Will relationship go from bad to worse?

The weight loss won't just change you, it will change him too. He will likely see that you are losing weight and get insecure about your new found confidence. How he handles that insecurity is the wild card factor so to speak. Keep your head up and do what is best for you and your health, everything else will work out one way or another.

Being a nurse with crazy hours

I'm in IT which has crazy hours far too often. There have been multiple occasions when I went to work Monday morning and didn't leave the office until Saturday evening. I honestly didn't worry about exercise, though when I lost enough weight I did run quite a but. I found it mentally refreshing and it was a great start to the day. Everything about food in our situations is all about planning ahead: 1) I prepared a week of work meals and have them packaged ready to grab and go. Make things you will really enjoy so that between your meal will win over anything at work. One of my favorite foods is Mongolian BBQ which I get from the local restaurant, which I can split easily into 4 meals. It was a great lunch on 'those' days; 2) If snacks are on your plan, handle them the same was as meals. My plan didn't include snacks so this was not an issue for me; 3) Eating out wasn't a problem food-wise as there's always something on the menu that would fit into my plan and I'd still exercise portion control. Leaving food on the plate is not the end of the world. If it's really good I'd get the left-overs to-go and eat it again for the next meal (or three); 4) Ordering out can be a bit tougher if your not ordering for yourself. If the food ordered can fit into your plan then portion control is the order of the day again. If the food doesn't fit into your plan then you don't have to eat the communal meal, just eat the meal your brought and socialize. 5) Keep 'emergency' food in your private area. I keep a couple Hormel Beef Stews in my desk, no refrigeration required and they keep for months, and they don't taste bad. I just looked and the Beef Stews expire in Feb of next year. I don't keep snacks but if they're on your plan keep some snacks available that fit into your plan. I don't do protein drinks but here at work milk is available so I also have a couple zip locks with protein powder, again, just in case; Work very, very hard the first 3 months [6 is better] to stay on plan. You will get the positive reinforcement of losing weight. This is how your plan becomes normal and how you will eventually just naturally avoid things off plan. Good luck, Tek

Will relationship go from bad to worse?

like someone above said, the relationship itself may not get worse (although it COULD), but losing weight tends to give people more confidence and the realization that they have other choices and don't have to put up with the crap any more.
  4. I understand your frustration. Remember that post-surgery swelling and lower grade inflammatory (even without water retention, which is also a thing) can contribute with a lot of extra weight in the first 4-6 weeks. I haven’t had much of that now, but I definitely did after I had my second c-section in 2019 — three weeks later I was still carrying 20-25 lbs of swelling/fluid, then one week later it all disappeared almost overnight. What was your starting BMI? If you were a “lightweight” that could also be a contributing factor. But some people just lose weight more slowly after surgery, nothing wrong with that either. ❤️ Hopefully you’re starting to feel better in other ways?
  5. Yay, another January 19th! I’m 5’9” and down 12 lbs since surgery and at least 30 lbs down since my pre-op diet started on December 22. My scale didn’t go beyond 400 lbs so I don’t actually know my highest weight, only that I was at least 410 lbs in late November 2022 (on the hospital’s scale). My incisions are also healing nicely but yeah mine are also really itchy, which is a great thing as it means the nerve ends are healing like they should. I’m having my stitches removed next Thursday.
  6. As others have stated; it depends on a number of factors and is individual to each person, I'm 5'4" and lost a bit over 120lbs. My weight at my first consultation with Dr. LoMonaco was 141lbs and he told me not to lose any more (never had I heard those words from a man...). I had a lower body lift, arm & outer thigh lift and breast reconstruction. He told me he took off between 4-5lbs. No liposuction needed.
  7. I see a lot of January 18th and 20th, but did anyone else have surgery on the 19th? Also, anyone else having surgery in two steps? I had VSG as a first step procedure and within 12-18 months (whenever I stop losing weight) I’ll be having either the traditional DS or the SADI.

Will relationship go from bad to worse?

I am so sorry that you are in this pickle. You will get a boost of confidence as soon as the weight starts to fall off and your surgery has healed. You will feel like a new woman. I always say plan ahead, get your ducks in a row. See a divorce lawyer, chat to the bank, etc. Do what you need to do incase this relationship fails. Use this man till your are through the surgery, he is using you.

