    Revision

Hi Jolyn! How did your recovery go? I had an RYN 5.5 years ago and am having a revision done 11/5 due to the same thing. Mary
  2. I'm on day 4 of a 7 day pre-op liquid diet - semi-skimmed milk and any tea, coffee etc - using milk from the allowed amount. I'm not losing much - and as mousecat said, I've had much better results on a very restricted low carb diet in the past. But, I'm just trying to keep it going. My op is on Wednesday! Sleeve - revision from Band!...

    I don't think I'm ready ):

This is a life changing decision that takes time to wrap your brain around. Nothing wrong with wanting to try another path. It took me about 5 years where I was trying the idea on and thinking thru it. I talked to friends and people who had lost 100 lbs with straight diet and exercise, who’d had a lap band the revision to sleeve, plus a couple of normal sleeve. All were honest with me on their struggles, setbacks and what choices they make every day. I’m only at month 6 and the things to stay away from were already not part of my regular diet pre surgery. I don’t really drink alcohol or soda but giving up apple cider now that’s been hard this fall. I’m still wrapping my head around baking and sweets cause I love to bake. Take your time to be sure this is truly what you want.
  4. I had my sleeve to bypass revision in May of this year. My weight loss has been faster and have lost more since revision than with sleeve. 82 pounds down although I lost nothing in month of October. But I have picked up weight lifting more and increased my frequency to the gym.
  5. I have had the band since 2011 and am going to Mexico to Dr IIIan to have it removed and revised to the sleeve. I have had nothing but issues since getting it. I was wondering did you all have issues with the port once it was removed? Like pain in the port area? I am doing as much preparation as possible so I know what to expect My surgery is scheduled Jan9th In Mexico
  6. I had my sleeve in March 2013 Did wonderfully for first 18 months until other health issues consumed my life Since then , I have gained almost all of my weight back I am now approved for a revision to a by pass Have others done this? How was weight loss the second time around? Advice?

    Pre-Op Journey

Hi everyone isn't crazy how its the hardest decision to make. Which surgery would be the best for us. I struggled with that decision up to a few months ago. Orginially I was set to do the sleeve, thinking it would be less invasive, sounds like a simpler operation, easier for surgeon to perform but for me I had done soooo much research and after having my endoscopy, I'm convinced the bypass would ultimately be my better choice. I had some low grade inflammation in my stomach which I feel could eventually cause bad acid reflux disease. I had BAD acid reflux before don't want to live with it. Again there is so many people who have done the sleeve and not experience any issues with reflux and have had a lot of success and maintain healthier weight. Its my opinion I've read some really bad horror stories about lap band and lots of revisions which are harder to achieve weight loss and complications after 2nd surgery. I'm just saying really research before considering lap band. As for insurance and out of pocket expense, some hospitals have programs that will adjust depending on your income. Hopefully you'll have some kinda help. so my surgery is 11/15 bypass yep its happening crazy time flys

    Requirements to be a VET

Charge the date of your surgery to the original date 9 years ago. If you want to, put the date of your revision into your sig.

    Pre-Op Journey

There are members here with the sleeve that have been successful. There are also members that have had revisions. Either due to issues with the band or the band just not working for them. Searching the forum and reading other's experiences will surely be beneficial. The only personal experience I have is my brother having it some time back and although he lost "some" weight at the very beginning it never really worked for him. He still has it but has recently been talking about having a revision. I stayed away from the thought of WLS for many years because I knew nothing other than the band and thought of it as a gimmick for surgeons to get the $$ from insurances. This process is very mental so be sure to get yourself ready there. Ultimately you have to make the best decision for you. GOOD LUCK and ENJOY!!!!!

Is one week off work enough?

I would not recommend only a week off. For so many reasons. I took 2 full months off for my lap band, and 2 full months off for my revision to bypass. VERY glad I did!

I agree. I always try to be kind and helpful. I would certainly never turn round and say to someone that the reason they need a revision is because they drink so much! There is always a degree of interpretation when things are posted on the net and sometimes things don't come across the way they are intended. I think it's pretty hard to misinterpret this though!
  12. So according to the VET forum you can only post if you are 18 months post surgery. However when you are 9 years post surgery but awaiting a revision you can't post. This seems silly. Yes I'm a novice when it comes to RNY but I still have plenty of other useful advice . Maybe someone needs to look at changing this

Apparently I'm the perfect example of why people shouldn't drink! I'd better get dressed and go and find my local AA now! the most ironic thing is the user that posted this has herself had a revision!

    "Other " support sites

This is a rant and a rave. Firstly I would like to say that I have always found the people here to be in the most part helpful and supportive. The same cannot be said for all other sites. Some of the sanctimonious BS from some peeps is unreal. Example Wow reading this thread is depressing. So many people saying never to drink alcohol again. Absolutes ( never )are very hard to accept. I got my band 9 years ago and was never told I had to give up alcohol. I enjoy a glass or 2 of wine a couple of times a week. Maybe I'm lucky I didn't become an alcoholic! Now looking at revising to RNY so I understand that I am going to have to give that up, at least for the foreseeable future but I would hate to think that I could NEVER have a glass of wine again. alcohol is pure sugar. The body uses that pure sugar to function instead of burning your stored fat for energy. Maybe ifvyou had not used alcohol you would be at goal weight and not looking for a revision. You are a perfect example of the truth of what those who are saying about alcohol use are saying. Alcoholics and drug abusers in recovery use the never absolute every day. They have to, no other choice. Not using absolutes, like never is often just an excuse.

