Is there anything you wish you'd been told pre-op?
notmyname replied to Pippa1703's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I second the comment about constipation. I mean, doc told me that I could get constipated, but I'd never had that happen to me, so I just thought it meant having a little trouble going. TMI ALERT: I didn't realize that I'd ultimately end up for over an hour and a half on the toilet, exhausted, crying, and bleeding, and still unable to get the poop that was part way out all the way out. This happened twice. And I didn't learn until later that my doc would have liked me to go to the hospital when that happened. Nor did I realize that "getting it under control" still means that it takes me at least 20 mn to go. -
Lol Not sure if your asking specifically me that question, but yes I am post op, 5 days. Feeling weak but still manageable. I am running a low grade fever. Going to see my GP tomorrow. Otherwise I work each day getting all my fluids. TMI: exploding diarrhea on 4 day post op. It was 6 day before having an actual BM. Felt better afterwards. Walking has been a challenge, it's very cold out, and with my fever, I just shiver. Sent from my Nexus 5 using BariatricPal mobile app

I frequently get hiccups, though they've calmed a bit as I get more used to the band. Sometimes they are very loud and strong hiccups, and sometimes they're tiny. I don't get them with every meal, though if I do get them, I might feel a little stuck...at the same time, I don't hiccup when I'm badly stuck. I almost never burp anymore, and when I do, they're tiny and I have to force it out. I really thought I was the only one because my surgeon's office hasn't heard of any patients having hiccups, and my local "band buddy" doesn't get them. Another (possible TMI) side effect I have is that when I'm stuck, my bowels want to move. The whole band lifestyle is pretty funny when you think about it!

OMG this is TMI, but I have had the WORST problem...I am 9 days post-op, and I have been having the most obnoxious, smelly, LOUD gas! It is soooo embarrassing. I have had problems with bloody bowel movements a few days post-op, but now I have pure water diarrhea and this horrible gas-not a good combo!! Has anyone else had this problem? I'm pretty sure it's not gas from the surgery now, just of my own making. Please tell me that this goes away...my daughter called me poopy pants earlier today, and I deserved it! HELP!

Maybe a little TMI, but I finally realized that my miserable fullness was because I had to go potty and couldn't. Got some laxatives and I already feel so much better! Whew! I was getting a little nervous about feeling so icky!

hey guys i was done on the 26th as well. for me it has been a rough 5 days. My surgeon called me yesterday to see how i was doing, well needless to say, i broke down and balled like a baby....(so embarrasing) I told him that i have had a low grade fever since monday, headaches, weak, "accidental diarrhea", (not cool, now i am housebound), and very very nauseated. He told me i am feeling most of this as i had a reaction to the anesthetic. Which i told them i would, they had to pump me up with meds when i was coming to. The doc took me off the antibiotics, told me to get atleast 1.4 ltrs of liquids in, and take phenegren suppositories 2xs day for 3-4 days to help stop the nausea. This should help me get my liquids in. I found it hard to even put Water to my mouth. He also said that the diarrhea is normal as i am only taking in liquids. I wish someone would have told me this before, as i had to throw away a new pair of jammies:faint: Sorry if tmi....but i dont recall reading this before my surgery. My poor husband is frustrated. He told me today that if i dont start feeling better soon he wants them to take this thing outta me.....poor guy, he hates to see me so weak and lethargic. I told him that things will change soon once i can get onto full liquids....lord that cant come soon enough huh guys? Anyhow, enough of the rambling.....stay intouch okay.....we can help each other thru this new adventure. Hugs, Debbie

