    I got hit on today!

Congratulations! There's nothing like it for boosting the self confidence! It is a wonderful NSV. I'm all for accepting appreciation wherever we find it, even if you don't do anything to follow up... Emily

    Friday was my one year......

Congrats Mandy! Now, post your top ten NSVs!
  4. A couple of other cool NSVs: While out hiking, a friend was walking behind me (one of the few that know I had the surgery). She made a .comment about how different I look from behind and that my waist was cutting in I ordered a new v neck tshirt in size L and it fit perfect!!! I was wearing 2XL and many of them were too tight. I was cleaning out my coat closet today (I've cleaned out my main closet a few times, but never got around to my coats). Being in Northern California and wIth surgery end of December, then Covid, I didn't really wear most of my coats this year. I have a raincoat that last year was really tight - I could wear it but couldn't button all the buttons. I tried it on today and it was HUGE. You could literally fit another person in there with me Yay!

    Not So Scary

Today, my housemate very sheepishly asked me for a favor. She asked if it would freak me out or upset me if I made a batch of Mac n' cheese. I am famous across several states for my baked Mac n' cheese. No soupy sauces, just a cheese-laden bowl of goodness so dense that you could cut it into squares to serve it and each square would hold its shape until attacked with a fork. Oh, how I love the stuff. My first reaction was to think that I couldn't do it, because I couldn't face the temptation of having such a yummy, calorie laden treat around the house and me not be able to eat it. Then I stopped and thought. Yes, I have a band now, which means I have to make better choices with food, but I will be making those choices for the rest of my life if I want to be successful. Can I really contemplate an eternity without ever eating Mac n'cheese? Would I even want to? So I came up with a plan, and I have to say, I'm pretty brilliant. I made my housemate my old fashioned Mac n'cheese the way I always do. No weighing, no measuring, just put the stuff in til it looks right, then stick it in the over and let the magic happen. But at the same time, I made a second, much smaller batch just for me. For MY batch, I used whole wheat pasta to eliminate the white flour and raise the fiber content. Then I weighed and measured the exact amount of cheese that would go into the bowl. I measured each additional ingredient carefully and programmed the whole thing into My Fitness Pal so that it would calculate exactly how many calories are in each serving. And you know what? It's not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Not only did it taste just as good as the orginial version, but my 1/4 cup serving had a good amount of protein between the pasta, cheese, egg and milk in the recipe. It also had an amount of calories that easily fit into my daily meal plan alongside a serving of lean meat. I found that 1/4 c just as satisfying as the bowl I would have eaten previously and it felt like a huge NSV to reshape the recipe and eat a healthy amount of a "normal" food. Go me! Now, that isn't to say that the lingering traces of the old me didn't think briefly about eating the entire batch in one sitting, but with my latest fill, I know that I honestly couldn't do it without getting sick. My band would stop me. Finally. But even more than that, I know I'll enjoy each small serving more knowing that I'm still living as a compliant bandster and that I'm still on track to meet my goals. So, I'll say it again: Go me!!!

What's so bad about being fat anyway?

