2 months out, fluid issues?
(Deleted through replacement replied to (Deleted through replacement's topic in Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty Forum
After thinking a long time, I believe the issue is this: I came off a liquid diet, and then two weeks later I had fully reintroduced solids (which was around the time this happened). I also therefore was able to put some carbs in, so I came off ketosis. (The protein drinks I was on had ~no carbs.) Also, I've been eating probably a bit more salt than I should. From previous experience, keto makes me lose about 10 lbs of glycogen weight in the starting "whoosh." 10 lbs + solid food in various parts of digestion + some water retention from salt = 15-20 lbs depending on the water retention. So it's probable that I just haven't lost nearly as much actual fat as I think I have, which is extremely depressing, but at least there's an explanation. That said, I'm about 4 inches off both my waist and my hips, so clearly something happened. Though given my consistent weight for the past 2 weeks or so, I'm probably stalled right now. I did just start up a 3x/week strenuous weightlifting program, so hopefully that puts a dent in it. My doctor is horrible at getting back to me on any kind of schedule, so I had to attack this myself. The awful part is that 240 lbs is my normal weight pre-pandemic. All that work to return to the status quo. -
Still feeling nauseous
Arabesque replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Two years out & yep I do. Probably more I want to lie down versus nausea now often coupled with my restriction kicking in. It can happen when I go out to eat & eat a little too quickly or if I’m not fully hydrated. Sometimes it’s when what I’m eating isn’t sitting well. Had lunch with a fellow sleever this week & after lunch we both groaned & said I need to lie down. Quite funny actually. We both had an all day keto breakfast. I had some bacon for the first time in ages & I think it set me off. She said the last bite did her in. -
Cleaning up diet Pre Surgery
lizonaplane replied to DareMightyThings's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am still doing the nutrition classes and jumping through insurance hoops (the classes are a joke!). I have cut out diet soda/carbonation, significantly reduced carbs (not keto, just reduced carbs), counting calories (about 1400 a day), increased exercise, cut sweets dramatically, and I'm trying to eat more slowly and not drink 30 minutes after meals. I'm doing well with everything except eating slowly. I have lost 32 lbs in 4 months and I find I'm less hungry and don't crave sweets now that I'm eating fewer carbs and sweets. I used to be addicted to diet soda but I tried one a month ago and it didn't even taste good. Fruit and vegetables were always something I ate plenty of but now they taste even better! I'm eating more protein and I think that helps me stay more full. I figure any weight I lose now is weight I don't have to lose after surgery. And if I get used to living the lifestyle now, it will be much better than throwing "food funerals"! -
Food Before and After Photos
myfanwymoi replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The amount I can eat (four years out) varies hugely. I fast 22/24 three days a week and 16/8 or 18/6 the other four days and I’m v low carb/Keto and absolutely no damn sugar at all! Sugar been gone about six weeks this time. Lowest weight 8 stone 2, highest 10 stone 10 about 6 weeks ago! Dropped 12lbs so now 9 stone 12 (137llbs) feel so good! Sugar is the devil for me! food pics are air fried thighs and aubergine/courgette mix and a chaffles (pancake made from egg and cheese) with fried pek (Keto friendly chopped pork) and mushroom and a slice of emmenthal. I have a ninja foodi 9 in one - pressure, air, steam, bake, sauté, grill etc! And I use it most days. In love with ma foodi! -

Any April 2021 surgeries?!
