  2. I recently went through the process with Lovelace Westside and had an overall good experience. There were some annoying points, but for the most part it was just fine. First, Dr. Smith was my surgeon. I went to his seminar and since Dr. Sanchez was going to be unavailable for a month or two that's ok. Smith is based out of Ft. Worth and comes in once or twice a month for surgeries. He has the most experience with somewhere around 1500 completed. He trained Dr. Sanchez and now that she's at the 150 mark she does most of the Albuquerque area surgeries now. For complicated patients with high BMI they both are there just in case. Dr. Smith did an excellent job. I have never had a surgery (and unfortunately I've had more than I would like) with such a low amount of pain and quick recovery. His stitches are extremely well done too, which I appreciated. Overall the process on surgery day was over quickly and just as advertised. The only issue I have was with one of the support staff. Specifically the social worker they have to do the mental health evaluations. She is rude, doesn't know what she's talking about, and makes a lot of threats to you while you're in the office. It's the "if you don't do such and such I'm not going to approve you for surgery" type comments that she makes over and over that get irritating. Waiting for other patients I've heard some more colorful complaining about her. If you just answer her questions and get it over with it's usually painful. Everyone else from the front-office staff, to the dietician, to the post-op care PA are phenomenal to work with. They were very friendly and got every question of mine answered. Be prepared to be told everything about 6-10 times over the course of your "journey" with them. They have you look at a website that has everything, then for the next 3-4 months while you're going through the "journey" they will tell you it again, and again. The process has been working. I've lost about 20 pounds since the surgery and it is very easy. I strongly recommend this process to anyone. One thing to keep in mind is that they are now doing some form of bariatric surgery in Santa Fe at St. Vincent's now. I'm not sure if they do the lapbands or the gastric bypass, though.

    Uncomfortablity in Abdomen?

My surgery was 12/28/12, I returned to work on 01/08/13. I found it comfortable to lean back in my chair and stretch my arms to reach the mouse and keyboard. Before I knew it, I was not feeling anything. I also make a point to stand up - even if it is just to stand. Can you adjust your chair to lean back a little - are you able to reposition your monitor (make it higher?)

    Protein from Food.

Hi. I am wondering if anyone is able to get enough protein, per day, by food. I am 10 weeks post op and have been on “normal” food for over a month. I absolutely detest protein powder, protein shakes, protein drink and any form or protein supplement. Not only do I detest, but it doesn’t sit well inside my stomach. I try to eat protein throughout the day (eggs, chicken, turkey, Greek yogurt, tuna, some cheeses) but I feel like I am no where near my protein gram goal. Wondering if anyone is hitting their protein goal with actual and food and what you are eating. Thanks.

Travel to China - protein/water options

Thank you Aubrie and Cathy for your wonderful insight and suggestions. I'll be in China for 10 days. We'll be in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xian so it sounds like there will be plenty of Protein options. Before my surgery I would have said that I was a bit of a picky eater. I've tried a number of different foods since my surgery and am looking forward to expand my palate while on vacation. Thanks again for all the great suggestions and advise.
  6. Losing Laura

    No weight loss! :(

I have the same problem. I lost 10 lbs pre-op and was sleeved on 03/05/13. I lost 19 lbs post surgery and stalled after 2.5 weeks. At almost 6 weeks I lost another pound and after another week I have lost 1 more fore a total of 21 post op (plus 10 pre-op. my doctor says that it's normal and that my metabolism is recalculating and my body is catching up with the changes. This is all just part of the process. The truth is that some people lose faster than others and it really depends on how much your body needs to lose. Be patient. The scale will move again!
  7. I started this journey by contacting my insurance company in December of 2014 and getting the covered doctors info and call and doing research on the different options. I made an appointment with a dr for January 8, 2015. I did my weight in(265) and started the nutrition classes. I finished in May and was on vacation when the dr's office called to set up my surgery. I had no problems getting all requirements done and paperwork turned in and things went smooth throughout this process. I scheduled surgery for over the summer as I run a home daycare and have three teenaged daughters who help out and could take over for a few days. My surgery went great(June 15, 2015) , but after I got really sick and found out I was allergic to morphine. That caused my to have a three day stay in the hospital. After I got morphine out of my system I was great. Followed my dr's plan and started losing weight. Then life happened, my oldest daughter(18 with a 1 y/o) moved out in August, then October came and my middle daughter(16)tried to overdose and was in the hospital for a few days not knowing what would happen, she was then put in a behavioral hospital for about a week, she started doing better and then all the sudden in December told us she needed to go back to the hospital which she said the week of Christmas. As this was going on I started having some pains and found out I needed my gall bladder removed and had surgery on Dec 29 to get it removed. In January my middle daughter finally told us she was raped and we started the process of a restraining order and sexually assault charges. My oldest at this time moved in an apartment with a roommate. She was there for one week in March and had to move because her roommate kicked her and my 1 1/2 yo grandson out, so we had to go load up all her things and put them in storage, and she moved back in. April I thought would be better, but no. My husband decided that I was doing so well that he wanted to look into the surgery. Our insurance had changed on January 1st so we found another doctor and went to the seminar. He waited for them to call and schedule an appointment. They called and scheduled for a few days later. He went in and did the evaluation and with his family history they did an EKG and found out that he had a heart attack last week!!! With all this going on I have done my best with my diet and Exercise that I have been able to do. I fit in working out for the most part(between hospital visits and surgery, it was not easy!!! I started this journey at 265 and A size 24 pants/3XL shirt, surgery weight 240 and today I weight 170. I am 5 pounds away from my goal and last night while waiting for my daughter to get off work, I was walking around Target and decided I would look at the Clarence racks as I have not bought very many clothes for me (since losing all the weight). I don't work out side of the home and didn't want to waste my money so I just wear the same thing all the time. I found a size 10 pair of pants and though why not??? I tried them on and they fit!!!! I was so excited, that was my goal size!!! So with all this being said........... No matter what life brings you have your eye on your goal and you will eventually make it. I have 5 more pounds I want to lose by my one year(June 15) and I know I can do it!!! I hope that with me saying all this and pouring my heart out to everyone shows you no matter what if you want to do this you will be able to!!!! Here is a before picture and a picture of me in the size 10 jeans.
  8. Today is day 10 post op. I have lost 26 lbs since the surgery. This is my third day adding protein to my diet. Yesterday was the first day with no weight loss, but, I had to break our a pair of suspenders to keep my pants up. Walking more each day. Gonna stay away from the scale a couple of days.

