Freaking Out A Little (Pre-Op Diet Worries)
Tammi J replied to Sassy Gizmo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Good morning Sassy, I was just introduced to this website by my now bariatric Dr. I am 12 years out from a full gastric bypass, after having the lap-band originally. I switched to the full bypass five years after having the band because the band slipped and was shutting off my esophagus. For either of those surgeries, my bariatric doctor did not have me do anything different as far as dieting prior to surgery except liquids the day before as well. However, this was a very long time ago...2005 for the band and 2010 for the bypass in CT and the same surgeon. Fast forward to today, actually yesterday I saw my new bariatric doctor because I am going through the procedure for a revision surgery and she has informed me that I will be on full liquids for a week prior to the surgery. I am going in for revision due to complications with GERD and trouble swallowing. Although I have gained some of the weight back - 15lbs of the 132 originally lost, the goal is to alleviate my symptoms of discomfort. So in answer to your question, maybe it is a doctor preference about dieting. I wouldn't be overly concerned. However, being it that you have surgery on the 28th, enjoy the holiday and on the 26th keep it light as far as intake if you think that would ease your mind. Best of luck, Tammi J -
My vsg was 12-19 and I am currently in the full liquid phase of the post op diet. The protein shakes fill me up so much that I can barely finish them and I use protein Gatorade zero and water to help with hydration. I haven't had any complications and I am truly grateful about that. I am also following my Dr's instructions completely but I'm nervous about the next stage because I get full so quickly after liquids alone. Best wishes for a safe surgery and recovery! Does everyone get a boob job after weight loss?
CanyDome replied to anniedebbie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree with you, and in fact, it's a pretty hard surgery with several serious consequences, so it's worth thinking a few times about the need for it. My friend, after this surgery, disappeared from work for several months because of the development of complications. So make use of expert-written resources before you believe a surgeon's reviews on the Internet. Medical interventions are essential and complex and need to be rational. Otherwise, it seems that such manipulations do not make sense. -
So sorry you experienced this. Though extremely low, there is always a chance of a complication like you said. Though, I’m surprised by such severe leakage & bleeding from your surgery. My surgeon sewed & stapled so double sealed my tummy. I wonder if your surgeon did this? I’m very glad you were in the hospital when this happened & they are able to operate again to help you so quickly. All the best with your recovery.

i am so sorry to hear this but i do know the complications are real. I pray you overcome this and continue to recover quickly.

Food Before and After Photos

Vegan bruschetta w/hummus and cucumber- Before and After. I made a much larger version for my mostly vegan child to show her it was a very quick meal (5 mins) because she only ever makes either a complicated breakfast or nothing at all (but either way she’s annoyed 🙄) BTW I’m eating off of a lid to tupperware because I’m in a stand-off with the child who is supposed to do dishes. -
7 day post op mental breakdown
Sandra01C.Decker replied to lunar.crunch303's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
...It is hard to find words after reading your story, but what I can claim without a doubt is that there is nothing more painful than being lied in such post surgery cases. The operation is doubly morally complicated to overcome when your soul is crying out for lies received. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about from personal experience. I was asking myself "who am I?", being morally destroyed, but https://graduateway.com/essay-examples/who-am-i/ is the only thing that helped me survive. These essay examples saved my soul. If I can help you in any way now, then DM me, I'm right here with you for you. -
It's not unusual to have trouble with certain liquids, so as long as you're able to keep at least something down, I'm guessing that's why your team isn't overly concerned. Now if you couldn't keep any liquids down and it lasted more than a day or so, that would be considered a medical emergency. Separately, the intense pain on eating is concerning. That's not normal at all, so I'd be pushing them on that. Especially when combined with the liquid issue, I have to wonder if you may have a stricture or maybe some other complication.

Hey guys! I'm three weeks post- op from Gastric Sleeve. Just curious as to if anyone else has had something called water nausea? I have not been able to drink water in any form (iced, room temperature, hot, flavored, etc...) without it coming back up the second it hits by stomach. The only fluids I have been able to keep down are Gatorade zero or tea with no calorie sweetener. Recently, Gatorade zero has also become like water to the extent where it makes me sick or very nauseous. Also, I'm in the soft foods and I was told I should be eating at least a quarter of a cup of soft foods, but I can't get through one bite that's smaller than my pinky nail without having an intense pain in the center of my upper stomach below the sternum. The pain has convinced me that eating in general just isn't worth it and I have the same issue when it comes to protein shakes. Has anybody experienced this and have any helpful advice? I've had to get fluids for the two weeks and my doctor says it's all normal, but it's causing me to spiral into a pit of depression because everyone I've talked to has said they never experienced anything like this and therefore can't give me advice.

