be contemplated.

Hello to both of you and welcome to our forums. It is perfectly normal to get nervous and have second thoughts about weight loss surgery, or any type of surgery for that matter. I didn't once think of it in terms of mutilating my stomach. For me, I knew I would still have a fully functioning stomach, it would just finally be the size it needed to be for me to better be able to control my food intake. In terms of pain, I was actually very surprised at how minimal the pain was. I have had numerous surgeries, and of all the ones I had, the sleeve was the least painful. I think as others post in this thread, and as you read more through the forums, you will find that most people find the amount of pain one encounters with this surgery to be very minimal.

I have a question. I was told when I had my UGI that I had a very small dilation. I asked if it was because I ate too much or did anything else I shouldn't of. I was told no. I asked if they were going to remove fluid and was told no, everything was going down fine and that it was very slight. I wasn't even told to go on liquids...just that I was progressing nicely and my weight loss is good and that in fact the fluid was moving through so well that I probably could actual use a slight fill (but they wouldn't do it because of the heartburn and reflux). To this day, I still struggle with heartburn and occasional nightly reflux and lots of burping (most of this is the week before my period...sorry if TMI, but I get alot tighter then). Do you all think I should press this issue?? Is the dilation getting better/worse/the same? Am I hurting myself? I don't want to have any fluid taken out, but I don't want to hurt myself and potentually lose my band! have you ever heard of doing nothing for a slight dilation? Just any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
