I can't speak for the rest on this board, but I didn't take any precautionary measures before surgery on the skin issue. But I do think you have a good approach with plans of lifting weights. It may not be the only factor, but I think it's probably the biggest factor in not having any loose skin issues for myself. If you haven't lifted before, be patient, learn good form/technique and gradually build up.....I think you'll be glad you did. Good luck and I wish you the best!

Did you really want to do "IT"?
kimaly replied to HAL380's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would have to say #2 it wasn't my first choice of weight loss but after I failed on all other diets and didn't stick to the so called lifestyle change that I tried many times I did my research and made the best decision ever and got my band. With the assistants of the band it has made it possible for me to stick with it. I wish I had done it sooner. -
This is my first blog, so glad I found this place. I am so glad to have freedom again. I love to ride rides like at 6 flags and Disney world. I have not been able to do this in years and years. I cant wait! Im 59yrs old and I know I will be able to see my grandchildren grow up and be a active part of their lives. I had gastric sleeve surgery on May 13,2013. When I started this journey I weighed 302. I lost 60 pounds before surgery. Today is June 22 and I have lost a total of 65 p. I was discouraged at first but I realized I was not eating enough protein or liquid. When I increased this the weight started coming off. I don't think I am eating enough. When I eat chicken I get full very quickly. I still drink a protein drink for breakfast and a protein bar around 12 noon. This gives me 50 grams of protein. I use fitness pal to help keep track of me carbs and protein. I have went from a size mens 4x t-shirt and now I am almost in a 2x and have went down 3 sizes in pants. I have to go shopping very soon. Im still tired a lot, I have arthritis in my knees. It is better but it hinders my exercising. I sit and do sitting exercise and standing without moving my knees to much. The pool is the best.

What is the ultimate goal?
vlp1968 replied to MrMom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, there are foods I plan to never introduce back into my diet. They include things such as desserts, fried foods, fast food. I have other addiction issues, and consider food one of them. I am simply not able to do things in moderation. I am almost at goal, I hope this plan works for me in the long run. I've lost the weight before but never kept it off for long. -
Welcome! You are already well on your way! I've been overweight my whole life too. I hope the rest of your pre-approval process goes smoothly. I was sleeved on 2/28/13 so I'm just a couple of months post-op. it boggles my mind sometimes that I actually had the surgery cuz I'm such a chicken about any kind of surgery. But I felt so strongly that this was the right thing for me to do. I want to be freed from my excess weight and it's happening! I kinda freaks me out! LOL! Best of luck to you! pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4

hey there is my buddy Dee:w00t:! i am feeling much better today (sat). are you getting excited? how did you do on the liquid diet? yes my port and incision pain was because i was not that big when i started i was 231lbs. on the day of surgery i was 209lbs. my dr said that because i had loss so much weight he had to do a lot of tugging and pulling. to give you an idea of how small i was, all of my incisions are high up right under my rib cage, that part of my stomache was kinda flat, you could feel my ribs. then you also have concider my height too (i am short) that is why they say everone's pain experience is different. different body types and sizes. it kinda got on my nerves, but all my nurses kept saying that i was so small, and why am i having the surgery. forget all the medical problems i have right? then i had to explain that i worked hard as hell to lose the 22 lbs prior to surgery. But Dee, i feel a lot better today, each day getts better. -
I had my surgery on 8/8. went home on 8/9. I went back to work Friday 8/12/11 for a half day. then back full time on Monday 8/15/11. pretty tired, but I walk the stairs at work each day to the 5th floor and walk with my husband or kids each night. when I got my staples out on the 16th. I had lost 14 pounds since 8/4. I have not weighted myself again, though. I removed all the scales from my house years ago. I suppose I will go buy one tonight. I have been tracking all my food and exercising using the my fitness pal app. it yells at me in red telling me I am eating to few calories..... I am averaging 250 a day. protien drinks make me so sick. I try to drink 2 or 3 K2O, Protein waters a day and have managed to choke down greek yogurt each morning. I found little cans of chicken by swanson 3.5 oz . so I have that for lunch along with a sugar free Jello. For dinners most days I have Soup. 1/4 cup of french onion or tomato or squash. then I have a 1/4 cup a bit later of one of the NAKED fruit smoothie drinks, then I try to get a snack in before bed. for the last couple of nights I have been eating a tablespoon of cashew butter. (yummy). Finally went to the pool yesterday. felt so good just to float in the Water. I tried a bit of swimming but was feeling so tired that I only lasted 1 lap of the pool. Lately I feel SO tired, like I could fall asleep at my desk or in the middle of a movie or even church. I added B12 and Biotin to my morning suppliments. I hope that helps. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is anyone else feeling so tired? I also still have sharp pains in my largest incision site. I find myself holding that part of my abdomnin... odd. Where is everyone else? Thanks, Mel

Thanks for the replies everyone.....I got on the scale and I think I lost a couple of pounds not sure....it all depends on the scale I use. But I did add some oatmeal to my diet this morning and I have to tell I sure feel much better.....I felt so tired I didn't have energy for nothing. This sure is a person to person thing...meaning we are all so different in how we lose our weight. I often wonder if it came from the starving I did in my younger day...almost anorexic. Sure nice to share our experiences...thanks again rpm2010

I didn't start working out until a few months after my surgery. There is a normal "down feeling" or "blues" that comes from being under anesthesia. Honestly, I think I was really going through grief and loss issues regarding my loss of the relationship I once had with food. Me and food still had a thing, but it had changed and it just wasn't the same....not being able to do emotional eating because the "go to" foods I used to eat gave me dumping syndrome or I couldnt digest. I had no motivation either until I went to my first post-op fill appointment and sat in the waiting room talking to other WLS patients. It was motivating to hear about their successes. Oh and I also read success stories on here and watched videos that lap-banders posted on youtube. It helped to see others losing weight and I told myself that since I went through the surgery i was not going to make it be for nothing. I started out just taking 2 to 3 mile walks with my IPod, listening to music that really got me pumped up and then I started working out with a friend so that we could motivate eachother. Have faith that this lifestyle change is going to work if you work it. You will find your motivation somewhere inside of you....if you didn't want to ultimately lose the weight, you wouldnt have had the surgery. So, maybe you just need time or that certain something to click and ignite your motivation.

