  1. 8000 steps is pretty high for being just a few days out of surgery. Your body needs to rest and heal. It's been several years since I had surgery, but I think I mostly walked around my house a little the first three or four days, then did a jaunt around the block every day for a few days after that. It's good to be up and moving, but don't push yourself too much - again, your body needs to heal. as far as poop, it often takes a good week for the first one (there's not much in there yet), and the first one tends to be a doozy. A lot of us start taking stool softeners a couple of days ahead of it to prepare for it. After that, a minority of people experience occasional diarrhea, but most experience constipation, often chronic (it's due to the high protein diet plus the iron and calcium (if you're taking those). I still take a capful of Miralax every morning to keep on top of it. watch out for reflux - I'm a little surprised your surgeon recommended VSG since that's been known to make GERD worse, but that's not the case for everyone. But just keep tabs on it and manage it if it doesn't resolve or gets worse (a minority get it so badly they end up getting a revision to RNY, but for most, it can be managed with PPIs). You just don't want that to get out of control - but again, you may not have issues with it. Some people have said theirs even got better after surgery, so you never know.. I haven't seen many posts about hiccups, so I don't know how common that is, but it doesn't surprise my since your stomach's been sliced and diced. And the painful transitions (when you go from lying down to standing up, or whatever) - yep, that's very common. That's really the only time I had pain. It felt like I'd just done about 1000 crunches. that went away after a week or so, I think. sounds like things are going well over all, though. Welcome to the losers' bench!

    My Gastric Sleeve Journey

I wanted to do a bit of an update, frustrating as it is... My final doctors appointment was on May 3rd and at this particular appointment, I finished by meeting with the office manager and hearing what the next steps would be. She told me that it could take up to a month for insurance to approve the surgery and that I'd be hearing from them. All of the research that I've done online, all of the videos that I've watched of other people's journey's all pretty much showed that it's usually less than 10 days. I'm sure that's not true for everyone, but that's what I've seen. I got a notice from a debt collector last week saying that one of my appointments hadn't been covered by my insurance, so I called my doctors office to see what was going on with that and they apologized for a billing error. I asked while I had them on the phone if they had heard anything back from insurance yet about my surgery and she got kinda quiet for a second, they said she wasn't sure if they had everything that they needed to submit my file to insurance, then she says "oh yeah, we have everything we need." We're probably going to send it today (this was on Friday) or Monday. Talk about irritated, it's been almost three weeks since my last appointment! Oh well, hopefully everything goes a little smoother from here on out.
  3. Wow, 8,000 steps 3 days post op is quite intense! Definitely allow your body to heal a bit more. We typically ALL feel tired & weak after the surgery & from how little calories were consuming, adding that many steps is only amplifying that feeling. Especially if you're still feeling that soreness. Be safe!! 💜 Glad each day is getting better & better

    Any April Surgery Dates?

My surgery was April 3rd and for 5 weeks I was only sick once during week one. Everything was so good and I've had same thoughts that I've read some others here express.... did I even get the surgery? I feel no restriction. No nausea. No hunger. No problems. Too good to be true. Week five I was put on normal/rest of life food plan. I'm now feeling hard restriction. Which is ok except for the nausea. That's hard to deal with. I went back to soft foods for a bit and got sick again today with a breakfast I've had more times than I can count. 1 soft scrambled egg and 1/4 C of cooked spinach. The uncertainty of what's doable to eat and what isn't every day is starting to stress me. I understand it's trial and error at this point but I'm almost afraid to eat now. Next step...I might need to go back to full liquid if need be. Hopefully this won't hinder my progress. I figure how can it hurt to allow more healing time for my tummy?
  5. A little about me. 45-year-old, male. Fought my weight my entire adult life. Chronic IBS. GERD. Heart attack in 2016. Heart disease. Diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea in 2022. Fatty liver disease. Metabolic syndrome. Diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos - Hypermobility Type in 1997. Currently have chronic pain in both shoulders and both hips, especially when sleeping. This is due to the EDS. I have SLAP tears in both shoulders as well as partial rotator cuff tears, and frozen shoulder on the right side. Married. Twin 13-year-olds. Quality of life really hit bottom. I decided to take control of my life. I had my first appointment with the Dr back in November. Just had VSG on May 18th. Severe gas pains for about the first 5 hours after surgery. Like really bad. Gave me dilaudid to help with the pain, and it did knock the edge off. I was able to get up and walk, drink a little, and pee. Let me go home about 6.5 hours in recovery. The first nights sleep was brutal. THE HICCUPS! Why did no one tell me about the hiccups?! I was able to wear my apnea mask just fine, but every time I got up to pee (about 5 times total), the hiccups would start almost immediately and last for 30 minutes or more. I was shaking the bed and keeping the wife awake, they were so bad. Also had some mild reflux with a little bit of the foamies (I got those before the surgery when the reflux would flare). 1st day after surgery, much better. Very few hiccups. No nausea. Got all of my fluids and protein in. Even walked about 8000 steps (I would've done anything to make sure the gas pain didn't return). Now I'm on the third full day after surgery, and each day has been better than the last. Still tired. Off pain meds for the entire day today. I can't stomach the clear protein, so I'm drinking full (creamy) protein diluted 50/50 with water. No issues so far. I think I have overdone it with walking too much too soon, because I feel really tired and weak. I'm going to cut the walking down to 5000 steps and see if that helps. My ABS are pretty sore, especially immediately after sitting/laying. They tighten up pretty quick. Still a long road ahead, with 1-2 shoulder surgeries later this year. And I know there's still a long road ahead with my weight loss journey. I appreciate everyone's candidness describing their issues (poop, slime/foamies, etc). I like to know what to expect. No regrets.