Will relationship go from bad to worse?

@hop_scotch and @arabesque, thank you for the kind words. I don’t know if right now I don’t have confidence or what. I just don’t feel like myself anymore since I’ve gained all this weight. You’re right, it’s time to put me and my children first.

    Hunger coming back

The hunger urges do come back any where from around 6 to 12 months +/-. As @SkinnyMingo1408 said the surgery is a tool & you can’t rely on the the temporary benefits like reduction of hunger & appetite which don’t last. The honeymoon period is an opportunity to establish new eating habits, introduce new more nutritious foods & cooking methods, reflect on what drives you to eat, etc. Is what you feel real hunger or head hunger? Is there a reason you’re hungry (late for a meal, ate a small portion at a previous meal, missed a meal, been very active)? Are you wanting to eat a specific food, texture or flavour? (This is head hunger not real hunger.) If you are eating regularly, are eating nutrient dense food in recommended portion sizes you shouldn’t be feeling so much hunger you have trouble controlling the urge & are driven to eat. Do you still measure & track everything you eat? Have a chat with your dietician to review your food choices, portion sizes & calorie intake to ensure you on track. Maybe finding a therapist will help too. Many find therapy very beneficial in understanding their eating habits, what drives them to eat & the reason behind them. The head work really is the hardest part of weight loss.

    Constipation

Constipation is very common. Find a good soluble non swelling fibre supplement - I used Benefibre - & add it to your diet every day. Add more vegetables to your diet as you’re able, look to whole & multi grains in the carbs you can have & ensure you’re meeting your fluid goal. And try to keep on top if the constipation so it doesn’t go on for so long you require more extreme treatments, and you can avoid the daily discomfort & pain when you finally go. Personally I took a stool softener if I hadn’t gone by day three. It was enough to get things moving again for me. It usually continues until you are eating more & a wider variety of foods so when you are close to your weight stabilising. I still have occasional episodes of constipation (had one this week 😉).
  12. I am 39 years old and have been in a relationship with a narcissistic 50 year old who doesn’t work because he chooses to, for 7 years. He does always have dinner ready and the house clean when I get home from work. Our relationship isn’t on the best of terms and when we argue he calls me fat all the time. He feels like he’s right all the time, he puts others down, blames me for everything etc. This year my company switched insurances and now the surgery is covered!!! I’m so excited. But, I have a feeling this relationship will go from bad to worse when i lose the weight. He said he would be supportive but I don’t know. I’m to my wits end almost and thinking of kicking him out of my home that I own. He’s verbally abusive to me and does it in front of my kids, one of which is his. I don’t know if it’s my low self esteem that won’t let me do it or what!! I’m just afraid things will get worse for me after the surgery.

    Fav Tracker Apps

Hello, I also used to use MyFitnessPal but since surgery moved to Baritastic and it has been working well, since I concentrate on the protein and liquid the most. It will take some getting used to once I start tracking other things when in Maintenace, but I love the weight logging feature.

    Denied

I am so disappointed! I was denied! I have Blue Shield of California and I guess one of their requirements is to be one a weight loss medication for at least one year. My primary Dr had at one time tried to find me one that didn’t interact with my antidepressants but couldn’t find one and so he said I can’t take them. The surgeons office said if I get documentation of this they will turn it in with an appeal. Has this ever happened to anyone where an appeal got them approved?

    Any 50yo or older?

I had my sleeve in May 2022 at age 62, so I am 8 mos post-op. Recovery was quick and fairly easy for me! Like others, wish I hadn't waited so long! I've stalled over the holidays and even gained a couple of pounds, but I am back on track now. My weight loss has slowed dramatically and my surgeon says I'll probably only lose another 20 lbs, but I'm good with that. I feel FANTASTIC! I've eliminated one of my BP meds and the other has been cut in half and some days I don't take it if my pressure is low. I do at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise five days per week, alternating stationary bike and rowing machine. I think my hair loss has finally slowed/stopped. My surgeon & internist are very pleased with my progress. I'm sure I could have lost more if I had eaten cleaner the past 8 mos, but I really have just been relying on portion control and eating pretty much what I want, but focusing on healthier options when available and keeping track of my protein intake. Definitely consumed far too many sweets over the holidays. My husband and I are spending a week in a cabin in the woods near Fairbanks, Alaska in a couple of weeks and I'm excited to see how much easier the smaller me will fit in the seat for the long flight!

