  1. For me the weeks and days before surgery were harder than after surgery. It takes time to undo our behaviors and habits. Since your surgery date is so close, you undoubtably have taken many positive steps in the right direction, one little tiny half-step back is forgivable. So forgive yourself and know others are with you on this journey!

Hey! How is everyone doing? Today marks 2 months since my sleeve and I've loss almost 50 lbs from my pre-op diet. Overall, I feel great. I go for my blood work tomorrow so I hope everything checks out OK with that. I walk about 3-4x a week and attend a weekly Water aerobics class. I have to "UP" my exercise routine but as a mom of 3 (youngest being a toddler), it's just so hard to find the time. The weight doesn't slide off the way I envisioned, you definitely have to put in work to lose the weight but I have no regrets.

    Stall?

Maybe you're just not eating enough?! For me, a boost in calories always breaks a stall for me. Both pre and post op.
  5. My program requires six monthly meetings with the dietitian, four of which have to be in-person because they need to weigh me. Ugh! I'm in month 3 and haven't lost ANY weight yet because I've been eating up all the "bad stuff" in my cupboards and freezer (pot pies, frozen burritos, frozen meatballs, pasta, and many freezer bags filled with prepared meals. And lots of cereals too. I think I have 7 boxes of Special K Red Berries.) I went this route because it's very easy for me to lose weight, and I know that I can quickly drop the 12 pounds (220 to 208) the dietitian requires me to in order move forward with scheduling my surgery and beginning the two-week liquid diet. My February visit showed I had actually gained weight, up to 223, and I felt really embarrassed in front of my dietitian. I promised her I would lose at least 5 pounds before my next visit, which is coming up one week from today. So, starting yesterday, I abandoned all my cupboard and freezer food and have been crash-dieting (broth, fruit, a little lean chicken) just like in days of old. I figure after the 8 days, I'll step on that scale in front of her and we'll see at most 115 and I'll be in her good graces again. Then I can be a bad girl and keep working my way through the unhealthy stuff for 3 weeks, then crash diet again for my weigh-in. Yeah, I feel guilty doing this, and I know my dietitian wouldn't like it, but here in the forum I know I can be totally honest. You are my people! And I know you understand. It's important to point out, I live alone, which explains why I can't simply have others eat that food. Another main reason is that I'm a penny-pincher, and just won't throw it out UNTIL I'm in the final two weeks pre-op. That's the deadline. I have to toss it at that point because I absolutely do not want it around post-op! On the positive side, my progress so far includes: cutting my coffee from regular to half decaf, mastering eating slowly, not buying any more "naughty" foods, exercising 30 minutes every day, drinking at least 64 ozs of water every day, recording my starting body measurements (shocking!), and reading tons of threads in this forum. Good luck to all of you.

    December 2022 Buddies

It's March ....How's everybody doing? I'm feeling pretty good. Got out last week and started riding my bicycle again. It was great.
  7. Thanks @Spinoza! I’m starting Day 8 and so far, so good. It’s fun to say “this time next week, I’ll be in surgery!”
  8. I had sleeve done on Feb. 22nd. Almost 2 weeks postop now. I am doing really well. I've lost 15 lbs. as of today I am over the full liquids though. I go to the dr on Wed for follow up and pray I can move on to soft foods.
  9. Ok folks I want to pick your brains. I am 18 months out from surgery, I got really sick a couple weeks ago and my doctor put me on steroids and an antibiotic. I finished the course of meds in 10 days, and ever since then it has been nearly impossible to eat. I gained 6 pounds in water weight while ON the steroids and then proceeded to drop all that and 5 more pounds I did NOT want to lose just because I am not eating enough. I'm dangerously close to slipping into double-digit weights and I'd really like to stop this before I end up there. I've gone back to basics and have mostly been consuming things that are really soft like soup and making sure I chew everything very well, but my portion sizes are TINY (again, I'm 18 months out. My breakfast the other morning was 3/4 of a scrambled egg and a forkful of hash browns, as an example. I should be, and have been able to, eat more than that.) Every time I eat, no matter what it is, I get this sharp pain around the left side of my rib cage and my left shoulder has been aching for days. I went to my general practitioner (who himself is a gastric sleeve patient) who said that I probably am just having a harder time recovering from being ill because I'm not 20 anymore and that steroids can wreak havoc on our systems for weeks after we're done taking them, and sent me for some blood tests that I haven't gotten the results back yet from. Before anyone makes this suggestion, yes I am drinking shakes to supplement and I'm having a hard time getting even those down. I feel like I'm starving to death. I just want to not be in pain anymore.

