I would like to add my two cents as well. I am new to the postings but am also nervous as my surgery is scheduled for this coming Tues..I have 5 friends that have had it, and out of them all are doing very well. One of them had to have it removed as her body rejected it but now she is finishing her weight loss journey through ww. I am excitedly nervous and just want to get on with it!

I have lost a least a third of my hair...other people dont notice, but it really bothers me. However, it has slowed down dramatically now. Stress from surgery and smaller amounts of protein are the culprits. Everyone says it is only temporary.

Hair loss???????
Mommy.ArmyWife replied to cranberry31's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Get all the protein you can get! Protein will keep your hair loss in check! -
Biotin comes in different sized capsules...the ones I got are small. I haven't had a problem with them, and I just had a fill Tuesday. I'm not sure if it will help or not, but I figured it was worth a try. It might actually be better to help my hair grow back instead of helping to stop it. But, at least I feel like I'm doing something to help it.

Hair loss???????
Long2BFree replied to cranberry31's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The body goes through a lot of stress from surgery and lower calories which causes the hair loss. -
:scared2: I have read some posts from people complaining of hair loss after lapband surgery, why is hair loss possible? i thought that only happened with the RNY, any info would be appreciated.

I simply called my insuarance company (BCBS of Alabama) and asked if the lap band was covered under my policy and the response I got was no. I didn't ask why or anything else as my heart dropped into my stomach and I didn't know what else to say but "ok". Could she have taken the question in terms of it being an elective thing? In other words, if my Dr. submitted it them stating health reasons, might I then be approved? I have not spoken to my Dr. about this surgery yet, I figured checking with the insurance company first was the best way to start, but maybe not. I did read on the banstersinsurance yahoo group in the database that BCBS of Alabama covered this surgery 100%.. was this just one persons experience? I am not sure what that list is really saying. I know that when I was considering gastric bypass last year I read in the Insurance coverage that 1 weight loss surgery would be covered and do not recall reading any exceptions to that. I will need to go back and dig that book out again. Do you think I would have a better chance get apporved through my Dr? Or is no basically NO and I would have to go through an appeal? Medically I think I am a candidate for this surgery. My BMI is 51, high blood pressure, father had heart attack at 50, his father died of heart attack at 60, 2 uncles on my moms side have had heart attacks and her parents have both had numerious heart bypasses. My mom, grandmother and uncle also have diabetes. Any insight on this would be great. Thanks ETA: I see in my policy under exclusions that it does not cover services for obesity. BUT in the same paragraph is goes on to say, "This exclusion does not apply to surgery for morbid obesity if medically necessary and in compliance with guidelines of the Claims Administrator." So maybe I answered my own question. I am just not sure who/what the Claims Administrator is and what the guidelines are.

yes, my gf started WW and also is losing very well--BUT, i know that when she loses "patience"-she will gain again. i will lose patience--but the BAND will remind me that i really CAN'T eat like i did before. i definitely feel restriction now. i am NOT pushing food down myself at the same rate. it will be a slow loss--but i will lose. i managed to somehow lose 3 lbs (according to dr's scale) since last visit--and i really didn't try.

