Sounds like she has a case of Diarrhea of the Mouth. Remember everyone is different. Just bc one person had a complication from who knows what surgery they had and what type of pre existing problems they had ahead of time, doesn’t mean you will. Try to think positive thoughts and don’t let her get in your head with the negative comments. Meanwhile this is very exciting change coming up for you!! So it begins...I hope
Jaelzion replied to Just1Starfish's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's funny you mention your height changing. I was always told I was 5" and 1/2" tall. Then in the last few years, they started measuring me at 5'1". I know I haven't grown at my age, LOL. Maybe it's posture related, I don't know. I don't know how the Federal plan is structured, but my BC/BS plan really did not look for ways to disqualify me. And the list of comorbidities is pretty broad: Osteoarthritis Sleep Apnea High Blood Pressure High Cholesterol Type 2 Diabetes Venous Stasis Disease Soft Tissue Infections Back or Joint Pain You have NO back pain or joint pain from being overweight? No osteoarthritis in knees or hips? Those are both super common. In any case, I hate that you have to deliberately gain weight, but if that's what it takes... Best wishes, if BC/BS treats you like they treat me, you won't have any issues with preauthorization. -
Hello....first time poster here. I've started the process to have a consultation with a surgeon for Gastric sleeve surgery. As of now, I'm about 5 lbs short of 40 BMI, and have absolutely no co-morbids. I've watched the educational video and have received their information packet in the mail. I have been eating and trying to gain weight (which sounds completely counter-intuitive) because I REALLY want to have surgery. I had started the process twice before...actually had the psych eval, and went through 6 months of medically supervised weight loss, and tried every diet known to man. I got discouraged with the medically supervised weight loss because I plateau'd for several weeks and then despite changes, I actually gained weight. None of that program was covered by my insurance, so when they said I needed to come in more often (3x/week instead of once every 2 weeks), I just stopped. I had always thought I was 5'1" but at my most recent doctor's appointment they said 152CM, which comes out to 4' 11-3/4". Current weight is 201.5, which all calculates out to BMI 39.6. I've held off on taking the next steps in the packet because I'm not yet 40 BMI. My insurance is BC/BS Federal employees...anyone have experience with them? What happens if I get approved and then lose weight on the 2 week diet? I'm going to barely qualify as it is. Anxiety level is very high, but I want to do this. I'm sick of hating every picture I see of myself, and constantly being tired from lugging around 85 extra pounds. (sigh). I'm most concerned about not qualifying on insurance. Any encouragement would be very welcome.... Thanks!

Facial Hair
butterisnotacarb replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don't have a lot of all over facial hair but I do get them under my chin like crazy and have one or two random super long hairs in my cheek area. I'm almost 40. My mom gets the single long hair too so it's genetic I'm sure. I finally got fed up and decided to dermaplane. I do it myself with an eyebrow razor called Tinkle you can buy cheap on Amazon. There's a few great YT videos with 1 million+ views that show how to do it. No shaving cream, just damp skin. Never looked back. It also is a great way to exfoliate. I am on day 3 of my pre-op diet. It's not liquid but I have to keep calories 800-1000/day, with most coming from protein. Getting in the protein. Still so crazy hungry. I can't concentrate bc I'm so hungry. I've never been this food focused in my life. Any advice for not feeling so hungry??? ~ AuntieMAME

Post-op hypoglycemia that is NOT reactive hypoglycemia
Maisey replied to GreenThumb's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also have been off diabetes meds since the day of surgery. Every fasting BS I've taken has been in the 75-100 range. I will have my first labs done in 2 weeks. For the first time, I am looking forward to the results. I have felt shaky a few times. However, when I then test, I am safely in the normal range. I once heard that when someone who has had higher blood sugars over time begins to have more normal blood sugars due to treatment, that the normal sugars can feel like lows. I have no idea if that is actually true and I don't remember if I heard it from a reliable source. -
How faded are your surgery scars?
Kris77 replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
I’m hoping my scars fade as well. I’m only 2 mos or so Post PS of TT, breast lift and aug. He has me using scar gel twice a day on them🤞🏻🙏🏻 I don’t scar well either. I’m a keloid former. When I broke my ankle my husband rubbed cocoa butter on the scar every day for me and it flattened out and you barely can see the scar now. It creeped me out too much to touch it bc you could feel the screws when you rubbed it so he is the best hub ever and did that for me!❤️ -
2.5 weeks from surgery and the nerves are REAL!
Tim C replied to JaysWife's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
NO! If you have the documentation then you send it to someone specifically and call them and ask if the have everything they need. That is BS! Don't give up. That is what they want you to do. -
Really Struggling - advice needed
Kris77 replied to jackie1533's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I wasn’t able to get a lot of fluids down in the beginning too which made me dehydrated. So in turn I had to take small sips frequently instead. That and make sure I did bc I wasn’t peeing a lot which meant dehydration which isn’t good. Once I concentrated on small sips freq that helped. It will get better. There is a Clear Protien by Premier Protien. You can get hydrated at the same time as getting your Protien in. Keep your head up, it’ll get better. -
the day I went from puree stage to soft stage, we celebrated by going to a our favorite restaurant with some family .. I ordered a cup of crab soup and a side of baked beans. Ate about 5 bites total. Server was afraid there was something wrong with my food haha. Family couldn't believe how little I could eat but were very supportive and curious. Was kind of hard to believe that I used to get the soup as an appetizer, then a sandwich or meal with beans as ONE of the sides. And I always ate every bite! the rest of the soup and beans fed me for about 3 days afterwards haha

