    Help

I should note my insurance doesn't require any weight loss before surgery. The Bariatric place, however, has said they would like to see some kind of weight loss and they can choose not to do the surgery. :-( No, they just want to see an effort made.

    Uhc Average Approval Times?

My UHC policy had Bariatric Resources through Optum: The most effective treatment to date for significant, sustained weight loss for morbidly obese patients is bariatric surgery.2 Because clinical outcomes of bariatric surgery vary widely, receiving services at an OptumHealth Bariatric Resource Services (BRS) Center of Excellence (COE) facility can help ensure that bariatric surgery and care are delivered in a manner that meets strict standards and increases the likelihood of superior outcomes and ultimately reduces costs. Our BRS clinical team works to help individuals understand and manage the conditions associated with morbid obesity before and after surgery and have reduced inappropriate surgeries by 5 percent.3 Successful weight loss is achieved through: Guidance to Centers of Excellence network facilities, helping to better control the disparity of care and variability of surgical outcomes. Multi-disciplinary bariatric clinical team approach. Case management 6-months post-surgery to assess for complications and to reinforce lifestyle changes. Behavioral support to reinforce lifestyle changes, nutrition, exercise, and encouragement to participate in bariatric support groups. Behavioral health support is coordinated with the client?s behavioral health vendor.
  4. My goal is to lose 38% of my total starting body weight. I state it that way because people (those who I've confided in) tell me "you don't need that surgery." Even my bariatric surgeon (who I think is great) looked at me as they were prepping me for surgery and said "no one would believe you are a bariatric patient." These statements bother me because this is not an easy decision for anyone who makes it. I am 4' 11". I have never been 5' and will never be. My BMI is 35.3. I am 57 yrs old. I have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, have joint pains... I can go on. At my highest I weighed 175 lbs. My body knows I'm obese. I have lost a lot of weight, several times and in-between I was either losing or gaining. I always gained more back. My sister (5' 4") and I lost a lot together a few years and then we both gained it all back and then some. Last year my sister confided in me that she was 4 weeks post surgery for the sleeve. I was shocked. I wasn't in the mindset to start another diet again yet but surgery seemed extreme. I read her brochures and listened to her process and still doubted. I saw her again this last summer (lives a couple of states away) and after 8 months, she lost 65 lbs and looks great! I watched her and she behaved "normally". She didn't dwell on food and she didn't require a special diet. She was enjoying her new life with her new body. I was tired of failed diets. I went to the next information session on bariatric surgery. Three months later I had sleeve surgery. I don't want to review my status right now because I know I am healing and changing and any issues are temporary. I can tell you that I am down 15 lbs (10 day pre-surgery diet and first days of clear liquids). Kudos to my sister who is my support group.

    Raging hormones

As you lose weight, estrogen that is stored in fat cels re-enter your circulatory system. You probably do need an adjustment But it might also be a mourning of foods. Both are real possibilities. Start with your bariatric Dr. He or she can guide you best. Good luck.
  6. (Permission for this post has been sought and approved by Alex Brecher - the Bariatric Pal founder) http://goo.gl/forms/tzfhG1CzRk Have you had bariatric surgery more than six months ago, and within the last ten years? Research for a Master’s degree at the University of Nottingham would appreciate your help! I am carrying out a research project into barriers to weight loss upon completion of bariatric surgery. There is often little-to-no aftercare provided for bariatric surgery patients, and many people can find it difficult to adjust to their new strict diet and exercise regime without any external help, resulting in a lot of variability in patient outcomes. By taking part in this short questionnaire, you will be contributing to an important field of research that can ultimately help bariatric surgery patients achieve their full potential in their weight loss journey. Above and below is a link to an online survey, where we would like you to provide us with information about your experiences after your surgery. Please click the link and follow the instructions on screen. Please share as much information as you are comfortable with. This study has full ethical clearance from the University of Nottingham, and please be assured that all of the information you provide will be completely anonymised. Thank you for your help. I'm the 10th as well. Started preop yesterday. Have to do 5 Bariatric advantage shakes a day. I can also have all the SF Popsicles and jello I want. Any clear liquids SF of course and broths. I'm so nervous and excited to do this.
  11. I'm in Kansas. It's raining and dreary and cool. I'm up, my husband is sleeping in. My yorkie (Lucy) is snoring at my feet, and I am craving the perfect cup of coffee. I would settle for the perfect cup of decaf coffee. I almost brewed it, but I got out my bariatric bible that the nutritionist gave me, and it clearly states to wait 2 months. UGH!!!!! So, I'm sipping the perfect bottle of natural spring Water instead. When did YOU have your first cup of coffee or decaf after your sleeve surgery?