    Revision from sleeve to bypass

Of course! By all means if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Did you get a surgery date yet for your revision?

    Revision from sleeve to bypass

Yes- i did! I had my revision friday and i feel freaking amazing!!! I’m wishing you all the best of luck. I was in the same boat as you in the sense that i workout hard core religiously 5 days per week and i’m like the poster child in my local area for how to eat post op, but even i had severe reflux. Shit happens. It got to the point where i honestly didn’t even care if i drank sparkling water because i ended up with reflux anyway by avoiding that. So i did not have bypass, i had the one anastomosis bypass which is different. It’s rare and i’m actually literally the first person in my state to even have that done. So we’ll see how it compares, but so far i can say that it is definitely very very different from my sleeve. You will be so much happier once the reflux goes away. All the best to you.

    Revision from sleeve to bypass

Good to hear. What kind of revision? I thought the bypass was it? Sent from my SM-G960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. Kathy, It will get better. I had gastric bypass 14 years ago. Everything I liked before surgery (eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese) I couldn't eat at all after surgery. Eventually the taste for it came back. Unfortunately 3 years ago my mom passed away and I've been gaining the weight back. I'm scheduled next month for a revision. I'm kinda nervous, my last surgery was in a different state and with a different surgeon. This surgeon is great, did my sister-in-law's sleeve. There are a lot more "rules" and steps than when I had it done the first time Hope all goes well. I'm missing out on too much with my children and grandchildren - time to get my life back!
  19. I had the same issue as you. After 7 years with the sleeve, I wasn’t losing weight and lost only 20 something pounds. I developed GERD & had my bypass revision this past May. I am now the lowest I have ever been in my adult life and have about 35-40 more pounds to lose. I am almost 6 months post op and lost 82 pounds. good luck to you!

    Rny vs sleeve

I am RNY for several reasons, severe reflux, HBP, sleep apnea, severe arthritis since 25, and I wanted the quickest way to lose weight. I decided the RNY would work best for me, did not want to throw away 3/4 of my stomach, so I have a turkey-egg stomach instead of one some have described a banana but my search leads me to believe a garden hose just wouldn't do me. My surgeon didn't even ask or sway my thinking. When I announced I wanted a bypass he said I was making a wise choice. Would he have tried talking me into a sleeve, doubt it, at 72 I didn't feel I had enough Life Time to revise later, so since I wanted the Gold Medal surgery, I chose the best, if they were issued medals he would wear a Big Gold one. Chief of Baraiatric Surgery and Metabolic Weight loss, full professor in College of Medicine, trained many now-successful Bariatric surgeon's in the MidWest and God only knows where else. But he also is a very nice person. My son and I are very close, my middle child, his older brother died at 31 suddenly in 2008, my Husband died 4th of July 6 years ago. So we still live together, I go to his appointments, he comes to mine. We always band together. Well at my presurgery meeting with my Dr Needleman, he did something that impressed me greatly. He came over, shook my son's hand said " I promise to take very good care of your Mother" he was sensitive to enough to reassure my 👦. And he has treated me wonderful. If I had become a doctor, which had always been my dream, I would have been happy to be even an 1/8th as good, as he was and is. And the blip in recovery I am experiencing? Couldn't have been, planned for but they know how to repair it. And I believe in them, and. that helps.
  21. The last case i picked up was really thick and I haven’t been drinking them bc I was thinking there was something wrong with that batch. Interested to hear what others are thinking. Thx for posting this! Band to sleeve revision surgery 1/16/17 HW: 283 CW: 171 GW: 160

    Rny vs sleeve

My doctor is the one that suggested the sleeve would be better for me. I was also worried with the malabsorption with the bypass. I had reflux before surgery but not that bad, so I took a chance with the sleeve. I have a friend that had to get the revision because of the reflux. So far, I'm happy with what I've had. And just like you, I had heard a lot of horror stories with the lap band. I have a friend from high school that got it and she lost a good amount of weight, but she doesn't have the restriction and eats EVERYTHING and sometimes she'll get sick, but she's gained a lot back. I know that these are all just tools and we still have to do our work.

    Rny vs sleeve

I think it is hard for anyone to give an objective answer on this because most people haven't had both. Those who have will have been revising from another surgery so that will skew their opinion as well. Some things to consider. Sleeve Is a restrictive only procedure, apparently there is a quite high risk of reflux,it cannot be reversed but it is possible to revise to a DS bypass. Bypass Is restrictive and malabsorptive, risk of reflux seems to be very low, certain foods e.g alcohol and sugar may cause dumping. It can be reversed if necessary but this is complicated.
