It sounds like everyone is doing really awesome. To answer your vitamin question- I take 1 multivitamin twice a day and 1 500mg calcium citrate three times a day when I'm behaving myself. They are all chewable, and are bariatric advantage brand.

All of my friends have been kind and supportive. I told my closest friends just about a week before surgery, and then gradually told others as it came up. The only person who was the slightest bit mean about it was a work colleague who is just a mean person sometimes. Anyway, I have to say that the slender folks among my friends and family were the most supportive and enthusiastic. Maybe because they really understand how much I was missing from life by being morbidly obese. As far as being angry with yourself about not being able to lose weight by diet and exercise alone, let that go. Obesity is influenced by many more factors than just diet and exercise, and once you get there, it is almost impossible for anyone to reach a normal weight without surgery. This recent study looked at obese people trying to lose weight -- bariatric surgery patients excluded -- and found that the odds of attaining and maintaining a normal body weight were astronomically tiny, like maybe the same as being struck by lighting or something. http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.2105/AJPH.2015.302773 In my opinion, if someone's medical team agrees that they are a good candidate for bariatric surgery, then that is probably the smartest thing to do. I don't kick myself for not being able to lose weight "on my own." I kick myself for trying, for decades, to do it without the best medical treatment and refusing to consider surgery. Anyway, my social life has improved dramatically since I've lost weight. I'm more willing to go out and socialize and try new things. I enjoy talking to people instead of being focused on shoving food in my face. I'm still an introvert and always will be, but now I'm much more at ease in social settings and happier overall. That makes me a better friend. Good luck to you!

You can google meal plans for after bariatric surgery. Put together your own plan staying high Protein and low carb. It shouldn't be very hard to do. -

My doctor/nutritionist do not want me to ever eat any product that contains yeast. Not sure why yeast specifically, but I know they do not want me to have most breads and similar products. They also do not want me to have any rice and only limited portions of wheat pasta. I CAN however eat 6-10 whole wheat crackers, so I am using that as my "bread". I think I am going to just have to do my best to do a mostly keto"ish" diet. I also just ordered cheese crisps to substitute crackers and add a little protein in their place. Not sure how I will like those yet. Ordered a variety so maybe I can find something tasty. Pre-packaged food: I am going to do my best to avoid all processed pre-packaged food. It usually isn't very healthy for you. But, if I do need something quick and easy I am not opposed to using them occasionally. But instead of frozen meals, I will try to get some fresher versions from local delis. Haven't tried the bariatric site meals, but I did buy some bariatric soups for after surgery. -
Had my surgery back in September and all is well (39 pounds lost). But I have the liquid diet stuff taking up room in my cupboards- would like to sell Vanilla Creme Bariatrix essentials by metagenics - bariatric meal, vanilla advanced protein powder and endura energy and rehydration formula. Each container 1/3 to 1/2 full. Should get you through the liquid phase no problem. $40 for all. Send a message if you are interested. I'm in downtown Toronto, very close to the TLBC centre.

Curve ball 101----big curve ball!!!!!!!!!
HeatherO replied to Don's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also think the band sounds better when you don't have too much to lose. I don't know how tall you are but I would imagine you have less than 100 pounds to lose to get to a normal BMI. It is so much less stress on the body. Another way to look at it is by reviewing your eating habits. If you are a chronic overeater at meal times, banding may be the best choice. If you are a sweetaholic or primarily eat junk food, then R&Y might have the added benefit of the "dumping" syndrome which might cause you to lose the desire to eat sweets if you get exceedingly sick when you do. Also keep in mind that doctors have their preferences as well. Some doctors favor one surgery over the other in most cases. Your doctor could be biased one way or the other and it is helpful to keep this in mind. Ask your doctor why they prefer one over the other in your particular case to see if it makes sense to you . . . after all, it is your ultimate decision. If you can get cardiac clearance and bariatric surgery would be considered relatively safe from your doctors perspective, I think you would still benefit from taking off the weight. Any excess weight is a strain on your heart. Weight loss with a healthy diet and doctor approved exercise may prolong and enhance your life considerably. -

The psychologist that I went and saw wrote a summary to my surgeon about my visit. I had to take this MMP1 (something like that) 500 question true false exam. I marked true on a lot of questions such as I have low self esteem. This is due to my weight but you can't explain that. Now the letter is summarized with "I recommend bariatric surgery with reservation" and that he recommend that I see a psychologist. Do you think this will make me exempt from UHC's requirements?