October 2014 sleevers check in please!
KarenF1972 replied to Jen - a work in progress's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello my little October sleevers! How is everyone doing this gloomy, freezing day? My day is strange. Slept in this morning for starters. When I was laying in bed I started having some discomfort in my tummy - upper abdomen below chest. When I moved it would go away. After I got up, I was still having it a little bit. Now it's gone away for the most part but I have some shoulder pressure and a little discomfort in my back. (Some also at my lower ribs, but I had that from time to time before surgery - I think it's the way I'm sitting because moving around helps it go away.) Not sure if it's a result of being more gassy today, not having a BM for a few days (TMI!!) despite having some ground turkey/hamburger the last few nights for dinner or hitting the treadmill a little harder last night. Ugh! Eating and drinking fine though, so..... Keep on plugging on I guess. What are you all eating for meals these days? -
I spent this week thinking "wth did I do to myself?" I have been in pain, from incisions, gas, throat, and back. When one cleared up a little, the others hit with a vengence. BUT... Tuesday was surgery, and today is Saturday. I am better, can move better with just a little soreness, and not crying at every step or turn. This might be TMI, but try to get the gas out the back end. You shouldn't be able to burp yet, and it needs to get out to make you feel better.

Obsessing about weight loss/ or lack thereof and adjusting after surgery
Tiffany L. posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello all! So I’m 10 days post op, vertical sleeve (5-16-19) and I don’t know how much weight I should be losing per day. I freaked out yesterday because my scale went up. I was 352 to 359 but I really am not eating much. I’m drinking a lot of water but as for pureed foods, I’m having about an oz of ground chicken with a tbsp of chunky salsa (without added sugar) or 1/4 oz of refried beans as a snack plus the protein shakes around my 5th snack. Today I weighed myself and I’m back to 353 but I have to admit, I’m going through it! I’m freaking out afraid that I’m failing at this! I also don’t have much support. My husband doesn’t want to hear my whining, and I can’t talk to my friends because they aren’t obese. I’m feeling all the emotions now. Also, I’m not really feeling full. I just stop eating the moment I feel gassy, and wondering if that’s normal. Not to mention, my BM is odd, I’ve used the bathroom just twice this week. TMI. I’m sorry. I hope I’m not the only one experiencing this! I hope it gets better as the time goes and I do see this weight come off. The pain and the emotional adjusting has to be worth it. Sigh :’(. And yes, I’m feeling a bit depressed. I’m just faking it as much as I can. I’m such a social person and life is around food and it no longer is. Plus mg bday is on Wednesday and I already know I’ll be alone and bored af cause I don’t know what to do without food!!! Sorry for the rant. Thank you for reading! Xoxo -
NJGirl! You rock. I figured that might help. It always does help to errmm...go before a weigh in. I should probably do the same. I'm irregular since my liquid diet, nothing really comes out. (TMI, soo sorry) Maybe I need to try, tomorrow ends my 3 week liquid ordeal. Now for mushies, which I started last night actually on some Talapia fish. OMG! SOOOOOOOO DELISH...

Bellasoo replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hope it’s not tmi, if so, I’m sorry. My surgeon only prescribed me the lovenox because I have a birth control implant so the hormones make me more prone to clotting I had a hysterectomy and have to take estrogen vaginally (sorry, TMI!). I wonder if I will have to do the same? -

