    Bypass countdown

Thanks for the advice! I actually really found all the details helpful. I’m a very detail oriented person and love to make plans and see them in progress. I have the journals and your advice just helped reinforce what I was planning on doing. I’ve been successful in life, I’ve always met my goals and the one thing that has held me back is over eating. I’ve had 10 months to get prepared for this and I’ve noticed a big shift in my brain on what I’m expecting out of this. Being positive, happy, accountable for why I’m here and realistic is what I’m working on. Ready for all the changes and not a temporary get skinny fix this time around. Feeling as prepared as I can :)

    Regained weight support

Thanks Ms. sss - it certainly is a tough call. I paid $16,000 in 2009 for the lap band that is now being taken out. MGB will be an additional $19,000. Believe me, I am all for investing in myself but its a hard pill to swallow if it is only for another 5-10 years. The trend seems to be after a certain amount of time, people are following low cal, exercise, feel like they are starving themselves and nothing is happening. Weirdly enough, weight gain is my least worry. Sure, it will frustrate me, but any medical complications scare the bejesus out of me! I'm hearing ulcers and yet more revisions? I'm 50 now; I don't really want to be having surgeries in my 60's and 70's when the risks become greater. My surgeon/clinic provides support etc for 5 years. I think that says a lot as well. Its not lifetime. One side of me says, just do it - you have read enough to know it will help you stay on a healthy lifestyle. And the other says, get a personal trainer and have him/her weigh you in 3 days/week to be accountable. I don't have to make the decision today. I am grateful for site's like these that can assist in decision making. Back in 2009 there wasnt much support for the lap band.

    Regained weight support

Alot of us on here got the surgery costs covered by insurance, so yeah, having to shell out $19K adds ALOT to think about. Its easy to say now that I am 2 years post op that I would totally do it again, even if I had to pay, but really, if I think about it, I’m not 100% sure I would have gone through with it knowing nothing of my outcome back then if I had to shell out that much cash. With that said: I started gaining weight about 15 years ago, and spent maybe the last 10 of those years morbidly obese. Yes, I had done diet and exercise several times...on THREE separate occasions I even lost 50+ lbs. The longest I kept those 50+ lost lbs off my body was probably 2 months max...until it started to slowly pile back on to return in its entirety plus some within 4-5 months. There was no mystery to this: I went back to eating the way I did pre-diet and stopped exercising. Now, with WLS, I have been able to keep the 120lbs I lost off of me for SEVENTEEN MONTHS so far. Again, there is no mystery to this: I eat much less and I exercise every day. Yes, I am doing this myself, but the WLS gives me a HUGE boost (at least with the eating part...I actually have no idea why I stay active all this time, and actually like it, GASP!) I have no illusions that I am immune to weight gain. Just because I had WLS does not mean I can’t eat cookies for every meal and sit on the couch all day (but it will limit me to the number of cookies I eat at a time). I have to keep doing what Im doing to maintain where Im at. So far, so good, but we’ll see I guess. In the meantime, I am grateful and satisfied with it all. Soooooo....this is my long winded response that I do agree with you that your immediate and long term success is primarily up to you, but the WLS gives you that extra “umph” to help u get there (and stay there). Good luck with whatever you decide!

    Regained weight support

Hi Everyone, I am a 10 year lap bander that is now getting it removed for various reasons. I am trying to decide if I get a revision to mini gastric bypass or just leave it alone. I too have gained - not all, but I have. I want to lose 50 pounds in total. So deciding if I just do it myself by healthy diet and exercise or go to the next level of surgery. What I am reading here is with the surgery, you have to do it yourself anyway - healthy diet and exercise. And that is a problem for most. We did not have surgery because we found it easy to eat healthy, small meals and exercise. Its an addiction to food for a reason - comfort food. It makes us feel good. Until it doesn't. Its a love/hate relationship. if we all had great motivation we would not be overweight and need surgery to lose weight. Its not that simple. It's psychological. What these clinics are not providing is mental support. We all know what to eat. So why are we all still challenged? Our patterns are inherent in us. Once we get over that food = everything will be better, we will be better. Just like any other addiction. I'm not sold on this surgery.

