July 22nd here. Seems like time has slowed to a standstill ever since I got my surgery date. Practicing sipping Water, trying different Protein shakes, and OD'ing on Bariatric Pal posts and YouTube videos in the meantime. C.

My first step was to see if my insurance company covered the surgery. If so, the next step would be to see what surgeons are in your area. Investigate each one (or just choose one!) and call their office / Bariatric Center to see when and where the next seminar will be. The seminar, which around here lasts 3 - 4 hours, covers every question you could possibly have about the banding (and even bypass also) with professionals that will tell you what your future would be like. From there, my Bariatric Center took over, scheduling all my pre-op testing (and I had to see a nutritionist six times for my insurance company). Good luck to you, now that you've made your decision...

Having trouble with Calcium Citrate. What do you use?
catwoman7 replied to Thecloude1's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I use Upcal D (a powder you can mix into food), Calcet chews, and Bariatric Advantage chews. I also occasionally drop a couple of calcium citrate tablets into a fruity Protein shake (they don't dissolve as well in the milky shakes) -
First Post. Need Change. So Many Questions.

Congratulations on your decision to take control of your life and health! As a fellow Oregonian, I can tell you that there are several good surgeons/hospitals in the Portland area. Salem Hospital's Bariatric Surgery Center also has a great program and the staff are awesome. This is who I chose. Salem Hospital and their bariatric surgery center are also recognized as national centers of excellence. If you know others who have had WLS, talk to them to get their recommendations. Do your research and attend a few informational seminars (this is pretty much how you have to start the process with any bariatric surgery program). You'll get a feel for which surgeon/program will be the best fit for you. The seminar will also give you a more clear picture of each type of surgery. Depending on your insurance, it can be a lengthy process with many, many hoops to jump through or it can be a very simple and quick process. Expect to go through several pre-op procedures, labs and clinic appointments (surgeon, dietician, psychologist, etc.) either way, though. You came to the right place for support and advice. The members here are wonderful and very helpful. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress! -
What is a good Post Op shake?
dawgfan replied to MsHansy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've tried all kinds and they all gave me serious gastric problems. So far the only one I can drink is All the Whey-for bariatric/lap band. It has no fat, no carbs, sweetened with Stevia, gluten free and lactose free. I love the strawberry shortcake and orange creamsicle!!! Hoping They Dont Postpone My Surgery
D1NOnlySexyLady posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So today after speaking to my NUT she told me that what I was eating as my two week pre op diet was all wrong and that I should be having the Bariatric Advantage meal replacement shakes. But my surgery is on May 1st and there is no way I can have it deliver at a reasonable time. Anyways after reading some of the topics I asked her if I can use Body Fortress and she mention that while it's not her first choice she's not completely against it. So now I'm just worried is there any way that they can stop my surgery because I did'nt do as I was told. I have been waiting so long for this surgery and I wouldn't want for it to be cancel. Hopefully someone can share their experience so I know I'm not alone here. -
I went for my first consultation yesterday, and was very excited to get started on this whole journey. By the time I got home, the sleep study receptionist had left a message to make an appointment for tonight. Psychiatrist is on Monday, Gastroscopy is on Wednesday, Cardiologist is on 3/3 and all I have left to do is find a bariatric nutritionist that United Healthcare will cover. I am so excited to get these things under way, so the paperwork can all be submitted to UHC. If they don't approve me I will probably hit this deep funk...so I'm trying to keep myself anticipating anything from them. The surgeons office has already got the criteria from them, so I hope this is all going to be good. Looking forward to being set free from this bondage of weight. Anyone had experience with UHC in Arizona? How long did it take you to hear anything, did they make you jump through hoops.... My surgeon will be Dr. Chiasson (hopefully......)