I remember asking myself this alot, what will I look like when I lose the weight, what will a good weight be for me, how can I expect my clothes to fit, etc. I found awhile ago, a really great and fun website: http://www.mybodygallery.com/ it is just like it sounds — a searchable database of (mostly anonymous) photographs of women, tagged with their self-described height, weight, body shape, and dress sizes. "A recent study found that 95% of non-eating disordered women overestimate the size of their hips by 16% and their waists by 25%, yet the same women were able to correctly estimate the width of a box," explain the founders. "In a world full of images of how we 'should' look it can get difficult to tell how we DO look." I think it's a rally good site to visit along this journey as well. I have been losing so much weight so fast, I still feel much bigger than I actually am, so seeing other people, the same height and general shape as me at the same weight is a really good way for me to guage what I actually look like. It's also excited to check out smaller weights and guestimate what I will look like when I'm done plus a few extra rolls of skin... but you get the point! Try it!

Hello all, I am new to the site. I have just begun my journey to being banded. The problem i am having is i have to loose 20 lbs before i can even get insurance approval. I know my insurance covers this. I have an apt on June 25th to meet with the dietician again and support group. I was hoping to at least be at the halfway mark. Then July 23 is my psych eval and final appt with my surgeon. If i have not lost the weight i will have to wait until i do to be schedule or even info sent to insurance for apprval. I was given a liver reduction diet. It reminds me alot of the Atkins. But i am not seeing the weight come off. Any suggestions on how i can speed up this process of loosing the 20 lbs? I really want to be able to set a date in July. Thank you for all your suggestions. Traice in Indiana

buzz....you WILL need a fill. Without a fill you might as well not have a band in. What you have now is a band inserted in your body but it hasn't been rendered operational (or turned on) yet. You may not feel hunger right now because you still have swelling from the surgery. But when that is gone down and healed, you will feel just like you did pre-band. So, yes, you will need a fill. You will probably need a few of them to get to where you need to be for proper restriction. And as you lose weight around your belly the band will loosen and it will need to be tightened again.

Diabetics/hbp Meds On The Pre-Op Diet
Pookeyism replied to TinaMari's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was a controlled diabetic for 4 years prior to surgery, and had dropped almost 40 lbs before surgery, so we (endo, surgeon and me) decided to take me totally off my injection 3 days before and stop by metformin the night before. I have never took either since, and rarely go out of 70-120 range (I dip low a bit, however). The doctor said part of it was my bone/muscle density, and that my weight was centered in my abdomen, and I had lost alot ot the "center line". I had fought to keep my a1c below 6.2 and it was usually in the 5's, so all of this contributed, I think. I am in complete remission, per my doctor's explination, because I am not just under control on a real low carb diet - I can eat a regular amount of carbs and be ok (ugh - but really don't like the way the carbs makes my tummy feel). If you do not have an actual endocrinologist (sp?) you may want to gather your records and see a good one. -
Kese, Most of the docs in Mexico will band you as long as you understand with your BMI being lower, the weight will come off slower. At least that is what my doc says. I went to Dr. Rodriguez in Acuna Mexico. It is a couple of hours west of San Antonio, Texas. The patient coordinator picked me up at the airport and took me across the border to the hospital. It was a great experience and only cost me $7300. I live near Dallas so I flew to San Antonio. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. They treated me very nice there.

How long is the process?
Instyle98 replied to hanablu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It will greatly depend on what you insurance requires. Mine required a 4 month waiting period during which I had to have 2 nutritional consults, a psych eval, records showing a minimum of a 2 year history of obesity, and a history of previous attempts at weight loss. Then I had to complete the requirements of the surgery center/surgeon - lab work, PFT, ECG, medical clearance from my cardiologist, and 2 week pre-op diet. The time went by faster than I thought it would. They were ready to do the surgery before I was! -
How long is the process?
winkie80 replied to hanablu's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every insurance policy is written differently. You will need to contact them to see if you have coverage and what their requirements are to be approved. I'm in the process right now and they require a 3 month medically monitored weight loss, a psych eval, 2 years of medically noted weight and an appointment with a nutritionist. My surgeons office takes it a step further and requires a 10% of access weight loss (for me this is 19lbs), a sleep study, a letter of support from PCP and to attend a support group meeting. All in all I'm looking at a total of 4 to 5 months before I am cleared for sugery. -
Does anyone have a maintenance plan for when they reach their goal? Or are there any vets out there who have kept the weight off for 1…2…3 years or longer? If so how did you transition and from losing to just maintaining.

September 6Th Sleevers, Where Are You?!?
Sunshine30 posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
My surgery was on September 6th, weighing in at 245. Almost 9 weeks out, and I'm weighting in at 211.4. So... I'm at about 34 pounds lost in two months. I've had stalls, sickness, again and again... Just wondering how my fellow September sleevers were doing with their weight loss? Am I where I should be, I think?