    May 2023 surgeries

As far as getting liquids in, I'm finding it harder now that I'm in puree stage. For each meal I have to wait 30 minutes before and after, as well as the 30ish minutes it takes me to eat. So for 3 meals I'm losing 4.5 hours of drinking time. I drink as fast as I can without overdoing it, but I still seem to come up short a lot.

    TORe Gastric Revision Procedure

@clariceyIt took me about 3-4 weeks to feel normal again. You’ll start seeing results soon, if not already. Best of luck!
  8. Hi Lolavolcan. I started my liquid diet last Thursday. Its not too bad but there are the odd moments when it can feel quite challenging. My liquid diet is only for 2 weeks - I can see how 4 weeks can seem like a huge mountain to climb. Staying focused can be hard. I try to stay focused by listening to music I like to dance or which motivates me. I look at the clothes i will be able to wear and also like to list the things that I aim to do. I have started swimming now which gives a boost to the mood and I try to busy myself. Take one day at a time honey - that also helps because one day feels more manageable. Its 4 weeks out if the rest of your life - you are on your way to a really fabulous chapter. Come on girl - you can do it Lola 😊

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

My surgery date is scheduled for June 21st. My doctor requires a 4 week, all liquid diet before surgery. I started today but am worried I’m gonna fail.
  11. My program allowed carbs after 3 months! Whole grain carbs, healthy carbs, etc. I've learned to love Keto bread products as they're usually low cal, low carb & can be a solid substitute! You 100% don't need to be keto to get them, they're just a really good compromise if you want to go that route. I even make pizza with keto crust (I use Joseph's Brand Pita Bread & Lavash Bread for it) It's good to have around But I've also found that I crave breads less in general. I don't -need- a carb to be apart of every meal anymore bc all that protein keeps me full & satisfied. Maybe that can happen for you too
  12. I agree, you wont need much. I took my own toiletries & changed into my own pjs - made me feel better. I was glad I threw in extra pjs & knickers though (you can experience very sudden diarrhoea - unpleasant). Different surgeons will have different advice & restrictions in regards to activity post surgery & when you can begin more strenuous activity, usually everyone is told to walk - gentle slow walks as you’re able (a couple of short walks every day even just around your home your yard is a good place to begin). Remember you will have restrictions on how much you can carry (lift, pull, etc.) in the first couple of weeks while you are healing. Check with them before embarking on an exercise program. Oh, those surgical gowns can be thin too. I’ll never forget the man wearing his gown sunning himself in front of the windows in the ward lounge area without a care in the world. The sun was highlighting everything under the gown & believe me when I say he was only wearing his hospital gown. 😱. all the best.

    6 Days Post-Op

it's not uncommon to not lose weight the first week because most people actually GAIN weight from the IV fluids they give you in the hospital (some people "gain" as much as 10 lbs - although it's not a true gain, it's just water). also, it often takes a week for your first BM. There's not much in there...
  15. Hello. I’m brand new on my weight loss journey. I’m almost 2 weeks post op. My goals after surgery are to lose weight and to be in a healthy BMI. I am not going for any particular weight number goals or anything like that, I just want to be able and active for my kiddos. I’m having a ton of fear about my forever diet. I feel like I still want food to be a part of my life and I want to be able to eat food without being concerned about weight. Initially I was under the impression that I would be able to eat foods I enjoy, but just in moderation. Upon learning more I’m seeing that low carb diets are basically mandatory from here on. Is there a way I can deficit increased exercise and activity level for more carbs in the future? I am determined to make the gym a large part of my routine and I want to exercise more and have less restrictions as far as what I eat. Is this possible as a Bariatric patient? Are things done to me now that would make this type of lifestyle goal not possible? I’ve had the Sleeve and a Modified Duodenal Switch or Sadi-S. I may be extremely naive and what I think I want now could change in the future, but that’s my goals.

Surgery Shaming Should Be A Thing…

I had my first meeting with the psychologist this week. I brought this up. She had a good suggestion which I like - "'I'm working hard at improving my health."

