    Stall

Hang in there and keep your eye on the long term prize! I am feeling your pain and currently struggling with 10 day stall at 4 1/2 months post op. This is probably my 3rd stall so far. I’ve lost 70 lbs (includes pre and post op) so know I’m on the right track. Its hard to mentally keep things in perspective when we depend on the daily encouragement of seeing the scale drop. If it doesn’t move I have to fight the mental battle that I’m failing. Im still learning how to not completely obsess over the weight loss and allow myself to enjoy where I’m at today. It’s hard to do! I find great encouragement from those on this site who are veterans at this point and have experienced everything before. I have to trust their wisdom and keep to my eating plan and track my food intake religiously. I admit I find it very difficult not to weigh-in daily. That is my challenge for sure but I do measure every 4-6 weeks. I’ve been so surprised to see how many inches I’ve lost each time. I encourage you to get a soft measuring tape! Also take weekly photos. I upload them to my Baritastic app and amazed to scroll backwards and see how far I’ve come.

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Had my sleeve surgery on April 18. Still feel hungry all the time too, but get full fast now when eating the soft foods. This threw me off at first because my fantasy before surgery was that I'd never feel hungry again, but what actually happened afterwards was the opposite! On my first week post op appointment I think my Dr. thought I was accusing him of giving me a bad sleeve.. HAHAHA! Today is the day I get to start having "regular" foods as tolerated. I'm very excited and nervous at the same time. Funny thing is, I don't even know where to start, so all I have in the house to eat is the stuff from my soft foods diet! 🙂 Hardest part for me is keeping track of my protein and fluid intake as I have a very busy work schedule and don't always log right away. I know this is a week point and I'm working on it. I lost 19 lbs pre op, and 27 lbs post op so far. Tomorrow is my one month post op follow up. Their scale usually adds a couple extra lbs than mine so I'll have more official numbers tomorrow. Good Luck Everyone! And thanks for posting, the topical conversations found on this site truly help some of us get thru!

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Same here! Lost 14 pre-op, 9 in the first week post-op, then only 7 in the 3.5 weeks since. I see my doc tomorrow, and will report back. My surgery was 4/20.

    May 2023 surgeries

I can agree all I want to do is lay down. And I get tired pretty quickly. I’m only 4 days post-op and I’m tired of the broths and shakes. I have another week before I’m cleared for soft foods. I still have chest pains but I think I’m going good. Good luck to you all!

Thank you this was very helpful and insightful. I thank God for this group you guys are amazing. I’m only close to 3’weeks post-op and I’m struggling with this but the article is right it doesn’t happen all the time and I’m learning slowing what causes it

April 25th is my RNY date! Buddies?!

How is my late April surgery cohort faring? I’ve moved into soft foods with some caution but everything is going and staying down. I am trying 3-5 small protein heavy meals a day. Water goals have been harder to meet but the vitamins are ok. I’d forgotten to add B12 supplement until yesterday (!) so just started. My fatigue mid day was bonkers. Hoping the B12 helps. My first surgeon follow up is on Friday, I’m a little data obsessed, measuring and watching scale. Overall feeling more flexible, energetic (mornings) and happy to see the steady loss of 23 lbs since surgery.
  8. @Possum220 Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. You’ve kept me sane in times where I thought I would lose it! Thank you for this I really do appreciate you. 🥰 Apparently, fluids should be free flowing and no problem whatsoever but I definitely know something isn’t right as I can take only 5 medium sip swallows at a time before it stops ‘flowing’. It feels like I need to burp but there’s no air to burp. If I do try to burp all the fluid comes back up. Obviously, food is worse so I think the gastro investigation will show something. Otherwise, I don’t know what will happen! Hopefully, next Wednesday I’ll know and fingers crossed there’s a fix. im living off flattened lucozade and sloppy pasta which is not good. I did manage some pistachios chopped and chewed within an inch of their life the other day though! I tried a banana afterwards and it just would not go down. A banana! 😞😞 I’d have thought the pistachios more problematic than a banana but nope! 🤣🤣 I will update you as soon as I know anything from the camera next week. thank you so much again for your support. I can’t express how much you’ve kept me going. love shelley x

I'm absolutely miserable right now. I am nauseated all the time so have to take meds for it. I'm thinking it's meds on an empty stomach. I take Effexor, Multivitamin and Iron plus anything else I need like nausea or pain med. The first 3 are with food and well there's no food really! So for a few days I'm only taking Effexor to see if it helps, plus it's puree time. Not that I even want to eat anymore!