    Kentucky welcome

I am in Henderson KY and am waiting on my date with Dr Weiss...impatiently:) Not sure if I am going to continue going through Georgetown Bariatric or just use Dr Weiss in Louisville. I am so glad to have found this site it is awesome!!
  15. I was banded back in 2001. I did well for a while but stopped getting fills after I lost my health insurance. I have to go through Flouro for a fill which is VERY expensive. Anyway, I have gained back almost all that I lost, but am recommitted to the band and have health insurance again. My original doctor has now left the practice. The doctor I have now just isn't filling me as aggressively as I need him to. He is putting in 1cc to 2cc's at a time and saying it is aggressive, but within a couple days I have no restriction. Should I keep going to him? Should I ask for another doctor in the same practice (they are now a bariatric center rather than the small practice they were when I was banded)? or should I seek out a new doctor at another practice or center? Would love to hear your thoughts. I really need a doctor that is going to tighten this thing and I have given my current doctor a couple shots at it and still nothing. (which is especially frustrating when I didn't have health insurance and I told him I was paying for the fills out of pocket at the tune of 3000 per one) Thanks in advance.
  16. Well that is a tough one, Thing is my Dr is the one that will do my fills and this was included with the cost of the surgery, However in a conversation with my Dr, someone local had the lap band surgery from someone that was not local, this person ended up with a problem that My dr had to fix in the ER and he did not get compensated at all for it. Things happen. I had to make a 2 year committment to my Dr to stay in this area so that he can keep up with my progress and do my fills etc. I will see him every 3 months after the next couple of visits and then when 2 years is up I will only have to go 1 time a year. Not a big deal, If I do leave the area I am in now he said that most of the bigger cities have Bariatric Dr's that can take care of emergencies etc. Of course if you research DRs before you have it done then that Dr may wonder why you are going elsewhere for the surgery. Just some thoughts. Sorry I can't help with the main questions. Keep digging for info, Call the clinics that are closer to you and ask them the questions you have listed here, they may be able to help you.

    Pre-op Diet Meltdown!

Hi, I am on day 5 of this 2 week diet (surgery on 10-2-11 with Doctor Marema of Flagler, St Augustine hospital. He has done over 5000 bariatric surgeries and helped develop the "spider". His diet is as follows: Breakfast: 8oz skim or 1%milk, 1/2 Protein shake, 4oz fruit Mid-morning: 1 Protein Drink Lunch" 6-8oz low fat, light yogurt, 4oz vegetable or fruit Afternoon: 1oz nuts or 2 tbsp Peanut Butter, or 1/2 cup Beans or hummus, and 4oz vegetable or fruit Dinner: 4oz lean protine (meat), 4oz vegetable with1 tbsp olive oil, 1/2 whole grain starch or 1 slice whole grain bread Evening: 8oz skim or 1% milk, 1/2 protein drink, 4oz fruit 100 oz of free liquid (chicken broth, Water, crystal light etc.) Fiber and protein supplements count toward your 100 oz of liquids. Also several different Vitamins as well as 5 grains of fiber supplement are required. His nurse said I didn't have to follow the order eactly. I could adjust it to my lifestyle. I'm not saying you should do this,as your Dr knows you best. But I trust my doctor and his diet seems to be less restrictive, (I don't know what else is on your diet). Anyway, I hope this helps. Keep in touch as I am not that far ahead of you. God Bless

    Gasssssss

It could last at least 6 weeks. I went to the ER bc I thought I had a blood clot but didn't, and the ER doc told me I was gassy (listening through stethoscope) and may have a leak. I though WTH? It wasn't he just didn't have any experience with bariatric surgery.

