Is there anyone that does NOT have trouble eating or drinking.
marfar7 replied to pjackson0523's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wait till ur on regular foods. It's easier to eat 4oz of yogurt than it is to eat 4oz of steak. I'm 3 1/2 mths post op and can only eat about 2-3oz of a TOTAL meal (including Protein, veggies and a carb). I'm hungry again in 2 hrs, but thats beside the point! They took out 85% of ur stomach. Don't worry. You won't be able to eat like you did pre op. I promise... -
What Do You Mix Unjury Into?
PattyGirl66 replied to indacrucible's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you are talking about unjury Unflavored? I mixed it in chicken broth soup, tomato soup, really any kind of Soups. Yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, milk, smoothies. I even heard someone say in their tea and coffee.... -
Hey everyone, I got banded April 12 and lately I've been feeling really hungry. Is it normal for water or fluids to go through with ease? I read all these threads about it being tough and others having their band slipped but no symptoms so I'm just wondering. Also I had 1 yogurt about 2 days ago and it went with ease. I haven't had anymore since then cause I read about the complications when skipping the diet rules. Any advice? I'm getting paranoid and I can't keep going to Mexico to reach my surgeon for little things I feel. ???£ Also did anyone get infections on their bottom incisions? Mine got infected and I'm in antibiotics for it to get better but it's taking super long (another paranoia)

Sorry to hear about the personal stuff going on. Never easy to deal with. That aside..I think the lack of appetite may be partially expected at this point in recovery. I say this because I also have hit this same thing...without all the stress that your dealing with. I saw my bariatric dr and RD and they both said that it was normal at the 8-10 month post op stage. They said that tastes have changed dramatically and things are beginning to go back to normal at that point. So it's just your bodies way of balancing out. I've had zero appetite for weeks now. It's been a challenge for sure. I went back to 2 shakes for Snacks and 3 small actual food chewing meals. My program wants us eating only 3 meals...any needed snacks need to be liquid...so I stick to that. But... My meals now are small for sure...maybe 4 ounces at the most. Greek yogurt with Protein low cal low carb granola mixed in for Breakfast....lunch maybe a few ounces of chicken breast with a few small pieces of fruit for lunch, dinner I'm not hungry at all...so then I usually will have some nuts with cheese. Or half an avocado with some protein. Hope some of this helps.

Madmax68 I'm having the same issue , but I did lower my protein intake. I just a purchased this Asian yogurt at Costco called Tarte (normally can be bought at Whole Foods) the protein is 12g per serving, super creamy, light, and it doesn't have the sour tartness of Greek yogurt. I can't stand the shakes anymore!

Day 2 of being banded and 2nd stage diet?
txflea posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today makes day 2 of my liquid diet. I stayed over night in the hospital last night after the surgery. Today I am home and I am starving.. I think. Im still sore and gassy but I question is when do you start stage 2? I tell myself I am going to wait a few more days and just stay on the clear liquid diet but the hungry side of me wants yogurt, or sf pudding, or a Protein shake..lol I go Thursday to my post op Dr. visit. Any suggestions?- 11 replies

Soft And Mushy Foods
honk replied to ☠carolinagirl☠'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My mushies were divided into two sections. Week three was greek yogurt (used hand blender to mince the fruit, and added fat free milk to thin it out) and low fat/cal cottage or ricotta. Week four was canned chicken or tuna. I mixed those with low fat laughing cow cheese, much better than mayo. For chicken and tuna my doctor said to weight them out to 3 oz. -
Increasing Protein Shake Consistency
Miss Mac replied to *****'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first thought was....I wonder what corn starch would do? I googled for that, and found this response on Ask Yahoo: "When making your shake, try to keep the amount of liquids involved to a minimum. Keep in mind that the amount of ice you are using could be a factor, which will also lessen the preferred thickness of your shake as it melts. The addition of more fruits will help to thicken the consistency. Non fat yogurts, in place of milk/water, will increase the total calories of your drink, but again, if thickness is the issue, this method can't be beat. But, if you're concerned about the calories, another and less conventional method would be the use of corn starch. Corn starch is flavorless and has almost no calories to speak of, and is commonly used by chefs to thicken sauces, and even some frostings. I mention that last part only to emphasize that it works for things that are sweet just as well as for things that are not. Use sparingly, however, because a lot can go a long way! One tablespoon per average sized blender ought to be sufficient, and make sure you mix it thoroughly. The corn starch may take time to fully thicken, so if you do decide to add more, remember to wait a full minute before doing so. Too much of this stuff is like cement! But just the right amount can be a simple and calorie-free way to thicken your Protein shakes." My second thought was to add milk to yogurt, rather than yogurt to milk. I hope you find something that works for you. I like my shakes thin, so I will add extra milk, almond milk, Jello Water.....hey, maybe you could use unflavored Gelatin (or flavored I guess), and prepare your shake ahead of time so that it can chill a bit. As a matter of fact, I put some sugar free orange gelatin in a vanilla shake today, and it tasted like an Orange Julius or orange creamsicle. Just yummy! -
Preparing for possible "yucky stuff" after surgery
Threetimesacharm replied to scsleever's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Your surgeon in Mexico will definitely give you pain meds. You will barely be able to drink your water and broth so I don't think you will need any other foods i.e. yogurt. Maybe some crystal light if you like for your water but for me right after surgery all of these sweet drinks I couldn't tolerate. My surgeon also gave me two bottles of gatorade. Meds in Mexico are also very inexpensive so depending on if you have to pay in the U.S. you may want to just by some there. I suggest to walk as soon as you can after surgery, I had no gas pain and my pain was minimal. I actually walked most of the night as I had slept all day waiting for my surgery time. Best wishes -
Stupid Question, but oh well, I'll still ask...
Diana_in_Philly replied to Coachthex32's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would toss a little shredded cheese in with my scrambled eggs. Also, finely mashed (with a fork) egg salad or tuna salad. I'm not a refried Beans person, so I didn't try that. (It's a texture thing for me.) The Ricotta Bake is amazing. I think I lived on that for the first week I was on purees. Also, Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt (15 grams protein) - personally, I love the coconut creme and salted caramel flavors. Just had a strawberry one for breakfast today. You'll find your way. You may find that stuff you liked pre-surgery, you don't like now. -

