    What Would You Do?

    I've posted this on every forum where appropriate, and I'm gonna again: I'm always astounded at the lack of consensus these bariatric doctors have. Everything is waaaay all over the map concerning pre-op and post op diet requirements. Some allow this, others ban that...I really wish they'd get together at some symposium and come up with some guidelines they all would use and then maybe things would be less confusing for their patients!
  2. Ok I had surgery on Jan 27 2020 so I am 3 weeks out and have lost 32 lbs  I wish I had this done sooner. Now just trying to figure out different things to eat so I am not eating the same thing over and over. I did order some stuff today from the Bariatric Store and that stuff should be here in time for my next phase. I have a goal of 50 lbs by the first of June hope that is attainable. Good luck to every one on this journey

    Enjoying food is gone?

    So I'm just starting to eat real solid foods again, and honestly, my taste buds have changed a little bit, but I really enjoy food still. Taking the time to eat slowly kinda lets me savor it? I've been experimenting with bariatric and keto recipes and I'm finding some really nice and tasty things that are well within the dietitian's guidelines. You may have a few things that don't taste as good as they used to (I'm kind of sad that fish for me doesn't taste really good), but things you didn't like before might taste good now, too (I like cooked spinach all of a sudden). It's a lot of experimenting and guessing and seeing what your new body reacts well with.

    Pancakes!

    I was so excited to try these- I know, I know, carbs are still not good, but these are high protein and I can only have a small amount... I found it on a bariatric website, and guys, these are AMAZING. (I didn't include the berries in mine, so the carbs are closer to about 5 for what I made, and I used 1/2cup of liquid egg whites instead of 3/4cup, so it tasted closer to real pancakes rather than eggy.) https://www.froedtert.com/bariatric-surgery/recipes/peanut-butter-jelly-pancakes Peanut Butter and Jelly Pancakes Weight Management & Bariatrics SERVINGS: 4 INGREDIENTS ½ cup low-fat cottage cheese ½ cup instant oatmeal 2 tablespoons powdered peanuts 4 large egg whites 1 cup frozen mixed berry blend DIRECTIONS Put Items in a blender in this order: cottage cheese, oatmeal, powdered peanuts and egg whites. Turn on blender and blend until smooth like pancake batter. Pour into a bowl and fold in berry fruit mix. Use cooking spray in skillet. Makes 4 to 7 pancakes depending on size.   5. My insurance requires a minimum of 6 consecutive months of physical or non physical weight loss program. See excerpt from my instance policy below. Does anyone know if I could use My Fitness Pal to show 6+ mo the of weight loss? I have 6 consecutive months from about a year ago and lost about 20 pounds but have gained it back. I am 5’2 BMI 40. I would like to do the surgery in early July but just started with my practice on February 3 and that puts 6 months at aug 3. I have a major work event in September and the timing doesn’t allow for surgery before the event. If I cannot do surgery in July I will have to wait till early October. :( The document must include that the patient participated in a structured, professionally supervised (physician or non-physician) weight-loss program for a minimum of six consecutive months within the last four years prior to the recommendation for bariatric surgery.

    Seeking Best Self-Pay Doctors in Orlando

    If your going to make the self-investment and go the self-pay rout for bariatric surgery I would not let any geographical restrictions get in my way. The surgeon and facility you feel the most comfortable with may be within driving distance. I am going self-pay myself and currently I am favoring a facility that is about a 5-hour drive away. You would be surprised on how many bariatric offices have resources for out of area patients.

    Thank you for responding! Yes, I was looking into dr Ariel Ortiz at occ. happy you had a positive experience. he has great reviews. a friend had it done with dr cueva at renewal bariatrics. Had a very good experience. When I called them the person I spoke to was much clearer than the person I spoke to at occ. also dr cueva is $2500 less. I would pay if necessary more money, but if I don’t need to why should I the only reviews I found about him were all positive but they were on renewal bariatrics Facebook page. I’m having a hard time making a decision.

    @Ginanatucci Glad you enjoyed your time in Italy. You are almost two years out. Do you need to work off just the 8 pounds? Or do you need to lose more than that? Five year out, All I can offer is what works for me. If you need to lose more than 8 pounds - Go back to bariatric basics. Eat the food on your dietitians plan, hydrate, log food in an app and exercise If you are maintaining and need to work off an 8 pound gain - Log and stay with in your dieticians weight loss calories and macros My carbs are around 55 to 66 grams. Yes, I have a half a cup of of whole grain oats. I make sure my carbs hit my range for the day. google bariatric friendly recipes. It may help if you are in a food rut.

    Fast track gastric sleeve

    Blossom Bariatrics. I paid 15,000 for my surgery, but if you have insurance, it's usually about $6,500-ish. Look up their fast track program. They provide drivers, hotel, testing, surgery, and iv therapy. There is other stuff, too, but I can't remember off the top of my head, but they're all fantastic and great to work with.

  11. See what kind of insurance you have. If you have PPO go directly to to the Bariatric surgeon. That will start your first weight check in and they know the exact process. I skipped my primary.