    Stall?

Like everyone else said; stalls happen. They will happen again, follow your plan and they will also pass. But, 500-600 calories a day seems VERY LOW especially for exercising every day. You should check in with your Dietician/Nutritionist for guidance on calories. Not eating enough, could cause stalls along with other problems. Be safe and healthy. Best of luck.

5 days away from surgery and cheated

I was on my pre-surgical diet for two weeks and cheated a couple times. I'm not proud of myself nor do I recommend anyone not follow their doctor's advice, but I still lost 11 pounds during that period of time and no one said a word about anything being amiss when I went in for my procedure. Basically, I'd try your best not to do it again but eating one "cheat" meal is not going to undo everything.
  12. I found out that not onlY have I not lost weight, but I’ve put on 2lbs. I know it all takes time, but even after doing all the right things and sticking to the plan, my body is resistant to it. Thank you for all your help but I am beginning to regret this surgery. Maybe it doesn’t work for all bodies. I’ll let my surgeon know when I have my 6 week checkup and ask how long it’ll take to stretch my stomach back to normal. There’s no point in me eating minimal amounts anymore if I can’t even lose the weight - I may as well go back to how I was eating before and actually enjoy food again.

    Pre-op advice?

And …. You will have some pain & disconfirm but this passes in a few days. Don’t be surprised if you’re constipated or have unpleasant diarrhoea. The diarrhoea will pass but the constipation will remain. You may have nausea & may bring up something you ate/drank. Listen to your body while you are recovering & healing. If it says to rest today, rest. If it say you’re low in energy today, don’t push yourself to exercise. If it says it doesn’t like the taste or smell of something try something else (this can last a few weeks or a few months). Your tummy is sensitive while it is healing so treat it gently. Follow your plan. And don’t worry if you don’t get all your protein & fluid in as long as you’re close - it gets easier to do as you progress. And if something seems odd to you, contact your surgeon or their team. All the best.

    Stall?

Your weight loss is never a perfectly straight downward line. It zigs & zags girls up & down. Stalls, hormonal fluctuations, fluid retention, constipation, diarrhoea, etc. all affect our weight. Last month I was retaining so much fluid due to some very high humidity I couldn’t put my rings on. Took three days to pee it all out & get back to my usual weight range. We all have a natural fluctuation too. I mean we don’t eat the exact same thing, pee & poop the same volume & do the exact same activity every day. Stick to your plan & you’ll be fine.
  15. I had to do 2 weeks of 800 calories max - whatever way I wanted to do that was fine. There are so many different programmes it's almost unbelievable! Hope you get out the far end unscathed OP.
  16. My mom has bipolar and had gastric bypass almost ten years ago. She has always done well, which is encouraging, but definitely chat to your doctor and surgeon. I’ll be getting a gastric sleeve next week and had a really long chat with my surgeon about Wellbutrin and Lexapro (I take both). The first thing he asked was weather or not I was on the Wellbutrin XR (extended release). I agree with another poster that extended release meds should be monitored differently, but only your doctor will truly know. Good luck to you!
  17. Haha “hell week” is right. I’m not sure if a liquid diet would be better (as Elidh said, fewer choices = easier?) or the freedom to eat what you want as long as it fits specific macros. Heck, even macros gave me heck recently. My brain is bouncing back, but A couple days ago, I wouldn’t have remembered my middle name without a drivers license 😅😆

    Pre-op advice?

