1500 cal diet pre surgery
mandyq1985 replied to mandyq1985's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's not a lot in comparison to what I'm used to eating. I have eaten a lot of Greek yogurt. Grilled chicken. Veggies. Trying to get protein and eat mostly healthy. Like I said I don't know if it's a mind game I'm playing with myself just knowing I can't have what I want and making me feel hungry. -
One week post-op with severe reflux and bile
dmich108 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Had the VSG on 10/24. Was doing fine, until today. Woke up with severe reflux. Eating yogurt didn't help. Drinking water made it worse. Spoke to surgeon's assistant, finally, and was told -- ready for this -- I'm not eating enough. First time in my life I've been told that. I've been "eating" Greek yogurt, about 4 teaspoonfuls at a time; drinking protein shakes, about two hours to get down 4 ounces; a little bit of chicken broth; and water. Anyone have any ideas what more I can try to eat at this point. I don't get to introduce food until around Thanksgiving. -
Before The First Lap Band Fill
legnarevocrednu replied to DustyRider's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey there. I had surgery the day before you. I will not get my first fill until January 3rd (if I need it...I'm hoping I don't!) so I don't think the amount of time you have to wait is abnormal. I do not find myself hungry in between meals. My advice to you is to focus on protein at this point. Protein keeps me satisfied between meals so I don't snack. Also, watch your serving sizes. Stay within the serving size guidelines and track your calories, fat, carbs, and protein. Just for some ideas, I'll list what I typically eat and the schedule I eat it on. Breakfast (8:30): Yogurt or SF Carnation Instant Breakfast. You could also have a scrambled egg with some cheese on top. Lunch (12:30 or 1:30): A serving size of FF refried beans (which is about 1/2 a cup), mixed with FF cheese, Low skim ricota cheese, and FF sour cream. It is VERY filling and VERY yummy. Plus, lots of protein! Dinner (5:30 or 6:30): If I did not have my SF Carnation Instant for breakfast, I'd have it for dinner. If I did, I'll have another serving of my FF refried beans. Sometimes I'll have a SF popsycle. I am still in the mushy stage (progressing to soft foods tomorrow). Starting tomorrow I plan on incorporating Tuna and Chicken salad with Low Fat mayo. Well, hope this helps in some way! I suggest making sure you get AT LEAST 50 grams of protein in. It should help with the hunger. Good luck!! -
Puree Food ideas?
Julia_N replied to lapband 8-26-09's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One of my favorites is what I call eggs Rancheros. I use 1/2 cup of fat-free refried Beans as a base and add a bit of low-fat cheddar or Mexican-blend cheese. I top it with two eggs softly scrambled (or you can poach them), some taco sauce or smooth salsa, more cheese, and a dollop of low-fat sour cream. I haven't had a fill yet, so I don't have a lot of restriction and can easily eat this much. It's quite filling and feels like "cheating" when you can have Mexican food. I also like a cup of non-fat Greek yogurt with a couple of tablespoons or 1/4 cup of unsweetened apple sauce. I add a Splenda or two and sprinkle cinnamon on it. If I can find some premixed apple pie spice, I'll try that. -
that early out I'd be still sticking to nutritionally dense things. The Quest chips that the above poster mentioned would probably fill the chip craving. I used to eat a lot of Greek yogurt when I had a sweet craving - sometimes regular, sometimes Carbmaster or Light & Fit - not sure if you like yogurt or not, though. Or sugar free pudding or sugar free Jello - I used to sometimes mix some protein powder in with my sugar free pudding to bump up the protein. And I often put a dollop of light Cool Whip on my Jello. I didn't eat popcorn until I was over a year out since it wasn't on my plan, but you'll be surprised at how much of that a person can put away, even after surgery. That's not very nutritious, either - well, other than it has fiber.