Order some soup and eat the broth. That will be filling too bc it’s hot.

Must have this recipe!! Looks so good!! You are quite the chef!! If your food tastes as great as it looks....Maybe you should be one! Bc it looks amazing! -
I take BC for acne/PCOS and am still losing weight. You might just need to try different brands of pills until you find one that works for you and doesn’t affect your weight.

Friend saw me for the first time in 3 months...
GreenThumb replied to BayouTiger's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This has been an incredibly helpful thread. I suspect most of us have had similar experiences to some degree. When I divorced 7 years ago I lost a LOT of friends who I considered family, so that prepared me for this journey. I actually had to cut out my mother and brother, the former because she loves to sabotage, and the latter because he weighs 400+ pounds and doesn't want to hear about how I'm doing. It'll be interesting to see how co-workers (and my uber-body-conscious athlete boss) react when I return to work. All this to say that there's nothing wrong with healthy boundaries. You can still love your family and friends, but you DO NOT have to tolerate their BS or feel responsible for their issues and hang-ups. Love them from a distance and decide later if you want to let them back in. -
Well said! I am a retired nurse and I am fed up with the selfishness of people who ignore the public health risk of this potentially deadly disease! We used to care about each other in America. I don’t know what changed that but it is certainly not good.

Surgery in the morning. Pain & Nausea?
BayouTiger replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Goodluck tomorrow, Tim!! I can’t give you any advice on pain bc I had a hernia and diaphragm repair and that sucked, but definitely get up and walk whenever and as soon as you can! The CO2 pain is worse than the staples in your gut!! I’m not sure if you’ve ever been under general anesthetic, but if you haven’t and don’t know how you react, I would just ask for a few CCs of Zofran in my IV from the CRNA prior to them taking you back. It’s not got any narcotic, sleepy, or negative properties or side effects except being an anti-nausea and anti-emetic. I do terrible with anesthesia so it’s my go to. My last bit of advice is to work really hard from day one to train yourself to take in VERY VERY small amounts of fluids at a time. I’m a gulper always have been. So I’ve had to REALLY work on it. Because that restriction is legit the first week. But it does open up and you can drink and not feel parched!! I actually tried my first protein shake and instinctively took a huge chug of it and sat up straight miserable for 2 hours waiting for it to go down. So that was my lesson. Baby baby sips til my pouch opens up a bit more, which my surgeon said will happen as I’m able to add more than just liquid!! You are going to do GREAT!!! You have a ton of support on here! Your posts are great!! Please keep us updated!! Goodluck and congratulations! Ill be thinking about you! -
18 hours away...and here come the nerves
BayouTiger replied to chiquitatummy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ahhhh. Congratulations!! You can so do it!! I didn’t sleep a wink the night before my surgery, and I had a 3.5 hour drive the next morning for my 7 o’clock sx! It’s so worth it!! I’m 2 weeks out and I feel AMAZING. Today I lifted a 20 lb bag of dog food instinctively, and ended up on the couch for the rest of the day (13 days out). But I got my fluids in and some liquid Tylenol end I feel so much better. The best advice I can give you is to get up and walk the halls as soon as your nurses give you clearance. It helps disperse the gas in a major way. The gas pain is worse than the actual procedure!!! I wasn’t allowed out of bed for 48 hours; but as soon as I was able to get up it was almost an immediate difference!!! You might (not everyone is, but I just wanted to share with you just incase cause I wish someone would have told me) be swollen after surgery and it maybe hard to get fluids down the first couple days! Don’t get discouraged! Experiment with temperatures, different types of liquids and SF flavor additives (preferably with electrolytes) until you find something that sits well with you. At the beginning take BABY sips. By Monday (day 9) I was able to drink 2-3 sips at a time til restriction hit, without feeling like I was drowning and that’s when I knew the swelling had gone down!!! I will say a prayer (I really hope that’s okay and not insulting, if not I’ll just send you very good thoughts) that you don’t swell up too much and you’re able to tolerate your fluids super soon!! If you need anything from a 2 week out surgery buddy (I’m 2 weeks out, but bc of being in the hospital so long I’m really on week 1), please contact me! I may not know about the months post op stuff, but I’m right here with you in the immediate aftermath!! Also, vets such as @catwoman7@Jaelzion@JMJames92@ms.sss@Arabesqueeven though not all have had the same surgeries have been a wealth of knowledge to me, I would highly highly suggest reading their posts, advice, tips, and tricks even on older threads. They’ve been a godsend, encouragement, and a stranger support system from afar that I never knew I would need and benefit so much from. Goodluck, stay positive, and please reach out if you need anything!! Please update on how you’re doing in a few days!!! -