    HELP! I itch everywhere

I had a crazy rash after surgery I still don't know what caused it. It lasted 6 weeks. I now also get this crazy rash on my stomach every now and then again no idea what's causing it and it's only been since surgery it's been happening

    Post-OP Liquids

It’s quite common for our taste buds &/or sense of smell to temporarily change after surgery. Things we enjoyed before can be too sweet, too salty or just taste disgusting. Or it can be an aversion to certain textures or smells. I found the shakes awful after surgery: too sweet, grainy & blah! I’d have one in the morning (diluted) & then had soup for my other ‘meals’. I tried bone broth, which is a good alternative, but found it too salty. It can last a couple of weeks or a couple of months.
  12. I agree with the others: it’s not the cashews. Stalls are a common & important part of your weight loss. It’s when your body shuts down to take stock of your changing needs & then resets things like your metabolism, digestive hormones, etc. They usually last 1-3 weeks. Do look for a lunch that is going to offer more protein (1oz cashews provides only 5g of protein) & includes other foods for a wider variety of nutrients. Try a meat like chicken or tuna, or tofu or a boiled egg, etc. with a small side of salad vegetables, or an omelette, soup, etc. Have a chat with your dietician for some meal ideas
  13. nope - it's not the cashews. You're eating 700 kcal/day, so it's just a stall. Stick to your plan and stay off the scale. It'll eventually break.

    Exercise after surgery

All I've done since surgery is walking. 5-10 minutes, starting out, to help prevent blood clots. Second week I increased my time to 15 then progressively increased it to 30. 7 weeks out I shoot for 5xs a week. I don't push myself to power walk. Just leisurely. Now that the weather is nice, I walk outside instead of on my treadmill. I really enjoy the sunshine. Also, I try to drink/eat protein as soon as I'm done. The "Golden Hour" is within 45-60 minutes immediately after exercise when your muscles absorb nutrients more so than any other time of the day. Eventually I want to start weights and buy a Rogue air bike.

    July 2023 buddies

Hi @LibrarianErin and friends, Im scheduled for July 5th for vsg. How are you? I’m excited more than anything that I have a surgery date and that I’m taking control of my eating habits How's your process going? I still need my pre-op clearance from my primary physician but I’ve completed the nutritional consultations, mental health evaluation and other requirements. What are you excited about for the future? I’m excited to finally take control of my eating habits after over 20 years of yo-yo dieting and falling into unhelpful eating patterns. What are you enjoying now? I’m enjoying following other women’s vsg journey’s on social media and getting all the information I can. How are you talking about the upcoming surgery with family and friends? I was on the fence about sharing my decision with friends and family but I do not regret sharing with those I did, even though 1 person didn’t agree, but they’ve some-what come around. I told my husband (of course), my 3 sisters, 1 of my brothers, my mom and 1 of my best friends and the girl who does my wax🤣 I think I will be more comfortable sharing after the procedure. I don’t want negative vibes prior to the surgery. What supports have been helpful to you? The most helpful supports have been my therapist and family. They know I’m making this decision for my well-being and it was not a decision that I’ve taken lightly. Seeing and hearing about other people’s journeys has also been helpful so I have a realistic idea of what to expect.
  16. One thing that we do during stalls is overthink & blame very normal things for it. This stall was most likley going to happen whether you were eating nuts or lettuce leaves, just stick to your plan & you will see results! I personally only use nuts as a topping as they can be quite calorie dense, but a little bit at a time won't cause much harm especially if they are salt-free (salty ones can however make you retain water weight)