I had a hysterectomy and have to take estrogen vaginally (sorry, TMI!). I wonder if I will have to do the same? You can always call your surgeon/surgeon’s office up and ask about it. Nothing wrong with finding out if it’s a possibility. Safety first right? -
Any August Sleevers?
Awjones28 replied to DrewzWife's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Lol!!! I'm home ! Virtually pain free. My 2yo keeps trying to touch my stomach . I have the On-Q pain catheter in the larger incision . I can take it out on Friday or before if I feel so inclined. That's the only thing that really aches besides the gas. TMI , but I can't pass it!! I've been walking every 2 hours but it's a no go. Oh well. Time to finally lay in my own bed and try to get some rest since there was no rest to be had at the hospital. They get you up every 2-4 hours to walk. Plus all the usual poking and prodding. It starts about 6 hours after recovery. I'm excited about this new journey! Yours is coming soon! -
February 2022 Surgery Buddies
fourmonthspreop replied to MeganMyers's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had mine on Feb 14th so I'm 5 weeks and 3 days out. I felt pretty good about fluids and protein until like 2 weeks ago drinking water and feeling pain/restriction, especially when it's room temp. Using a straw and having ice water seems to help me get it down better. I actually gulp in a lot of air when I don't use a straw. Most teams tell you not to, even mine but I feel gas pain in my chest without the straw. I'm doing really well with protein though and get 70-80 grams a day through about 700-800 calories. Rarely do I get to 800 cals though. I noticed on days when I have eaten up to 800 cals I feel nauseated at night so I try to not go over 750. It's a small difference but weird enough I can really feel it. I eat 3 small meals a day, one snack and a protein shake. My dietician has me eat 2 oz of protein every 2 hours during the daytime. I'm taking vitamins well, no hair loss...yet? I do need to take nausea medicine in the morning because maybe 4 times a week I wake up with the instinct to dry heave. I don't know why but I've always felt nauseous in the mornings, even pre op. I find that I can either focus on food or water but not both. When I drink 64 oz of fluids, I eat less and miss my protein goal. When I reach my protein goal, I drink less fluids. I find that balance to be really difficult to deal with and get right. I wonder when that'll be easier? It's also tough with the 2-hour eating rule and then the 10 min before 30 after drinking rule. I'd basically always have to have food or fluid in my mouth all day which isn't realistic for me. I've lost 29 lbs in 5 weeks. I don't really feel it yet/still feel like a big out-of-shape lump LOL. I think I'll feel the weight loss when I hit the 240's. I have my one-month post-op tomorrow with my nurse practitioner. Looking forward to it. P.S. Is anyone still dealing with constipation and ROCK HARD stool? I am on prune juice, Metamucil, colace and occasional senna tea. I go almost every day but it's incredibly forced, usually bleeding occurs or I need to slap on a pair of gloves and take it out (I know TMI I'm sorry ) . I'm going to talk to my team about it tomorrow but I'm so done with it. It also causes me a great deal of nausea. Wondering if anyone else is dealing with this and what you're doing to make it better? -
Dang. haven't been losing for the last few days. Now I know. What a time for the TOM to show up! Grrrrrrrrrrr! The weight usually drops to normal non-water retention a day after. TMI huh?

Wow there are so many I could list but here is a small list. I will spare you all by omitting the TMI ones. Walked a 5K for Breast Cancer Awareness back in Sept. 18 months ago I couldn't walk the Supermarket for 10 minutes! Next year I am planning a team for Relay for Life. Gone from a size 62 jeans to a size 40!! No longer shelling out big money for Big&Tall and Catalog clothing. $17 bucks for jeans at Walmart Ability to go to any restaurants and no longer have to wait for a table when there are booths available Sitting in any chair without the fear of breaking it. Still I have reservations because I sometimes forget I am not as big as I was. Going to a movie theater and worry about whether or not the arm rests are movable Not only did I attend my buddies Wedding this past Summer but I was in it!! AND I was styling in that Tux. Adjusting my seat up in my truck and tilting the steering wheel a bit Arthritis in my knee has not flared up in over a year and I can't remember where I put my Cane Crossing my legs. I think we all said that one and it is amazing the smallest thing could mean so much I no longer get stared at like I am some sort of Circus attraction. -

