Adding Calories to Diet Correctly
Kindle replied to Nugget's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never measured or tracked my food or counted calories, so I can't give you numbers. But When I reached my surgeons goal I started adding calories in the form of more fat and carbs. I was already pretty maxed out on protein calories. Switched from skim to 2% milk. Regular Greek yogurt instead of 0% fat. Switched from PB2 to real peanut butter. Ate more fruit. Traded a couple protein bars for some whole grain Kind and Ancient Grain bars. Started adding Kashi Go Lean cereal to my Greek yogurt. I ended up losing another 22 pounds, which was 12 pounds below my personal goal. I was actually getting a little annoyed because I didn't want to have to buy MORE clothes in a smaller size. But finally my body just stopped losing when it stopped and I've easily maintained within 4-5 pounds of my lowest weight for over 14 months. I would have been happy even 20 pounds heavier if that's where my body wanted to be. It's just a matter of figuring out what you are happy eating and what kind of lifestyle you are willing to maintain long term. Maintenance is boring, so you gotta like what you do. -
Returning to Work... What Should I Bring to Eat
Wheetsin replied to Losing 2's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On the Protein Shakes, add things to make them treats. I enjoyed chocolate powder with a tbl of Peanut Butter whizzed up in it. Or chocolate powder, SF Kahlua syrup and ice - nicely close to a mudslide. Or vanilla powder made with half OJ, half milk, and a packet of sweetner of choice. Or matcha powder and SF frozen yogurt. Or vanilla poweder with fresh berries (all whizzed up, of course). Much more satisfying than the standard Protein Drink, and something I often looked forward to. Take your eggs and make egg salad. Mmm. Ask if you can have refried Beans. Usually around the time you can have eggs, you can also have beans. A nice bowl of beans with sour cream, cheese, salsa verde -- yum. I eat tofu a few times a week. One of my fav ways to have it is Thai style. Marinate it at least 24 hours in a combo of OJ, brown sugar, sesame oil, spicy peanut sauce, honey, chili paste and ginger. Then just cook on a hot non-stick gridle or pan. Carmelize the remaining marinade & serve over the tofu. A tip for tofu - this throws everyone (who is new to tofu) off. Do not buy "silken" tofu, even if it says "silken firm". It's soft, designed to be more of a dairy substitute than an eat-alone item. If you want to cook it like a piece of meat, buy extra firm and press it on paper towels (using weights if you have time) to get as much of the water out, but make sure you're working with a kind that doesn't say "silken". If you hcan have tuna, then tuna, mayo, white/northern beans, white vinegar, red onion and a pinch of rosemary is the perfect lunch. Or make regular tuna (the cheapo can kind has more protein than the premium white albacore in a pouch, usually) salad, put it on a nonstick pan and "fry" it up, then top with cheddar & let melt. Like a breadless tuna melt. If you're on the go, the smaller size of tuna pouches, a few packs of condiment mayo, and a plastic fork is all you need. One of my fav travel/on the go meals -- buy turkey pepperoni. Microwave it on paper towels until it stops sizzling, but isn't burning... about 3 min in my microwave. As soon as it comes out, blot it dry with more paper towels and let them cool. The fat will cook out (they're low fat to begin with, high protein) and you'll be left with a very crunchy pepperoni "chip". Very tasty with some garden veggie cream cheese, or cottage cheese. Hope this helps. -
I was banded on May 4. Is it suppose to be difficult/painful to get anything down? Even water? I can't eat anything more than a couple of bites of yogurt or a couple small sips of my shake. Is this normal? When will I be able to get liquides/soft food down with no pain?