    Regained weight support

I'm getting nervous, I had my surgrey in Sept 2019 lost 88 pounds, stalled and now I gained 5 pounds. I am so scared I'm going to gain the weight back. I've been trying really hard to stick with healthy eating, drinking a lot of broth to stay full. Any tips for me please.

    complications

I had my RNY on 07/01/2020. Everything was going well until the first of September when I started having issues keeping food down. My doctor did a endoscopy on 09/14/2020 and found that the opening from my stomach to my intestines had closed up. I ended up in the hospital for 10 days and they redid my surgery on 09/21/2020. I went in yesterday 10/19/2020 for another endoscopy and they found that the opening went from 30mm down to 3mm and they had to use a balloon type thing to try to reopen the hole. I have to go back this Friday 10/23/2020 for another endoscopy so they can try an open the hole even bigger. Has anyone ever had this type of complication?

  8. Hello all! I’m scheduled to have gastric bypass surgery in 2 days 10/22/2020. I had my pre-op appointment yesterday and completed all my labs. Since the beginning of this process I wanted the sleeve but my surgeon feels like I will have greater results and long term results with the bypass. I’m 30, 5’8 and weigh 307. Highest weight 323. I have been going back and forth in my head about just going through with the bypass, but I have not came to peace about the decision as of yet. Has anyone experienced this before? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Keeping some muscle after Gastric Sleeve

    july 10th 2019. A little over 15 months ago.
  10. Overall using Blossom was a great experience. They really took care of you. Having drivers pick you up for all apts took the stress out of allot of the process. Everything was discussed with you (also watch their videos) and there were no surprises. Surgery day is the worst. Walking that day really helps. Also, take the medication they give you if you need it. They give you a bag with all of the items you will need for after the surgery. My biggest worry was my five hour flight home and then a 2 hour car ride. For me, I had no big issues. I just took my time. Each day you feel a little better. I choose Blossom because I would not qualify for bariatric surgery thru my insurance. My BMI was 35. I am 10 weeks post op now and down a total of 40 lbs since I started my pre-op diet. It is crazy to think I have lost that much weight and I am not hungry. Let me know if you have any addtional questions.

Revision due to Reflux and scared!!

I am having revision due to gurd, gastritis, esophagitis and not losing enough weight. GS 12/02/2014. RNY 10/23/2020.
  13. I had a sleeve July 2019 due to a lot of issues had a revision to gastric bypass 2/2020 had not had any candy at all in that timeframe. We had a 21st birthday celebration for my daughter and I avoided all cake, soda and other goodies at the party but while cleaning up there was one leftover peanut butter cup left in the candy dish and I rationalized it in my head that well it’s peanut butter and peanut butter is a source of protein (I know I was making excuses to myself to eat it) so I popped it in my mouth and chewed it up. About 5-10 minutes afterward I started feeling sweaty and nauseated (not like I need to vomit just an icky feeling). My family has a history of diabetes (not me personally but my dad and brother are both insulin dependent. Do you think since I had the surgery I better get checked for diabetes? (I don’t plan to try and eat candy again but wasn’t sure if this is a “normal” reaction to introducing sugar to my new body or something else)

    September Sleevers Update

I'm doing fine (surgery on 9/21). Down 19 since surgery and 56 total, so feeling good about my progress. I have been pushing a bit too fast with eating foods I probably shouldn't, but my body lets me know right away. If I stick to the plan, I feel OK, other than being tired a lot. I'm over halfway to my goal, so I'm anxious to get there.

    What was/is your greatest fear?

My biggest fears are: 1. Dying- I am the breadwinner for my family, have two young children, and two elderly parents with dementia I take care of. I need to be here because there are a lot of people counting on me for pretty much everything. 2. It not working- I feel like I hear so many horror stories of it not working, or people losing only a small amount of weight before nothing happening. I know it generally works, but you can’t help but be concerned that you might go through all this for nothing. 3. Regain. This is not my first rodeo with weight loss. Over 10 years ago I lost 150 lbs (without surgery) and had an amazing experience being “thin” for the first time in my life with all the accolades, pride, etc that comes with it. Only to gain it all back plus a lot more. I am doing everything I can to try to make this time different but I’ve done it to myself before and I’m terrified I’ll do it again. 4. My freaking insurance finding some dumb loophole to deny my surgery that they submitted for last week! Or Covid causing elective surgeries to be cancelled again and my husband losing his job that has the Bariatric coverage medical insurance before they resume surgery. Or basically some new reason that I get denied after so many years trying to make this work. 5. Complications: a leak, chronic issues, being nauseous forever, a clot, having to have the surgery revised later due to gerd, or any other issues that I can think of. So basically what are my greatest fears? Everything, it looks like. Ha!

