Dreaded hair loss - question
Queen ApisM replied to Crinkles's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've lost a ton of hair, but it is thinning and not bald patches. It is noticeable to me and my hair stylist, but not to most people. I think the visible impact depends a lot on what your hair situation is going into surgery. I had very thick hair, so while it is now thinner (and obviously so to me, especially when I notice how oily my hair gets after not washing it for a few days and also when I am putting it in a ponytail) most people can't tell. I'm now about 7 months out and the hair loss has slowed. I just got 6 inches cut off the ends to bring it to my shoulders, and it looks really nice. So, there is a lot you can do to help with volume with a different cut, if that is a concern. My stylist confirmed that new growth is coming in at the roots again, because it is thicker there than at the mid-shaft and ends. A plus side? The new shorter length and thinner face has people commenting on how much younger I look. I'll take that! just edited to add: I always met my protein, food, vitamin, and fluid goals from the beginning, so you can do all the right things and have hair loss. It is luck of the draw, I think. -
I am a year out and I never had any hair loss. I was lucky and able to meet my fluid and protein goals from the very beginning. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Dreaded hair loss - question

I'm dreading this part too! I adore my long, curly hair. And I'm trying to decide if I should just go ahead and cut it now so maybe it won't look so bad when it does thin out. I didn't have hair loss with the Lap Band. -
Dreaded hair loss - question

It is massively variable from person to person. My hair started thinning right at the 3 month post-op mark. I'm almost 6 months out now and it has slowed down some, but definitely has not stopped. I don't have any bald spots, but the thinning is VERY noticeable to me, but my family says its not visible to them. You can't control it, you can only do your very best to take care of yourself, heal well, and make sure you get adequate nutrition to prevent nutritional hair loss on top of the telogen effluvium. -

VSG was on 9/21/21. I'm right there with all of you, in that the loss has slowed down just a bit. But, I completely agree with @LizzieD, sticking to the basics and really focusing on incremental improvements has kept me on track. I'm really pleased with where I am, though I still have probably 40lbs to go before I'd be really content. Every day I just remind myself that I can only take it one day at a time! -

LOL yea youtube has sooooo many great videos. So many people post their weight loss surgery journey on there from pre op, even the surgery and right after the surgery and so on. Very fun to watch the differences between each person. -

Sleeved 12/22 and don't have hair loss (I'm older as well). Good luck. -
Hi all, I am still pre op - my date is April 2nd... I have accepted that a period of hair loss is heading my way and that's part of the parcel that comes with the sleeve. That said... is it just hair thinning or do some people have bald patches? Thank you Shelley

It's still falling more than I would consider normal BUT I have lots of new growth. I don't think it something you can avoid if your hair is going to thin out it will. Everyone is different in how their body reacts to surgery I had a really rough time mentally and I guess physically as I just didn't have to strength or motivation to do anything I ended up having 9 weeks off work. So I had a deep seated regret after the surgery which lasted about 4 months but I am ok now 8 months out. -
Wonderful progress! How much did you lose in 3 months before surgery? Losses in excess of 4lb per week won't be just fat loss and "stalls" while eating below replacement calories are stalls of weight and not fat loss. Scales are evil. Just my 2c.

Sleeve or Bypass? Confused
SleevedK replied to GinSunflowers's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
While it is indeed standard practice to repair hiatal hernias with a gastric sleeve operation, I don't think any doctor can guarantee you that your hiatal hernia will never come back. The things I've read indicate that the gastric sleeve seems to make your stomach MORE likely to herniate (since a sleeved stomach is narrower and therefore can slide up through the diaphragm hiatus more easily than a normal stomach). I know for a fact that there are some gastric sleeve patients who have had multiple hiatal hernia repairs after the surgery (and others who were told to convert to a bypass because of their hernias). As far as the acid reflux issue, worse acid reflux is a known risk of the gastric sleeve. Some people are lucky and have no issues, but others do develop acid reflux for the first time after the sleeve or have much worse acid reflux after the sleeve. I would definitely ask him about why he thinks that this is not a concern in your situation and what his plan would be for how to deal with it if your acid reflux does get worse after the surgery. (If he tells you that you would just take a PPI for the acid if it gets worse after surgery, keep in mind that PPIs are not enough to control the acid for some people who have really bad acid reflux after the sleeve). You are smart to be thinking about these issues before your surgery. Personally, I deal with both acid reflux and a hiatal hernia after the sleeve (and no I didn't have a hiatal hernia before the sleeve - they looked for it when they did the sleeve). Knowing what I know now, I never would have gotten the sleeve. I think the bypass has stood the test of time better than the sleeve has - after decades of experience with the bypass, surgeons know the risks of the bypass and are better at managing them, whereas problems with the sleeve are often handled by just converting over to the bypass anyway. Just look at all the stories on the revision forum about people converting from sleeve to bypass because of sleeve problems: https://www.bariatricpal.com/forum/1302-revision-weight-loss-surgery-forums-new/ -

The hair loss generally lasts about three months. This is the same for the people who didn’t take supplements like biotin & those who did. The hair you’ll lose is already dead & would have been shed anyway. The stress of the surgery & weight loss accelerate your natural hair loss cycle but your natural hair regrowth remains unchanged. So while you’re losing hair, you’re still growing new hair. It is only the new hair that may benefit from any supplements. During the first month you often feel weak, have low energy, experience some brain fog & shorter concentration spans. But we are all different in our recovery. A friend was back at work after a week no issue. Another took three weeks. Me, I still struggled after 4 weeks but my BP was very low (but that is my normal). -
Did your comorbidities go away after surgery?