Sorry, I just saw this. I had to see the bariatric doctor and weigh once a month....I had to have 7 visits in 6 months before my paperwork could be submitted for approval. I started January 2nd and my last appt was July 2nd. I also had two visits with a NUT...not sure if this was my insurance requirement or the clinic requirements. I had to have all the other testing too, such as sleep study, EKG, etc.

Just for anyone who might be interested in how this works at Silver Cross in Joliet - interesting perhaps because it is classified as a "Center of Excellence" - from what I can gather, that is a designation from Medicare (??) and is quite significant. There are only six of those types of "Centers..." in the state of Illinois. The informational meeting lasted almost two hours and carefully explained the various types of bariatric procedures and then the process that needs to be completed before the operation (in my case, it will be banding). The surgeon led the session so ALL questions were answered and many people had many questions - there were around 50 people there. Medicare covers it - which is great because in my case I have Medicare disability - so all that I will have to wait to find out is if my supplemental insurance will pick up the other 20%. I am guessing that they will based on the information I got tonight. The one observation I have to make is about all the discussion concerning the quantity of food that is typically consumed afterwards - some people seemed shocked by the small amount. But --- any of the naturally thin people I know eat those minuscule amounts on a daily basis, so why would we be any different?

So, I am moving to Oregon on Friday and had found a fill doctor in Portland. Not such an easy thing to do being a patient that was banded in Mexico. Anyway, I got a call from Dr. Eubanks scheduler this afternoon saying that all appts and fills for bariatric patients are on hold indefinitely. I guess that his liability insurance has excluded all bariatric patients so until they figure out what to do, he isn't seeing anyone for fills. I am really bummed. I was really looking forward to my fill. Now I have to find a new doctor. Oh well....this too shall pass.

Dr. Vincent Lusco Iii - Great Doctor
ozzie3860 replied to KyBandChick's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I was banded on 8/2010 by Dr Lusco at Sts Mary’s and Elizabeth Hospital in Louisville KY. Dr. Lusco, his office staff and the Bariatric Center at Sts. Mary’s and Elizabeth Hospital has provided me with one of the best medical experiences of my life. Their professionalism and obvious level of knowledge about all aspects of the LapBand process gave me the comfort level I needed to go forward with the LapBand operation. Somebody else in this thread stated that they are “Awesome” and that “They Rock”, I have to say that I 100% agree. -

Pre Operation Appointment Tomorrow
catwoman7 replied to Love27's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
from your bariatric surgeon? No - those are tests that primary care doctors do. I think my bariatric surgeon just talked to me about my expectations and what he felt was realistic. He also talked about the different surgeries and which he would recommend for me (and why). Three hours is a lot - is the surgeon having you talk to a dietitian and/or a psychologist while you're there? If so, that would account for the three hours for sure... -
2 Months post op… suddenly not being able to eat
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to Nikki-leigh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If it’s anxiety around eating because you’re worried about decreased appetite then just know you can eat smaller meals and always go back for something else if you’re still hungry. The types of food you’re adding in may also be the culprit. I know I couldn’t eat or stomach much eggs, chicken breast or dry cooked meats for a while after surgery. So maybe try something different than you were before. Same with the protein shakes, some don’t sit as well after surgery as others and drinking the same ones repeatedly can make us feel nauseated at the thought of having another. If the problem continues after trying some of the suggestions a call to your bariatric team might be in order to rule out anything else that may be going on or give you peace of mind. Hopefully it’s better soon! -

