Weirdest None-Scale-Victory - I'll go first
Tony B - NJ replied to chiquitatummy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congrats....keep trying on smaller clothing...You will be surprised that even though you don't think the weight loss is high enough to move sizes, your body is changing and you are getting smaller in places you do not realize. Your sizes are going to change rapidly. It is exciting to see the clothing sizes drop and extremely motivating. -
Went to the support group, now cold feet?

I mean, we know why people can't keep their losses off. It's not an individual failure, we're built for weight gain. But otherwise, I agree. -

I thought this exact thought for literally decades (I'm in my 60s). I can't even tell you how many times I lost weight - sometimes as much as 50 or 60 lbs - just to gain it all back again a few months later. And I had over 200 lbs to lose. How on earth was I ever going to lose 200 lbs if I couldn't even keep 50 lbs off? Yet I'd try again...and again...and again. And yes - that 3-5% figure you heard is what I've read as well. Without surgical intervention, supposedly only about 3-5% of people can lose a lot of weight - and keep it off (although honestly, I'm surprised it's that high). Unfortunately, I wasn't one of the 3-5%. It took me 40 years to come to that conclusion. yes - you absolutely can regain all of your weight after having weight loss surgery. But your odds of losing a ton of weight and keeping it off are MUCH better than they are without surgery. I never, ever, in a million years could have lost those 200 lbs without surgery. And I wouldn't be sitting here almost seven years later, still managing to keep almost all of it off (like many of us, I did have a rebound during year 3. Most people seem to regain 10-20 lbs after hitting their lowest weight). This surgery has honestly been a miracle for me. It's not that I didn't have to work at it - I did - hard - but I never could have done this without surgery. -

My last thought before surgery was the two women I have met who had surgery and kept the 200 lbs off 10+ years. All those years at WW and I never met people who lost and maintained a 200lb weight loss the “natural way.” Even the “before” pictures at the gym didn’t compare to the amount I need(ed) to loose and keep off. -

Did your provider give you pre surgery weight loss requirements? My understanding is it's a liver shrinking diet, it might Kickstart weightloss but it's about shrinking the liver to give the surgeon more room to manipulate. I would reach out to your providers office, let them know your concerns about the pre-op diet holding up/postponing your surgery. -

It's much less, unfortunately. Even the new obesity drugs don't work once you stop taking them. https://www.cuimc.columbia.edu/news/complicated-reality-weight-gain-weight-loss-and-weight-stigma -
Went to the support group, now cold feet?
mrsjo posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I’ve been in preop phase for 8 months in prep for bypass. Long story short I switched doctors after 6 months with old doc. I love the new doctor and almost ready for surgery, just took some time to get all records from old dr. Now my husband is on board and he’s seeing new doctor to go through WLS as well. We went to our first support group meeting last night and now I’m very confused and I think he is too. We now have this mindset that “we can do this”. He hasn’t been one to read or research much as I do, and he was amazed at all the lifestyle changes and tools you use to rewire your head and to be successful. He says well if we can learn that now I think we can totally do this! He bragged on how far I had already come and changes I’d made and he said I really think we can do this. I’ve kinda had that feeling all along but then again here I am 8 months in and only 25lbs down. Tell me this is normal or tell me something, anything? Isn’t it only like 3-5% of people can actually lose the weight and keep it off without surgery? I’m just so at a loss on what to do now…. -

Hi All, I have my surgery scheduled for March 15 and am about 2 weeks into my liquid+1 meal preop diet. But I'm struggling to lose weight even though I'm following the surgeon's guidelines. I'm super nervous they will postpone my surgery if I haven't met their weight loss goals for pre-op. Has this happened to anyone, any advice is welcomed? -
how does sleeve gastrectomy affect your appetite?
Arabesque replied to bombshellocks's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, the surgery does remove a lot of the area that produces the hunger hormone ghrelin. While the stomach is the primary producer it’s not the only place a hunger hormone is produced (small intestine, pancreas & brain too). For many, the surgery dues reduce appetite & hunger but it is temporary. It’s almost like the other areas compensate & start to produce more of the hormone to compensate because feeling hunger is important because our bodies do need food to function. The temporary loss of hunger does help our weight loss but equally as important is that it helps us to discern the difference between head hunger (cravings &/or emotionally driven hunger) and real hunger. Real hunger feels different. You’ll learn your cues for real hunger & how it feels for you. I feel restless & like something is wrong and when I realise I’m hungry I don’t crave a specific food or food type like sweet, carby or salty. Food is still a consideration every day & I do tend to eat to routine to ensure I get my protein in & the other nutrients in I need & that is the difference. I eat not as a comfort, to stop boredom, to satisfy a craving, etc. I eat to consume what my body needs to function. I still enjoy food & want to eat yummy tasty things but the yummy tasty foods are healthier & more nutritionally dense. -
Thanks for checking in - it's great to hear your update! Are you feeling relief from the GERD or is it too soon for that? Hope the pain goes away soon and that you get a good loss as well.