6 months pre-op WL effect eventual possible total WL?
greenchilegoddess replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and detailed response! I'm also just an inch taller than you so we are very similar! I think I'm used to dropping a lot of weight the first month of a diet bc of "water weight" and then having things slow down, and sort of assumed that might be what the first month of post op is like (or might not be like if I already lost 70lbs). I also noticed you got gastric bypass in 2015. Do you mind me asking why you chose that over the sleeve? I originally went in wanting the bypass because of my terror of just hitting a wall and not losing after a certain point. My surgeon was open to it but suggested the sleeve since I'm young (28 at surgery time) and don't have GERD, so I've been leaning that way now. I just still have that nagging desire to do the thing that will give me the best shot at losing the most weight long term, and the malabsorbtive part of bypass is appealing for that reason. Also, I totally understand if that's too personal or involved! Happy to talk in DMs or not at all. You've been super helpful! -
Friend saw me for the first time in 3 months...
BayouTiger replied to BayouTiger's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks for your response. I think you hit the proverbial nail on the head. My group of friends have always been my size (pre-pre-op). The 4 of us shared and swapped clothes weekly. So I do think that maybe you’re right, and seeing me lose weight this fast and in this manner is something that is bringing out the true jealousy. They were so supportive until they all saw me in person (quarantine and sx prep has made it hard to see people IRal) in the last 2.5 weeks. Then they dropped like flies. I guess they didn’t realize what it would entail. My pre op therapist warned me about a lot of WLS pts losing relationships over these surgeries, but I was naive and said nah not me, I’ve got the most supportive people in the world. Whoops. But as far as WLS “cheating,” it’s just bs. It’s like 100x harder than any fad diet you can think of. But if this surgery extends my life another 40 years, I’ll be a cheater. -
This Pre-op diet is a b$@!:
Beccs2011 replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am on the 10th day of my liquid diet. I have to do 2 weeks. Surgery is Tuesday the 23rd. I am fed up with broths so I have moved onto orange Power Ade Zero. Mixed with my protein powder it tastes just like an orange creamsicle. The sugar free popsicles I have too but they taste tart to me. Good luck on your journey. The smell of food will be overwhelming for you but then the thought of eating it will disgust you and then you will feel SO proud of yourself!! In 10 days I am down 23.6 pounds!! -
BCBS FED Basic olan has no deductible, it is PPO (out of network providers not paid) and out of pocket maximum is NOT affected by bariatric surgery (they keep it secret). Hospital care: inpatient $175 per day, up to $875 per admission, outpatient $100 (my surgery was outpatient). Surgery: $150 in office settings, $200 in non-office settings.

How long after surgery did it take you to feel normal?
jami.1992 replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had gastric bypass 5-14-20....it took about 3 months for me to feel what I would consider “normal”. The soreness and fatigue was gone after 4-6 weeks. I had some depression after my surgery due to not feeling like I could participate in family functions bc everything in my family was centered around food. Also most of my family didn’t know I had WLS. So lots of factors (that were my choice) played into that. But as of today I am 9 months post-op and have lost 130 pounds! I have more energy and I am happier than I have ever been. ❤️ Congrats on your surgery!! Wishing you happiness and a speedy recovery! -
I’m scheduled to have my VGS March 19th but I’m reading everyone’s posts about being consistently hungry. I want to do the sleeve so I’m not hungry all the time! I thought the whole point was to not feel so much hunger. Can I drink fiber between meals to not feel so hungry? Does anyone have words of advice for this bc im considered not doing the VGS since I do t want to feel hungry for the next 30+ years!
