    Plateaued at 11 months post-op 😔

    As we get closer to a normal BMI weight loss does slow down. For me it slower about 20, but Now I am 9 pounds from “normal” and I am stuck!! I don’t do a lot of exercise either other than walking. It is possible it’s just a long stall but if it doesn’t break soon you will have to explore the possibility that you have put yourself into maintenance. At that point you will have to log and see exactly how many calories you are currently eating and consider cutting them by a bit to start the loss again. You say you eat three small meals and don’t snack much but you would be surprised how much the calories can vary based on that. Maybe before cutting calories speak to your dietician because of the low BP and blood sugar (I am not experienced with those).

    I agree it’s probably just a typical stall. Your lucky because most have them around three weeks out. Im sure the anemia is depleting your energy as you said. Hopefully adding a supplement will fix that fairly quick. Just keep sticking to your clinics plan and your loss will start again.

    I was sleeved 12/14/21 and I have lost 50 lbs. I’m starting to experience hair loss , I’m noticing In The shower I’m loosing more hair I’ve been using a very good shampoo since 3 months pre op . I’m hoping it’s a very minimal that I loose. I don’t color or chemically treat my hair also . My hair is very natural. So I’m hopeful this isn’t to bad.
  4. Hi, everyone! I’m 11 months post-op from VSG and I have a bit of a dilemma. I have not been losing any weight as of about 6 weeks ago. I’m 38, 5’5”, and currently yo-yoing between 177 and 178 during every weekly weigh-in. I still want to lose about 30 more pounds to put me in a healthy weight class. Nothing has changed with my eating habits - I still eat very small portions, mostly solid protein, and do not snack much during the day. Since the surgery, I have had some issues with orthostatic hypotension (dizziness from low blood pressure) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so I would be very surprised if my diet needed any adjustment right now. I should mention that I am coming off of ten years of disability for early onset degenerative disc disease, so other than twice-weekly physical therapy, exercise has been completely foreign for me, hence the excessive weight gain. I’ve had four neck surgeries and countless back injections and procedures. At my heaviest, I couldn’t stand for more than 10 minutes without excruciating pain in my lower back. However, in the last month, I’ve been feeling well enough to start seeing a personal trainer once a week and easing into a light workout routine (dynamic stretching, light free weights, strength training, etc.). I’m also walking more frequently and for longer distances. My question is this: could the lack of weight loss be due to rebuilding muscle from my new exercise regimen? Or should I try to adjust my food intake again and see what happens? I have my one year checkup with my gastric surgery team coming up next month and I plan to talk to them about this issue, but I wanted to seek out any advice on here, too. Thanks so much in advance!!

    I'm doing fantastic. One has to remember, it's a lifestyle change. This isn't a switch you can just turn on or off. Your stomach will reject certain sugars, and mine rejected peanut oil (Chinese food). Once you dump a few times, you'll know what you can and cannot tolerate. My initial weight loss was 197lbs, but I gained 40lbs back over the 15 years since. I don't like the weight gain, so I went back to the foods I ate when I first had the surgery, and I am staring to get back down.

    4 weeks post op and vomiting?

    Yes I have the surgeon and the dr at the weight loss center to contact. I feel ok (slight tummy ache) other than that episode so I’m going to definitely call both in the morning. I just didn’t think (hoping) it didn’t warrant calling the on call dr. . I’ve been trying scrambled eggs for about a week and was doing ok but I agree I’m going to probably back off that for a while. I’m supposed to start soft foods this week but I don’t feel confident in doing that after today. Thank you both!

    They’re very common & you’ll likely have a couple of them while you’re losing. Think of them as your body needing a break because of all the changes - diet, weight loss, etc. just stick to your plan & you should be fine. If it persist fir longer than a month, give your dietician a call. You may a tweak to your plan or activity. The anaemia is the likely cause of the tiredness but periods of low energy aren’t uncommon either. I remember one day I thought I was going to fall off my treadmill I was so tired. I added an electrolyte drink to my fluid rotation. (I drank diluted hydralyte.) The little boost of energy was a blessing. But if your body says I’m tired, have a break. Even stopping for a cup of tea while out doing chores would be enough for me to then finish doing everything I needed to get done.

  10. Yes! I tore my meniscus years ago and had horrible knee pain. Tuesday will be one year since my weight loss surgery. I’m down to my goal weight and NO knee pain. It’s amazing! Now I love to walk again. It’s helpful not having an extra 100 pounds weighing me down.

    as long as you're sticking to your clinic's plan, it's just a stall. Most of us have our first major stall within the first 3-6 weeks after surgery - yours is a little later than that, but I'm sure that's what's going on. You'll likely hit several of these throughout your journey. It's annoying, but it's all part of weight loss (at least for many of us) when you hit these, just stay off your scale (maybe just weighing once a week) and make sure you're following your plan to a "T". They usually last about 1-3 weeks before breaking - and then you'll be on your way again.

