My surgeon recommended 2 forms of bc just to because of the major hormone changes that occur with rapid weight loss. I refuse to use hormonal bc so we were a condom couple until we started TTC. I figured if I could still get pregnant on the pill, I would rather just risk a condom and leave the hormones out of the equation.

Congrats Bryn! I like the snarky coworker one- I can relate totally. I have a snarky, jealous coworker. She always looked down on me for getting the surgery-- she would say "I would never get weight loss surgery thats the easy way out" She was about my size before surgery and she is such a jealous snot. She declined all my super cute size Silver brand 20 and 22 jeans because she said they would be "way too big" ha ha ha So I lied and said try these on they are 18's. (they were the 20's and 22's) and they fit her perfectly (even a bit snug) and she took about 10 pairs of Silver jeans off my hands. lol Then I was like ooops I guess these are the 22's. he he he Meanwhile I am wearing super cute 16's yay!

*~January 2011 Bandsters~*
Shelley64 replied to amberakamom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 1/11/11. I had lost 15 lbs pre-surgery and have only lost another pound since then. About 2 1/2 weeks after my surgery, I noticed that I wasn't as satisfied after eating a small amount and I got hungry sooner. I thought it was all in my head but I went in yesterday for a fill and the nurse told me that is what happens when the stomach swelling goes down after it's healed. My chart said I had 2 cc's in during surgery but she was only able to pull 1 cc out and then added 2 more. I hope I get that "in control" feeling I had post-op. I've been walking on my lunch hour and doing some fitness bands at home but I know I'll need to do more to achieve my goals. I certainly don't want to become a gym junkie mainly because it's not realistic if you have a job and a family that you care about. I just want to be healthy and feel good about myself and my progress. I hope March brings some decent weight loss so I can meet my mini-goal by my birthday on June 7th! -
INPUT FROM EVERYONE NEEDED
vlp1968 replied to BarbieBamm's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My 2 cents is to start excersising if you haven't already. Start out slow and gradually increase your intensity/duration. It has so many benefits, just one being weight loss. You can do this! -
You will not get instant results and I learned that early on. Then I realized slow is the best way because any other nurse I worked with that had gastric bypass and NOT lap band lost fast and has gained it all back. So relax and it will happen. Remind yourself of your rules...eat slower 30 min, small bites chew well...this a life change not weight loss sprint. By the way I was banded 4/2012 and as of today I have lost 51 lbs so for 4months out you are doing well. The numbers going down is always good!!

From Lapband To Sleeve?
GoingforGoal replied to jadekatz's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Jade, There is no easy solution. It's a misperception to believe wls does the job for you. No matter what surgery you get, you will have to abide by the rules 100% to reap the benefits. Revisions are great when you are suffering true complications and one surgery is not working out for you. But I know my doc wouldn't qualify someone who just doesn't want to put the work in. They'll predict it'll be the same scenario under another procedure which requires just as much diligence and compliance. Getting wls and getting results takes dedication and work. The difference between pre and post op is that these procedures can help you with things like hunger management, portion control which in the long run will be critical for maintenance. Also, counting calories and understanding how much you are putting into your body allows you to get an understanding of what it means to be on target or to overindulge. It took me years of counting to finally get to a place that I can estimate with accuracy and no longer count. But the reality is, if I consume more than my allotment, I will stall or gain. Weight loss has a very simple formula that cannot by bypassed- weight loss= calories consumed - calories burned. You either workout or you limit intake. No wls changes that. -

Revision from Lap Band to Gastric Bypass
hharrison43 replied to hharrison43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Thanks for your post and help! Hopefully Tricare won't be as strict about the second surgery. I do know they said they only pay for one weight loss surgery per lifetime, but also said hey would consider if having problems, which I am. Irisheyes72, good luck with your surgery!! Hope it all went well!! Let me know how the surgery went and keep me posted. -
You looks fabulous, what an amazing transformation. Can I ask you about eating out. When do you start eating regular food. I am so worried I will become anti social and will never be able to go out to dinner with friends. And also worried about hair loss, how long before your hair goes back to normal?

Donali's sister, Cheryl, called me an hour ago. Sorry it took so long to post but I'm going in too many directions this evening. Donali was in surgery 4 hours. Cheryl didn't call them "complications" but the surgeon had some repairs to do. I don't have any other information yet, other than her sister is with her at The Oasis Hospital, and her mom is waiting at home for her in San Diego. I think we can all agree that she's truly amazing. Actually, you all are. Cheryl told me Don was touched with all the support here. Believe it or not, I'm at loss for words.

