PLEASE HELP educate the skeptic in me. Doesn't starving equal eventual weight gain?
Healthy_life2 replied to MaybeMeow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Call your bariatric office. They are better qualified to answer your questions about metabolism Ask if they have an information seminar. It will help you decide on surgery. All I can offer is my experience five years out from sleeve surgery. (maintaining my weight in the 130's) Surgery is nothing like my other diet attempts. (I've done every diet and pill) I needed a long term solution. My weight loss/maintenance diet is very livable. I'm not deprived, My hunger is manageable. It's normal for your surgery restriction to relax after a year. My stomach is NOT back to full size. I still eat within my calorie range, Maintenance diet and calories are different for each of us. It depends on your surgeons/dietitians plan, activity level, metabolism, healthy issues, medications......The list goes on. I maintain my weight between 1200 and 1300. I do have days that are higher. I take vacations and indulge within reason. If I have a slight gain I eat weight loss calories (My weight loss calories are 1100) Take your time and research all of this. Do whats best for you and your health. Jenn -
PLEASE HELP the skeptic in me. Doesn't starving = eventual weight gain??
MaybeMeow replied to MaybeMeow's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I appreciate your response and the link. It says right in this document... “ most post-op bariatric patients need to consume less than 1000 calories a day in order to maintain weight loss.” 1000 calories a day is a starvation diet Not a maintenance diet. This troubles me greatly. How can this be healthy long term? Meaning live to be 90 long term? Thank you for going to bat with me on this. I’m really having trouble with seeing how this is a forever option. -

The restricted calorie intake is only for the first couple of months until your stomach has healed, and you are eventually able to eat a normal diet, just in smaller amounts of food “per sitting”. However just because your stomach is much smaller, you can still pack a hefty number of calories by the end of the day and eventually GAIN weight post-op. You must think of the surgery as a tool and not a “cure all” answer to lifelong weight management. Please review the information in the link below, I am sure the info will help answer many of the “what do I / can I eat” questions, it did for me. https://www.obesityaction.org/community/article-library/the-post-surgery-diet-for-bariatric-patients-what-to-expect/ -
March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!
ChelleFord87 replied to Mello1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I go in for bariatric sleeve Surgery on 3/3 in two days. I have been on all liquid diet for 11 days and counting. I am nervous and excited about this new journey. -
I couldn't agree more. The confusion is terrible! Every surgeon and nutritionist is different. They need to be more organized. This is too life-altering a procedure for everyone to be all over the place. I would also like to add that they are in terrible need of educating hospitals and other medical professionals about bariatrics. There are certain medications and foods we can't have anymore and also no NG tubes (God forbid anyone never needs one of them). You'd be surprised at how many other healthcare professionals are totally unaware of all that. It's crazy.

Had my surgery last Monday and I have regretted it since day one!

I would request the information packet on Endobariatric.com. My coordinator was Brandi Carter (brandi@endobariatric.com). You can use my name as a referral. Brandi sends out a very informative pdf about Dr Alvarez’s entire process. Plus, she has had the sleeve procedure as well, so her advice comes from experience. Do not be skeptical about Endobariatric with regard to them being located in Mexico. It’s a state of the art, first class hospital, with hospital and hotel all in the same building. My friend had his procedure done their and referred me to him. I would have never even considered going to Mexico to have surgery unless my friend hadn’t praised him so highly. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Dr A patients come to him, in Mexico, from all over the world. (Texas, Arkansas, New Jersey, and Wisconsin Folks were in my group). I was sleeve procedure # 16,848. That’s how many sleeves Dr A has performed. He is one of only 11 surgeons in the world with a certification of Master Surgeon in Bariatrics. It’s all done laparoscopically and robotically. I have 5 small 2” incisions, that’s it. Also, no surprises on fees and money. I sent a $1,000 deposit to book my surgery, then I brought a cashiers check for $6995. Done. Everything included. Drs, anthesthesia, recovery, lodging, post op medications, etc. turnkey. The only thing we paid for meals for my wife and the concierge delivered it right to our room. We never had to lift a finger. A clinic in San Antonio quoted me $15-$20k cash pay when they learned my insurance would not cover bariatrics. When I asked why the $5k gap, they couldn’t give me a straight answer. Every single thing that Brandi tells you is 100% accurate. I would at least look at the packet and watch the videos she sends before I made a decision. My reason was strictly cost In the beginning, but the more I learned and researched all the different Bariatric procedures, the more I realized how transparent Dr A is, and knows what he is talking about. -