DOES anyone know about ins approval if you lose weight before authorization. I m aware of the 2 week pre op diet but if you can lose weight 6 mos before surgery ,why do you need surgery? -
Weight loss before insurance approval
TQUAD64 replied to poppa al's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost a couple of pound during the 6-month supervised diet. I was told by my insurance case manager not to go below a 40 BMI during the 6-month supervised diet, because I would not get approved. I was around a 41/42 BMI at the time. Once the insurance company approved me for the surgery. I loss 10 pounds on the pre-op diet. I have Blue Shield of California. -
Hello, everyone. My name is Diane, I am a relative newbie to this site, just found it the end of January and been reading your posts ever since. I guess you could consider me a senior sleever as I am 56 years old or maybe I should say 56 years young. LOLS! I was the chubbiest baby of all my siblings and remained very chubby most of my childhood. Even though I was very active in sports, and I loved swimming I was just always a very chubby child. I have lost significant amounts of weight many, many times thoughout my life but just manage to put it back on plus more to boot. But the weight has finally gotten the better of me I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis which causes my feet, knees and joints to hurt to the point where I walk like a very old person. So I decided enough is enough and I am gonna give hit the weight loss circuit one last time. Only this time I am going to make sure I can keep it off for good!! I reserched about the lapband but have decided on the gastric sleeve because I believe this is the one for me. I have completed the 6 month scheduled Dr. visits and jumped all the necessary hoops required to get this surgery done. Hooray!! My surgery is scheduled for Feb. 14th by Dr. Kemmerling, at BayCare Hospital in Green Bay , WI. My pre-op appt. was Jan. 24th, had bloodwork, chest xrays, and EKG, if everything turns out okay with that I am good to go, I am just okay at this computer stuff so I don't know how to get the ticker thingy, tried but didn't work - so I will just list my pre-op weight as 228# and I am 5' 6 1/2" tall. If anyone is a senior sleever I would be interested to hear your progress and find out if you are happy with your results. Maybe we can chat about our progress on this new journery in our lives. I will try to keep you posted as often as I can. Thanks all! Hope to be chatting with you all again soon.

I've had the info seminar and I'm meeting with the surgeon next Wednesday. Not sure what procedure I'll have, but leaning toward the sleeve. I have a friend who got the lap band 10 years ago and she has put it all back on. Another friend got the sleeve 2 years ago and is really struggling. She's gained back 35 and in crisis. My main worry is not the surgery, but regaining weight down the road, like happened with all my other big weight losses. Any advice from the long-term folks? This is the one aspect that terrifies me. Thanks!

I was banded on Dec. 3rd. I had my first weigh in this morning and I have lost 30 pounds. My last weigh was November 17th at my pre-op appointment. I am so excited, I have lost a total of 50 pounds since August when I started my 3 month clinical weight loss required by the insurance company.

Should I or shouldn't I
roziecakes replied to Squishymummy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
In my case, I started losing weight without the aid of the band first; and I'm like you, I love to exercise, but if I stop for whatever reason the weight piles back on. I have had a hard time exercising as much as I would like due to a very bad back. After losing a fairly good amount of weight, but not enough to really make a difference to my back, I thought long and hard about what solutions there were for me; and I knew that the weight loss had to happen faster to prevent back surgery. I will definitely take a lap band over back surgery any ol' day. So what I would say to you is, really think about the goals that you have, and take a good inventory of your current habits, and see how much you can do before you consider surgery. I didn't decide to get surgery until I had exhausted all other options, and for me, I believe this surgery was exactly the perfect thing for me, because at this point I'm fairly disciplined. It's true what everyone says about this being hard work. It is, and it's only day 3 for me! Amazing. Bottom line is, it's all about a true lifestyle change, whether we find that through surgery or not; that's what will help you ultimately, is being able to stop doing the things that aren't working for you, and finding the most efficient and best way for you personally to find health. best of luck to you! -
No More Starbucks??!?!?
NewStart95987 replied to SGP78's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Starbucks is yummy BUT like someone mentioned, carbs are hiding. And if you notice on labels for almost anything low fat, low sugar or no sugar doesn't always mean it's truly low or no and it fact it usually means there is a lot more fat in another category. A little trick I learned from a fellow bandster was playing with my protein. For example, my chocolate protein mix, I would add some instant coffee crystals and let them absorb. When cold (I never did blend but would love to have) it tastes just like a mocha. Not exactly Starbucks but play around with it. You would be amazed at how crafty and creative you can get :-) Don't deprive yourself BUT be careful and don't work hard on a pre-op diet to find out that you have been slowing down your weight loss due to lurking carbs. I found this out the hard way. -
Coopersmama, congrats on the weight loss. Don't worry you will get the house. Red tape is one of those things we have to go through practically everyday. You will get through this.. By the way I love ya dog and you look great.. i Can't wait until my surgery date.. Anyway keep the faith sistah as I will be praying for ya all the way from Las Vegas, NV....