Well you're certainly entitled to an opinion, but I disagree with it. I think mental health is every bit as important as physical and the discrimination and stigma that come from being morbidly obese are valid reasons for surgery, they are every bit as serious a comorbidity as high blood pressure. Its such an ignorant way to view the whole thing, to completely disregard mental health and the effects of obesity on mental health. Hmm, standard cosmetic surgery only affects your looks? Surely having bags of silicone put into your chest, necessitating several repeat surgeries as they degrade and making future mammograms to detect things like breast lumps very very difficult all for the sake of having bigger breasts is every bit as risky as bariatric surgery. Especially the lap band. Managed properly and with a bit of luck that you wont be one of the small percentage that experiences probl4ms, a lap band does NOT compromise your nutrition and health, and I'd hazard a guess its much less risky than carrying round a few silicone implants. We all know the health horrors that have occurred due to breast implants. I dont particularly care to stick toxins in my face either or slice bits of my face all for the sake of looking younger. I'd rather look healthy and fit (as a result fof my lap band surgery and the immeasurably healthier lifestyle that has followed it) but look my age than be overweight and lacking in energy and get up and go but having a nipped and tucked face. And I dont think there's many women around who can say totally honestly that vanity played no part whatsoever in their decision. Come on! So many of our NSV's are about superficial things like going down in sizes and such.
  10. Thank you all so much for your replies, gives me quite a bit to think about- wrestling with the issue. I love that NSV are very life changing, and I dont think im wrong picking a number either- just trying to wrap my mind around the difference between advisors and what is sustainable. i too am very short- and have lived most of my life overweight. Im motivated by the numbers, but just as an indicator on how im doing - and i do feel really good. Still no labs pulled, but have plans for them to be pulled in August, prior to the Bariatric nutritionist. At 4.5 months post op, i know i still have a bit to go, but am trying to shift my thinking towards the maintenance phases. Not there yet, but i could accept it if I my body decided this is my stable weight.
  11. I'm three days post op and have been a type II Diabetic for 10 plus years. I've been medicated on and off with Insulin, Glucophage, and Diabeta at different intervals during that time having been on Glucophage only these last several years. Uncontrolled type two diabetes has brought me cataracts in both eyes and other health related issues. My surgeon had me discontinue meds after surgery. As of yesterday, my glucose numbers are completely normal and Dr. says they should stay this way. I am both amazed and awed at the turn around the sleeve has brought me already.

    Exercising

Exercise creates more energy, but it takes a long time to get to that point. I worry about how I will fit it in when I go back to work too, I know that I've just gotten up at 5.30 to run before going out on teaching rounds. If you can involve your kids then that's good for both of you, you DO have 2 days at the weekend where you've got more time, and personally, I'd buy equipment for home if I could, a treadmill or something and just get on there and DO it. Yes, its hard, yes you're exhausted but what is your ultimate goal? I found I just had to push through that kind of stuff and now that I'm really fit, its something I really WANT to do, really WANT to prioritise and I virtually never have that feeling any more. At least if you're exercising at home, you're with your kids. As you lose and get fitter you wont be so exhausted. Really, most of us should be able to work and get up to get kids to school without finding it too challenging, you just dont realise how utterly crappy and exhaused you feel when you're very overweight. I promise that horrid inertia will disappear as you get closer to your goal - in fact its probably my biggest NSV. I care more about how much more energetic, efficient and in control I am than I do about what size I'm wearing. Truly, you'll get there. In the meantime, its horrid but you just have to force yourself. There's no need to do more than four times a week, more is good, but four is more than adequate.

Gone for Good Club - April 2006

I wondered what NSVs were - read about them but never knew - thanks! and yes - I am thrilled my diabetes is well under control - now for the cholesterol - I worry about the fact that it has gone up even with my medication doubled -- my dad died of heart attack during the night all alone - and I don't want that to happen to me! the doctor thinks maybe it is just heredity and lack of ability to exercise - any suggestions anyone? the cholesterol has got to go down! thanks everyone - it is so encouraging here!
  14. Thanks Lissa!! I guess I really do need to take inventory on the NSV's: my pants are fitting looser, I'm back to walking at a higher intensity than pre surgery, my wedding ring doesn't fit anymore and since going back to work this week, EVERYONE is noticing my weight loss!!! I guess it's time to stop "shoulding" on myself especially since I refused to set a weight goal and monitor my success based on how I feel!!!! This is why I hate the scale...it really messes with my head!!! Hang in there everyone....we'll get there (wherever there is LOL)!!!!!!

    oops! :-O

Lol!!!! Now that's an NSV right there! I literally laughed out loud...that has to be the best embarrassing/victory moment I've read on here...thanks for sharing! And congrats on your awesome weight loss!!!!!!!!!!!

    Sept. 8th & 9th Gastric Bypass surgery.