Hello Bariatric Op - I actually ended up on a second round of antibiotics but, that time she put me on Florastor to help get the good bacteria built up. It worked, thank goodness! I've been off the antibiotics now for ...hmm...about 3 weeks and everything seems good. My weightloss has slowed down tremediously though. My metabolism is shot and has been for years. I'm hoping it will pick up soon! I just got back from Disney in Florida...walked about 10 miles a day, did my best with protein and didn't eat any junk yet gained weight. UGH!!!! So ticked. Although I can tell I'm retaining fluid it still stinks knowing I passed on all the fatty foods etc while there. OH well....I know this works and gotta kick up my exercise and fluids. Back to work on Monday...back to the grind of meeting all the nutritional things. How are you doing? -

Need Lap Band Buddy / Mentor Iam just starting this process.
Lisa73 replied to Lisa73's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Maplef50, Thanks for the info on sleep study very interesting. I thought about what you said about changing to a different psych. dr. but I had to call the ins co. and get the approval and an auth # myself, and the list of other bariatric psych. dr. on the list are pretty far from where i live but i did call the office and asked them to put me on a list to call if there are any cancellations. Who knows I might get that call. Today I am preparing to go on vacation next week. Me, my husband and 4 year old daughter are going to Branson, MO for a week. 5 hrs in the back of a mini van with a 4 year old. I hope this is going to feel like a vacation. Let me know when you find out your surgery date. Lisa -
so worried that insurance wont approve me for surgery
TWILLED replied to amethyst1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Toni. Like you I am also worried that i will be denied by my insurance company. As of last week I have completed all the required PCP visits, testing and attendance at support groups. Now the waiting begins. My bariatric surgeon seems confident that it will be approved and said if it's not we will appeal. I'm hoping the first time is a go. I need this surgery for so many reasons. Good luck to you. -
Just started the processes to get sleeved
JennyBeth replied to hoghead's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Contact your insurance company and they can tell you right off the bat what their expectations/requirements are. Even though you meet the specifications for bariatric surgery a lot of insurance companies still make you jump through their "hoops" before they approve you. Good luck to you! -
Lap band to RNY conversion, need to hear from others
Boppin' Bubbe posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had lapband 7 years ago. After a year, I had severe GERD and had to have most of the Fluid taken out of the band. After 6 more years of severe GERD and finally a diagnosis of aspiration pneumonias and staph in the lungs, it was recommended by the head of the GI department at a large metropolitan hospital that I have a conversion to RNY bypass. I am still down about 65 pounds from the original 100 I lost with lap band. Insurance approved the surgery in 2 weeks so I guess there's no question that this is the fix! I meet with my surgeon (the same one that did the lap band) next week for pre-op appointment and surgery date. I am scared, elated, preocupied with bypass information. I am reading everything I can get my hands on. I devoured the Big Book of Gastric Bypass and am re-reading it, marking questions and thoughts to talk with the surgeon and the dietician about. Not sure how or why I missed Bariatric Pal before, but I need all the help I can get. I have great family support and a couple of friends/acquaintances who have had bypass surgery so I feel supported. I need to move on from the "deja vu all over again" feeling and know that this is procedure is way different. I would love to hear from anyone else who has had a conversion. -
So I bit the bullet today and told someone I work with about having bariatric surgery. She mentioned to me her doctors have recommended it to her. The next thing out of her mouth really shocked me. She said she knows she can do it by eating get right and exercising. Do people really think that having bariatric surgery is a miracle and you wake up the next day skinny. Don't they realize it us a tool in the journey and you still have to eat better and exercise. Just had to vent... Sent from my SM-G920T using the BariatricPal App

This is one of the things I'm really scared about. I worry that I'm going to have some serious problem but that doctors are going to think the problem is due to my band and ignore me. Then they find out after my death that I was having a heart attack/gall bladder attack/tumor/hang nail well you get the idea. I'm afraid that non-bariatric doctors are going to give me substandard care because I was so weak and such a loser that I had to resort to an implanted device to control myself. I know there are doctors out there who ARE like that. I know, I shouldn't worry so much, but it's pretty hard to not think about it. And I know that I'm not weak or a loser but I also know there are plenty of people who perceive lap band surgery that way - which is why I'm not telling anyone I'm having it done. Feeling my Feelings...and nothing I can do about it.
Miss Mac replied to HumanMerelyBeing's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are many days when we just get tired of being strong. I really feel for those who do not have a supportive environment and have to walk alone through this weight loss experience. A therapist is a wonderful tool to help you get over the lumps of emotion. Bariatric Pal has also be an outstanding emotional resource for me. I know that not only can I come here with medical issues, I can also come here for a shoulder to lean on. Stay with us. There are o many that have gone on before us who can look back and hold out a hand. -