Great information Clint, thanks or sharing. I am still 6 weeks away from surgery, but I must admit I am beginning to get hints of cold feet again. I attended a local Bariatric support group meeting last Friday and someone in the group who recently had surgery is having similar issues with keeping their liquids down and another is experiencing a very nasty case of GURD. I would be very interested in seeing those videos your doctor gave you. -
you might end up losing more. It's supposedly due to the anesthesia plus the trauma of surgery on the body (and it supposedly can be a side effect of ANY surgery, but I'm guessing it's more commonly seen after bariatric surgery because we're taking in so few calories those first few months). I don't know think anything is too effective at stopping it - although getting your protein in and keeping on top of your vitamins will probably keep it from getting any worse. Luckily, I didn't lose much - or not enough to be noticed by others. Anyway, I never used the shots - so hopefully someone will chime in about those.

can someone please help me understand my husband?
orange_lily replied to thewifehere's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@Xx1jpt5xx alluded to this, but I want to emphasize it. I think it might help you understand your husband if you think about his weight and eating as an addiction, not a failing of willpower. There are studies that show that foods, especially highly palatable ones, trigger the same brain chemicals as illicit drugs. Food scientists know this and engineer food to be more palatable because it keeps you coming back for more. Unlike other addictions (alcohol, drugs, gambling...), you have to have food to survive so abstinence isn't an option. I think compassion and empathy will get you a lot farther with him than trying to convince and coerce. Most of us fighting against obesity already have a ton of shame and feel like failures that we can't just fix it. It sounds like he is aware there is an issue and wants to do something different. That is a positive in this. I am also glad he has a partner like you that clearly loves him and wants the best for him. Maybe look into tips for supporting people with addictions and try to translate those to this situation. It might also help if you and your husband attended an information seminar at a local bariatric center so you have more information on the process and procedures. -
I think it's because normally, those tend to have sugar in them compared to the bariatric vitamins, which are chewable, pills, or liquid. Which is a bummer because I miss gummy melatonin lol

What helped you decide on the sleeve?
momof3_angels replied to 5in5's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
LOL... my bariatric vitamin is way bigger than an M&M! Of course, no way I could have taken it before 4 months post op... but have no trouble with it now (almost 6 months). I take it with 3 very small medications. Immediately post op I could only swallow pills the size of maybe half an M&M. -
Studies are now showing it’s more beneficial to have bariatric surgery at a lower BMI. A BMI of 30 and above is considered obesity and yet for those that need help with insurance coverage it won’t kick in unless it’s 35 with very specific comorbidities or BMI of 40 + I wished I’d been able to tackle my weight earlier on. Doctors were of no help no matter how much I begged for help. Of course I wish it had been an option many years ago. If you can’t do it with diet alone, and as long as you understand that this is a tool to permanently change your way of eating and create healthier habits for your life - then I say go for it. It’s better than struggling to go it alone. I know for me, I could not have gotten this far without it.

I was approved for surgery. Good vitamins and protein shakes?
AlwaysCruising replied to RachaelEM's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Great info! I have an a lot of people that felt that their taste changed after bariatric surgery. I know one who really could not stand the taste of water enhancers afterwards. Of course people have such a variety of preferences, but it is nice to get some consensus (saves time and money!). -
if you're OK taking tablets, there's always generic brands of calcium citrate. Walgreens and CVS both have them - other places probably do as well. I do the Bariatric Advantage chews occasionally - but I also take tablets. I get the mini-tabs at CVS since the big ones are....big. another option is Upcal-D. It's a powder that I occasionally mix with yogurt (supposedly you can mix it with beverages, too, but it doesn't dissolve that well, so I quit doing it that way)

can someone just tell me
Dawn Hanaphy replied to ninalinas's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry I really thought you meant Coca Cola, If you are thinking real Coke, that long term bariatric surgery wont work. Drugs and maintaining health rarely work. Good Luck. -
I did a lot of searching to find a calcium citrate supplement and couldn't find one at a better price than Bariatric Advantage. If you order it on a auto delivery plan it's a bit less. There are a lot of supplements out there that are cheaper, but they are usually calcium carbonate which is not absorbed as well as the citrate.