    Anyone for September 2020?

I’m in solid right now thank you for answering me I was losing but because I’m in the moving process like moving so they take my balance for me to weight my self so I don’t know if I lost weight. Right now I can’t eat like six nuggets taking the breading out of the nuggets  and a cheeseburger the party of the happy meal cheeseburger just a party and the cheese and  feel like not fill me up but if I eat chicken and I fill me up but I’m tired of chicken and I can eat like shrimp like eight or nine or 10 maybe  the little ones or medium ones and I feel like at the beginning give me pain but now I don’t know if I stretch my sleeve that now I can eat more and feel more hungry and I’m worry about it.

    Anyone for October 2020?

Mine is on Wednesday 10/21. Pre-op diet has made me feel sick most of the time & made gerd feelings worse. I have fallen off of it a little a few times but I’ve lost almost 20lbs in 12 days. I’m scared my liver won’t be shrunk enough. Also, Tuesday I have to drink a bottle of magnesium citrate. Hopefully that won’t make me puke. I’m extremely nervous and can’t sleep. Stomach aches all the time. I’m constantly hungry. Questioning a lot right now. I do love this group and I thank you for sharing your stories.
  22. The vacation was great and lovely and I stayed very active while still getting to sample foods I hadn't yet tried since surgery.  After getting back, I decided to stay off of social media for a little while, which also included these forums.  I had a lot of work in the office to catch up on and needed to focus on that.  Of course, the past week or so I have been struggling a lot mentally and emotionally.  I've desperately wanted comfort food and have done well not giving into that temptation.  This week doesn't feel like it'll go much better, but October always seems to be the worst month for me.

Had an anxiety dream last night involving a substantial weight gain in the past week.  Absolutely no basis in reality since I've stayed on plan.  I think it stems from Saturday when I ate some extra calories due to a 2 hour hike earlier in the day that burned 900 calories.  The extra calories brought my total intake up for 1025, as opposed to 700-800.  And my extra calories were from curry egg salad, so it was a protein packed choice.  And yet, my brain some how decided that would lead me to gain 10 pounds in one week and threw that are me while I slept.  Brains can be jerks.

Glad to hear you are doing ok. I noticed you missing from here and was a bit concerned as it sounded like you were dealing with some stuff.

Great work with staying on plan on vacation! Always a tougher than the routine at home.

      Welcome back!

    The Process

Let's see: 1. Like you, I had to attend a seminar 2. There was a list of tests I had to undergo - EKG, Endoscopy, Colonoscopy, check X-ray, blood work and a bunch of other stuff 3. My insurance had a 6 month "weight loss counseling" requirement, so I had appointments once a month for that. 4. After the 6 months, I had an all day appointment where I met with the surgeon, a psychologist, a nutritionist, a nurse practitioner, insurance specialists and some other folks I can't remember 5. My surgeon's office requested pre-auth from my insurance and got it 6. We scheduled my surgery and it took place on 3/26/2019. That's about how it went, as I remember. Hope that helps!
  24. It's unusual, but it can happen. And it would still be very disappointing to have significant regain, even if it's only, say, half. I've heard that almost everyone has a small amount of regain (10-20 pounds) from their lowest, and I would be ok with that if I hit my goal, but not much more than that.

wow.... congrats. You are a success. We have the same status.. pretty much. I'm 5'2" and started my journey with LB 2009 @ 232lbs. Got and stayed at 143lbs for years.... band removal 2017. Was able to keep my weight with in 10-15 till i hit menopause at 50-51. I tried everything to get it off. Didn't have much luck. I had been looking for a dr. that would do a revision, but they all said i didn't weigh enough. The end of 2018 beginning of 2019 i packed on more weight. Got to 173lbs. I was at my wits end when i found my dr. here that agree to do the Sleeve at a 31Bmi. In May we took a pre-honeymoon to Italy and i felt terrible. (plus i had hurt my ankle 4 weeks earlier at crossfit falling off the ab machine). That same May i finally got my property settlement from my ex and i took 14k and invested it in ME..... So 8/28/19 i had the sleeve done and i went from 173 to 120 in 10 months. I sure hope i have the continued success you have. I can honestly say that i think if you do the liq diet for one week you will lose that 10lbs..... but you should go to your GYN and maybe look into hormone replacement. I'm on Estradiol tab. 1mg