    Post-OP Liquids

This post OP liquids stage is kicking my ass. I'm hitting my 64oz fluid & 60g protein goals & able to handle my daily vitamins, going walking but the taste quality of the fluids is moving downhill QUICK 5/24 I'll be 1 week post op and hopefully will be approved for pureed on Friday I already had applesauce by mistake but it didn't mess me up because I stopped when it hurt at first sip
  18. Nuts are pretty calorie-dense and can cause weight gain if you eat a lot of them, but 1 ounce of cashews is about 160 calories (could be more if they have added ingredients, e.g., honey-roasted) and have no more impact on your weight than 160 calories from any other food. Are you including that in your 700 calories per day or is that in addition? Either way, you are under 1000 calories per day, which is low enough that you will continue to lose weight (especially if you're working out 60-90 minutes per day). Stalls are very common and normal. Weight loss isn't linear. Stick with your program and your weight loss will resume. I'm guessing that BMI is in error. I suspect the weight is meant to be 235 pounds and not 235 kg (518 pounds). While it's possible that she actually weighs 518 pounds, her goal weight of 150 kg (330 pounds) would be unusually high for a goal weight. Still, even at a weight of 235 pounds (BMI of 39), less than 1000 calories per day is well below TDEE.

    What am I doing wrong?

I'm same I'm 10wks out and stalled at 3 stone for weeks. Just won't budge. Back to dietician June 11tb so she might throw an answer at me. Sent from my SM-A515F using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. One ounce of nuts shouldn't stop you losing OP don't worry. We do this to ourselves during stalls - look back at everything to see what's to blame. The fact is stalls just happen and then just stop again. It can be hard to get our brains to accept that though! Hoping yours finishes really soon.

    May 2023 surgeries

Hey y’all I had my 2 week post op on Friday down 13lbs since the surgery. Cleared to eat soft foods for over a week but I have been having a lot of thick saliva or mucus that comes up and I can’t keep my food down. At first if I drink something hot/warm for my last drink before my 30mins it would stay down but now maybe half stays down but the rest comes back up. Is anybody else experiencing this? I’m willing to try anything at this point. Please help🙏🏾
  22. I am really hoping I haven’t been sabotaging myself the last 2 weeks. My program cleared me for nuts so for lunch everyday I was just grabbing a portioned out bag of cashews, 1 ounce. I’m 3 months post op and have been in a stall the last 2 weeks. My calories are around 700 a day and I go to the gym everyday for 60-90 minutes. Could the cashews be preventing me from losing weight? I had thought this was something good for us and now I’m not so sure after having read a little on it. Do you think cashews should go into the category of a once every few weeks treat instead of a lunch option?

3 Days Post Op - Just Documenting My Journey

I also have a similar story. 46 yrs old with heart issues (double bypass in 2018.) Before my surgery, just one month before yours, I was on two blood pressure meds. I stopped taking them the day before surgery and at my first week post op visit my blood pressure was already within normal range without the meds. I was in shock! Especially because my blood pressure was always high, even with the meds!! I have my one month post op visit coming up in 2 days, interested in seeing where I'm at. I also hit the ground running and was walking up to two miles a day after surgery and received the same warnings as you got above... haha! Once I slowed down to let my body heal, the weight started dropping off. 30 pounds down since surgery day. Good Luck! Lots of good advice on here, even though it felt like I was getting scolded sometimes! 🙂

So do we have to keep doing 1oz every 15 minutes or can we go with 2 oz every 30 minutes? Now 1 week post op
  25. BabySpoons

    6 Days Post-Op

First week post op is not a very good indicator of weight loss surgery success. I knew I would be swollen up with IV fluids and inflammation, so I avoided weighing until my first follow up with the doc. I used to be a slave to the scale for many years. When I became morbidly obese I never looked at one. Until I attempted another diet of course. So now... although I wonder if I'm missing the thrill 0f watching the pounds drop off daily during this honeymoon phase, I only weigh once a week. I'm just trying to preserve my sanity. LOL