What do you eat on a normal day? Im worried :s
woo woo replied to yescobar's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'll be 2 months out on Monday, but for what it's worth here is what I am eating now. I suspect that you can eat more in a sitting than I can since you are at 5 months. Breakfast: Either a GNC Lean shake 25 (strawberries and cream flavor, pre-made) or one hard boiled egg with salt or occassionally 1/2 container of greek yogurt. If I don't have the lean shake, I will have 1/2 of a Premier chocolate shake (30 grams protein). Lunch: P3 Protein snack pack, which contains small portions of turkey, marble cheddar, and almonds. The whole thing has 13 grams of protein. Snack: Mini babybel cheese wheel, original flavor Dinner: Some kind of meat, such as meatballs with red sauce, or shredded beef taco meat (filling only), hamburger patty (can eat about 1/2), 1/2 cup chili etc I have not been cheating at all. If anything I will dip/mix things with sauces or mayo but the amount is so small I don't really sweat it. I haven't had anything with sugar yet. I have twice had one single saltine cracker with my food. When I plug this into MFP it comes to 650 to 725 cals daily. -
Hi guys, I've been MIA for a little while. We started pre-planning on Monday. I have had about 5 hours total Monday-Thursday to work on setting up my room. All of our other time has been filled up with meetings! I found myself working straight through lunch every day this week! I found out that I will have 11 students this year and still only one para . Pray for me! This will be a challenge. I'm doing my best to set my the zone plan, student picture schedules, and lesson plans for the month of August before I leave. Besides skipping lunch, my pre-op plan has been going pretty well. I have been sticking to the plan with the exception of a bowl of raisin bran and a greek yogurt a day. I'm gonna cut that out starting now. But, on a good note. I know that this last week and a half will fly by since I will be busy at work. I am getting more and more excited every day! Good luck to you all. Arisa

After weight loss surgery, you may need to eat three to six small meals and snacks per day, plus drink at least 64 ounces of fluids at times separate from your meals. Add your nearly constant eating and drinking to a busy lifestyle, and you probably have quite a few strategies for hitting your nutrition and fluid needs! Which meal and snack helpers do you use? Do you live off of protein bars and shake powders? Do you use pre-packaged salads and pre-cut veggies? Do you take advantage of ready-to-eat products such as rotisserie chicken, yogurt, and string cheese? Also, what are your indispensable helpers for taking your food and drinks everywhere with you? Do you have a favorite water bottle, protein blender, and set of containers? What other tricks do you have for making on-the-go weight loss easier? Share here!

Hi Beverly, Welcome to LBT! Of course the answer to your question is "follow your doctor's instructions"! In my experience, though, if you're already on protein shakes that means you're in the "full liquids" phase. That would include pretty much anything that goes through a straw--soups, smoothies, yogurt, puddings--things like that. To my mind that definitely allows for putting a banana in a blender with liquid. So what do your doctor's instructions say?

Call me crazy but I am practicing for my liquid pre op diet. My doctor requires a two week liquid diet pre operatively. The list says no fruit or yogurt😐. I don’t want to go into the two weeks cold and set myself up for cheats and extreme bitchiness. Has anyone prepped for the liquid diet by doing a few days here and there leading up to surgery?