What everyone else said. Loose skin is a normal result of massive weight loss. You look young, so that might help lessen some of it, but some loose skin is just inevitable. I've been taking supplements from months before surgery and still take them daily, plus getting my water in and always using firming lotion after showering. This won't stop me getting loose skin. I'm hoping it *helps* a little, but I won't fool myself. But as Catwoman says, I will take this loose skin with gratitude over being 130kg.

You can’t prevent loose skin. Your skin has been stretched by the weight you’re carrying. Think of your skin like an old, overused, stretched out hair band. Can’t make that elastic. band tight again. But in saying that there are factors that can influence how much lose skin you end up with. Age (younger skin has better elasticity & will bounce back to a degree), how much weight you have to lose (I had hardly any loose skin at goal but with the additional 12kgs I got more than a pinch more), how long you carried your excess weight & genetics. Some loose skin isn’t very noticeable under clothes. Mine’s not & I can wear body con dresses with regular underwear. Others resort to surgery. I don’t mind the lose skin I have. It’s a reminder & I feel I earned it through the effort I put in to lose the weight. Also I’d rather have some lose skin than all those kilograms. But that’s me.

Does Mini Gastric Bypass 'feel' the same as being Sleeved?
Guest replied to slimsuz's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Really, really look into the weight loss with mini gastric bypass, also as revision. There's studies out there and they're all in favor of the mini. Weight loss is greater in every. single. study. Also, I know it really isn't meant as such, but it's kinda condescending to call RNY a 'full' bypass (not that you did that). It's just as much of a bypass as RNY -
Hey everyone, I have some exciting news, I got approved for gastric bypass this past Monday and, my surgery date is next month on the 22nd. I was just wondering what kinds of exercises that you guys have done and that you've had success in achieving also, I do have PCOS so I was just wondering for my fellow cysters how much weight have you guys lost in 2-12 months and what was your weight loss each month. I was also wondering what types of food did you guys eat after 2 weeks like what could you guys tolerate and, very lastly what can I expect before, during, and after my surgery?

Does Mini Gastric Bypass 'feel' the same as being Sleeved?
slimsuz replied to slimsuz's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks so much for posting, I've been hearing people say that they didn't feel much restriction after having bypass and that weight loss was much slower than their original vsg surgery. Appreciate your feedback, Im very keen to revise from vsg to bypass due to weight gain after 8 years. -
We all lose at different rates. What does your doctor say about your rate of loss? If you truly are sticking to your plan you may be experiencing a stall which can last several weeks. There is nothing to do or change, the stall will pass.

Does Mini Gastric Bypass 'feel' the same as being Sleeved?
Tomo replied to slimsuz's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision to full RNY (not the mini bypass since it wasn't covered by my insurance), and it feels the same but no Gerd. Main difference for me is a continuing low appetite even in the 7th month, double the rate of weight loss due to easy satiety off a couple ounces of food. -
I wanted to have WLS for weight loss. But I was told that because of my severe GERD that the sleeve was a bad choice. After doing a lot of reading on the net and forums I would have to agree. Most of what I have read reflects that most people who have the sleeve end up with GERD even without having it before surgery. So, with the reading and my surgeons advise, I will be having gastric bypass on 3/21.

The weight loss slows down as you reach your goal. Are you still watching what you eat and sticking to mainly protein? Are you still tracking what you eat? Watching portion sizes?
-
The closer you are to goal the slower the rate of loss. It can be really frustrating when that goal weight is so close & it feels like you will never get there. Your weight loss slows as you’re consuming more so your intake is almost at what your body needs to function & so you lose little or nothing (maintenance). You have a couple of options. You can continue as you are, be patient & see how your loss progresses. You likely will eventually lose that 15lbs or close to it. Or you can do more activity or reduce your food intake but both of these options will have to be continued if you want to maintain the lower weight if they are the only ways to lose the weight. Always worth a chat with your dietician. It can be easy to overlook something or they may suggest something to shake up your eating plan. Not everyone gets to their goal but that’s ok. Sometimes your body settles at a slightly higher weight than you expected. Or you make eating & activity choices based upon how you want to live & enjoy your life (which are a major considerations for long term success). A way of eating or exercise regime that is too restrictive isn’t sustainable in the long term. All the best.

I'm going to pack my phone charger, a robe and some slide on shoes for walking. Chapstick and hair things... toothbrush, toothpaste. My C-pap machine. I'm not really sure what else. Clothes to come home in. My 15 year-old daughter and I have been watching all the Oscar nominated movies before the Oscars at the end of March... if we haven't finished by my recovery time, we will take that time to catch up. My husband works from home and I homeschool my 15 and 17 year-olds (they will be on spring break the week of my surgery) and my daughter, who is 25 and lives 90 minutes away, is going to come home and "help" for a few days... which really means she is using my surgery as an excuse to come home and see the dog. I have a feeling we will be watching a lot of movies and if the weather is nice, we will be doing a lot of walking around the block. -

You are not an idiot! Weight gain and loss is a part of life, surgeries or not. I think it's a great step you can even recognize your patterns and ask for help. It's tough but I know there's hope. The biggest thing I see is to always make sure you have mental health support and put just as much work into that as you do the surgery or weight loss journey. I wish you luck and hope insurance helps you out with it! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
