Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

I had my surgery almost three years ago & have three friend who’ve also had sleeve surgery in the last 2-4 yrs. They haven’t developed Gerd or the lesser reflux. I had mild reflux before my surgery but managed it successfully through my food & drink choices. I only had issues if I made bad choices like too much champagne or too many gin & tonics - the bubbles groan. Yes, I still have reflux though I experience different symptoms but again not that severe. I take a PPI every day now & for about 3 days out of 4 that’s enough. I get some burning in my throat late at night a couple of times a week but it’s not that bad. I would be included in that 30% stat even though I had it before, as many obese people do, & it’s still pretty mild. This is my experience. We’re all different & you can never predict how you will react to the surgery & the changes to your digestive system. I’m one of the 35% who developed gall stones but I could have developed them because of the weight loss, menopause or because I have Gilbert’s. If your existing reflux is severe enough to make you sick when you have an attack, my thought would be that you’re not a candidate for a sleeve. But that’s my opinion & I’m not a medical person. Do your research, ask questions. All surgeries have side effects & there’ll be pros & cons for all of the weight loss surgery options too. Remember, you have the right to ask for which ever surgery you think may be best for you. All the best.
  2. I just need to vent because im so upset about this sometimes. Does anyone deal with negative comments from family members about your surgery? It's not so much about the fact that I got surgery but moreso constant questioning of my success. Like they're always like "what's gonna stop you from just gaining it all back?" "You might just go back to your old habits." "How are things gonna be any different this time?" "You got to the point of needing weight loss surgery to lose weight so how can you be successful?" That's actually what my brother just said to me and it made me so sad and upset. I've been working so hard to do it right this time but they just discredit me like it's another half baked idea. I wish they'd just tell me I got this and not question my dedication. I put in so much work to get where I am both mentally and physically. I made a comment about making sugar free brownie dip for my birthday and my family member said "isn't that what got you to this point in the first place, wanting to eat things like that?" And it just broke me like I'm not allowed to still celebrate things with food. The all or nothing mindset is what drove my binge eating for years. All I want is to have a healthy relationship with all food and I'm finally in a place where I feel like I can, and then these comments are made. They make me feel like a failure or that I'm thinking incorrectly. I know deep down how far I've come but some days it really gets to me and tears me down. I'm sorry at this point I'm just venting. I just wish they'd recognize my successes and not constantly question my ability. Ughhhh Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

When researching studies about any weight loss surgery, it helps to find studies that are recent. Within a year or two published. Otherwise, you might not get the most up to date, accurate data. One of the studies posted was from 2015. That seems a bit old, and the data may have changed from 2015. That's almost 7 years old.

    Dreaded hair loss - question

I'm six months out. I see a lot of hair in my comb and in the sink, but it only looks thinner on some days, although I'm not sure why. My hair is very short, and I think that helps it be less noticeable when it sheds. No one else has noticed my hair getting thinner - I asked my hairdresser and he said he couldn't tell, but I am not sure. I always take my multivitamins and almost always get 70+ g of protein. We were told that there really isn't anything you can do to prevent hair loss. Taking extra biotin can mess up certain lab levels, too. As far as I can tell, I have just been lucky - so far!

    Weight loss stall

If you are very heavy, you need a lot more calories to NOT be in a calorie deficit. 2800 calories would be if a thin person ran a marathon. If you are heavier, you burn more calories with exercise. Plus, I didn't say it was all fat. When people first start losing weight there is a lot of water loss.
  7. I am a year out and I don’t like all the attention about my weight either. The novelty wears off though and people stop commenting about it. When they say that they think you have lost enough and not to get too small, though, just say that you are working with a doctor and you will stick to their advise about what weight is healthy for you. Being a private person too I totally get it but it’s worth going through that to get all the benefits that weight loss brings.

Welcome! I’m with you on the weight loss/re-gain game. Hopefully the surgery can help with the appetite issue so that we can focus on the emotional eating aspect!
  10. I used to be on here back in 2012, I had the Lap Band done, but last year had to have it removed. Not sure if it was Covid or all the issues I had before and after surgery this past year but I have now ended with Gastroparesis. Or slow/ delayed emptying. My Gastro is sending me to weight loss surgery as I think he said the Bypass seems to help the problem. I fit the bill for weight loss surgery with out this issue, BMI, diabetes etc. . My question involves digestion. Does anyone know how it affects the bowels ? I don’t want to live in the bathroom . Did that almost a year Now try to eat soft foods that will digest quickly and hopefully not cause staying in the John. It seems if you only eat a cupful - it would move in a few minutes if you are missing part of your intestines. I’m not sure, I would appreciate any information on this. Thanks

    Dreaded hair loss - question

I kept my protein intake high (80g) & took my vitamins and didn’t have hair loss. I feel like there’s a lot of hair on my bathroom floor, but my actual hair looks the same as always. (Sleeve 6/30/2021)

    Hair falling out

My surgical team have advised the same. Hair loss/fall is bound to happen but they'll eventually stop and go back to your usual. Till then continue with the protein/vitamins. I was told not to waste money on extra supplements since they don't make much difference.

    Dreaded hair loss - question

My hair was pretty much a casualty of WLS. I lost most of my hair and it hasn't grown back. My surgeon speculates that my hair fell out due to the normal telogen effluvium that comes with drastic weight loss. Then it didn't grow back due to age-related hair loss I would have had anyway (I'm 57). So the surgey sped up the hair loss and I lost it all at once, rather than gradually over a couple of years. But my experience is unusual and I wouldn't take back the 130 pounds I've lost to get my hair back!

    Hair falling out

From what my team said. Nothing will help with the hair loss. The supplements will help with the hair that grows back in to make it stronger and healthier but it won’t help the accelerated loss unfortunately. I wonder for those reading this that are pre op if taking it pre surgery would help prevent it??