    Thats great! I hope youve been able to work on eating behaviors with the. You could consider how important this is to you. Really visualize how weight loss surgery will help your life. Find a big reason and keep it in the forefront of your mind. It's not easy and takes will power but having a "because" can really push you along. It's not inherently bad that you've eaten certain foods but really you only know if you're being reckless through food. If the food is triggering for you and keeps you from sticking to a plan, it could be reckless. It's good you find better alternative food items but also think of alternatives that aren't related to food. My therapist always said put distance between you and food. I know your appointment isn't right away but it's coming up! Keep thinking about why you're doing this and put the work in to eat and live in a way that makes you a good candidate for bariatric surgery. The work is up to you at the end of the day. If you make a mistake get back on the horse. You have the rest of your life to enjoy all kinds of food in moderation. The time before your surgery and while you're healing after is a time to take a step back and relearn everything about nutrition and eating down to the core.     Have you tried counseling? I'm a big fan of it. It's got me through the journey and my bad eating patterns. I'm over a month post op and having that counseling allows you to see why you do something and what to do instead. My urges to overeat were greatly reduced pre op and now that I'm post op, I have no urges to overeat. I've been with my psychologist for 10 months now. She's the best! I still eat food I like (that I can tolerate and is part of my plan) and I don't believe in moralizing food. It's people's bad behavior around food that's an issue, not the food. Moderation is key and learning to eat more protein over carbs is a good idea pre op. An easy way to do that is having a daily protein and calorie goal so you can get the right food in and not overdo it. Don't beat yourself up for eating things that aren't right for you in the moment either. Part of successful weight loss is believing in yourself and not giving up or beating yourself down so much because of a mistake. I still have my moody days trust me but any good dietician will tell you progress, not perfection. Especially if eating is emotional for you. Just make sure you're honest with your team and set clear goals and boundaries with food and weight. They're there to help you. Build a treatment team if you feel like you don't have control over what you're eating. And im sure lots other who comment on this thread will have good advice! Welcome to the community.     Dreaded hair loss - question

    I am 11 months post surgery, and I haven't had any hair loss. I take my supplements, but for some reason my protein has not been absorbed as it should. As a 53 yo woman, my doctor still has me on 110g of protein a day. This could be why I haven't lost any hair. On the flip side, I have really dry patches on my scalp that itches terribly. My doctor prescribed me a steroidal shampoo that helps, but hasn't cleared it up after two months of regular use. Has anyone else experienced this?
  15. Hello this is my first post. I wanted to try to get a better understanding as to what is possibly going on. I had my gastric sleeve surgery on the 24th Jan of this year the first 5 weeks i lost a lot of weight fast, 20kg. Now i'm at a stand still the past 2 weeks i'm bobbing up and down 1/2 kg. i'm now down to 146 kg. I have no access to a dietitian until 16th May so i can't ask whats going on. I was at my local GP on Friday to get a blood test ordered as i have anemia on and off since surgery i felt like rubbish no energy, tired all the time and it's an effort to get out the front door. I'm suppose to be making all these fantastic changes exercising and honestly i just don't have the energy for it i do try to get out every day for a walk thats a force. I'd apprechiate any insight, thoughts or ideas all are welcome.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