Need Ideas

How about yogurt? Or some refried Beans? Your body is adjusting that is why the scale suddenly stops. 21 pounds in 10 days is a lot of weight to lose. It'll pick up soon enough. I think a lot of us go through this but eventually it evens out. -
Looking for some non-judgmental feedback
Jachut replied to Sassy Pants's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think the thing is people get frustrated. You're right, if you really could control your eating you wouldnt have needed the surgery. But if surgery and the possiblility of mucking it up isnt enough to keep you on the straight and narrow, I really dont know what anyone can say to you. Everyone goes through it, true, but really, how committed were you? Were you ready for this? That's not judgemental but for heaven's sake, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and get back on the program. Support is not going to come in the guise of people validating what you're doing. That does you absolutely not good. Support comes from people suggesting what you can do to make this easier. Just becuase you're on liquids is no reason you have to starve. Liquids can be calorific, contain fat and Protein and keep your body going. Make yourself some Soup with real meat and some Pasta in it, for example, blend it up really well, thin it out with broth to a consistency you can handle now, and have as much of it as you can handle at a time, as often as you need not to be hungry. Make a real smoothie with real fruit, yogurt and milk rather than a Protein shake, get some fibre into yourself to feel some satisfaction. You can even blend up family dinners with broth to get the flavour or real food - NO food is off limits, just in solid form! There. There is no reason to go hungry. And as for "wanting to chew something" as so many people say, you just have to suck it up. Its only a couple of weeks. -
Any other teachers being banded!?
lsullivan68 replied to MIGMOM's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I'm a high school librarian, but taught for 9 years in the classroom. I was banded on 8-1-08 and started work yesterday. I'm doing the liquids still right now, but lunch time is our busiest time of the day, so I'm going to have to do easy, smooth things like yogurt, cheese, shakes, etc. Because like DWRD73 said, we don't want to "you know" in front of the kids. We'll do it, heck we've all survived NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND, we'll survive this too. : ) -

mynewlife86 replied to Lovinglapbandliving's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
yes yesterday was hard! I was starving but I embraced what I read about "drink as much as you want" lol I was drinking all day! I had slim fast shakes, muscle milk, crystal light, broth, soup, a latte and last night I was really feeling deprived so I scooped some frozen yogurt into the blender with some ensure. That's liquid right?! lol Today has been easier and I've actually toyed with the idea of doing another liquid day. I think it's really breaking my grazing habit well maybe not "breakig it" but it's making me realize how often I want to stick food in my mouth! and I'm really feeling again what hunger feels like! good luck to you!!! yes stock up and remember you can have all the liquids you want  -
What are y'all eating..I'm eating creamy liquids..yogurt..cream of everything..imbready for more!!!!!!..I want tuna!!!! I want mashed potatoes..my surgeon. I'm really irritable now..on liquids..I am 9 days out but feel I'm ready..I never am nasious ..never had any issues with anything I have tries

Any other teachers being banded!?
Jachut replied to MIGMOM's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Ah yes. I'm a student teacher, but am at the stage where I'm out on teaching rounds a LOT now, so working a good part of the academic school year. I take very easy things to eat because its always rushed. I eat well at home int he morning - I have two sittings at breakfast, lol. First when I get up I'll get some Cereal and a coffee down, that travels around the house with me, while I'm showering, doing my hair, dressing the kids, etc. An hour or so later when I leave to do the school drop off of my kids and head on myself, I'll take some fruit and a piece of toast with me. That way if all I have for lunch is yogurt or some cheese and crackers, I've eaten well in the morning.then its an afternoon snack of something healthy which can be more leisurely. And dinner as normal. personally I'd rather be fat than live on Protein shakes and bars, I dont consider them food or a viable option at all for me. This large breakfast snack lunch doesnt fit my normal three meals a day routine, but I'll have to adapt when I'm finished studying and am working full time. -

The Syntrax Nectar Roadside Lemonade was my saving grace too! I couldn't stomach the "milky" shakes. I added a packet of Crystal Light lemonade to give it an extra punch of flavor. Drink it over ice too. I also add the Syntrax Lemonade to plain Fage yogurt. It kind of tastes like a lemon cheesecake filling or custard. Yum. -
I've noticed something and I can't quite figure it out. Every AM (usually around 7) for breakfast I have a protein shake (Syntrax Nectar) in which I add - Greek yogurt, 1 c. almond milk, 1 Del-Monte fruit cup. I blend and then sip (yes still this is a challenge). This keeps me full all AM (even through my commute where I walk and stand a lot). Usually by the time I feel hungry it is between 12:15 - 12:30 PM. However, I've tried having the same thing for lunch and it is a no go. If I have the shake for lunch (12:30 PM) I am literally starving by 3 PM. I'm not sure why this doesn't keep me full in the afternoon. I'd like to get to the point where I can do 2 shakes and a small dinner. I like the feeling after the shake (feel satisfied but not weighed down) but it is such a no go twice in one day. Anyone experience this? Any suggestions? I'm not trying to do this every day, but on my busy days I just don't always have time for a full sit down lunch.