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

Hi So my own surgery date has been confirmed as Sunday 18 June with a 2 day stay in hospital. I am having the sleeve done. I have a 10 day high protein, high veg diet to complete from 7 June to 17 and then fasting from 9pm the night before. Have not said it to people that I am doing this bar 2. Anyone any advice about the time off? I am self employed and don't want to take a huge amount of time off. I have kept a few days free but want to keep myself open to working as well. Not nervous about getting the surgery done. Honestly, that wouldn't bother me but a little nervous about going home from the surgery. Should I just expect to lie on the settee for a few days and watch bad movies? The team were not helpful in this regard. They just keep telling me everyone is different and it is hard to know. After the surgery I have a 7 day liquid diet to do followed by a one week of mashed foods like potato or scrambled eggs. Then back to regular food but small portions. I have multi vitamins for 2 years. Nice to find this resource.
  19. I hope this is the right place to post this question! I have Molina Medicaid Apple Health insurance. Two weeks ago I brought up bariatric surgery to my doctor. I even brought a copy of the Molina Medicaid Apple Health pre-surgical assessment form that she is supposed to fill out and fax. She is 100% on board with me having this surgery from what I can tell, so that isn’t the issue. And she seems really nice, I only just started seeing her. On Monday I sent her a message asking if she had sent in the form and asking what happens when they approve/deny it and she responded that she hadn’t yet. After a few misunderstandings of the actual criteria Molina has for surgery, I sent her a message that Molina sent me when I asked them directly. I qualify based just on my BMI according to what they told me. She said that helped and she would send the form the following day. Great! Except now she’s saying she was told by the dietitian at the clinic that it isn’t her who sends the form in, it’s the dietitian. At this clinic, they like to have all of the appointments set up BEFORE sending in that form for approval since stage 2 starts immediately upon approval. I sent her the PDF from Molina that outlines the stages and that it says my PCP has to send it before which she agreed made sense but she doesn’t want to go against what the clinic does. She also said she’s never been through this process before, so I guess I’m her first patient to want this? That isn’t right, is it? The dietitian can’t fax that form, can they? At my appointment two weeks ago my doctor sent in a referral for the dietitian just so I could get on the books since we don’t know how long this process will take and I scheduled an appointment for next month knowing I might have to reschedule. But now my doctor is basically saying the form won’t be sent until I go to that appointment… but why would I go to that appointment if it won’t count? Should I find a new doctor? Or should I trust they know how to do things? Should I call Molina and ask? I’m a nervous person in general and this isn’t helping. 😂 I just don’t want this to get messed up! Sorry for the long post.

    Pysch and Nutrionist CLEARED

One of the last things I was required to do before surgery was a blood draw from my GP to test for nicotine etc.. If you have gotten all your medical clearances as well then I can't see it being much longer for them to submit everything to insurance. I was approved in a week's time and surgery 2 weeks after that. I had fun with the psychiatrist. Last time I saw her and she told me I was cleared, I asked,,, "So you're telling me I'm normal and not crazy?" She laughed and said, " You're definitely not crazy. Normal is questionable. " I'm glad she got my sense of humor. LOL

Congrats on your surgery. Are you weighing yourself daily? They pump you up with gas and liquids therefore the scale isn’t really accurate the first week. Good luck on your journey and try to stay off the scale until your first follow up appointment with your dr?

    6 Days Post-Op

I had my surgery Monday the 15th, I feel fine other than soreness at the incision sites. I have been following the food plan, eating soft, mushy proteins and liquids yet I have only lost 1 pound this week which is sort of discouraging. I have not had a bowel movement since the morning before surgery and that's also making me nervous. Anyone else have these issues?
  23. Congratulations!!!! I just hit and exceeded my goal of 185lbs. As someone who’s been morbidly obese for most of his adult life I never imagined I could ever hit the mythical normal bmi. Guess what, this week my bmi is officially 24.9 NORMAL…woohoo 👍
  24. after years of being "class 3 obese", I was ECSTATIC when I hit the point I was merely "overweight"!

    Food aversion

It could be just your fussy sensitive tummy. Many of us experience temporary changes to our taste buds &/or sense of smell. For some certain textures upset them. I was so excited when I was able to eat vegetables again but nope my tummy said no to some of my favourites. But it was only temporary. At best it’s just a ‘this is yucky’ reaction. At worst it may cause you to vomit. And yes certain artificial sweeteners (usually the alcohol ones) can cause digestive distress - bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea, etc. I actually had a reverse experience. Before surgery, I often found smoked salmon too rich & strongly flavoured. After surgery I surprisingly could eat it (smear of cream cheese wrapped around a wedge of cucumber - yum). But a few weeks later - nope awful & still avoid it. Give your tummy time to relearn flavours, smells, textures, etc. This is often a great time to try different foods or foods you fed isn’t enjoy in the past. Avoid those foods that upset you fur a couple of weeks & then try again.