Chubtastic - I know you have stated that you've been to Kim Bariatric and saw Dr. Kim who was out of your network, they also have Dr Holden on staff who could be in your network or check out their MBA program if your insurance doesn't cover. Dr Kim did my sleeve in 2011 and I could not be happier!!

    Do you snack?

my <former> bariatric dr said meals 3x/day only. No Snacks. My regular dr disagreed and overrode that and told me to eat 5-6 small meals per day which makes more sense to me. Now, whether or not I DO is a different story. LOL
  22. I'm two and a half weeks away from surgery, and it still doesn't feel real! I started this journey over four years ago, researching my options and trying to get funding. The sleeve wasn't available to me then, so I was going to do RNY because that's what my aunt and a friend had. But, my aunt had some complications and she just looked sick, and it worried me. Plus, I'm in Southern Illinois and I would have had to drive to Chicago (five hours away) for the surgery and that also put me off. So, fast forward to 2009. I attended an info session at the new bariatric center in a town close by. I decided to go for the RNY. I was told I had to do a six month diet, so I started that and in the meantime, the surgeon was let go. So, this summer, I found out there was a new surgeon and had heard good things about him. So, I attended yet another info session and learned about the sleeve. I was convinced right way. I made my consultation and saw him for the first time on October 29th. I've gone through all the tests, got clearance from everything and I'm now scheduled for surgery on January 17th! I'm having a hard time this is actually going to happen, though. When I went for my consultation, I was put on the Fast Track (six weeks til surgery.) that was in October. But, I couldn't get my psych consult until the end of December, so they scheduled my surgery for January 10th. I went on 12/28 for psych and they didn't have me on the schedule! But, they got me in for the following and I got cleared by psych yesterday. In the meantime, my surgery was rescheduled for January 17th because my surgeon will be out of town. Then, I started freaking out because I'm in college and my classes (and my husband's classes) start January 18th. So I have to juggle classes starting and trying to get my kids to school while I'm in the hospital. It seems like Murphy's law is in effect, and I'm encountering all sorts of obstacles. So, again, I keep feeling like this is too good to be true! Am I really going to get my sleeve? I don't think I'll believe it until I wake up from surgery with my sleeve!

    All Nov 19 Sleevers!

It sounds like everyone is doing really awesome. To answer your vitamin question- I take 1 multivitamin twice a day and 1 500mg calcium citrate three times a day when I'm behaving myself. They are all chewable, and are bariatric advantage brand.

    Confused.com

All of my friends have been kind and supportive. I told my closest friends just about a week before surgery, and then gradually told others as it came up. The only person who was the slightest bit mean about it was a work colleague who is just a mean person sometimes. Anyway, I have to say that the slender folks among my friends and family were the most supportive and enthusiastic. Maybe because they really understand how much I was missing from life by being morbidly obese. As far as being angry with yourself about not being able to lose weight by diet and exercise alone, let that go. Obesity is influenced by many more factors than just diet and exercise, and once you get there, it is almost impossible for anyone to reach a normal weight without surgery. This recent study looked at obese people trying to lose weight -- bariatric surgery patients excluded -- and found that the odds of attaining and maintaining a normal body weight were astronomically tiny, like maybe the same as being struck by lighting or something. http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10.2105/AJPH.2015.302773 In my opinion, if someone's medical team agrees that they are a good candidate for bariatric surgery, then that is probably the smartest thing to do. I don't kick myself for not being able to lose weight "on my own." I kick myself for trying, for decades, to do it without the best medical treatment and refusing to consider surgery. Anyway, my social life has improved dramatically since I've lost weight. I'm more willing to go out and socialize and try new things. I enjoy talking to people instead of being focused on shoving food in my face. I'm still an introvert and always will be, but now I'm much more at ease in social settings and happier overall. That makes me a better friend. Good luck to you!