My cholesterol went up too & I was also told it was because of the weight loss. They still kept their eye in it. It was back within my usual range of about 5 (had been that for decades regardless of diet or weight) once my weight stabilised. Now it’s low 4s. The back pain & other body aches are also related to your weight loss. Your body is getting used to holding itself differently. Before it was compensating for the weight you were carrying. Now it’s relearning how to stand up straight again. A friend go also had surgery & I often joke about how we still slouch a bit. We don’t have a large tummy to prop us up anymore. 😆 I also had back pain until I bought myself some new bras that fit my smaller breasts - made a big difference. -

Thanks I'll look in to that. I'm a hairstylist and we always suggest biotin. I didn't really know anything else worked for just hair. -
When am I gonna lose some freaking weight?!?!
ShoppGirl replied to lori's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I know that weight loss with revision is typically slower and somewhat less. Also if you weigh less on surgery day your loss will be less because you don’t have as much to lose. -

I'm in Amarillo with Dr. Blue Schniederjan from Panhandle Weight Loss Clinic. Yes, can't wait until my surgery date. I could have gotten mine done earlier too, but I had to pass my cardiac test also. I had blood clots, but I finally passed the test and got my surgery date. So excited. Sorry you had to postpone yours. But, now I have a fellow Texan bariatric buddy that we can talk to going through this together. It will get here sooner than we think. -

Hey. I had my surgery in Sept too. My weight loss has slowed quite a bit and at one point it stalled. What I found is that even though I didn't think I was, I was eating more than I had been and drinking more. My body had finally gotten used to the new stomach and I think adjusted itself. So I went back to the basics.... Making sure I had the correct portion sizes, weighing my food/snacks, drinking zero calorie drinks,I also added in weight lifting. Everytime I hit what I think is going to turn into a stall I retrace my steps and also add just a little (and I mean a little) more activity/exercise into my routine. I also make sure that if I'm only going to eat a little it's protein. Also, I remind myself that I'm trying to maintain my muscle and build more while losing fat so if I've lost a lot of fat since surgery it makes sense that the further out I go, the less there is to loose and the longer maybe harder it will take. You will get out of your stalls I promise! -

Has your hair stopped thinning out now? I've started taking high dose of biotin and a good multi vitamin. I'm hoping that getting it in my system before surgery will help. That might be wishful thinking. I'm coming home the same day as surgery and my dr said I could go back to work in a week but I planning on being off 2 weeks. When you say the first 4 weeks were the worse. What do you mean? -
I'm 3.5 months out and two inches taller than you, and I've been averaging -10 pounds a month. My 3-month checkup was last week, and my NP was very happy with my progress. As others have said, your starting weight will make a difference. Any loss is good loss; sometimes it'll be slow, sometimes it'll go faster. It's mostly about whatever your medical team says is healthy. I'm happy with my rate: I won't be able to avoid loose skin entirely, but I'm hoping to minimize it!

My cholesterol went up immediately postop to a little bit to where he told me to watch it and the surgeons office told me to take fish oil but someone on here said it could have to do with the rapid weight loss somehow. I haven’t verified that with a doctor yet but they must’ve heard that somewhereI haven’t verified that with a doctor yet but they must’ve heard that somewhere -

I had silent reflux before surgery and had the sleeve. like you I didn't take meds daily but sometimes I needed to up my dosage and take Gaviscon, now I take 20mg nexium daily (only because I am to scared to come off them yet) and haven't had any reflux symptoms. I was the same the first 4 months were the worst then at 6 months i started to feel happy about the whole thing. the hardest thing I am coping with is hair loss mainly because my hair was a prominent feature of mine. -
Mine too!! I have lost over 50% but thankfully I had a lot to start with. It was down to the top of my butt and i have had half the length cut off now and it feels so weird and as you describe Fairy Floss ( Cotton Candy) and so "fly away" just wondering how yours is now. I can see lots of new growth but I don't know if that's from breakage from my last hair appointment (Foiling) or if its real re-growth. Has the texture of your hair improved ?

Only 22lbs lost 2 months post op - what is happening?
Tony B - NJ replied to Zerofuckstogive70's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am sure you did it without knowing. There are a lot of foods built into these reccomendations that are carb heavy to avoid. Most obvious is bread. I am sure you did not consume the same amount of bread before and after the surgery. Bread is the #1 enemy when it comes to carbs. Same with pasta and rice. Most weight loss plans eliminate these or replace with different types like soy, chickpea, lentil etc.