Suggestions on the calcium brand? The bariatric advantage brand is TOO HIGH

New bee .... I am afraid it will not work for me
catwoman7 replied to themonk4u's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
at a BMI of 46, you are definitely "fat enough" (your words - not mine!) for it (if it makes you feel any better, my starting BMI was 60). I think a lot of people get their perceptions of bariatric surgery from shows like "My 600 lb Life". I've been working with pre-op groups for the last three years, and I've never seen ANYONE the size of the people on that show. In fact, I would guess most are in the mid-200s, with a handful of 300+ people thrown in for good measure. (I was one of the latter. I thought I'd be one of the smallest people in the room. Nope! I was the biggest!) chasing that "full feeling" is psychological, not physical, so it won't be "fixed" by surgery. A lot of us can probably relate to that - but you're still going to have to deal with it. I have to fight that all the time and constantly ask myself if I'm truly hungry, or if it's just thinking I have to feel "full" again. That said, most of us do lose our hunger for a few months after surgery. For the first time in my life, I didn't give a flying flip about food. Wow - does that ever make it easier to stick to your plan and lose weight! But unfortunately, that doesn't last forever. Hunger usually returns within a few months - or up to a year (mine came back at five months). Then the real challenge begins... as for losing weight - yes, you will lose it if you stick to your clinic's plan. And no, you won't gain it all back as long as you stick to your clinic's plan. It's pretty common for people to gain 10-20 lbs after hitting bottom, but as long as you stay on your plan, you should be able to maintain at that level. It's a battle, but it's not impossible. Lots of us have done it.. I think you'll be glad you had this done. Most of us have no regrets at all and would do it again in a heartbeat. -
Starting weight: 266lbs / 19st / 120kg Current weight: 156lbs / 11st 2lbs / 70kg Goal weight: 140lbs / 9st / 63.5kg Surgery date: 9th June 2019 Surgery: Gastric Bypass What do I eat in a day? @themonk4u all I can say is I feel what you are saying and my heart grieves for the way to feel about yourself,,, you are such a beautiful person I can tell. And this surgery will make the outside match your inside if you don't feel that way now. You have no choice BUT to lose after the surgery . the challenge will be to follow the instructions to the letter, renew your mind with new ideas about food and getting "full" etc.. you gonna do great -
Where did you have surgery?
Zoomzoom replied to sekesterson21's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had mine in Las Vegas (sleeve) at Blossom Bariatric. Excellent experience; I qualified for their fast track program - from arrival through surgery in 5 days. Advertised cost $6799, mine was a little less than that because of a promotion they were running. Includes hotel, transportation once you get there, surgery, etc. Really good experience. March 2020 Surgery Folks Come On in!
Amy Franks replied to Mello1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My program only requires "soft foods" two days before, and clear liquids the day before, but I have been doing 2 protein shakes a day and one meal on my own. I have my pre-op appointment on Monday! It's crazy how fast it is all going now. I have figured out my vitamin regimen (2 Bariatric Advantage Chewable Advanved Multi EA and 3 Bariatric Adv Calcium Chews), and finally found a plant based protein I don't hate (purely inspired Organic Protein). I am intolerant to whey, so the majority of the regular ones are out for me. And there are soooooo many disgusting plant based ones. I have also checked in with all of my favorite coaches with at my gym to make sure they are cool with me not following the daily format so I am good to go there too! I don't want to lose my gym habits. It's too easy to fall back into not going, lol. I am an OrangeTheory addict.
