    Any October Sleevers?

I am 10 days post op (Oct 7) and feel great. I am on week two of post op liquid diet. Started my liquid diet on September 30 and as of today, Oct 17, I am down 27 pounds. I’m excited. You can do this!!
  2. I had my sleeve surgery in 2013 and have had GERD 6 months after the surgery. I have been on omeprazole for 7 yrs. I went from 40 mg once a day to twice a day. My surgeon now feels that a revision is necessary to resolve this issue. I just meet with him on 10/14 and I am scheduled for surgery for 11/19 upon approval from my insurance company. I will have the revision and repair the hiatal hernia I have too. I did not think it would be this soon. I'm a little worried but looking forward to not having to worry about taking these pills and the effects if I dont. Alot of my family does not know I had the sleeve so now Im concerned about Thanksgiving when I will still be on pureed foods. Not sure what I will do but just praying all works out well. 3. My scars are still very noticeable in most areas (at time of this writing I am 10 months post plastics) Arms: these are what I consider the worst of my scars. They are the darkest and widest here. And the most raised. Oddly enough though, the parts of the scars that span both my armpits are almost totally gone. Weird. Tummy: this scar is dark, and for some reason is healing better in the middle (the part above my crotch) than at the sides (near the flanks). Boobs: the scars here are the best healed, while still dark, the are not as dark as the arms & tummy, and they are almost pretty much flat here. The scars around my nipple are also almost totally gone. All the areas that are still raised are the itchiest (doc says this means it is still healing?) Now I knew going in that it would take me longer than most for my scars to fade, which I am cool with. Most others you will find will have scars that are virtually invisible at the same stage as me.
  4. Phew! Just had a marathon dinner seating! The fam just spent the last 3+ hours eating and drinking and chatting at the table! That was a long one, even for us, lol Had a glass of wine, about a 3/4 cup of beef stew (beef, carrots, peas), a slice of peach-ricotta-tart (about 1/10 of the whole) with some pistachios on top. I made the tart from scratch, btw, and am quite proud of it! 724 calories for everything I ate (the wine and dessert took up the majority of the cals!) P.S. I also feel like i should put it out there (for the new folks) as a reminder that I am 2 years out and my weight loss phase days are long behind me, and have been maintaining my current weight for well over a year. Dunno why I feel the need to explain, but whatever... P.P.S the "593"g on the scale includes the weight of the bowl...forgot to zero the scale before I put my food in it...oopsies (The bowl weighs 488g).
  5. So I did the deed two days ago. Had it done in Mexico and still recovering in the hospital. I’m so ready to go home I can’t stand it. However, so glad I did this. I went from band to sleeve to bypass in an 11 year stretch. I’ve made a lot of mistakes and learned a lot about my body. My goals going forward are to take my food addictions a lot more seriously, and love myself enough to continue my level up phase in life. I’ve gained the Covid 19 (pounds) like everybody else, now it’s time to lose those as well as the other 70-80 lbs I need to shed. 😏 I’m looking forward to this new journey. I know a revision doesn’t take off as much weight as a virgin surgery. Luckily I don’t have a lot to lose.
  6. Err, we have COVID positive people in the department, me being one of them. I received a call from the lab 10 min before I planned leaving and they said that I had a "slightly positive test". Whatever that means. My first test on Tuesday was negative.

Anyway, 14 d of quarantine for me. So far a slightly sore throat that I only notice in the evening hours and a bit of a headache.

    *sigh*

Get well and please stay quarantine and don't be in such a hurry to leave the house, make sure that after the 14 days you feel well before going out. Most time if you test right after being slight positive, you will test positive again, so don't be in a hurry to retest. Take care of yourself ❤️

