Kaiser, waiting on surgeon appointment
Cali_Angel replied to Cali_Angel's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What kinda blood work? Like what did they test for? And did you have to do a pre op weight loss or diet? -
I had surgery on April 16th. So far, I've lost about 17lbs. I'm eating much smaller portions, but hungry again after about 3-4 hours. I have a 10cc or 12cc (cannot remember which) band with 4cc in it; have had one post op fill. How soon after your first fill did you get your second?? I'm

She got the information from a book and she did it for 10 days but she only had the that honey and lemon tea along with peppermint tea and lots of water, on her day 11 she did just orange juice and yesterday on her 12th day she did fruits and a little but of veggies. I can totally notice her weight loss, now she is starting to really watch what she eats.

I finally reached one wonderland
angelfizz replied to keeping the faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi ya!!! Well you certainly seemed to have lost some - well done you: your ticker chart is very impressive! Sorry you are not feeling to chirpy - when things settle I'm sure you'll be fine - het and just think you are not GAINING any weight - so that's a good thing yeah? It's so easy to get sucked in 'inwardly' on this weight stuff to the point it is hard to be optimistic - which with added pain does not help - but could you try and get some uplifting peeps to come and see you? Maybe arrange a gentle shopping trip with a happy friend; with lovely cup of coffee and enjoy remembering how far you've come when opting to try new styles and smaller sizes? Do something however small to make you feel more happy and confident - hair do - nails - speaking to an old friend far away??? You have done so well to get this far - compare yourself to 5 years ago?!!!: You've climbed the mountain honey - enjoy the view!!! Much love x -
after the swelling and irritation goes down from the surgery you will feel hunger before your first fill. I only lost weight the first 6 weeks by pure willpower (don't know where that came from. after my first fill lost a few more but the third fill it was game on. I just had my fourth fill yesterday. i might not have made leaps and bounds in my loss but it's been steady

Hi Everyone:) !! I am a new member here, but have lurked for a few weeks. I am pre op and going for my consult Wednesday 3/8/06 at the New Program in Newport Beach, CA with Dr. Quebbemann. I went to their Information Meeting on Tuesday Night. I will be self pay as my insurance has a written exclusion for WLS. This will be my second consultation, I had one last summer and decided to lose weight with a Trainer and Jenny Craig. :faint: Well that did not work for me, I still have the trainer and am now just a more physically fit obese person:p ! The problem now is if I stop working out for one week I gain weight! I am 40, 80 pounds over weight, mom of two girls, married, living in the IE of So Cal (which is the opposite of the OC!!). I am in the gathering all of the info I can before I proceed with the process:help: ! And Pleased to Make Your Acquaitance:D ! Dawn AKA Wannalosealot

First off congrats on the surgery . Second off if your doc says to AVOID certain foods AVOID them. The post op diet is not for weight loss its to allow your stomach to heal so that you can form scar tissue around your band , its ESSENTIAL for the longevity of your band. Its not a suggestion its a MUST . Now that being said ...I would call him if your unsure of what you can and cant eat and ask ! Dont guess. Some docs allow some things others do not . For me Full liquids was anything the consitancy you could suck through a straw ( but dont ) so things like spaghetti sauce, soup. BUT You have to ask if your not sure. Ask them for alits of DO"s and DONT's. Good luck you can make it !!! mindy

Pre surgery testing
RestlessMonkey replied to macbook1527's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Many overweight people have sleep apnea, it is considered a "co morbidity" of obesity. Of course, if your weight CAUSES the apnea, then losing will CURE the apnea. Most sleep apnics are tired all the time even if they "think" they got a good night's sleep. Over time apnea can cause many problems including heart attack or stroke. Many people, facing lap band, are tested for apnea in order to fulfill insurance requirements. If you do have it, you may be prescribed a cpap machine which will help you keep breathing throughout the night so you can rest well. It will not impact your surgery; you will be intubated and on oxygen during surgery regardless. Post op your doc may want you to bring it to the hospital; it will be up to him, depending on your diagnosis and degree. Not all overweight people have it (I don't) and not all people with sleep apnea have obesity as a cause. Hope that answers your questions. -
Pre surgery testing
swellmom replied to macbook1527's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have sleep apnea and use a cpap machine. The doctor asked me to bring my machine with me the day of surgery in case they needed to use it in the recovery room. They didn't need to. The sleep study was interesting. They hook you to a million leads all over your body then say, relax and sleep. Somehow I managed to! Getting the cpap was one of the best things I ever did. I sleep so much better and am not a zombie anymore. I hope that as my weight falls of, I will be able to eliminate using it! Good luck! -
Ok so I just finished week 2 after my TT and things are great except I caught my husbands cold so sneezing is a OMG moment. Other than that no more pain meds and cutting back on the Advil. The brushing is almost gone, I have been massaging them daily. The swelling is going down and as that does so is the weight. If I get brave enough ill put up pictures lol.