    Weight loss stall

Hey! I'm about one month post op (gastric bypass feb 14). I've only lost about 23 lbs post op. I was at 309 when I went in for surgery. I think my weight was like 314 right after surgery because of all the fluids though. Anyway I'm getting annoyed because I've been in between 287 and 286 for the last 2 weeks. I am eating more calories now but not nearly enough to gain or even stall. I have about 700-800 calories a day right now. Is this normal to stall out so early? I try incorporating exercise in my daily routine but I'm still dealing with a lot of fatigue and lightheadedness from anemia so I feel terrible whenever I really exert myself. Any advice or tips? Thanks! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    estimated weight loss

Chances are the weight loss will slow and she will level out naturally as she gets closer to a healthy weight but if not she can always work with the nutritionist to add in healthy calories to get to a balance that we call maintenance when she gets to a weight that her and her doctor feel is best. Some people shoot for a weight that is ten to 15 pounds lower than they want because of regain that happens to most of us.

    Any Regrets?

Okay first of all, I never commented that anyone who does not agree with me is, "foolish and childish." My comment >>> And there's also other weight loss surgeries than the sleeve. Each surgery has it's own benefits and risks. It's best to get all of the information and read about personal outcomes to help decide which surgery is best for you or if surgery is even an option. But discounting real side effects/complications of wls is just foolish and chidlish. I commented that discounting real side effects/complications of wls is just foolish and childish. Secondly, "texts" as in typed comments on this site. Such as this the ead when you were being patronizing. Thirdly, I never once said anyone should NOT get VSG. Not once. Please show me where I typed that. I simply said... "Each surgery has its own benefits and risks. It's best to get all of the information and read about personal outcomes to help decide which surgery is best for you or if surgery is even an option." I posted ONE study. It's food for thought for those considering any weight loss surgery. I don't "keep quoting one study" I posted one once. You can't seem to make a viable rebuttal in this thread. You seem to be confusing me for saying things I didn't say and quoting studies that I didn't post. 🤦‍♀️

Those reactions are possibly just jealousy/envy rearing its ugly head. It happens, unfortunately. And yeah that does seem like a lot of weight loss per week that far out. Maybe she should reach out to her nutritionist and see what they say.

    Any Regrets?

🤦‍♀️ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31279562/#:~:text=Background%3A The development of gastroesophageal,LSG is up to 35%. 35% is more than 1/3 of sleeve patients. That seems significant to me. And yes, it's not typical GERD. Please stop being so condescending on these posts. I've noticed that even via text you are very condescending. The point of these threads is to be informative and supportive. It's not my surgery vs your surgery, etc. We're sharing information (often our personal experiences from years of living with weight loss surgery) to allow people to make informed decisions and to sit back and type, "GERD, yes, but to the point you mention, absolutely not. I would say it is extremely rare and the medical professionals I spoke to confirm that." It is not rare. When patients experience post weight loss surgery GERD it is not typical. The strongest PPI's on a double dose doesn't touch it.

I only mentioned the support part because it happens. If you read this thread, you'll get an understanding what, we the weight loss surgery patients often deal with from those closest to us. And also this calculator for weight loss surgery can give you a guesstimate of what she might weigh when her body settles on its new weight. https://www.obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-bypass/how-much-can-i-expect-to-lose I plugged in her info and it says at 18 months out, 20% of sleeve patients weigh 185. Check it out for yourself. Just make sure you're looking at the correct surgery. It gives options for Band, Bypass and Sleeve.

    Where’s the weight loss??

You answered your own question. I seem to be posting this on every thread lately but ...you don't (I hope) want to lose weight, you want to lose fat (seems people are really scared of that word. It's fat loss surgery. Weight loss surgery is leg amputation.) If you ate 600 calories in a day, you lost fat that day, plain and simple. And you didn't lose 10lb of fat that first week. You didn't lose close to that. Your fat loss has almost certainly been constant or near constant each day so far. Others have explained why but the first week you probably lost 5lb or more of inflammation weight. Unpopular advice: stop weighing yourself. Eat protein, drink water. Walk gently and often. Smile.

    Any Regrets?

Post weight loss surgery GERD is real. GERD so bad that PPI's can't touch it. PPI's have very bad side effects. I got a kidney stone from overuse of PPI's for post weight loss surgery GERD. GERD is causing wls patients to get Barrett's esophagus and Barrett's esophagus can become esophageal cancer. These are serious effects of weight loss surgery that should be taken seriously and all potential weight loss surgery patients should be aware that it's not just heartburn or reflux and depending on which surgery you choose, it could happen to you... It's an individual decision that one must weigh their own personal comorbidities/issues for deciding on wls against the benefits and risks of wls. And there's also other weight loss surgeries than the sleeve. Each surgery has it's own benefits and risks. It's best to get all of the information and read about personal outcomes to help decide which surgery is best for you or if surgery is even an option. But discounting real side effects/complications of wls is just foolish and chidlish.

It's difficult to answer this question because you told us she now weighs 209 pounds, but you failed to give her height. Is she 5'10, 5'? Which surgery did she have? Why are you scared she's going to lose too much weight? Maybe you're just not used to her being at a "healthy weight." I hope you're supporting her weight loss journey to a new, healthier weight and not badgering her about "losing too much weight" There's nothing worse than someone close to you not being supportive when you're trying to become healthier. J/s.

    Nerves!

This is the entire point of getting weight loss surgery. To help you get healthier. These are your baseline labs. At one of your upcoming post op visit, possibly your one year post op appointment, your doctor will reorder these tests and show you how much improvement you have made after losing weight. It's not about denying you for weight loss surgery.