    Hi Everyone, So....it's been 7 months for us. I've lost 20 pounds. I was very depressed for a while because I wholeheartedly expected to lose more and more quickly. As long as I keep losing, it will be ok. Maybe it's good that's its been so slow. IDK So, get this, the new dr put me on Adipex. I told her that I had taken Adipex for my entire adult life (I'm 56). But she prescribed it anyway. She told me to eat every 3 to 4 hours. And she told me that I wasn't getting enough protein. I know that's true. Most days I don't even get half of what I'm supposed to have. I know this, I've had enough protein shakes and eggs to last a lifetime. Why aren't there scientists out there figuring out a way to make a protein patch or a capsule. LOL I did get some JRobb protein powder to add to soups and yogurts. I haven't tried it yet. I'm wearing clothes I haven't worn in a long time --and that's nice. I still have 16 pounds to go to reach my goal. The surgeon made it sound like I would lose all I would lose in year one. In other words, he doesn't see patients losing in year two very often. This leaves me 5 months to try to lose the 16. I'd like to know if any of you guys heard the same thing. Can I really expect NOT to lose after a year? Or possibly even gain back? On an unrelated note -- I've been reading about alcohol. I'm trying to cut back on that too, hoping maybe that will help with the weight loss. I've lost some hair. The new dr is super nice and she explained why we lose hair --that's why I've got to figure out a way to get the proteins in. I'm very happy for all of you who have lost really big amounts of weight. That's got to be life-changing. Congratulations. Baby sister had gastric bypass in Tijuana in October and has lost nearly 80 pounds.
  17. Hello all! I'm in the pureed phase for ten more days, and I'm curious about what everyone else is eating. I've tried the ricotta bake, and I wasn't a huge fan. I made cauliflower soup which I love but can't eat anymore this week. Ha. I've mostly just been eating yogurt, thinned-out refried beans, smoothies, and jello. I don't know if my taste buds have changed, but nothing tastes very appealing anymore. I am not eating much, but I know I'm still on track with weight loss because I'm down 16 lbs.

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

    Good idea about the appointments. I will schedule a hair cut soon. I’m scheduled for VSG 4/19, 2 week liquid diet prior. I purchased all my vitamins, abdominal binder, broth, jello, protein shakes, etc.. I bought silicone popsicle molds from Amazon and I plan on making my own sugar free ices. I am taking the surgery week off from work and working from home the 2nd week.

    I'm one day before you April 6 and was just given my surgery time. 3 days liquid diet for me with eight days of 1000 calories. I've ordered my vitamins. Bought broths, jello and such already. Trying to get myself mentally and physically prepared. I'm also having the gastric sleeve. I've taken my before measurements and pictures too.   21. Thank you for the quick responses! I've been wearing orthotics since I was young, so I don't expect that to ever go away, but my feet definitely got worse over the years with more weight gain, especially in the last 3 years it became so painful to walk for longer than 20 minutes without massive aching in my arches and feet, and of course the fun bonuses that go with it like shin splints, tight tendons, and knee pain! I'm just hoping some of those symtpoms go away with the weight loss. I've got some good ASICS now that have taken me a long time to 'break in', my feet still get sore no matter what I wear after a certain period, but at least I know that it should improve a bit and that I'm wearing good shoes and have proper orthotics. I'll see how I go later down the track when I've lost some weight!
  22. I’m actually going through this hair loss cycle for the third time in a year and a half. It basically happens anytime your body experiences a traumatic/ hormonal change and in the last 18 months I had a baby, got Covid and then had the sleeve done. Each brought on the hair loss so as an “expert” I’ll tell you that though it’s distressing, for most people it slows and then stops. When you start noticing fuzzies around your hairline you know you’re on the rebound. Good luck!
  23. I personally just went through the hair loss part of my journey. Mind you I had very thick long hair, I got worried as it came out in huge handful wads at times. I felt like a shedding animal but I can tell you it ends an then it’s growing back already. My hairdresser noticed it was thinner but nobody else has noticed at all. I was worried an watched a few videos an read a lot but in the end I just didn’t distress my hair any further than it was. I did not color it during that time an I didn’t put it up as that seemed to weigh on it an I had worse shedding after a pony or bun. That is just my experience an as I said it’s growing back already
  24. As Catwoman7 said it depends upon how much weight you have to lose. Other factors can influence the loss as well. Some are your own choices & actions & others are physiological factors & how your body reacts to the surgery & the changes to diet & activity. I reached my goal at 6 months but continued to lose for another 11 months (at a much slower rate of course) because I was finding it challenging to eat enough to stop the loss. My metabolism was still running pretty fast then too (wish it still ran that fast) & your metabolic set point will influence when your weight loss stops. Because as time passes we are able to eat larger portions (equal to recommended serving sizes) so too your calories increase & the weight loss stops. Also just general lifestyle choices. Some people are happy for their loss to stop at a higher weight than they first thought they’d reach simply because they didn’t want to continue to make food choices that restricted or limited their lifestyle.

    Dreaded hair loss - question

    I was taking biotin religiously months before surgery, and post surgery met all protein and vitamin goals plus collagen support supplements. I couldn't have done more to prepare, but from 4 months, my hair has thinned and while it's slowed down now at 6 months, I joke that I have to style my hair into a comb-over. I had fine hair normally, so losing volume has really thinned it out. It sucks. It really does. I'm not quite at the "wear a hat" or scarf stage, but I'm not far off. Just got to ride it out and focus on the good. My brother says I look ten years younger, so even with crappy hair, that's a plus!
