  1. The pre op diet is a doozie isn't it. 99% of people really struggle with the limitations, its the ultimate cruelty for fat people. The thought of the surgery starting and having to end due to a fatty liver kept me on the straight and narrow for the most part. I did break twice in the 3 week of my torture, I ate 2 small packets of Jerky ! This caused me so much worry that it was not worth the cheat. I lost 15lbs. I was allowed caffeine [ thank the lord] any low carb vegetable, a quart of skimmed milk, 2 low fat yogurts, 2 items of fruit. Sugar free jelly and popsicles a day. It was winter so I ate lots of asian style vegetable broth and curried vegetables. I ran to the operating theatre, I was so over the diet.

    I was allowed the tiny packets of super crispy melba toast at about 6 weeks after surgery. I was told it dissolves quickly. All carbs are still a bit on the heavy side for me. I eat the very occasional slice of super seeded wholemeal but its best toasted crisp. I tried some tiny bites of pitta with humous last week and it wedged in my tummy for hours. I felt awful and nauseous. Nothing was off limits as far as my team were concerned after about 10 weeks. You need to get answers from your team because they all have different ideas on how to go forwards

    stall. Just stick to your program and stay off the scale for a few days. It'll soon break and you'll be on your way again.

    So it’s been a little over 3 months since my surgery. I haven’t lost any weight for the last two weeks. I actually think I gained a lb or two! ( if my scale is accurate lol). Despite efforts of trying to exercise more. Walking up to 4 miles a day plus riding stationary bike 20 minutes most days! Also been cutting back and only eating 500 to 650 calories a day. What is going on?!?!?

    2/21/23 Sleeves - how is your recovery going?

    Yeah - I hit a stall and am still on liquids. In a couple days I get to move to pureed foods. Hopefully will get over this hump and see continued progress as I move on to real food and keep my activity up. I've experienced everything you're talking about the chest pressure and stomach pain, too - I think that's just the new normal to watch out for.
  6. I had my sleeve on 2/22. Feeling pretty good. Today is the first day I actually feel hungry. I am still on a liquid diet until week 3. If I drink too fast or too much my chest hurts getting it down then I get a pain in my stomach. I am down 13lbs since DOS. Excited for that, but also nervous once I start eating solids I am going to be at a stand still.
  7. The withdrawal from caffeine, sugar, etc. can be awful. Headaches, shakes, cold sweats, …. and the craving for them can be greater. Thankfully the first week is usually the worst. My surgeon recommends different diets for different patients but the all shake diet is known as hell week in his office. I’d done the shake diet twice before (two shake meals & one low carb, low fat meat & vegetable/salad meal) so I was much relieved when the dietician said I was to do keto for the two weeks. No calorie requirement or macro goals just high fat, high protein, low carb, low sugar. (She also said keto was a good way to kick start my weight loss but not as a long term diet.) I lost about 5kgs.
  8. Omgosh, on day 13 your surgery got post poned?? That must’ve been frustrating! I’m really happy you were able to have the surgery eventually. Do you remember what you had for your liquid diet? Was it all protein shakes or other? I’m thinking I may move to liquids the last three days. Just wanted to see what helped you 😊
  9. I was on a 2-week all liquid pre-op diet. Fortunately, I felt happy during it. I didn’t agonize over what I could or couldn’t, should or shouldn’t eat. Every day brought me closer to surgery, and that was exciting.. On the evening of Day 13, I got a call from the surgical nurse letting me know all surgeries were cancelled due to Covid. This was in March 2020. So I had another few months of food funerals, but nothing too crazy. When I was scheduled again for VSG four months later, I was happy to go back on the liquid diet. I knew I could do it; the first time was a rehearsal! I guess it’s all a matter of attitude and keeping a positive mindset.
  10. Hello all! I’m on day 6 of a 2-week pre-op diet and can feel my brain working against me. I’ve got it a little better than most with the diet requiring less than 40 carbs per day and no more than 1200 calories. My nutritionist said she doesn’t mind if I go above the calories limit so long as I don’t exceed 40 carbs. I’ve been squeaky clean so far, even when I went to the movies last night (salivation is real lol), but I just cut caffeine completely and my body is not having any of it. I started to negotiate with myself - “Just one Oreo isn’t going to screw up the whole plan” and then snapped myself out of it by making a cup of decaf tea. How did you all do on the pre op diet? I feel like I must be super weak if I’m struggling to do this for 14 days 😂

    Yes after the surgery I’m on a 2 week liquid, 2 week purée and then 2 week soft food. We’ll do great. I keep hearing about the discomfort with the gas. My dr prescribed some medicine for it already. So we shall see

    I’m doing it to get me back on track. A week of going through the steps isn’t going to make someone gain a bunch of weight, as long as they stick to how they’re supposed to eat when it’s over. Gotta get your mind back on track.

    Feb sleeves unite!