September 2009 Band Date
Chickychoo replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, today is the 28th, and at 2pm, I was supposed to be among the "banded". Unfortunately, this didn't happen. I started my liquid diet 10 days ago, 2 fridays ago. On the night before I started my liquid diet, i started having horrible horrible horrible diarrhea. I have gallbladder dumping syndrome, so this really wasn't out of the ordinary. Fast forward to six days later, and I still had the horrible diarrhea. Yes, for 6 days straight. But I thought maybe it was because I had not had any solid foods, maybe I wouldn't have a solid poo(TMI, sorry). I had to work twelve hours Saturday at work(xray tech) and it was soo busy, and while at work I was having left lower abd pain(felt like a gas pocket), horrendous back pain(i have bulging disks) and then I felt like my sugar dropped. Well, we were so busy I didn't get to eat lunch and so I figured that my sugar had dropped so I drank some chocolate milk and felt better. Still had back pain and abd pain. Which i thought could be a ovarian cyst or diverticulitis, but i figured diverticulitis was out of the question because i had been on liquids for so long. So while at work Saturday, i threw up. I went home, ran a fever all night. 6am the next morning i felt better so i went to work. While at work, my pain got worse. By 11am I decided to go to emergency room. One CT scan later, and I have an ovarian cyst and diverticulitis. So i get my antibiotics in the ER and I got admitted. Apparently my Potassium levels were really low because they pumped me full of potassium which hurt my IV site like you would not believe. About midnight i was given 2 of dilaudid(i had only been given one in the ER) and not long after I started vomiting. So then my nurse gave me IV Phenergen. Apparently i am a cheap drunk, because i knocked me so hard on my ass that i quite breathing in my sleep repeatedly. My pulse ox dropped int the 30% range and they had a horrible time getting me to stay awake to breath on my own. I apparently gave them quite a scare. Eventually I was given Narcan to reverse the effects of the narcotics and was doing better, but still by pulse ox levels were dropping into the 60% range. Today, I have been receiving IV antibiotics, and still getting potassium. I am having to stay overnight again, and I have no idea when they will do the surgery. I am so upset, I was so excited to have the surgery and now all this BS happens. :tongue2: I am hoping that maybe tomorrow they will tell me I can still have the surgery this week. I am keeping my fingers crossed!!! I hope the others that were supposed to have their surgery today had a better day than me! -
@@rora - I don't go everyday so I didn't worry to much for a couple of days. when I did it was "different" without TMI - loose & very dark. I have since had trouble because of the Iron supplements I was taking. Search "pineapple" here and it explains what it felt like Needless to say RN said to stop iron supplements until I get new BW done in about 3 weeks. I see doctor for 2nd f/u appointment on 9/8. She said if my iron is low we will address it then. I still have some issues but I add miralax to my drink or yogurt about every day (sometimes I forget) and I haven't had "pineapple" issues.

@@Beni so you know! I didn't want to go to the er! I suffered recovering from my c section and that horrible pain. Those percs messed me up like I felt it in my gut and going down I was miserable, like how do you feel like pooping but its just stuck there? My god, I think I took more than 15 laxatives. When it came out, there was a force I felt it all come out, I even screamed I didn't know that could be possible, idk how my intestines didn't pop. Geez I even took pictures because I would of made the book of world records! Idk how it came out it was like a basketball. I hope I poop soon because I really am scared of going through that again. Okay I'm done with the tmi, sorry guys.

I everyone, I have not dropped of the face of the the earth. Just have been super busy volunteering at the Hospital Ladies Board yearly Rummage sale. It is a huge deal and 100,000s of dollars are raised. We expect 20,000 from my department alone. We have the designer goods and my on my I am exhausted every night. Today was ruff I had a Premier vanilla shake for lunch and it did not agree with me. Guess who had to use a port a potty 5 times. Fortunately only volunteers had used it and it was very clean but still, yuck. There's like 20 potties I had to play guess what's behind the door for a good one. I wish I could have gone home but I wouldn't have made it. Sorry for the TMI but has anyone had this issue with these shakes. I am now worried sick I picked up a stomach virus. What if I don't get better fast enough and my surgery is cancelled. Jeez, why is this happening? Last week I went to Cheesecake Factory (last meal befor 2 week diet) and had something that caused some of the worst heartburn I have had in years. Had to call the doctor who placed me pronto on Protonix ( a stronger Prilosec like med). Is there a black cloud over me? After tomorrow, I am only going out of the house for the absolute essential stuff. HIBERNATION

Whos in September? We need some September buddies!
LoryLosesXS replied to janie2024's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I cheated and ate a Babybel cheese. 9g protein and 70 cals. I let it melt in my mouth before I swallowed it. So far no issues. The fact that I got to bite into something and chew it made me feel a little better. I've only consumed 400 cals today. I'm going to try some applesauce too. It will help so I don't get constipated from the cheese. TMI I know.