First Meal Out-Happy And Just Had To Share!
TheRealMeIsHere! replied to 101driver's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I ate out for the first time since surgery today, also. My sister and I went to a Japanese restaurant (which I've never done before) Before that I waited 2 1/2 hours in the mall while she got her hair done. In the past, after waiting that long and smelling and seeing mall food, I would've probably eaten something, anything while waiting, then been starving at the restaurant and wanted everything, then felt guilty afterward. Today, I drank a Protein shake, bought some jewelry, drank my Water and people watched. At the restaurant, I ordered crab salad and told them to bring it when my sister's dinner was ready. Totally enjoyed watching the chef cook and do all that amazing showy stuff. Took a bite of my sister's appetizer, salad and one shrimp. My crab salad was delicious!! REAL crab, not too much mayo and caviar on top. I was able to eat half. I left feeling satisfied, happy, relaxed and thankful for my sleeve. It is so liberating to have my sleeve to help me stay in control. -
Fidelis managed Medicaid in NY state

I think I only had to do 3-4 months supervised weight loss. The nutritionist was a bit of a drive, so I did one of my supervised WL visits with her and the rest with my PCP. -
Congrats!! On your banded baby an on your weight loss.

Hi Laura. My name is Maxi. Wow. You have done GREAT with your 95 lb weight loss. CONGRATULATIONS! I started the process (somewhat) in October 2009 but did not really make the decision until 5/10 when I got approval after having been initially denied by my insurance. I had my surgery in 9/10 and have lost 34 lbs so far. I lost 15 lbs pre op and 19 lbs post op. My weight has come off slow, much slower than yours. I've had 2 fills so far, for a total of 4cc in a 10cc band. I'll have my 3rd fill in a few days. Like you, I also feel that having the band was the best decision I ever made. It was a hard decision for me, though. You can see how long it took me to make that decision. Even after attending an info session about the band, I still took a while to come around to this decision. Now I know that it was the right decision for me. I'm so glad I had the band surgery. For the first time I believe I will permanently lose this excess weight. I live in the NYC area. I went to NYU for my weight loss surgery because they have such a good program. Maxi

Diet restriction after an unfil?
TracyNYC replied to Mel Mel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I am unfilled because my band slipped. I also had no instructions other than try not to go crazy. I did lose 10 lbs in a week b/c of the slip and not keeping anything down. Since mu unfill 2 weeks ago today I have gained 13. I have been eating horribly, but also know the last 10 pounds I lost were not a healthy loss. I can't wait to be refilled after my revision and get back on track. Good luck with your test. -
Awww! Congratulations on your baby boy! And your incredible weight loss. I was banded 12.21.12 and stories like these help keep me motivated! Thanks for sharing and keep up the awesome work!

Hi Everyone, I'm Linda, from Greenwood, Indiana. I first saw a doctor on July 3rd, just a consultation for anyone who wanted information about weight loss surgery, one of those group meetings. I had already decided I wanted Lap Band, so I stayed and filled out the paper work for insurance approval etc. I expected two or three months just to get approval or longer, then all the test that follow and surgery in 5 or 6 months. I got a call the last week in July from the surgeon, saying they had approval, and giving me a surgery date of Sept. 8th. I was in shock all day! I've already had the psych. eval. and go for pre-op Diet & nutrition consultation on Friday. This is all moving so fast! I'm a teacher and go back to work on Aug. 18th, then three weeks later I'm off for surgery. Not the best timing, but I'm putting myself and my health first this time! I'm wondering how fast I'll recover and be able to go back to work. What were your experiences????