Concerns about approval
Manda87 replied to nancy_marie_00's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I thought I was going to get denied because of my age. I'm 22, and I thought they would think that I should at least "try" to lose weight. (I had recorded weight loss attempts since I wa 12). My BMI was like 52 and I did have some hypertension, but I wasn't on medicine for it. However, I was approved with no issues. I think you will do fine. Just give you insurance a call. If your surgeon's office is as wonderful as mine, (I have a wonderful insurance lady that does all the dirty stuff for the insurance) they will help you with your insurance battles. -
July 2010 Bandsters... Where are you guys??? LOL
dlynn1635 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My name is Demetra and I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. I was banded on July 14, 2010 and have lost 86 lbs so far... I still have another 25 to go according to my doc. Weight loss is at a stand still right now. No weight loss prior to surgery so my starting weight was 273 and am currently at 187 give or take a few pounds day to day. Was wearing a 20/22 to start and am down to about a 10/12... Very happy with my progress. So I would love to hear from others that had surgery around that time! -
Thanks! Congrats on the weight loss that is awesome! I hope I can lose that much!

Wow I had surgery on the same day and I've only lost 7 congrats on your weight loss

Weight loss immediately following surgery?
Big_Mama replied to brandytanny's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Good for you! The first two weeks you tend to drop a lot of water weight. Depending on your weight, they say the first 10-20 lbs is water weight. It's normal. Then it slows down to about 1-5 lbs per week. Make sure you get that protein in though, and plenty of liquids. You don't want to end up dehydrated and with your hair falling out. I, for one, was getting maybe 20 oz of water in a day (counting 2 protein shakes made with water) and started getting very dizzy and strong migraines...I was getting dehydrated really bad. I upped my water intake using lemon ice tea crystal light, because water tasted gross to me after surgery, and I began to feel better within a day. -
Lapband revised to bypass but scared!
band2bypass15 replied to Coco6983's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I've had many surgeries...c-section, nephrectomy, gallbladder removal, lapband. When my band slipped I lost all hope and gained all my weight back. I had RNY less than two months ago and I'm already down 50 lbs!!! The doctor took out the lapband at the same time. I only stayed in the hospital 2 days and have had no complications. I was scared to death, but this has been the best weight loss decision i've ever made. In my opinion RNY is the way to go. -
Every one loses at their own rate. There is no right or wrong amount of weight to lose each week. Yes, there may be average amounts of loss people who are similar height, weight, age, gender, etc. may have in common. As long as you see the trend of your weight loss going down you’re succeeding. The amount you lose each week will also slow as you progress. It is possible you are experiencing a stall as has been suggested. These are extremely common. We talk about the three week stall but that first one can happen at week 2, 3, 4, 5 …. It’s just your body taking a breath & trying to catch up with the changes (surgery, weight loss, reduced calories, dietary changes,…). You will likely have other stalls as you’re losing. We’ve all been on that gain, lose, gain roller coaster. Personally I know the reason I always regained after losing was because the diets I was on weren’t sustainable or I just went back to the same old way of eating. I’d start regaining a couple of weeks after the diet ended. The difference this time is that I work at sticking to the changes I made to how I eat, what I eat, why I eat every day. I have many years ahead of me but I’m going to work my butt off to try to stay my course cause that desire to go down my old path is always there. I just understand it & manage it better now. Your success starts & ends in your head. It’s not just what you put in your mouth. You have to do the head work. Many do this with the help of a therapist, others do it themselves. There are lots of people here who are happy to share experiences & offer support. Follow your plan, meet your protein goals, get your fluids in, be more active and your weight loss will continue. You’ll get there.

Hello, I am three weeks out and I have lost 24 pounds. Am I on par with everyone else? It seemed like I was loosing 2 lbs a day but now I am down to two every other day. I've also been able to eat a little more than I could up until now. I'm afraid I am pushing my stomach to the limits trying to get get Protein and fluids and I'm afraid I'm stretching my stomach back out. Am I just paranoid?