  7. I got my surgery date right after I completed my endoscopy which was the end of June. My surgeon's office didn't submit anything to insurance for precertification until about 2 weeks prior to my surgery. There were a few hiccups there due to an incorrect fax number, but it all worked out and I got my approval the day before. The endo is pretty easy and doesn't last more than 5 to 10 minutes. You lay down in the procedure room on your left side, they put an O2 mask on you with a tube that goes in your mouth to keep you from biting the scope, and then they give you the anesthesia and the next thing you know you are in the recovery room. Some people have a sore throat after, but I never did. For me it was a very easy procedure.
  8. What is it like to go into hospitals right now? Is it safe to go to the hospital during COVID-19 pandemic?
  9. Long post ahead. Putting it out there in hopes of being able to let go of it all. I am feeling blue this week. I know it is a combination of things, some related to being post-op and some not. It all has me feeling very vulnerable. Last Sunday I dropped a 25 pound weight on my foot at the gym. Thankfully I didn’t break anything, but the bruising has caused me pain all week and I haven’t been able to work out much. Oh endorphins, how I miss you. 😢 Now it seems I have a flare of Achilles tendinitis on the other leg, and can’t take nsaids. Icing it now. I know I should rest both the tendon and the foot, but I feel like I desperately need the endorphin fix as I have been so tearful and down. I am also missing the feeling of meaningful connections with friends right now too. We all live such busy lives it is really hard to find time to connect. I end up spending most of my free time with my husband, and he is awesome, but I think I am just needing to spend some time with female friends. Related to being post-op, I am struggling with not having anything to wear that fits me. I feel dumpy in anything I pull from my closet, and at the same time feel bad for feeling that way, as I know in my head how much better I look 65-ish pounds lighter. I definitely need to buy a few new items of clothing at this point, but don’t want waste money on stuff I can only wear for a month or two. I don’t do used clothing. It gives me the creeps for some stupid reason 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ To top it all off, yesterday my boss asked me to go back to working at home starting next week. I worked at home April-August doing a particularly unpleasant task on phone and computer. I got very good at doing it. In August I asked to come back to working in the clinic and my at home task was divided up amongst me and the other nurses I work with. Things have not gone nearly as smoothly with the task split up and the clinic where I work needs me to go back into my previous role. I know it is the best thing for the clinic where I work, but I am burned out on working in that role. My boss has promised me more support in my role and I really hope it happens. As of next Monday, I am back to working at home, Monday -Thursday for 10 hours days. I literally cried when I left the clinic yesterday knowing it would be a few months before I would be back. Dang...I am all teary-eyed again just writing all this down. Now inhale, exhale, let go.
  10. I could really do with some advice. I had gastric sleeve done April 2019. In 6 months I lost 6 stone (84 pounds) I was pleased with this as I had 3/4 stone left to lose. I started a medication around 6 months post op and it caused me to stop losing weight, fast forward a few months and I had gained two stone in a month due to my medication so I had to stop it. Ever since I’ve struggled hugely to lose weight I eat about 1,000-1200 calories a day and my restriction is still there. I’ve had no support from bariatric team or dietician, I need some advice on what I should eat, how many calories I should be having and how much exercise I should be doing. I don’t think I’m doing enough.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I stated walking for 2-3 minutes the same day. Around my house and in the drive way, around my yard. Now I am up to walking 5-10 minutes outside and I walked for 15 minutes in my neighborhood one day. I am certainly not walking as fast

  15. hi I am65 and getting my sleeve done on 10/27.It's better later than never.I predict I feel a whole lot younger than I do right now.Good Luck with your surgery.
  16. Today is day 2 of my 2 week pre-op liquid diet. I'm to have four shakes per day. To be honest, I'm friggin hungry. And I'm consumed with thoughts of food. My surgery is on 10/26. I figured this would be the hardest part, but man it sucks. Anyone else out there? Sent from my Pixel 2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  17. Hit a pretty awesome goal. When I started out in July of 2019 and decided to have WLS, I weighed 427 lbs. My last weekly weigh in I was 212.2. That means I am officially half the person I used to be. On another note, I am now officially overweight! You might ask why that is a good thing. I have spent almost all of my adult life with a BMI that put me in the obese category, but now with my weight loss my BMI is 29.6 which is considered overweight. When I started out my BMI was 60. My surgeon required me to get my BMI to 50 before the surgery so I lost 92 lbs between July 2019 and January 2020 and my BMI was about 48 at the time of my surgery. After surgery I have lost another 123 lbs. No secret, just follow your plan. Eat you protein first, meet your daily protein goals, exercise, exercise, exercise. I am doing a minimum of 30 minutes 5 days a week and usually shooting for 60 minutes daily of intense exercise. My only regret is that I didn't have WLS years earlier.
  18. There are some folks who stop by here occasionally ! Congratulations on your surgery and weight loss. I am 10 years out. Started at 54 years old and 320 ( probably higher at highest ) Had surgery at about 300 lbs. I had the surgery for the same reason, but have not had knee replacement. Wish I could say it cured my knees, but it didn't - but I move so much better and have less pain. No more do I need Rx for knee pain, but do use Advil/naproxin when needed. And with surgeon knowledge of taking them. I kept the majority of wt off, but had regain over the last 6 years.... of 45 pounds.... lost my brother and then my dad, a messy divorce, and life.... but took 14 months to lose the 45 pounds - 10 years out, and although I have added back more calories and carbs to keep my weight stable - I am continuing to lose a bit of weight still. So your new tool will continue to help you on your journey for years to come. I know you will do well - eat lots of protein and keep the veggies and fruit super fresh !!! It helps !!!
  19. Yes, a tilt test which most cardiologist’s office are able to do. You can do orthostatic vitals. Take blood pressure and pulse lying down. Sit up wait 5 minutes and take them again. Then stand for 10 minutes without walking and take them again. You are looking for an increase in heart rate of 30 beats per minute or a significant drop or rise in blood pressure. I have the Hyperadrenergic type and my blood pressure goes up with positional changes from lying to upright. Have you had a chance to google orthostatic intolerance after Bariatric surgery?
  20. First, if someone tells you what you are doing is inappropriate and not to your benefit and you may regret your choices, it is true. You want to think someone is being a jerk for telling you this, it's on you, not them. By the way, what is said in the first sentence is true, so I am a jerk. I've been called a jerk before so you may join good company here. I stuck completely and without flaw to my pre-op diet. My Doc was clear that if I didn't hit the required loss of 10 more pounds he would cancel my surgery. I was scared straight. Well, except for those one or five, well ten, or so, times I didn't. I gained 7 pounds. I was scared I was screwed right up until I talked to Doc before being wheeled in to surgery. If Doc weren't using my surgery as a teaching opportunity I'm sure he would have cancelled. I lucked out. Having said this, don't do what I did. Or at least as bad. It's not worth the terror. Do your honest best. Good luck. Tek