Getting Approved with <40 BMI
KristenLe replied to Maribelle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Maribelle I would not recommend gaining weight. They usually require a documented history of a BMI over 40 and would see that you just gained alot. I would take the chance they'll approve at this BMI and if not - appeal. -
I have a weird question....has anyone had problems with a sore tailbone since they have lost their weight? My tailbone is sore all the time and it is starting to worry me. Does it go away? Any help would be appreciated!

I've read somewhere that people have pain b/c of the loss of mass on their butt. Haven't heard of any solutions other than gaining the weight back. Maybe a pillow?

Spiced Chicken Kebabs Easy, Stovetop, High Protein
gamergirl replied to gamergirl's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
Okay so you need the following: 1. Whole black mustard seeds 2. Whole cumin 3. whole coriander 4. Cinnamon sticks 5. Whole Green Cardamom pods 6. Cayenne pepper 7. Turmeric 8. Bay leaves 9. Whole black pepper 10. Nutmeg That sounds like a lot I know, but it will set you up for success. They are so much cheaper in an indian grocery store than our typical little jars we buy at the grocery, it's worth a trip. Alternatively, whole foods, sprouts, central market, etc. all sell them loose in containers and you scoop out what you need by weight. Get yourself a fancy container like this if you want to keep them in one location: http://www.amazon.com/Matbah-Stainless-Steel-Masala-Container/dp/B009CSZA1U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1378682426&sr=8-2&keywords=indian+masala+dabba And get a cheap coffee grinder like this: http://www.amazon.com/KRUPS-203-42-Electric-Grinder-Stainless/dp/B00004SPEU/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1378682491&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=coffee+grindr The differences in flavor come from either a) grinding the seeds, dry-roasting the seeds before grinding, or c) roasting in a bit of oil before grinding. Each of these tastes completely different. If you have this, you should be able to make the garam masala recipe I've posted, as well as the chicken curry. I will post some daal recipes one of these days and they will use the same spices, as would all the veggies I make. Enjoy! -
Pittsburgh Magee Hospitlal
Myaiku_Kuraitani replied to Joei's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Depends on the surgeon you choose if you're looking to see how long the weight monitored nutrition diet is. Also depends on your insurance. My surgeon was Dr. Courcoulas. Her program lasted 5 months for me. Magee is a great hospital. The staff was awesome when I was there. If you choose the surgeon I had, just follow her instructions and her surgical staff's instructions. I seemed to get a quick surgery approval listening to them. Feel free to ask me any more questions. I called called 10/25 or 10/26 and spoke with someone at Clark County Hospital regarding Lap Band surgery and paying for it with Care Credit. They have not called me back as of Oct 30/07. I called Caritas/St Mary's and Elizabeth Hospital and left a message today, 10/30/07 for them to call me back. Will be waiting for a call back. :help: Weight Loss Tickers

If you couldn't gain at all, and one month your weight is 390 lbs. and the next month you are 396 lbs. they can deny you. It's not the same insurance but my friend's nephew gained weight during Christmas and his insurance stopped him and said he would have to start over on his monthly weigh ins. I hope I'm wrong and it doesn't come down to that for you, God Bless!!!

It IS possible to defeat the sleeve, just like any other weight loss surgery. But, you're going to classes at Kaiser? I'm assuming yes. They will help you work on your food issues and, if they don't, then I recommend you find a counsellor who will help you work on them. The surgeon sleeves our stomachs, not our heads, so the head work has to be done by us, either before surgery, or afterwards. Good luck!!