WanderingHeart replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Keto flu is usually shortly after you start the keto diet, was 3 days into pre-op for me. Is it the actual flu? -
Has anyone had very bad chills upon waking up in the middle of the night. Had a whole body aches yesterday afternoon then woke up in the middle of the night just now with major chills. Not sure if this could be keto flu or something else. Anyone have any similar symptoms

Any March Surgeries?
canadianpopcycle replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Honestly...I don't understand why there is no standardization with this surgery. Between calorie 'limits' to keto, some/no carbs, etc etc its really ridiculous. Not sure if this helps you: My surgery was March 29...so I just started my 8th week since surgery. My 'program' after surgery: 2 weeks of Full Fluids, 3rd week puree and soft foods and 4th week everything else. There are no calorie 'goals', as they want you to get as much nutrition as you can in..but they don't want you to be restricting food. My protein goal is 80 - 107g. During the full fluids phase I was getting about 550 calories a day. Puree I was getting about 900 calories. Regular foods until now are between 950 and 1100 ish depending what I am eating. I walk everyday (weather permitting) about 25 min. I'd like to get to the gym, but those are closed currently here. My weigh ins are: Surgery Day March 29: 315.6 April 5: 308.8 (-6.8) April 12: 302.6 (-6.2) April 19: 301.8 (-0.8) April 26: 299.2 (-2.6) May 3: 296.6 (-2.6) May 10: 294.0 (-2.6) May 17: 290.8 (-3.2) Total since surgery: 24.8 lbs -
What was your tipping point?
SummerTimeGirl replied to 3tallwomen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello and welcome!!!!!!! Have been actively trying to lose weight for the last decade with the help of my primary doc and endocrinoligist (who my primary doc sent me to after he and I tried just about everything for me to lose weight and nothing was working). Anyway, my endocrinolgist finally figured out I had Insulin Resistance (put me on metformin for that) plus PCOS and of the two make it extremely hard to lose. You constantly, actively always need to be trying to lose otherwise it seems you just steadily gain. Over the years both docs had me log food, log the gym attendance, try medication, various diets, etc. Nothing worked. I think the most I ever lost was 30-40 lbs and that was on Keto but then I slacked and eventually and fell back into bad habits and like a year later, gained almost all of it back again. The 40lb loss wasn't enough anyway, as I'm over 300lbs and have been for over a decade. I also have high BP, crap cholesterol, and was teetering on the border of becoming a type 2 diabetic. Sadly, during the pre testing phase for weight loss surgery we found that I am now indeed type 2. Something I wanted to avoid and was hoping to not get before surgery. So here we are, surgery is 2 days away and I'm hoping like hell it helps me lower my BP and ditch the type 2 and improve my cholesterol. -
My wife and I also had surgery at the end of last year. What we tend to do is not keep things in the house that would take us off plan too far. Even with cookies or chips, we tend to go more for the protein chips or keto cookies (Highkey cookies are really good) to try to have a slightly healthier option. We also tend to purchase low/no sugar chocolate and only eat a small amount when we do. I also tend to have healthier dessert yogurt "Dannon light and fit" and low sugar protein bars such as fitcrunch bars that are delicious but fairly close to plan. By doing this I am still able to have a treat but not over indulge. The closer to plan I can keep my treats, the better the long term results I feel will happen.
-
For me it's bread, cake, and similar items. I can't keep that stuff in the house. I will occasionally let myself have an indulgence but I enjoy the treat and then that's it. What I don't eat gets given or thrown away and I get right back on plan. And I don't indulge often. Even keto bread-like products will kick off cravings for me. People can advise but we are each the only one who lives in our particular body. Trying to regularly eat bread "in moderation" would be a fast-track to regaining all the weight I've lost.