Food Frustration
CheckYes replied to schwanguysgal's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Scrambled egg, yogurt, tuna salad, mashed peas, ricotta with tomato sauce... Get creative! -
I do agree about the hydrolyzed collagen being a "poor quality" protein, but what does your nut say about the protein in cheese, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and milk? Less than 20% of the protein in them is whey protein.

Hungry after 3 weeks
SoccerMomma73 replied to librarychick's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'll be 3 weeks tomorrow and while I definitely can eat more than I am supposed to I'm also definitely as hungry as I used to be. I'm trying to eat 3 small (but not small enought) soft/healthy meals, late morning I break out the string cheese and late afternoon I eat a small low fat yogurt...it seems to be the magic combo that will keep me from grazing until my next meal....I don't know what else to tell ya, it will get better, just do your best and be patient! Good luck! -
I have been banded for 7 years and in this whole time, breakfast is a no go. Best I can manage is a smoothie mid morning - usually after 10am. I am soooooo bored of smoothies!!!!! I would love to eat an egg, or some bacon, anything really, but any attempt means it comes back up shortly after. Sometimes I can manage a couple crackers with some soft cheese or a couple bites of a granola bar, but not a good protein source. Even yogurt is a no go. Any suggestions??? My band is good. I was formerly way too restricted and now that I am a bit more open, I am able to manage better options for lunch and dinner without things backing up or coming up, but mornings are bad. Even juice is tiny little sips over about an hour or more......

why do i want to eat....and eat at night?
Aries replied to pottergirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm in your boat! Pre-sleeve: Breakfast- large cup of coffee lunch (if any)- salad or wrap But when I got home, all hell breaks loose. I would make chicken alfredo, steaks, mac and cheese, etc. Then, maybe a couple of hours later, I would have leftovers. This lasted maybe until 11pm. I could not stop shoveling food into my mouth. It was unattractive and borderline ridiculous. Fast forward to April 1st - the day I got sleeved. Everything seemed to be going great for the first two months maybe. Lately, I've found myself going up to the fridge, opening it, and looking inside, thinking maybe something yummy will catch my eye so I can devour it. Not good. Last week I emptied the whole thing out. I threw away everything that could potentially trigger a food fest. All i have in there is 1% milk, cheese sticks, greek yogurt, grapes, sugar free iced tea, cold cuts, and grapes. The grapes are there as a treat since they do have a lot of natural sugar. I find that even if I do go up to the fridge and "hunt" for something eat, I dont find anything that I want. Nothing tastes as good as skinny (or healthy) feels -
why do i want to eat....and eat at night?
lsereno replied to pottergirl's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
What I want to know is who doesn't struggle with Snacks after dinner? It's sure not me. One thing I have done is move back dinner time a bit so there is less time between dinner time and bedtime. And I also do as others have mentioned: Keep the crap out of the house, have some healthy snacking alternatives, find something else to do to occupy myself. Most of the time, the combination of those things works well. Also, I make sure to eat enough earlier in the day that I am not truly hungry. I do have a snack every night after dinner ,but I try to make it a healthy one that is filling. Last night I had 1 graham cracker and 1/2 cup greek yogurt mixed with a small peach and some Splenda. Yum! ( I am at goal. I didn't start eat many graham crackers till I got to goal.) Lynda Lynda -
Chicken broth and various cream soups - just don't get the soup to boiling or it will turn into a gooey thick mess. Also with Crystal light, milk and juices. I've even added it to my yogurt and apple sauce. Unfortunately, I've got a full six weeks of full liquid diet so I've not been able to experiment much. The sky is the limit though and the powder is really quite easy to work with and mixes well with almost zero taste added.