June 11 surgery!
futuremrsparker replied to keefkeef1986's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
People call themselves "losers" after they get surgery and start losing weight. Lol so in that case, it's great to be on the losers bench! -
I had a really good visit today with my doc. Insurance has been approved, I recieved my pre-op testing orders and a price list for Optifast (2 week liquid diet required). I just have to lose five more pounds before I can be scheduled to see the surgeon. I cannot wait! Anyone else here from Deaconess Weight Loss Solutions in Evansville, IN?

Happy and SCARED...erosion, slip, infection...
the best me replied to HamuChan's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
It's SOOOO hard not to be paranoid, but, really you are doing fine. Erosion is hard to say, watch your medications (make sure you wash them through) but from what I have gathered, if you erode, you just do. It's very difficult to prevent. As for slippage, do what Ashley (Nikkee's sister) said and don't strain, lift, and for goodness sakes, eat slowly and carefully and follow your docs menu. Don't jump ahead on the eating. Keep you incisions cleaned and dry and lightly coated with an antibiotic ointment. Itching is a good sign, it means you are healing so embrace it when it happens! Here you are, doing this band thing and next thing you know you'll be past the healing stage and on to good long term weight loss! It's hard not to, but don't fret. -
I was under the impression that a huge fill all at once placed you at way more risk of complications than did sneaking up bit by bit. And really, as much as we all might like the idea of being tight and dropping tons of weight, it doesnt work that way. You're better off losing slowly and steadily and in the long run, nobody wants more fill than they need. The more you can eat and still be losing, the better nourished you will be and also the less risk of complications you have. I also dont think I could have handled my current fill level way back when my eyes were still bigger than my stomach. I can work with it now becuase I"m used to not eating so much, I have better habits, I know what does and doesnt work with my band and eating very slowly is second nature. If I'd had this much fill early on I would have been PBing left right and centre.

help me, low metabolism, vomiting and slippage !
hiddnstar replied to noza's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hi I havent had the problems you mention, so I don't think I can be of help there. I hope you can talk with your doctor and nutrition person. Are you planning to let your body heal and then get another fill at some point in the future? Someone familiar with what causes heart burn might be helpful to you -- to teach you about which foods to eat that would not contribute to heartburn. I don't know about what causes left side pain under the rib. I don't really know what to say that might help. I just wanted to at least respond that I read your post and hoping you find the right combination of medical care that will get you back on track and losing weight again. Keep asking your questions and voicing your concerns....and never, never, never give up. ~hiddn -
Ok, so I said I would put more up about this last night, but with the kids, getting ready for bed....I just didn't have time. The article is called "The Easier Way to Diet" by Martha Beck She talks about a five-step plan to help master your "beastie brain" and "relax the weight off." She makes four key points about our brains and how there are several layers to our brains. Basically, the "wanting to be thin" (cyberbrain) part of the brain is always at war with the "feed me now" brain (beastie). This also relates to the nervous system that goes back and forth between "fight or flight" and "rest and relaxation." Obviously, when the cyberbrain is in control you naturally restrict your intake. Repeated dieting and constant negative thoughts theoretically rev up your fight or flight/beastie brain. She has come up with five steps to combat the issue and calls it SO FAR: S - Stop - feeling anxious, hating yourself, just ate a ton? Stop and shout "Nature break!" O - Open - once you are by yourself work to get back to that "rest and relaxation" part of your brain by Opening up. Relax your body by opening your lungs, your eyes and stretch your muscles. F - Forgive - She says this is the most important step. You must forgive yourself and your body. Make a list of things that you've done right, don't just focus on having eaten those 10 Cookies (yeah, I used to be able to do that! No MORE though!). She says that eventually, you will reach self-forgiveness and the "calm observer" part of the brain will become more active. A - Accept - Once you can forgive yourself, it's time to allow things to happen as they do. (sounds sort of like the AA mantra - "accept the things I cannot control") R - Renew - From that place of "stillness, openness, forgiveness and acceptance, you can Renew your commitment to any eating plan you like." Is it over simplified? Sure. But I like the idea of forgiving myself for being overweight, for choosing poorly that day, past days and past years. I want to accept myself now and enjoy my new body as it begins to change through this process. Good luck to all of us! I look forward to our weigh ins on Friday. We have SO FAR to go in our journey, but at the same time, we really have come SO FAR...Thanks for reading...