It has been 2 weeks.... How is everyone doing? Anyone still feeling pain? How are your incisions healing? And NSV's to speak of? I am doing great.... I had my first follow-up appt with my surgeon. Everything is fine and on track so I see him again in 2 weeks. I saw him before but it wasn't a follow up as much as to take the drain out. Still pain free and completely comfortable but still itchy around my incisions sometimes. I have a few NSV's.... 1. I can wear my wedding rings and they are comfortable. 2. I am almost a full size down. 3. I am wearing undies that were too small before 4. My feet are changing and shoes are already getting loose. It's a start and I am over the moon about #1 And my surgeon says that I can start doing ab work and weights in a week. Yay!!! What about you?
  17. NSV. Is short for non scale victory. Something not related to the number on the scale. Like one of my first was my son telling me he could fit his arms around me further lol

    Nsv

Yesterday, I had to go to the pet store to get some hay for my bunny. While at the shopping centre, I thought I'd try on a few pairs of jeans, just to see if I could find any I like. Went to 3 different stores. In every one, I was able to fit into a couple of their size 14's! That's a 12 in US sizes!! I danced the happy dance lol. The last time I could wear a size 12 US, I was in my senior year of high school .. and even then they didn't fit comfortably (yesterday they did).

    One-derland

And a NSV from today. I went shopping for the first time in almost 7 months (last time was pre-Pandemic as most stores are just starting to open here). Last time I was still in plus size and I was so frustrated with the complete lack of options (shopping discount type stores like Nordstrom Rack and Marshalls). Today, there were so many great options - it felt amazing to be able to pick clothes I like v. anything that fit and didn't look terrible. I still have a ways to go so I bought a handful of tops and stopped myself but seriously so excited to be able to wear clothes that are my sense of style!
  20. @Laura7 reading, enjoying ,catching up with your story. one of my first NSV's was wrapping a bath towel around me. i wasn't expecting the towel to fit alllllllll the way around me, but it did!! One of many NSV's for you to look forward to. kathy keep up the great job congrats
  21. So I'm about 4.5 wks post op and still going through the healing process and the pureed food stage but I'm noticing big differences already. I've had 2 major "aha" moments that remind me that hey, my body is in fact changing, bc sometimes my mind forgets. The first was in the supermarket. I was checking out and had to get to the credit card machine but the cart was in the way. I stepped to the side of cart and pushed it besides me while in the aisle. Usually I have to get out of the aisle, then pull the cart out of the way and then finally step back into the aisle. Did that all make sense? I was completely amazed and smiled like an idiot when I realized what had just happened lol The second was the below pic-I haven't done this since I was teen. I just naturally sat this way and then it occurred to me that it's been almost 20 yrs since I could do that!! (I was parked when I took this pic btw lol) Yay for NSV-they blow my mind more than the numbers on the scale do sometimes! What's your biggest NSV or "aha" moment?

    It's done...although with last-minute changes

Small update...my plateau finally broke, and it was the result of actually increasing my calorie intake a little bit. I am now sitting at around 1,200-1,300 calories a day and the weight loss has picked back up again. I've started back at the gym again, just adding cardio. Over the past couple of months, my endurance and general condition has improved so much. When I first moved back to Colorado from California in mid-November and started delivering parcels for Amazon Flex, it was exhausting. Now, I barely break a sweat...so it was time to get back to daily cardio workouts. A great NSV is the fact that I've gone from a 52 waist pant worn below my waistline (and gut) to a 46 waist at my ACTUAL waist. I made the mistake of not measuring my waist before I started this process, so I'm not sure what it actually was...but I'm betting I started around 56" or so. So probably 10" off my waist to this point. I'm also fitting into 2x clothing now, down from 4x. My wife just had her first appointment with a surgeon, she's planning on getting the RNY during her summer break (she's a teacher). She's been impressed with the weight loss I've achieved thus far and is excited (and nervous) about following in my footsteps. It's the been the best decision I've made though, I wish I'd done it 10 years ago. Still got a ways to go, but it's coming!