    Anyone for October 2020?

Morning everyone I had my sleeve yesterday 10/13 and I’m currently in hospital. Gassy and nauseated are my main symptoms . Besides that my pain is not as bad just being managed. I have to walk around today. I couldn’t do it last night .

Here On Out A Win, Win

+1 More anecdotal evidence: I looked positively skeletal (esp my face and neck) when I finished weight loss phase. Months later, I looked much more filled in (despite the fact that I even weighed 10+ lbs less later on). I suspect it was the introduction of some carbs back into my diet....

Here On Out A Win, Win

Firstly, congratulations are your weight loss. So wonderful. Apologies to those who love them, but protein shakes & powders are awful. I just couldn’t tolerate them at all. But, if you eat a balanced diet & include protein in every meal, you shouldn’t need protein powders or shakes. Plus, you get lots of other necessary nutrients eating real food. I aim for 50g a day based on my weight. (Some guideline recommend 0.8/kg, others 1g & others recommend 1.2g if you’re older or very physically active.) I get in about 10g at breakfast, 10-15g at lunch, 15+g afternoon snack (yogurt), 15-20g for dinner. If it’s a low day, may be I missed a meal or snack, or wasn’t hungry, I’ll have a protein bar for a late supper or some chia pudding. My dietician suggested adding skin milk powder to my milk to boost my protein & calories. I find it makes the milk taste sweeter, which I don’t like, but it’s fine for when I make chia pudding. (I whisk a big heaped soup spoon of milk powder in a cup of milk.) You might like to try that too instead of protein powders. I did lose more than I intended when I was trying to find my sweet spot to successfully maintain. It doesn’t take much for me to lose or gain so I’m very routine with what & when I eat. My doctors have suggested I put on a couple of kgs, but as that’s likely to happen over the next year or so, I’d rather not put weight on now & more again later. Plus, I actually have quite a small frame (now all the weight is gone). I’m really happy with my weight & size as it is. Catwoman7 is right. Many of us who do manage to lose 100% of our weight can look almost ‘too thin’ at first (you get told this a lot by well meaning family & friends - grrrr) but everything does settle again in time. Adding a few good multi/whole grain carbs to your diet in maintenance helps a lot. I think as you, & others, get used to your new body shape & size, you start to really see yourself as who you are now & the change doesn’t seem as extreme.

Here On Out A Win, Win

a lot of us who end up losing 100% of our excess weight look emaciated in year 2, but we don't by..or sometime during...year 3. Fat is redistributed a bit so you don't look as "drawn", and also, most people seem to have a 10-20 lb rebound after hitting bottom. So I wouldn't purposely try to gain weight now - just try to stabilize. my weight loss just kind of stopped on its own at about 20 months out - but I started out heavier than you did.

    Confused with Doubt

I am glad the responses helped. I think a lot of us had the same thoughts and worries. Food was a comfort and thinking of taking that away saddened and scared me, but your mindset really does change. I never thought mine would, but it did. Also during the surgery much of the "hunger hormone" called ghrelin is cut away, which helps with the cravings. I will say for the first few weeks after the surgery - I had phantom like cravings.. like my mind hadn't "caught" up to what was going on with my stomach. Even though I wasn't even close to hungry - I had these cravings, but that went away after a few weeks. It was bizarre, but I've read it is normal with some people. I had never been overweight until the last 8 years either. I was always tiny... sometimes TOO tiny, then it seemed like out of nowhere - I started gaining about 5-10 lbs each year and before I knew it - I was 192 lbs. It scared me. It definitely was food addiction - I just didn't realize it. I hope you decide to go through with the surgery, because it has been such an incredible thing for my life and health, but again - only you can determine whether you want it.