    LGS 2/15/23. I’m struggling mentally with all of this. I have regrets and wish I never had this surgery. I’m probably grieving about all of this. It just seems so miserable to watch everyone else enjoy their food and while I can only have pureed eggs and such in such small portions. If not I’ll end up sick. I’ve not had nausea or vomiting but trying to time things where I’m not eating and drinking at the same time and waiting 40 minutes after a meal to drink and trying to hit the hydration goals and trying to get the 60 grams of protein in. It takes eating all day to hit the protein targets but if I’m eating all day I fail at meeting my water goals and the reverse is true when trying to get my protein in. I’m allergic to artificial sweeteners and dairy products so I cant do the shakes, the water based protein drinks make me feel ill, and I’m not at week 4 where I can have soft foods. I’m just hoping all of this will be worth it and it will get better. I completed 2 years of therapy before having the sleeve and started at 211 lbs with a bmi of 37. I think I probably could have chosen a less restrictive option and accomplished the weight loss goals. I need encouraging. I’m not happy ever when I have to put food or drinks to my lips. Additionally its difficult because you cant heat food in the microwave but eating slowly causes it to be cold and so it’s just a struggle I didn’t anticipate which frustrates me terribly because I’m always hungry and always turned off by food because of all this. Pureed food is better than the liquids but Im just not happy and need a safe space to vent. Otherwise things are progressing as expected my t week post op appointment I was down 15 lbs so that’s a win but again I hope this gets better. Is there anyone at least 2 -3 months out from surgery and how’s it going?

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

    Weekly check in. Down a couple more this week so the streak continues. 23 days into my 90 day push. Just ove a pound to lose in the next week to stay on track for my goal. I will be adding some supplements to my diet beginning Monday, so we'll see if they can be detected in my numbers over the next month. The goal for 1/3 the way through my challenge is 254. I'm 255.2 today. Other than clearing snow, taking it easier today. Time to make some bacon!

    liveaboard15 is correct. Most of us experience the "three week stall". Also, those weight fluctuations are just fluctuating water levels. With as little as you're probably eating, there's no way that's a true gain. It's just fluid levels.

    Month 3: Only lost 6 lbs this month Why?

    Our weight loss is never a consistently straight downward line on a graph. It goes up & down, zigs & zags, has peaks & valleys. Much like the fluctuations we all have when we maintain our weight - no one ever weighs the exact same weight every single day. It could be this same natural fluctuation (hormones, water retention, constipation, etc.). It could be a stall as we can experience a number of them. And your rate of weight loss slowly but surely slows as you progress. Have a chat with your dietician about the timings of your meals. It may be having an impact 🤷🏻‍♀️. There’s no one way of eating which works for everyone. Personally I eat more often as the day progresses & consequently eat later (I have lunch at 4pm & dinner at around 6/6:30) but I also don’t eat after 8pm. It works for me.
  19. Fluids go through your digestive system much more quickly. Plus a lot of nerve endings were cut during the surgery & take time to heal which is why portion control is even more important from when you begin purées. When you’re more healed your full or had enough signals (be careful they can be different to those you are used to) will begin to kick in. There’s a great video that shows how fluids flush solid foods through your tummy reducing our absorption of nutrients which is why we are advised not to drink 30 minutes before & after eating. This isn’t it but it shows the same thing & also helps understand how fast fluids go through our smaller tummy. And yes you’ll have days when it’s more difficult to meet your goals & others when you reach them easily. Your plan of two weeks per stage is pretty common. I was told 1/4 - 1/3 cup from purée.

    March 23 buddies yet?

    If it is not too difficult or stressful for you, I say go and enjoy yourself but drink your protein prior and enjoy sipping on your teas, broths, etc while they eat and you all socialize. I am on day 10 of 14 and took my son to dinner for his birthday last week with family and did exactly that and was so glad that I went and enjoyed myself. It didn't bother me at all nor anyone else as they understood (many of whom I didn't feel the need to explain the full situation but simply if asked why I wasn't eating I explained I had an upcoming medical procedure and was on a very limited diet. No questions asked. Enjoy yourself! You can't stop living! This is only the beginning of life-long changes when we will not be able to eat as others do. Good luck and be strong. This is your life, live it! ❣️
  21. I know that a lot of programs do things differently. My program calls for 2 weeks post-op liquids only, followed by 2-3 weeks of pureed, before moving on to soft foods. I am near the end of my second week, and have been using beef and chicken bone broths along with cream soups to keep some flavor sliding past my pallet. My question is - Why does it feel like I can have an endless flow of liquids going into me? How does this tie into actual food, where I've been told that I will be able to eat a maximum of 2 tbsp of something like scrambled eggs? Maybe I'm not understanding how liquids don't rest in my pouch anymore? I'm getting in like 70+ oz a day between protein shakes, gatorade zero, water, and broths/cream soups. I feel like this is too much - am I doing something wrong?
  22. Most of the people I'm working with now have not seen me at my heaviest. Only two of three of them. The problem is when staff from HQ come for the monthly meetings / site visits. I try to keep a low profile during those day but still will get noticed lol.

    You are fine. around week 2-3 you end up hitting the infamous 3rd week stall where you wont loose and can gain. and this will happen throughout your first year. your body is adjusting. just stick to the plan
  24. My insurance didn't cover it either, as Catwoman mentioned, your employer needs to add it to their plan, and I was told no going around that. I ended up as self pay, and using my HSA savings. Because I have a high deductible plan, I figured even if I was able to go the insurance route, it would cost me 7K in my deductible, and I would lose months and months of time jumping through insurance hoops. There are clinics I'm sure all over the country that specialize in just bariatric surgery, I went through West Medical in LA and had a great experience, it was $10K and only took 3 weeks from 1st consult to surgery. Mexico clinics start around $5k, and while I know some have had great experiences that route, I just wasn't comfortable. It's very possible you have a local bariatric Dr. that takes self pay. There are also financing options with credit cards like Care Payment that offer no/low interest rates. Don't let money hold you back!
  25. Well I am two weeks out and not losing weight...actually gaining. I got dehydrated first week so that may be why I lost 10 pounds first week but now I am up 5 pounds and this week I start pureed today. What is wrong? Why am I not losing?