Weight Gain 2 Years Post-op
Idairene replied to Idairene's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for your posts. I'd really like to hear from folks that are 2-3 years out of surgery. There are different challenges then. The Hunger and cravings come back, you've tried the same recipes and tired of learning new ones. The excitement of fitting in clothes or in an airplane seat is now something you take for granted. Your support system is less and there's a social and cultural expectation for you to go back to eat "normal" again. You've become active and have switched to a number exercise routines. And the reality hits that it is low fat cottage cheese and Greek yogurt as your primary diet for the rest of your life. In short, the thrill is gone and the hard work is really up to you -
I got on the scale this morning and I'm 193.5. Damn!!! So my goal is still 180 by x-mas, but now I have 13.5 lbs to lose. This morning I had a yogurt, lunch was a sald with lean ham and turken, 1 tbs of dressing, raisins, 1 tbs of cheese and 1 tbs of croutons. Thats 315 cals. The yogurt was 80 cals. So thats 395 cals so far today. I plan on having some cheese for a snack, 80 cal, and 1/2 cup of grapes, 55 cals. That leaves me with 470 cals for supper. My plan is to eat like this all week and see where I am at weight wise on Monday. I want to keep to 1000 cals per day (I am not adding my coffee with 2 tbs of hot cocoa, this is another 80 cals, but I decided that this will be my "cheat" for the day because I don't count it) I know I need to keep my protein up but this week I want to be all about the calories. If I need to adjust to get either more or less, I will know by next monday. Does this plan sound stupid? If so, what should I change?

FREE Nutrition advice
ncgypsygirl replied to urwhatueat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the offer of free advice! I'll take you up on it. I'm 5 days post-op so I'm in the liquid stage - Protein Shakes, broths, sugar-free popsicles and pudding, and lite yogurt, along with liquids like Crystal Lite and Water are my options right now. With that said, I'm STARVING. And I'm not talking about head hunger...those gnawing pains and growls from my tummy are hunger. I'm curious to know how long after you were banded did you get to the 1200 calorie minimum? My Protein shakes have 15g protein, but only 70 calories each, so I may need to look for different shakes. Also, I'm already at about 60 ounces of liquids per day plus a popsicle and a little container of sf pudding. Is this too much too fast? My instructions from the doc say to sip slowly and increase as tolerated. But the hospital nutritionist told me that it would likely take several weeks to get to the point where I could handle 64 ounces of liquid and 60 grams of protein. I don't want to do any damage, but I also don't want to become dehydrated because I'm not getting enough liquids. And I don't think I'm drinking too much because I've had no reflux, no pain, etc....no indications that I'm overdoing it. I'm just worried because I seems to be taking in more than the nutritionist thought I would. I've left her (and the nurse at my surgeon's office) a voice mail, but no response yet. Any advice would be appreciated. PS - If it matters, I logged my intake for the past two days and I'm having about 350 cals/55g protein. -
Agreed. Protein shakes, Greek yogurt, low-fat cream of chicken, mushroom, celery, tomato, low-sodium chicken broth, etc. are your best bet until your doc and nut release you to other foods. You can do it! And if I may suggest it, you might want to avoid breads and other starches. IMHO, they are the quickest path to less-than-desired results throughout your journey. Plenty of time to reintroduce that stuff (in serious moderation) when you are at, or closer to goal. Good luck!

Protien Shakes? Which Arr The Best?
RickM replied to kstalvey's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Whatever Protein drink that you find that you like and will drink is the best - the highest protein/lowest carb or fat drink is of little value if you can't choke it down. I've played with the Protein drinks for years (since my wife rejected them after her WLS several years ago). For chocolate shakes I have settled on the EAS powder that can be bought at Target, Walmart, etc. which I find has a fairly delicate flavor with little of the sometimes objectionable protein taste; adding some unsweetend cocoa powder can boost the chocolate flavor while cutting the sweetness while the SF chocolate syrups can boost the chocolate flavor while adding some sweetness - use whichever floats your boat. I also use the protein powders in SF instant puddings along with greek yogurt to boost their protein content. I also use the EAS to blend with other protein powders that I have tried and found to strong on their protein taste or aftertaste on their own (I wind up blending a lot of things in this post op world to hit the right taste/calorie/nutrition compromise.) Adding fruit to the shakes is a common and popular addition, though check with your doctor's plan - the rationale for most of the pre-op diets is to keep low carb to improve liver condition, so they may not want you adding fruit at this time for that reason. If they're just wanting you to lose a bit of weight pre-op and get used to protein shakes while watching calories, it may fit in. Good luck and welcome to the club. -
I just had my surgery on November 6th, going great so far! My 1 week post op appointment is tomorrow, hope to add creamed soups and yogurt to my diet.

Hello all..I had a really bad stuck episode about 14 days ago. Had to go in and meet Lapband Doc in ER for a total unfill. He put me on liquids for 7 days due to the intense vomitting I had. I moved onto mushy food such as yogurt, protien shakes 7 days ago. Mashed pototatoes and chili pureed still hurt my stomach. My chest also hurts when the food is going down and my uppper middle back. Kinda like a stuck episode but Im not stuck. I had a florascope done and the band is still in place. I also still seem to have alot of nausea. Have not vomited though. Doc doesnt think it is gallbladder as I dont show any symptoms of that. Has any one else gone through a really stuck episode? How long until you were feeling back to normal and eating real food again? Thanks in advance for advice.

Try a coffee no fat milk shake with a small amount if low fat yogurt or ice cream. Trust me it gets better you just need to hang in there for a short time.