Bariatric surgery and kidney disease
Mary Adams Potts posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am almost done all the requirements prior to gastric band surgery. Today I received a call that my nephrologist did not clear me because of the high Protein requirement. I guess I want to hear from others with kidney disease and how they worked around the high protein diet. My dietitian said she could work with 60 grams but the nurse is saying that even 50 (normal) is not okay. Is the very high protein requirements a new life long necessity or does it decrease after a year or two? Thanks for any help. Mary in PA (Chrias) -
I actually went to the emergency room last Monday because of chest pain over the sternum area and then upwards into the clavicle area. It was sort of a pressure/dull pain and sometimes burning. After the first two days, i even got mini burps that were somewhat painful then disappeared fast, but the pressure/burning remained. It wasn't so much painful but annoying as all get out. Deep breaths are "tight" and a bit sharp. Letting air all the way out is a bit sharp as well. I went to two different doctors (neither bariatric) and both said that it was a muscular strain over the sternum. I still disagree. I have never had heartburn so I don't know what it feels like. I definitely feel like it is "deeper" though. I don't know what acid reflux or heartburn feels like but I think I might be experiencing it. It seems to be going away now after a week, but I wish I knew for sure what it was for sure. I, too, thought it was band related. The only thing that worries me is that sudden acid reflux symptoms can be a sign of slippage? or so I hear.

I talked to my internist about 3 weeks ago about Bariatric Surgery. She referred me to a doctor to get the process started. In the mean time I have had blood work done which indicated I have disposition for diabetes. My blood sugar was 109. That really woke me up. Friday 5/15/09 I went for a sleep study due to snoring and not being able to sleep. Saturday 5/16/09 went to an informational seminar for Bariatric Surgery and I now know the Lap Band is for me. Wednesday 5/20/09 I met with my Internist to have the physical exam paperwork completed. To my surpris she had the results of my sleep study. Mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea. They state that I may benefit from CPAP use. This frightens me as I am claustrophic. I am awaiting a call for the next appointment. Can anyone who has gone through the similar issue with sleep apnea help me. Did your doctor require you to get the CPAP machine before surgery? If I remember correctly during the seminar they advised us you had to. I still am very anxious to have the surgery. I am awaiting a call to see what my insurance says about the Lap Band. From what I was told I should qualify because of my BMI. I am hoping to have this the end of July....keep your fingers crossed that I can all my ducks in a row by then. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who has some hints about the CPAP machine.

Consult Questions You Wish You Had Asked?
trayrenee replied to trayrenee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the good questions. I do know from my research that my surgeon is the head of the program and he has done over 1000 bariatric surgeries since 2003, a majority of them lap band. -
Dunno hon. It depends on your condition and insurance. But you're doing the right thing. The first thing to do is find your new doctor and have them order the tests that will determine if you have stretched your tool and what your options are. They will also look to see if you have any other complications such as hernias, fistulas, stretched stomas, etc. Then they will advise. But while there, you should ask for a referral to an RD (bariatric) and a bariatric counselor and start working on changing behaviors. Cuz a new surgery is fine...but if you don't change your behaviors long term, then you will be back in the same situation. But having said that, there are MANY people who have lost their regain and who maintain today. Hang in there. All is not hopeless!!

How many calories do you eat daily?
spoiltmom posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a few questions guys. How many calories do you eat daily? I've only been eating about 800 a day and I've stopped losing again. Should I up my calories a little to see if that would help? The last diet I did was Weight Watchers about a year ago. I consumed 1200 calories a day and lost 2 pounds a week every week. What kind of meats do you buy? I bought lean ground beef, lean pork, boneless skinless chicken breast, etc but I'm finding those cuts cook up drier and can be hard to get down. Since I'm not able to eat much anyway should I buy fattier cuts so they will be more tender? Also I'm always thirsty and I can still drink a glass of Water pretty fast with no issues but my bariatric coach says I should only sip and not take big drinks. Why is that?? Thanks!!