    Pounds!

My 14 day pre-op diet is required by my doctor, and consists of 4 Protein shakes or bars each day and one Lien Cuisine meal. They must all total no more than 1200 calories. The Protein shakes must have more than 10% protein versus calories (I use Ensure High Protein Milk chocolate - very, very yummy. They have 210 calories and 25 grams of protein. So, the calorie/protein ratio is good with the requirement). I've lost 8.5 pounds so far in my pre-op and I'm in day 10. Have 4 more days till surgery. Good luck!
  10. Help! When I weighed in on my first visit I was at 43 BMI, so I cannot lose a lot of weight and still qualify for surgery (maybe 10 pounds). Anyway, I have been gaining weight at a RAPID pace since the visit. I don't know if I am in "last supper" mode for these six months or subconsiously trying not to lose too much, but I am getting more miserable than I already was. I can't stay like this for six months. What can I do to find a balance where I keep the weight I need for the surgery and not gain more?
  11. I'm right there with you... On month 3 of 6 and I just want to be post op already. The WLS center that I'm going to focuses on starting the behaviors you'll need to follow post-op during the 6 months. This includes making sure your Protein intake is adequate (at least 60 grams). Eat protein first. Then veggies if still hungry then healthy carbs. Measure everything! Track everything (myfitnesspal) Another big one- Water consumption. At least 64 oz daily. Start following the rule of no drinking 15 min before, during and 30 mins after a meal. Cut out carbonated beverages. Exercise. Start doing 10-15 mins 3 days a week and work up to 40-45 mins at least 4 days a week.
  12. I was sleeved October 2016. I had horrible reflux daily and was on several meds. I still gagged and vomited up acid daily. I also gained back 25 pounds I had lost. I was snacking all the time because if my stomach was empty I threw up. I had my revision last Monday, September 2019. So far so good. No reflux.
  13. "A great offer near to the low-hanging fruit greater compared to last many different many years is becoming picked away the tree," but "it doesn't necessarily mean traders can't do nicely using the industry greater compared to lengthy term," says Joe Rodriguez, a coach outlet store manager for the roughly $2 billion purpose specific Estate Fund. Still, managers like Mr. Rodriguez say 7% to 10% standard yearly returns greater compared to following 5 many years are much more realistic for the category. Spotting a great combination of real-estate plays may be difficult sometimes, as well as best managers have struggled to positioned adequate into REITs. CGM Realty Fund is among the the best-performing real-estate cash greater compared to previous three and 5 years, but has fallen at the rear of the majority of its peers for the year. The reason: The fund held a 25% stake in mining shares in the complete of June, which has offered that been eliminated. "In retrospect, I need I hadn't been so invested" in all those shares offered which they weren't "as powerful performers as REITs," says the fund's manager Ken Heebner. Alpine U.S. specific Estate Equity Fund also experienced among the the extremely biggest three-year keep track of documents for real-estate cash at just one place last year, but is now lifeless last among the peers with harmful 2.6% returnscoach factory outlet for the yr to date. The fund was among the the quantity of real-estate cash invested in residence builders, with much greater than 50% there last yr past to trimming to 30%. "Home builders obtained whacked, and accommodations have been completely executing relatively nicely but not as well as we'd want to see," says Sam Lieber, manager near to the fund.
  14. I went to a new doc yesterday I really liked him he unfilled me all the way then added 1cc to my band now at 7.5 after I had the fill I got real light headed and felt dizzy I had to lay down for about 10 mins then I was fine , but how long after your fill did you take you to get adjusted to it I know they say your stomach can swell do to fills ! Did you feel as it was harder to hold down anything for the first couple days ?
  15. Wow...my surgery is now only two days away. I was not nervous at all until about 10 minutes ago. I am looking forward to starting a new chapter in my life. This is probably the scariest thing that I've ever done. Change is always scary and this is going to be one big change.
  16. Hi all - so I'm 12 days post op and kinda surprised that I am not feeling better than I do. My sleeve is great but it feels like my body had decided to fall apart on me. Day five I started with real bad itching around my incisions, by day 10 it was unbearable - I peeled off the steri stips and had big welts under them. The incisions were fine, dry healing well but it appears that now I'm allergic to steri strips as the itching stopped as soon as they were off and the welts are slowly fading (I've been putting benedryl cream on them). One crisis averted now I've started with muscle spasms. I don't know if anyone else has had this happen. I can't tell if I did something to throw out my back or if its related to the port site but I had the first episode Thursday morning - the pain shoots from my back to front (or front to back?) right at the old port site. I can breath, I tense up and wave after wave of contracting muscle just consumes my left side. Friday it happened once in the morning and twice in a row at night - this forced me to open the pain killer that the hospital prescribed which helps immensely. Did anyone else have spasms and how long did they last. I can't lie in bed or recline to far in a chair or it sets them off so I've been sleeping practically upright for two nights (glad I have a comfy chair). Thanks