So sorry you experienced this. And they always do it out of the goodness of their heart & in your best interest. Out of curiosity, does your friend have a weight issue? Could it be jealousy that you are doing something about your health & she isn’t?? Get some stats ready for next time you see them. Morbidity rates after bariatric surgery ate less than 1% which is way less than many other surgeries. 0.7% for appendectomy while only 0.3% for sleeve. Obesity is the 5th highest cause of death world wide - 2.8 million people die each year from obesity related illnesses & complications. Would they comment if you were having a different non weight related surgery? I deliberately did not tell some friends. One in particular as she has always been very competitive. I told her I was seeing a dietician & had done a lot of research into eating & in relation to my personal needs. All true & sure enough she started seeing a dietician (she had put a little weight -age- but wasn’t even really overweight). And then came the what size are you wearing now questions. She was always wearing the same or a smaller size. Mind you she wasn’t my size but you can understand why I didn’t tell her.

Don’t let them get to you. Tell them you’ve researched it and you’re not concerned. Complications from obesity is the concerning part.

My surgery ended up being much more than expected. I went in having bypass and a Hiatal hernia repair. When my surgeon got inside, the hernia was twice as bad as it looked on the pre-op scans (level 4 of 5) and I have major damage to my esophagus caused from years or severe GERD. My 2 hour surgery ended up being 5 hours as he repaired my esophagus as well but everything went well with no complications. I ended up getting a second dose of gas since the surgery took so much longer and more extensive. Now, recovery ... WHEW! I am not going to lie, that gas pain was no joke! I was MISERABLE the next day! I have a VERY high tolerance to pain, rarely take ANY pain meds but this was killer. Yes, it hurt to breathe, hurt to move... hurt to be alive. haha I took pain meds anytime they offered them, which doesn't actually help with the gas pain BUT they knock me out so I could at least sleep through the pain! By the second day (still in the hospital) I was off IV pain meds but took oral (crushed and disgusting) pain meds in the morning and then one more time for my trip home from the hospital. Once home, I never needed another pain pill, I didn't even take Tylenol. I still had minor gas pain, which was mostly in my shoulder and a heating pad helped. I had NO actual surgery pain, or the gas pain just masked it? I had 1 incision that oozed, called the surgeon and it was normal. Took longer to heal up but never caused me any issues or pain. Once I got past the 2 days of gas pain I was smooth sailing. I am so grateful how easy my recovery was. I mean, not one issue at all. I hit my fluid goals in less than a week and was hitting my protein goals in just over a week. I had no issues drinking anything cold or warm. Now, 8.5 months post-op and still no issues at all. I can eat anything, have no issues tolerating anything. I THINK I may have dumped once, but it was mild enough that I am not even 100% sure it was a dumping episode. I slept in the recliner for about a week because it was more comfortable and when sleeping on my side the weight of my belly pulling made the incisions on the opposite side get irritated. But after that, I was good to sleep however I wanted. Everyone is definitely different. Just remember, every plan is different but you trusted your team and you trusted your surgeon with your life (literally) so trust their plan. Follow THEIR/YOUR plan and listen to them over other people. Take it easy for a few days, walk, walk, walk and BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!!!

It really is different for each individual. I can only tell what I experienced from my Gastric Bypass surgery on Nov 8th. I felt the gas the first few days but no real discomfort to me. Sometimes just changing position would help. No pain per say but I walked a lot around the house and honestly was too tired those first few days to take the dog for a walk. No problem sleeping (I sleep on my side anyway). They gave me pain meds to take home but I never needed any. Speaking of tired, remember you will be recovering from surgery so you will be worn out. Rest, rest, and recuperate. My first 2 weeks was a "full liquid diet" where I lived on protein shakes and yogurt. My focus was on healing, getting protein, and fluids. Again, I experienced no pain, no GERD, and very little constipation. By the 2nd week I had more energy, so started taking the dog for a morning walk again ( she is so Happy!). Still not hungry! 3rd & 4th week was my "pureee phase" and again no pain or complications. My energy was still increasing however I made sure I was active in the morning because the afternoons still saw my batteries running low. During my 4th week I added my Airdyne stationary bike to my routine after the morning walk. Then had a 2 week "soft textured" phase which I am entering the final week. Still no pain or complications. Still learning the "full indicator" (when to stop eating) and trying to find foods that I want to eat (especially in this phase). Still not hungry but I have become aware of when my actual stomach and not my head says "feed me". Looking forward to the "Bariatric regular" phase starting soon. I honestly feel that these previous phases (including pre-surgery) have prepared me for the long run. So in summary, I personally did not experience any difficulties or pain with this surgery but am enjoying not only the weight loss but the healthy lifestyle. Also, my blood sugar & BP are normal without any medications for the first time in decades. Listen to your bariatric team, stick with the plan and you will be fine. You are going to have great 2023!