I’m on day 4 after surgery last Wednesday. Here are my thoughts based on what I just experienced. On day of surgery, when you wake up, don’t panic. This day and the next day before going home you will feel like total crap. Don’t panic! It gets better quick. You will have pain, pressure, poking nurses, doctors stopping in, house cleaning coming in, sheesh…too much. Don’t panic! Lol Your first full day home will be very uncomfortable. You will be recovering from surgery, working on almost no sleep, and trying to understand your new plumbing. I had anxiety from the anesthesia, was wicked tired, and cranky. Don’t panic! Don’t worry about hitting goals on these first two days, people rarely do. Take meds on time, create a schedule. I was on oxy and nausea meds for two days. By day three only Tylenol. See if you prefer hot or cold liquids. I found warm better. You will feel like an elephant is sitting on your chest…pressure from the gas. Don’t panic, it’s normal and will go away. Even being prepared on this and reading for 5 months, it was bad. Every swallow hurt a bit (pressure flare) but it eases slowly. By day 4 I feel great, almost normal even. Isn’t the human body amazing? Full liquids, full protein, no meds. Remember don’t panic! There were times I wanted too!! (alright, I did a little, most do) Good luck, you got this!”
  19. This is something you would need to talk to your HR dept about. My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that each company negotiates their rates with the insurance company, and there are things they can choose to not cover in order to keep the costs down for ALL employees. They can't just add it for one person. Bariatric surgery is getting more common, so maybe your employer might choose to add it durning the next open enrollment period, or, to cut rising costs, eliminate services. Unless you have a life event (like loosing your job, marriage, birth of a child etc) your husband can only add you to his plan during open enrollment. And your company's plan can't change until the next open enrollment. Most companies that wouldn't be effective until Jan 1 2024 (but not all, my company has open enrollment in the spring) Find out first if your husbands plan even covers it, and what the deductible/co-pay would be. You could start all the presurgery requirements now, as that usually takes about 6 months. Sounds like IF, everything works out, the soonest you could have the surgery under insurance (and a lot of things could go wrong to not align) would be Jan 2024. Or, do self pay and you could be recovering in a matter of weeks. There are low to 0 interest medical financing plans, and you can even pay those bills with an HSA or FSA card. It all depends on your financial situation and patience. I totally understand your disappointment, I felt the same way when I found out it wasn't covered under my insurance. I had determined the VSG was the right path for me and had my hopes up, and was crushed. I didn't want to wait any longer, and self pay was the best option.
  20. I had my sleeve on the 8th and have been doing well this last week. The only medication I have an issue with is the multivitamin/horse pill 🤣

    Pre-op advice?

Don't overthink it. You will be concentrating on getting your fluids and protein in. Walk around as much as you can to shift the gas pains. Sleep when you are not doing any of these things. Drinking different temperatures can help. Your second week is so much easier. Everyone gets nervous, we are human and are built to fear the unknown. The hospital staff will put you at ease. Good luck

    Pregnancy after WLS

Just for a little update, I’m almost 1 year post op and about 34 weeks pregnant. I had lost a few pounds during my first trimester and so from my actual starting weight when I found out I was pregnant, I still have only gained about 20lbs (I was close to goal weight when I found out I was pregnant, 185lbs at 5’11). I am finding that I cant each as much as I have been the closer I get to my due date as I am out of space. My blood pressure has been consistently low, 110/70 and he is measuring in the 44th percentile.

    Feb sleeves unite!

I'm sending lots of love and prayers for you. I too sometimes think that I feel regret. I was sleeved on 1/26/23 and had many complications. I think back to why I got the procedure to help me see things differently. I focus on the goal and what it could be and not what it currently is. I'm happy that you are able to eat and drink. Even though it may take you some time. I'm still on the liquid diet phase one as I can't keep anything down. I have had 2 more upper gis and 1 endoscopy since my procedure to see what is causing my many issues. So far it seems that my sleeve is too narrow so they dilated it a few. As well as my surgeon said my stomach twisted after my sleeve procedure. Which is very rare but it happens. So I'm still in the midst of figuring out how or why or if things will subside. I do hope to be able to puréed something in the near future. I say this to say that no matter how hard we think we may have it there is someone out there who have it two or three times as bad. With all of this I also have gerd and broke out really bad on my face and chest. The fee sips of water that i'm able to tolerate Im thankful for. I try to remain positive because I don't know what the future hold. I just know that I want to be safe and healthy and of course happy. Hang in there as many have told me. I believe this too shall pass. I hope and pray for you that things ease up for you. It can definitely be hard and challenging with all the obstacles and with every one being different. You got this and I'm here for you. Please don't hesitate to reach out. xo

    Pre-op advice?

Hydration, walking, and protein. That’s pretty much all you need to know! Have a variety of sugar free drinks, broth, and popsicles at home, every ounce counts and your body needs it! Some people (including myself) struggle with drinking plain water right after surgery so having the variety definitely helped. My surgeon wanted two 20 minute walks a day as soon as I went home. When the weather was bad I went to Walmart, Kohl’s, or target to do some laps so that I could get 20 minutes of walking in. Protein shakes and yogurt were about all I had for the first two weeks, so maybe pick out a few different kinds so that it doesn’t get monotonous. Best of luck!!

    Stall?

Don't cut back on your calories unless your team told you to. You are so low that your body will be holding onto the nourishment to counteract the exercise you are doing. Trusting the process is a tough learning curve that we all have to learn. Hold your nerve, the stall will break