Lying about not getting surgery is awful
Dinah55 replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I struggled with the tell or don't tell issue, and finally decided to be honest with family and friends. I didn't want the stress of making up some "I'm doing keto" story or something like that. And after a lot of thought, I decided that I really don't give a flyin' flip what anybody thinks about my surgery. If they don't like it, I couldn't care less. And as it turns out, I haven't gotten any negative reactions. People have really been supportive. If they disapprove, they haven't told me to my face, so I at least haven't had to listen to negative garbage. But to each his own. I can totally understand wanting to keep it under wraps. When I was younger, I probably wouldn't have been so open about it, but I'm now at an age where I don't give a hoot what anybody thinks about me! 😉 -
Lying about not getting surgery is awful
canadianpopcycle replied to GinormousReislin's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Well...here goes... My husband knows....and a coworker (inadvertently) because they saw me in the hospital. I do not plan on telling anyone else currently. Perhaps in the future I will be more open about it. So the question becomes why.... A small preamble: Diet, obesity, food, exercise etc has been a really big interest of mine for years. I have spent so much time researching so many things when it comes to this topic. I feel I am reasonably well versed in this topic. The problem is...most people are not. Many people are still knee deep in the billion dollar diet industry that will argue about Keto, CICO, Southbeach, Atkins etc etc. Many people also believe that you can control your own weight...and if you are over the amount you should weigh, it is your fault. Many people don't think about the factories that make "food". Many people don't think about so many things that so many people deal with. Lots of people think having surgery is cheating. My obesity is still very much tangled up in emotionally abusive things from childhood. The very last thing that I want to do is have a conversation about that with people I don't know, or only know professionally. This has been a long hard road to get here, but I don't need to explain myself to anyone. Did it occur to you that maybe people shouldn't be commenting on people's bodies? Why would it be my place to ask someone about their weight? There are going to be many people that don't agree with surgery for whatever reason....frankly, it's not my job to enlighten people on what they should do with their lives. If someone wants to know the 'secret', then they can do the research and figure out what is best for them and their health issues. I hate to tell you this....but the surgery stigma is alive because of the rhetoric of the billion dollar diet industry is alive and well in most people. The stigma isn't alive because a few people 'lied' about having surgery. I also really hate the explanation: If you needed surgery because you broke your leg, you wouldn't be hiding that from anyone! But really...medical ailments and treatments can be embarrassing and private or shameful. If I needed a colostomy bag, I wouldn't put out a newsletter about it. Jesus. -
Pizza crust almond flour
Highly_Undermedicated replied to trecia gordon's topic in Food and Nutrition
I purchase ready made Cauliflower crust in the freezer section at Publix. 2 months ago they had one brand overstock marked down from $8 to $1.99! So we purchased 10 of them. Removed them from their boxes (they were plastic wrapped too) and stored in deep freezer. Took up less space without the boxes. But we used them as "pita"/flatbread in greek nachos, pizza crust, breadsticks, crackers. So delicious. We also make Fathead keto dough. Its so simple and yummy. You can use it for breadsticks, pita alternative and a not so crispy cracker too. But it still works. https://www.wholesomeyum.com/recipes/fathead-pizza-crust-low-carb-keto-gluten-free-nut-free/ -
May Surgeries - check in!
HealthyMe67 replied to ChunkyCali's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello. I had my gastric sleeve done on April 30. I did have to do the liquid diet for 2 weeks prior. I have done keto in the past and have learned that eliminating carbohydrates helps to lower the hunger pangs. I came off all carbs about 6 days prior to going on the liquid diet, I thought it really helped to come off them first, then eliminate the solid foods later. I was also concerned about the lack of energy at work. I am on my feet, active, for ten hours a day. This first few days were the toughest, but it wasn't that bad after that. It was very important to drink the shakes before I got really hungry. Drink them at a regimented time to hold the hunger at bay. It really was not as bad as I thought it would be.......Good Luck! -
So I was watching these videos by one of the WLS Surgeons and he isn't pro-sweeterners! He thinks it can also spike Insulin by your body responding to the sweet taste in the mouth. And can also cause weight gain! I do have medical knowledge and Insulin is only secreted in response to Glucose molecules attaching to the receptors in your Pancreas, so him extrapolating Insulin release to the taste itself kinda doesn't make sense to me! May be Slpenda, aspartame etc may not be the best alternatives but natural sweeteners seem safe so far especially how Keto diet is revolves a lot around such natural sweeteners! Thoughts? Are you a fan? Whether or not sweeteners are safe to be used in your weight loss journey esp cause many of us may not tolerate sugar well for life! https://youtu.be/DTIK8n0WTBU

Wow, that's a drag. I'm just the opposite. I'm on day 8 of pre-op and have nearly no hunger. I do pump a lot of water through me though because I learned sometimes when I feel hungry I'm actually thirsty. My only issue, and it's minor is that I am having trouble sleeping at night. I understand it isn't uncommon with Keto and high protein diets, but I wish I could get a really restful night in. All the best!