Need help with husbands post op eating
Bettyboop56 replied to HappyCruiser's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I would approach him that in your education on the set stages of eating that bacon would be week 7 or 8. That you are concerned about his health but would not be supportive when he gets dumping or complications. -
Lapband to Gastric Bypass after 12 years with band
pintsizedmallrat replied to aliceinthegardenofpearl's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Lap-Band has become a lot less popular over the last decade or so; not eliminating the ghrelin producing tissue means that you're far more likely to regain or have difficulty losing and complications. I think your story is more typical than not; everyone I've ever known who had a lap-band is bigger now than they were before they got it and many have had them removed. -

Fighting Depression and Mental Exhaustion
St77 replied to Caitlyn130's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hang in there, as hard as it is now, you will get through this! As an RN, you know how important to stay hydrated is and getting the nutrients. Starting the purees might help because it's likely offering something different than the shakes. I had RNY and was alone for most of my recovery. I used that time to allow my body to heal from this major surgery, and when I couldn't nap, I took the time I never had to normally catch up on shows I wanted to watch. Even at 7 months out and complications that I'm having, I don't regret my surgery. I can move easier and breathe easier. I hope you start to feel better. This board is a great place to vent and find support. -
Sleeve to mini bypass, scheduled for Nov 3rd looking for others
Isabel1246 replied to Isabel1246's topic in Mini Gastric Bypass Surgery Forum
So, update as this Thursday is 1-month post-op. As it turns out I was prepared for the sleeve surgery but mine was very different. I know that everyone's experience is different, here is mine. I woke up in quite a bit of pain and was a little surprised because a lot of people say their MGB didn't hurt but mine did. I got my walking in and slept, handled the sips of water at first and then the jello okay. I couldn't finish a whole cup but still good. Recovery was okay for the most part, but I didn't take it easy as I got home and was cooking dinner every day for 10 days straight. At exactly 10 days post op I began to feel a bad stitch of pain on my left side behind where the drain had been. At this point my wounds are closing well. I notice that it hurt if I laid on my back and tried to bend at all to my left but also if I turned to the right it felt like a rock was on my side. Long story short I took to Facebook and learned that it was common, and people referred to it as the b***h stitch, so I ignored it. The pain got so bad that I just couldn't, I went to see my doctor and turns out it's an infection. 🤦♀️ So he put me on a strong antibiotic and now here I am, nearing my 1 month post op and still feeling pain but it is definitely more manageable. Everyday is better and better. I have a lot of restriction and am just learning my body's was of saying enough. My HW 286, SW 274, CW 250 I am very optimistic that this was the way to go but complications happen unfortunately. -
Having GERD. Will insurance cover revision if BMI IS 31?
Dee Steppe replied to NewlySleeved12282020's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had the same thing, acid reflux terribly, weight gain just all around miserable. I had had the roux-n-y 15 years ago. I had called to check into the revision surgery and the first thing they did was an upper barium test. Low and behold I have a 2 1/2 cm fistula attaching my pouch to my remnant stomach. At that point, it became a repair of a complication instead of a revision. My surgery is coming up and I am so excited. Sent from my SM-G973U using BariatricPal mobile app -
Formula for logging fluids & proteins
Arabesque replied to Sully143's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just log it when you have finished drinking all you made. Or if you don’t finish it, just record what you did drink. So if you drank 3/4 of your shake that’s 6ozs of fluids & 3/4 (or 75%) of the total protein content of the protein powder you added plus the protein in the milk). Keep it simple when you can. There’s enough to be thinking about & working out in the beginning without complicating aspects. 😀 -
Nerves ahead of Dec 5th surgery
Jeanniebug replied to smc124's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started therapy about a month and a half or two months before surgery. Most of my fears were about complications, not so much about relationships. I once lost a lot of weight, about 5 or 6 years ago. So, I know that my marriage can handle me being thinner and eating differently. My goal is to be about 30 pounds smaller than I was at that point, but I'm not worried about my relationship. As far as attention from men, it's not really something I'm exposed to, very much. I don't really go anywhere where men can approach me - unless they do it at the grocery store or post office. In which case I can just say, "Thank you. I'm flattered, but I'm married." But, I'm sure I won't look like a good target, anyway - even after I lose weight. I dress very, very modestly. In my profile picture, I'm wearing a pajama shirt that is probably more skin than you'll see of me in public - that and my lower arms. I mostly wear t-shirts and ankle-length skirts when I leave the house. I also cover my hair. There are so many other ladies out there, to take a man's attention - he likely won't want to waste his time looking at me. And that's the way I like it. -
2 week pre-op diet help!
chelsea325 replied to MChaney's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre-op diet is made so that it shrinks your liver enough for them to safely do the procedure. By cheating, it can cause complications with surgery and also make it harder on you after the surgery. I know this isn't the answer that you want and you're going to see where some people don't even have to do a pre-op diet but trust your surgeon and take a protein shake or something else from your list to Thanksgiving so that you won't be tempted. Temptations are going to be there not just for Thanksgiving but every day after your surgery. Good luck ❤️ -