I'm a loser...and not in a good way
jguttery replied to Fluffy_Gurl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It sounds like you have a huge load (no pun intended) on you right now. What I mean is, there are some huge stress factors in your life!!!!! I would like to suggest that you might want to talk to a nutrietionist. Also count those calories!!!! Nachos are my favority cheat too, and I'm not saying to not treat yourself to them, but eat some protien before hand so I don't fill up on the nachos. My band is tighter in the mornings too... so breakfast for me is usually yogurt or soft eggs after a cup of hot coffee. Hot liquids seem to loosen my band a little. There will be ups and downs in weight loss...... but that does not mean you are failing, you have already recognized the weight flux.... now you just need to make a plan to decide where to go from here. As far as your friends weight loss, the band works differently for each person... her journey is her journey, just as yours is yours. You just have had a couple more hills to climb. There are four other banders in the area at my work..... each one has had different weight loss rates. Believe me there is no way that you are a loser (in the bad way)!!!!!! Hang in there, you can do it! Make yourself a small goal, maybe something like a 2 or 3 pound loss by whatever date..... and use every bit of the detmination that I know you have to reach it.. small goals build into larger ones. -
Week 5 Questions
Sleeveless in seattle replied to misslu58's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree. The food you are eating is filling you up without providing much nutrition. I am 5 weeks out yesterday, here is a sample of what I eat in a day...I am not perfect, just throwing out ideas. Breakfast: premier Protein shake (30 G protein) or Dannon light n fit greek yogurt (12 G protein). On occasion I've had 1/3 serving of malt o meal with a dab of yogurt and teaspoon of truvia mixed in. Doesn't provide much, but if I'm sick of the other two this is what I've had. Morning snack: if I've had a shake for breakfast I'll have a Greek yogurt and vice versa Lunch: 1 oz albacore tuna mixed with a little mayo or plain Greek yogurt, sometimes sprinkle a little ranch powder for a diff flavor, sometimes with 2 crackers or few bites of soft fruit. Pm snack: cheese stick, 1/4 c cottage cheese or chike protein iced coffee Dinner: little bit of whatever I cooked. Last night, 1 oz salmon and 1 piece steamed cauliflower. Salmon was a little too dry for my tummy so I added a spoon of Greek yogurt on top and sprinkled with Parmesan Snack (if needed): sugar free Popsicle, Greek yogurt or cottage cheese I am slowly incorporating more real foods and trying for less shakes and soft foods, but obviously that's a slow process. My main goal is to hit 75 G protein a day which I almost always do. I log every thing I eat because I'm not great at estimating intake. I'm currently hitting 600-700 calories a day which my nut thinks is good but she'd really like me tone at least to 800 with a long term goal of 1100-1300. Hope this helps. -
Hi, My surgery was Oct 3 and I too have been having nausea. My mother is freaking out and wants me to call the Lap Band Center, of course. I think maybe it's just normal for some people. I have been only taking in liquid as well. I tried some yogurt but it was a disaster. Does this feeling go away?

2 week diet starts today.....
Roo101769 replied to betty20032001's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My diet has a lot more selection. Cream soups, broths, yogurt, sf jello, sf pudding, sf ice cream, smooth cooked oatmeal or cream of wheat, cottage cheese, fruit juice, v8 and protein shakes. The day before surgery, in the early afternoon, I switch to clear liquid diet until midnight. I have had to go "#1" a LOT more while "#2" has become a lot less frequent. No need for bowl prep pre op due to this diet. So far it's not been too bad. All worth what waits at the finish line! -
My surgeon allowed up to 8 oz of juice during the first 2 weeks of the liquid diet but after that we couldn't drink our calories. I would try some Torani SF syrups. Also, you could try protein powder in Crystal Lite or stirred into Greek yogurt. Good in Greek Yogurt with some PB2 (powdered peanut butter) and a little milk to thin it out.

This is kind of funny because after I swim (1 hour) I am starving! My mother who also swims actually feels less like eating. Shrug. So I always plan to eat afterwards. Not sure if others will disagree (only have had one fill so no restriction) but before I eat I have a drink of water. I then eat my meal. Since I don't have restriction I usually feel like I could eat more (my doctor says 3 oz protein, 1/4 veggie, 1/4 startch). You might want to have a go to snack that after you've eaten and then waited 10 minutes that you can have if you are still ravenously hungry. Here are some thoughts grilled chicken, cheese stick, veggie, fruit. I live alone so I have the option of just not buying foods that I should'nt be eating. A greek yogurt with fruit would also only be about 160 calories which would be better than the cookies. Also how about sugar free pops?