Stomach discomfort & confusion post op

Yep, completely normal. With VSG, they remove the part of the stomach the produces the hunger hormone, ghrelin. That means not only have you just had major surgery, completely changed your eating habits, have new anatomy, but the signal that used to tell you when you were hungry no longer exists (or is significantly altered - some folks do still experience hunger post-op). I always said in those early days that I was learning my "new plumbing" because it felt like I had a whole new set of pipes! For me, eating on a fairly regular schedule helped. Over time, that schedule has changed and I've adjusted as I've lost weight and healed and all of that. But in those really early days, having a system really, really helped. I knew I would get my water and protein in, I could avoid a drop in blood sugar that gave me the shakes, and it helped me learn my new hunger and full queues more quickly. Give yourself lots of grace, this is all new and you are figuring it out!

My surgery will be 9th February

Welcome & congrats on your upcoming surgery. You picked one of the questions for which there is no definitive answer. Some will say yes & others no because surgeons have different plans & requirements. Best advice is to ask your surgeon or their team & then follow their advice. Same with what foods you can or can’t eat & when, how long each of your staged return to eating phases last, whether you can use a straw or not & so on. Nothing stopping you reducing or stopping your caffeine intake if you want as it can irritate your delicate post surgery healing tummy. May be look to reducing things you consume a lot or crave like carbonated drinks (one you will have to avoid for a while or forever depending on how you react), sweet things, etc. so withdrawals symptoms while on the pre surgery & staged return to eating post surgery diet aren’t quite as severe & hard to manage. To update your profile information using the web based version not the app, click the three line icon in the top right hand corner, select account & then profile. You can update your current weight as you progress by scrolling to almost the bottom of any page to the together we have lost section. All the best.

    Hormones

Estrogen is stored in your fat so as you lose weight that estrogen is released into your blood stream. This estrogen flush can make you more fertile (many surgeons suggest doubling down on contraceptives), longer/shorter/heavier/lighter periods, more or fewer PMS symptoms, acne, headaches, etc. In my case my menopausal symptoms disappeared for a while (came back though ☹️). The surgery & weight loss can also cause other seemingly unusual effects For example, many see their cholesterol &/or bilirubin levels rise, liver function to be off, etc. It can even cause gall stones to develop. These are all temporary effects & will eventually decrease until your weight loss stabilises or slows & they disappear. Of course if the persist or seem extreme, contact your doctor.

    Chronic pain, WLS, and exercise

I didn’t exercise in the traditional sense & I lost all my weight & more. I made my everyday tasks more active. Walked up & down escalators, took stairs not lifts, parked further away from where I was going, took the long way round, made multiple trips up & down my stairs even if I could do it in one trip, etc. Now I do some stretches, use resistance bands, some wall pushups & sit ups. Mainly for my back - have oozing discs. Honestly what I do takes about 20 mins max over a three or four separate sessions. Wouldn’t burn 30 calories. 😆. Exercising accounts for only about 10% of the weight you have to lose. So want to lose 100lbs, exercise will only account for about 10lbs. Of course there are many benefits to exercising. There are lots of low impact, gentle exercises designed for various physical limitations available online which you may be able to do without causing a flare up. Give them a go & see how you go.

    Any 50yo or older?

I'm 61 going on 62 soon. I don't have a lot of sagging. I think it's because I'm loosing very slowly, I go to the gym and do weights for an hour 2-3 times a week and ride my bike. Maybe that has helped me. I'm sure it will come eventually. 😉

    Considering another surgery

The side effect of my medication is weight gain; for example my younger brother at one time took this same medication and gained over 60 pounds in 3 years (prior to that he was always skinny). I have def noticed an increased appetite with it. I have never eaten to feel "full" or uncomfortable since surgery, I have always been good about stopping and eating small portions at a time (half plate of food). However, I think my main issue is feeling hungry again soon after eating and then snacking. The only thing I can think to do is to measure every single thing I eat for a period of time and see if that helps, and to cut out snacking completely. My diet is average at best. I still make sure to get 60-80 grams of protein a day, and enjoy lots of veg and some fruits, however I do not stick to low carb or low fat options all the time--this may be another issue.