Protein Shakes & Feeling Full
melinda48 commented on TwinsMama's blog entry in Learning to be a Type A-
How many carbs are in the shake after you add the fruit, yogurt etc...Maybe that particular mixture has a little to much sugar? I know I'm that way as far as if I eat anything early in the day that has too much sugar, I'm starving by 1 or 2. -
Foods you no longer enjoy
hmills653 replied to MerryMarie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So far I'm able to eat anything but finds that sweets aren't as satisfying anymore, not that I'm jumping on that bandwagon this soon but like my husband wanted ice cream did I got one scoop of frozen yogurt and it was like ehhh. Wasn't worth my calorie intake. I used to be a carb and sweets gal. My new thing now is, when you get to the cheese center of your danish I'll take a little bite. Once again not planning on making this a habit but sometimes it's hard to sit and watch everyone else eat it but I know that I didn't have this surgery to eat desserts all day lol. -
At my goal weight a week away from 7 months post-op
FluffyChix replied to AlteredReality's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Wow! Congrats girlie!!! That's amazing and fantastic success!!! I agree with everything that has been said. The body dysmorphia issue is a big one in my opinion! It took looking at monthly photos to understand the changes in my body. I still see myself as bigger than I am. As @Healthy_life said, have someone compare you to people out in public. I'm always amazed when I ask Mr. F. to do that and I see the people he picks! Keep doing what you're doing. I think you will know when you get to the weight where you need to be. The fat redistributes after about a year. So you won't look like "a bag of bones." Also, to stop losing, start adding healthy fats into your diet. They take very little extra space, and yet will add calories very quickly. Use full fat items like Greek Yogurt, salad dressings, avocado, butter, olives, olive oil, nuts/seeds/nut butters. It's super easy to get 200-400 extra cals in just from upping fats a little bit! That isn't even huge servings either! -

Help, 7 weeks out need low carb meal ideas
Shan replied to Ibejjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat lots of chicken...baked, chicken parmesan, chicken salad, chicken teriyaki, etc I also eat quite a bit of lean ground beef in the form of burgers with spinach, avocado, cheese, spinach and pickles (no bun), chili with lots of veg, meatloaf, taco salad with ground beef cooked with taco seasoning, lettuce, spinach, avocado, salsa and whatever lowfat dressing I want(no shell, just a bowl). I eat tuna at least twice a week with some lowfat miracle whip, and celery in it...sometimes with a few crackers, sometimes not. I eat eggs and egg whites in the form of omelets, scrambled, and hard boiled. I found a Protein supplement called nectar that I really like. I get the strawberry mousse flavor, and blend it up with Water, two frozen strawberries and a little stevia. Then I top it with sugar free whipped cream. Quite tasty. I eat a ton of cottage cheese with strawberries, blueberries and a bit of stevia. I also keep a variety of lowfat cheeses around to grab when I'm in a hurry. I eat Peanut Butter or almond butter as a treat. Sometimes if I'm dying for a goody, I put two dark chocolate chips in my tablespoon of peanut butter. Another time I was dying for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but obviously bread and jelly aren't great options. I just took a tablespoon of Peanut Butter and threw in five or six blueberries. Got rid of the craving and it was a perfectly acceptable snack. I keep small packs of beef Jerky around for the times that I really have to run, but have forgotten to eat, which happens often since surgery. It does have a lot of sodium and nitrates so you have to be careful with that, but if you really need a high protein snack...it'll pack a punch at around 15 grams an ounce. Organic is also an option if you're worried about nitrates or hormones in your meat. I also eat a lot of greek yogurt. I used to eat the DELICIOUS fruited varieties, but they can have a lot of sugar. Now I eat the no fat, plain kind and add my own fruit and stevia. There really are a lot of options out there once you get the hang of it, but it is so hard in the beginning when your stomach is picky and nothing really tastes all that great. This blog has been mentioned on here a ton and for good reason...it is PACKED with great ideas. Just browse through and you'll find a ton of high protein recipes for everything from casseroles to Protein shakes, to protein ice cream. Great resource. http://theworldaccor...e.blogspot.com/ -
Advice on Pain Meds-Tylenol