Okay, I made it! I have to be really honest and say that the last seven days have been a little rough. Nothing happened that I wasn't fully aware of (only getting to drink 4 oz. of fluid to start off) but the reality of it all kind of came crashing down on me Sunday. I started to run a low grade fever 99.8 and it made me feel like JUNK! Thankfully when I woke up Tuesday morning the fever was gone and I felt human again. I get to start "squishy" foods today, but honestly, I am scared to try them. I have named my new stomach Seymour, because he has a mind of his own. I have spent the last week trying to figure out exactly what "Seymore" wants. Is it hungry, thirsty, full? I haven't had any vomiting and just a little bit of nausea. I have been sticking to my protein supplement shakes, tomato soup, low fat yogurt, instant cream of wheat, sugar free pop cyclices & crystal light. I need to read other people's post op blogs to see what the normal thoughts are on the first week, because I think that I have been kind of hard on myself. I am still a little sore on two of my incisions but I am back at work today hoping for the best. I work a desk job and have a fantastic boss so I have the flexibility to take it easy. I did get on the scale this morning and I am down 10 pounds. I think I will be more excited about it when I fell fully recovered from surgery. I'll keep you guys posted.

Hi all, Here's the backstory...surgery July 21st....moved up food stage to yogurts, crackers, soups and cheeses ect. On my 3week 2day post surgery I woke up and drank a 4oz protein shake with skim milk (I have done this before but it had been about 5 days) and then proceeded to get sooooo sick...nausous all day....started throwing up in the evening and proceeded to throw up stomach acid and bile until I went to ER the next morning. Surgeon has a CT done and says my surgery (sleeve) is perfect but I have inflamation in my instestines and says I need to see a Gastro guy. I was admitted for a 23 hour observation, surgeon says that inflimation means Crohn's. Well, the Gastro guy says he see's this about 5 times a month and that the two camps don't necessarily agree that one can be a precurser to the other at times. Well, the Gastro guy says that 99% of the time it is NOT Crohn's but a bug so I have to be on a drug for a month and then resee him. MY QUESTION: Could my reaction to the protein shake plus skim milk have caused such a allergic reaction to make me begin to get sick and then ultimatley dehydrated with ended me in the hospital for the weekend? I'm a little concerned to try the protein shakes again although I have been told to stay away from too much milk products...kind of tough to do because in my meal progression, much of it is milk based. Anyone out there lactose intolerant after surgery, how did you know? How did you progress from there because even if I am not for the long run...I kind of have to behave that way for now. Thanks for the support and help! Tracy W.

Problem with getting protein.
AnneG replied to jillw8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I add some unjury chicken soup flavored protein to my egg drop soup- And sometimes vanilla to my yogurt. -
Eat Greek Yogurt, soft cheese, lunch meat, kefir, At 4 weeks - 6 weeks I was slow to add food, too. Sometimes a shake just felt better. I doubt anyone is going to crucify you if you have a few more shakes at this point. Let your stomach tell you what it likes and add food in slowly.

The best little gadget I've invested in is the dessert Bullet. It's the coolest thing ever! You just put fresh frozen fruit in it and it comes out ice cream consistency. You don't have to add anything else to it if you Don't want to. My daughter likes to freeze yogurt cubes in the ice tray and adds it to the fruit (and of course chocolate chips ect..) I don't add anything And it's perfect!!! Highly recommended:)

I'm going to splurge on a new popsicle mold this summer. I make my own. I find that the summer fruits when in season can be pureed and set in a mold as is since they tend to be sweet enough on their own. Occasionally I may blend some greek yogurt for cream-sicles or switch it up and add whole berries to a puree to set. Like pureed kiwi with pitted and halved cherries. It looks pretty and taste great!