Omg! I'm so glad to hear that not everyone is post surgical angels that become robots after surgery! I think if we do what is right 99% of the time we can be bad on vacation! How do you not eat in new Orleans?! I will go on vacation and make a mess out of myself and come home, repent and get back on track. You made my day! Sent from bariatric pal app -
My bariatric doctor sugests his patients to switch because they will deny surgery...

I'm glad to know that there is an alternative. I was banded in April 2011. I returned for a follow up visit with the doctor and each time I go there is an office FULL of patients. What's the use of having an appointment when 5 other people have the same appt. During my follow up visit I waited over an hour in the exam room before the Dr. got to me. This isn't counting the time I was in the waiting room. I learned after my first visit that he (Dr.) not only does bariatric surgery but other surgeries also. When I went back for my 1st fill, there were people actually standing, the office was so full. I went back last week for my 2nd fill, same thing. My 3:20 appt. was over around 5:30. I felt I might be too tight because of symptoms I was having. I asked to come back. My appt. was at 2:30. At 3:00 the secretary came out and said the Dr. had to perform emergency surgery and wouldn't be back in the office until 4:30. 4:30 would probably be closer to 5:30. She said we could run errands and come back or sit and wait. Plus this means I've got to wait with what's probably a group coming in later. So once again there's a patient load packed to the ceiling. I told them to cancel me and that I would call back since I needed to check my calendar. I left the office bought fast food, fried chicken strips, fries and sweet tea. Ate it all. I guess I'm not too tight after all.

I would ask you bariatric team if you could have an ablation of your uterus. You'll no longer have a period and you will still have your ovaries to continue producing hormones. That is, of course, if you plan on not ever having children. Sent from my SPH-D710VMUB using the BariatricPal App -

Hello! Family knows more than Dr's!
splitswitch posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself to this forum. I just got back from my Seminar, and had a private consultation with UC Davis Bariatrics center. And as I have known all along I qualify for WLS, with the Co-morbidies I've struggled with for years. HBP I'm on 3 medications, I have sleep apnea and GERD. Like all of us I've attempted diet and exercise with moderate success, even spent a year on phentermine (speed as they should call it) felt like a tweaker.. Anyways weight came back more and more. So I agree with the Staff, I'm ready for a permanent change in my ways of eating, and I'm ready to make the sacrifices needed in exchange for a longer time stay on this earth. Problem is I'm all alone. My Wife and I cannot even attempt to approach talking about this with out turning into a screaming match. She refuses to read any literature. She's of the opinion that I'm "being a pussy" and that I am taking the easy way out. My mother who because she copies "medical records" she qualifies herself as a health care professional. Who seems to think living with HBP and sleep apnea is better that this "risky" surgery.. I'll admit that I do not have as much to loose as others. My BMI is 36.. I'm 5'7 and 233 lbs today.. But it climbs every month. I am also "young" according to my family approaching 40, but I am the only one that takes 5 pills a day everyday. My wife and family are of all a healthy weight. It's amazing the people that have the best diet and exercise advice, eat the same as you do, and ride the couch the same time you do and never gain a pound. Sorry for being long winded, I'm just trying to vent here, and maybe get some words of advice from people that have been through this with unsupportive people in your corner. I know I'm doing this for ME. I told my Wife I'd like to be doing this for her too and our Son. But I'm not backing down., I'm all aboard.. Just hope this won't damage my marriage.. -
Comfortable clothing
KittyKat848 replied to janieitstime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wore something loose and comfortable to the hospital and wore the same outfit home. They gave me a bariatric gown and skid socks -- and frankly, it is just a lot easier to wear their stuff. The IV and monitors really would have made clothes from home and a bathrobe more trouble than it's worth. I really needed very little from home.