4 weeks out ~ starting to get an appetite.
carolann0117 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 4 weeks out from my surgery (Dec. 27th). I noticed this weekend that I'm really starting to get an appetite. I was at a conference this weekend and wasn't allowed to bring in food. soooo looking for the most "mushie" food I could find, I found myself eating 3/4 of a tuna sandwich. I guess from reading everyone's posts here, I was surprised that I was able to eat the bread. I have lost only a few ounces this week . I was very spoiled by losing so much so fast.. now I seem to be slowing down. I also started doing some serious walking this last week. I don't know if I'm gaining muscle and it's out-weighing the fat loss, (or what)... ?? Does this mean I'm soon ready for a fill soon? I'm getting nervous that I'll hit a plateau. Other than my worrying about feeling hungry and not losing .... I'm feeling GREAT!!! How are you all doing/did at 4 weeks out??? -
Hi Everyone! I'm back and ready to rock and roll after a few crazy months. It started with a bad tummy virus which made it impossible to keep down any food or even Water. I guess the stomach gets inflamed and what was a nice amt of restriction turned into way tooo much. So they had to remove all the Fluid from the band. I was freefalling baby! Once my tummy was better I went a cruise and really from there the summer was not a great time for me. I ended up gaining about 8lbs back from my loss (boo hiss) but since getting refilled two times I have lost all of that and am now on my way to losing more. I'm a good restriction level which will prevent me from overeating. I'm also making great choices again. I had some gyn surgery 1.5 wks ago so I haven't been able to exercise yet but I plan on starting up just as soon as possible...maybe tomorrow since I'm feeling half way decent. I was doing so well before the summer...on the treadmill for one hour per day RELIGIOUSLY, doing crunches and I even started some universal arm work. But typical of me, once I fell off the wagon....I FELL OFF! lol So, how is everyone else doing? I miss hearing about everyone. I promise not to vanish again. I know we can all have a GREAT 1 yr BANDIVERSARY if we stick together. Hugz to everyone! JPT

Do you have all the specific information from your insurance about whether they cover weight loss surgery and if they do what the requirements are? My understanding is that the doctor normally submit your first way in to the insurance. My BMI was significantly higher so they want you to lose weight to make the surgery easier and also to show that you are committed to the process.

Finally, I've been motivated to exercise. I was banded back in Sept 2010 and I decided to wait until around 90 days post op to begin a decent exercise regime. My daughter plays basketball and fortunately for me her high school is brand new which includes a state of the art exercise facility and a indoor track. I've been hitting the track 3 times a week for at least a hour. My latest accomplishment has been 30 laps in 60 minutes. Now let me just say this my mouth be dry, my legs burn like crazy and my breathing is finally getting better. The down side for me is my hair!!! My edges get nappy pretty quickly from the sweat because my hair is natural and pressed out not relaxed. Moving on. I only know I'm losing weight because other people tell me. I don't own a scale. I have missed my last two doctor appts because of the snow and bad roads here in Michigan. I know I need a fill for several reasons the main one being when I went in for my last fill the darn nurse couldn't get any in the band but somehow she managed to take some out probably leaving me without anything at all. I want to start working on my arms and toning my belly down but I'm afraid I'm going to somehow hurt the band. Any suggestions on this would be great. What are you guys eating for Protein? How many meals a day are u getting in? I'm just releasing some thoughts that have been on my mind.

emotional breakdowns?
dietpeach replied to chelerhea's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What would help me in a situation like this is to accept a small piece of cake, take it back to my desk, not eat it at work, bring it home, wrap it and freeze it. Tell yourself that "someday" you'll have it - after you're on regular foods. That's only if I feel I'll get upset over the "loss." Even better is not to bring it home at all, but just promise yourself that if you still want it when you're on solids, you'll go buy or bake some. By the time solids comes around, you'll probably forget you ever wanted it. And if you haven't, you can make that one of your occasional treats. During my pre-op and post-op liquid phase, if my family ate something and I felt "deprived," I'd take out a portion and put it in the blender, and then freeze it to eat during my mushy phase. Now that I'm in the mushy phase, I don't even want that food anymore, and haven't eaten a single one. But at the time, it made me feel better and helped get me through. It's hard to not be allowed to eat anything - don't add mental or emotional pressure to the stress. Telling yourself you can "never" have it again could make you cry, but it isn't really true. You can have it again, but not too much and not too often - and not right now. (((hugs))) -
Relax. The hair loss will stop around 6-7 months post op. It's more a reaction to the anesthesia than the lapband postop way of eating. It's only temporary.

Hi! I'm a newbie here. My name is Susan and I'm 61 years old. I've been on the diet roller-coaster since I was 18. Usually I'd lose 30 pounds. Then gain it back plus. Up and down up and down. I just can't go through another diet only to 'fail' again. I needed something to help me keep it off. I started to read everything I could on weight loss surgery. Thirty years ago I remember thinking to myself that if I had the means I would definitely have opted to have it. Now that the means are available I am looking forward to it. Currently I am 250 pounds with a BMI of 30. I am 5'5 with a large frame. My goal would be perfect at 150. I am on day four of the liquid diet and I feel crappy. I have caffeine withdrawal headaches because I had to stop diet coke. Are there others like me who are having the same problems? How long will they last? I don't want to get discouraged but when I think of eight more days of this I'm not sure I'll make it. Thanks for listening.