As several people above mentioned you are not so much feeling your band as you are feeling "full" in that area and perhaps even more than a bit sore right now. These early months are all about healing you did have major surgery ya know So take it easy and use the time to practice all the good band eating habits and start adding in some exercise by increasing your walking taking it slow and steady. Try to make good choices in the items you eat, and if you are still on mushy foods don't lean towards things like ice cream and chocolate. Steer toward sugar free ices, yogurt, turkey chili, and some hearty Soups you can blend up. You want to keep the Protein high and the carbs and sugar low. This will help with losing weight as well as help you making choices of what to eat and not eat for fueling your body. Take at least 20 minutes no more and no less to eat your meals. Sit and enjoy the food and try not to mulit task while eating if you can help it. If you are eating past 20 minutes you are eating into your next meal, if you are finishing your food before 20 minutes slow down. Practice getting in all your Water for the day, if your drinking your not eating...and if your hungry try drinking some water first and then waiting 30 minutes before going to that snack or next meal if it's been less than 3-4 hours since you last ate So many tips and tricks that will help you as you get your band filled that you can put into practice now and all these will help with the ultimate goal of losing weight and getting healthy!

Does your stomach feel normal?
Taylor5 replied to logicwand's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I buy the Bariatric Fusion meal replacement powder. It is intended/sold as an actual meal replacement product - i.e. just add water and that's your meal, but I started out getting it because they sell it in single serving packets and I wanted to try something without spending $40 or more on a huge tub, in case it tasted awful. I figured out that each tablespoon of it has 7 grams of protein (I figured out all the macros for my food journal, but don't remember off the top of my head). At first I just added one tbs to various things to test out the texture/flavor. I put it in Vitamin Water and while it didn't add a texture or different flavor, I feel like it may have made it taste a little sweeter or something - I'm not exactly sure but I didn't like it. But I can add it to literally everything else - yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, homemade frozen protein pops & fruit pops, and it has no added flavor or texture to me whatsoever, and being up to 3 tbs per serving, has really made it easier to get my protein in. I'm buying it by the tub now. Everyone is different, but I highly recommend it. -
Albany GA bandsters - speak up...
georgia girl replied to abckids's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Hang in there Mia, I know exactly how you feel! I went through the same thing. I promise you, it will get better. You're on mushies right? Try to eat foods that will stay with you like oatmeal for breakfast, or canned tuna or chicken (very finely chopped). Stuff like mashed potatoes, pudding, and yogurt go down easily, but they don't stay with you very long. Remember protein, protein, protein! Try to keep active too, that will help burn calories. You probably just need to walk since you're still healing. It's going to be hard until you get some decent restriction, but I know you can do it! -
I only have to do the diet one week before. I started Sunday with modified liquids. I'm allowed only veggies and plain warm cereals, protein drinks, jello/ Popsicles and plain yogurt. It's very boring but I've come to realize I don't need tht much food to function. What's the sugar buster diet?

Can we swallow capsules??
JackieOMonroe replied to Tamz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is only slightly related to the post, but I have a tiny bump on one of my incisions that looks kind of like a pimple, only without the pimply stuff inside of it. It's been itching, so today I decided to give it a closer look. I noticed that it felt like something scratchy was barely poking out of it, but it didn't look like anything was sticking out. I used a pair of tweezers on it to pull at the invisible scratchy thing and it turned out to be a piece of clear, unabsorbed stitch! No more itching. I'm glad that it's gone because it's been causing that incision to heal more poorly than the rest. That scar is visibly raised while the others are much more flat. I started with Scar Away Patches today to hopefully get them to fade a bit. /CSB Oh, and to answer the question about capsules... my doctor had me take them apart for the first two weeks and mix the insides in a little applesauce or yogurt. Now I can swallow them just fine so I swallow them. -
I'm not sure there is one. My doctor allows both immediately following surgery--and he is super strict about things (ie, no yogurt or pudding allowed during full liquid, strict rules about drinking calories, had to strain (not just puree) soups during full liquids--etc). I would always follow what your own surgeon says, but this was my experience. Before surgery, I only drank coffee on weekends bc sometimes it would give me diarrhea (TMI?) but now I am soooo grateful for it bc it helps keep me regular.