    Still a virgin at 46

    I’ve never admitted these things to anyone, let alone on a public forum. You are not alone though. I’ve struggled almost all my life with chronic illness (immunodeficiency) starting in childhood, developing many medical conditions and symptoms over the years, disability, metabolic disorders, always fighting my weight, my self image, being on the autism spectrum, adhd, ocd and so on. But through it all, through a rough childhood. My own health challenges, my mother having spine surgeries and needing my help and support. I never had a life. I just have, I guess ... survived. I fought to lose weight alone - I guess it’s going on twelve years ago now if I had to guess. But never could hang on to it. I found myself losing ground. It was either fight for Bariatric surgery as a tool to finally help me or totally give up. But will it fix the rest of me? Those deep rooted insecurities? My separation from the rest of the world due to chronic illness? I honestly cannot say that weight loss will fix these things. Especially not my chronic illness or disability. It’s like my doctor expecting miraculous changes when I just wanted to ease the burden on my body and at least be a healthy weight to better navigate. it’s easy enough for people to say get out of your comfort zone. Been there done that, it’s gotten me nowhere but disaster and my chronic illness deeper into a decline. Of course this is just from my perspective. I’m not in a situation where I meet people. I can’t put myself out there. It’s not that simple. Nor is it Even for healthy people to do so. I’ve never discussed it and I won’t even flat out say my own situation in detail either since this is a public forum because people can be condescending in their response to something like this. I remember someone once telling me that she thought I liked being stuck. As if I haven’t spent my whole life fighting every step of the way. sometimes you need to just step back from yourself and take an objective look at the why of it all, what your hopes and expectations are, and where to go from there. Decide that you are worth it and take the leap forward and maybe you will find where you want to be.
  13. Still on all liquids, but I am thinking I'd like to get a really good bariatric cookbook for when I get on solid foods. Suggestions for ones that are good, or warnings for ones that are "don't waste your time". I am a pretty good cook.

    yes. Start with your primary care physician. As the above person said, he or she will have to do a referral to a bariatric surgeon. As far as insurance coverage, call your insurance company and ask if they cover it (actually, I'd probably do that first...)

    Anxious to get approved.

    My whole entire process from start to finish was 5 months. It only required 3 months of visits and consultations but the last two were from getting insurance approval and scheduling (it was kinda a cluster-you-know-what). But I finally have my surgery date of February 25th. Insurance approved it right away, but I also have a BMI of 54. So it's almost life or death for me. I also have gerd and a hiatal hernia. My bariatric surgeon said he would just fix it while he was in there doing the bypass. Anyways, I have Medicaid from NC and it was very short and sweet. But it's entirely up to your provider being vigilant enough to fight for you with the insurance company. I would be on top of everything. It sounds like you have a good case though, and I genuinely hope you get approved!

    Make an appt with your primary physician, and then have them give you a referral to a bariatric surgeon. I gave myself the out when I first went, told myself I wasn't 100% sure if I wanted to go through with it, i didn't have too. But i made myself commit to the process, knowing it would take 6 to 8 months (depending on what your insurance requires. Money required 6 months of appts with a dietitian, and after those were finished then a few other appts with my 0rimary to have an ekg and a physical). It isn't a fast process. I started last July, and finally am starting my pre-OP diet monday, surgery scheduled for march 3. So this is my long way of saying call and make an appt and get the ball rolling! Good luck!

  19. I’ve decided I want to go for the gastric sleeve, after trying to diet for years and failing at losing much weight. I’ve done a lot of research, but I still don’t know where to start the process! do I go to my primary care doctor? Do I call the Bariatric surgery center directly? How do I find out if then insurance I have will cover some of it? It was a hard decision for me to even decide it’s what I want to do, but I know it’s the right choice.     Just Venting... Again!

    I tried it in my early 20’s but maybe I should give it another whirl. And yes! Stress is a big factor here. It seems like as of late if I’m not worried about school I’m worried about being approved for surgery. I keep telling myself what’s meant to be will be, but for me that’s easier said than done. Luckily I got a call from the bariatric center letting me know that they’ve made a note of the med change & all aware that mirtazapine causes weight gain. I’m determined to plow through this because I really want this!

    Hi Bethy1234, There are 2 Dr. Ortiz's that do Bariatric surgery. I had mine done by Dr. Ariel Ortiz at OCC, he did a fantastic job. I have had no negative side effects from the surgery and highly recommend him to anyone considering the VSG.
  22. I was wondering for those of you who had surgery in Mexico how you are handling your post op care? I had surgery in Puerto Vallarta and saw my PCP one week after surgery, then I'll see her every 3 months for labs. If I have any problems I'm to call her immediately and she'll refer me to a bariatric specialist. I'm hoping this is sufficient, but despite the fact that my surgery team is accessible via email or phone, it's not the same as your surgeon being local.

    I’m paying out of pocket through Blossom Bariatric and it’s $9499 bc they are estimating they can get our insurance to pay the difference up to their $15k fee. The deal with Blossom is if your insurance doesn’t pay the difference then you only pay the amount they quoted you. If you’re 100% cash it’s $15k.

    I did. I did the fast track program through Blossom Bariatrics in Las Vegas Nevada... I don't have insurance, so my total cost was $15,000, but I know they offer it for around $6500 with insurance if it's approved.

    Check for insurance coverage of WLS➡ Primary physician ➡ Get a referral to Bariatric surgeon ➡ Decide if its right for you ➡ Eat at favorite restaurant ➡ Begin required diet/testing ➡ Wonder if you can just do it "naturally"➡ Tell family/friends ➡ Hear horror stories ➡ Eat at your second favorite restaurant ➡ Gain 5lbs & decide it's time to get serious ➡ Complete all prerequisites ➡ Wait for insurance approval & receive it ➡ Schedule surgery ➡ Wonder if you should just do it "naturally" ➡ Decide to do it anyway ➡ Start and finish some form of pre-op diet ➡ Have surgery ➡ *The rest is up to you* Good Luck 🌈