Liver shrink Diet
lizonaplane replied to timetolose120's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't know if this is normal, but it doesn't surprise me. You are getting probably fewer calories than you're used to. Many people talk about feeling really terrible with headaches and other symptoms when they start the liver shrink diet due to "keto flu." I know when I first started eating only 1200-1400 calories in preparation for surgery I started being cold and tired all the time, but that is pretty normal for me when I'm eating less. Also, I wanted to go to bed early because I didn't want to eat any more. I don't have trouble getting up in the morning because I'm a morning person, but that's just me. I would give it a few days and see if it gets better, then maybe call your surgery center to see if they have any recommendations. The good news is that most people say they have loads more energy a few months after surgery (once their body recovers!) than they did before surgery. -
Need for tasty foods but am I moving too quickly?
Pilot my best self replied to Pilot my best self's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Thank you! Point taken. I am in need of some variety and am trying to find meals that are simple, tasty and on plan. But as you say, my priority is to maximize weight loss at this stage. It’s been going fairly well so far and I don’t want to disrupt the steady progress I am seeing. But I’ll keep that keto pizza in mind for some time in the future. -
to gain five pounds of true weight, you would have to eat 17,500 calories over and above what your body needs. So it's definitely water weight. unsweetened cocoa powder shouldn't be an issue. A tablespoon of that is something like 15 calories, and it's loaded with antioxidants. The brown sugar is problematic, though, esp if you're doing Keto. Swerve makes a great brown sugar alternative, if your body is OK with artificial sweeteners.
-
Yes. I am ashamed. I ate a cup of nonfat yogurt with 1/8 cup of brown sugar and cocoa. Boy was it good but it wasn’t worth it. I felt much better physically the rest of the day after that, but I got on the scale tonight and I weigh 5 pounds more than I did this morning. So now I have lost a net 7 pounds instead of 12 in 6 days. I’m not going to kick myself over it. For now I guess I’ve got to continue the keto journey even if i do not feel well most of the time. Because I’ve passed out once and almost again yesterday, I am going to call the general doctor tomorrow to schedule an appointment before surgery. Because I don’t think things are right with my body. The bariatric clinic says it is not the diet but I am not convinced of that. It may be that some people just cannot do well on a plan that has only 10 grams of carbs per day and 700 calories. I mean, I am 65 years old.

Can I see some before and after pics?
Erica8 replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
After is on top 12 years out. Before pic is AFTER my WLS when I gained most of my weight back But I have done keto for 3 years now. -
12 years out. I had several blood transfusions after my WLS so I had big regrets. The issue was that I replaced food with alcohol (was not a drinker prior to WLS) 3 years ago I got my sh*t together and got serious about supplements and started Keto. I am now at a healthy weight 145 and plan to eventually get back down to my lowest weight (135) which was pre covid. I gained 10 pounds when the lockdown started. I don't regret the surgery as much now as most if not all the issues I had were avoidable and just really my fault for not following the post op way of life.
-
I am also 12 years out. Lost a lot of weight SW was 310 day of surgery I was about 265. I gained quite a bit back.... and 3 years ago started Keto and now I am about 145 (pre covid I was 135....gotta lose the covid pounds now) I was going through a divorce when I had my surgery and I never had good habits after. Basically I replaced food with alcohol (was not a drinker prior to WLS). Now I don't drink and take tons of vitamins. My labs have never been better but I still struggle with healthy eating habits. Every day though gets better and Keto was a lifesaver.