  18. I am being banded on Jan 10. Someone had mentioned to me that she had heard that after banding you could loose your hair. Has anyone heard of this? If so, is it a lot or is it a thinning hair? Also why? I don't go to the doctors untill December 18. Don't want to be worrying about something if it is not true or could be avoided.
  19. I can't wait to see the 230's either! I was 248 the morning of surgery & today, a week later I'm 243. It's only 5 lbs, but I'm still convinced I have some swelling in my belly considering I still can't suck my tummy in! I was 236 when I got pregnant with my son. He's almost 10 months old....way too long to be holding on to baby weight!!!
  20. Me too want, have a 10/22/13 date with Mexico Bariatric Center, Dr. Valenzuela... Anyone with experience please?!?!?
  21. Several headlines in the media recently are attempting to say just that. But is it true? The news reports arose from a study that just appeared in JAMA Surgery Online. The paper was entitled “Self-harm Emergencies After Bariatric Surgery: A Population-Based Cohort Study”. The study is based on two matched cohort groups. The first group (control) consisted of 8,815 people who did not undergo bariatric surgery. The second group consisted of 8,681 people who did have the surgery. The group that underwent the procedure experienced a self-harm emergency rate of 3.63 events per 1000 patient-years. In the group that did not have the operation, that rate was 2.33 — —a 54 percent increase. Yes, the group measured a 54 percent difference, but does this mean that the surgery was responsible? It sure doesn’t. The study abstract reads: “A total of 147 events (93.0%) occurred in patients diagnosed as having a mental health disorder during the five years before the surgery.” It is possible that bariatric surgery may be responsible for mental disorders later on. But, when the mental health confounder is factored in, it becomes impossible to determine this. The suicide attempts could be arising from the preexisting mental disorder, the surgery, or some combination of both. It is impossible to tell from this study. http://acsh.org/2015/10/suicide-tries-from-weight-loss-surgery-study-fails-to-show/ From my perspective, it is important to realize that bariatric surgery does not solve pre-existing mental health issues. You may lose the weight but the baggage will still remain. I suspect that is why there is so much emphasis on the motives for undergoing the operation, by having a psych evaluation prior to being accepted as a candidate for surgery. It is also why there is great emphasis within the program to seek psychological help if needed.

    Tomorrow is the Day!!!

so excited for you! I'm new, need to do my profile etc. but wanted to wish you well! Mine is Wednesday 12/19!!! I cannot wait! ))
  23. Well who knew???? After 10 months of weighing myself every morning as soon as I woke up and had my coffee but after I took my pajamas off I would weigh myself thinking this was the best time of day (to get the lowest weight). Well my husband said, no, the best time is after you've exercised (even though I have 2 cups of coffee before I go out). Sure enough, the scale is 1/2 lb to 1 lb lower after I exercise! So that's my tip of the day.....I'll take it any way I can get it! (Another incentive to work out too!)

    Hair Loss

I take the same thing. My hair is thick but has been shedding a lot lately. In the shower and after I comb out my hair I can pull like 10-20 strands out just from running my fingers through it...its freaking me out too. I'm 3 months post.
