  1. I know these people exist, but for me I can't see having any issues hitting those kind of numbers at 6 months out. My doc wanted us on 3 meals a day and that was it - no snacks. There was no way I could do that. I had to aim for 3-4 meals plus a protein shake to hit my 60g for a day. I probably average 1600 calories a day being a year out. Truth be told I could easily be over 2000 if I wanted to. It's all about what you eat and how often. Yes, my portions have to be smaller, but if I wanted to graze all day long I could and easily rack up the calories. Even with healthy options like cottage cheese or Greek yogurt those are easy to get down. Really it isn't anything you should be overly concerned about IMO.
  2. Wow, that would be a cake walk! I'm going to suggest the peanut butter smoothie too. But the sad thing is a full serving of yogurt jacks with my blood sugar, and I haven't ruled out if the peanuts butter powder is also making my ears ring. Don't know where that is coming from, only that it's gotten crazy making bad since starting this 9 days ago and there could be so many sources. You know? Why can't it be simple?
  3. Thanks for the encouragement ladies. I hate whining and not being an encouragement on here. *sigh* I just sent an email to the RD and will see what she says. @kakatlady612 I truly don't know if I have any switches available. I can't do soy cuz of er/per+ BC--onc's orders. The other vegan proteins are high in phytoestrogens as well. And the egg white protein gave me ringing ears and asthma worse than milk (although I'm not allergic to eggs that I'm aware). I do have some milk sensitivity but am ok with cheese and yogurt in small amounts.
  4. Bummer, Fluffy Dr. Weiner suggests an alternative online: 1 c. yogurt, 1 banana, 4T PB2 or natural PB (http://drmatthewweiner.com/a-better-protein-shake/). Maybe you can run that by your dr? I personally like sfh Pure from Whole Foods, but if whey's the problem, its not for you. I've always wondered about the non-whey powders -- now I know I don't need to try them!

    Recipes

This is one of my staple diet foods now. It's chicken salad so not exactly anything new, but adding in things like almonds (or walnuts) and dried cranberries give it a nice twist. I used to do a half & half mix of Greek Yogurt and light mayo (1 cup of each) but now go with the yogurt alone. Yields about six 1-cup servings. Truth be told most days I can only manage about 3/4 of a cup on it's own, or I do 1/2 a cup and mix in with my small salad. If you want a lower carb version just drop the cranberries and that takes out around 11g of carbs per serving. Edit: Just to clarify I cut the almonds, cranberries, and celery up into really small pieces and mix in with everything else.
  6. Congrats! Best decision. Ever. I didn’t do the unflavored protein- i did the premiere shakes ... and eventually shredded canned chicken (it’s like tuna consistency) and scrambled egg whites , cheese stick and Greek yogurts for protein Didn’t do compression socks— hospital was really fast! HW 242 SW 236- December 20, 2017 CW 199 GW 160
  7. Unflavored Protein didn't work out for me , I tried Isopure but could still taste it another version may be better I was instructed to track liquids in a log, by time 1/4 cup portions Max in 30 mins when in full liquids (cream of wheat, yogurt ) Used a timer for everything EVERYTHING KEEP food AND LIQUIDS SEPARATED BY 30 MINS ON EITHER SIDE OF CONSUMPTION I add premier caramel shake to decaf coffee it's the only way I tolerate the shakes Lump in my throat was my almost full indicator, never ate past it if I can help it I start my day with liquids instead of food I do Protein liquids before others to make sure it's done No compression socks Hope that helped
  8. So, was sleeved 3 weeks ago today, spent time recovering and now continuing my journey through central/South America. Finding it hard to locate good food sources, as Greek yogurt not common, and a lot of meals are based around maize and beans etc. In terms of eating I’m managing 1 scrambled egg for breakfast (takes a good 30mins to get it down) and drinking lots of water, but worried I’m not getting enough protein. Have tried pharmacies for protein and protein bars but all seem to carry a lot higher sugar and carb content than I’ve been used to and am allowed. Anyone else been travelling straight after surgery? Any ideas? Also still have wicked pain and bruising from major incision site - is that normal after 3 weeks? I would have thought it would have eased up by now. Every other site including drain site is healed and fine. Thanks.
  9. For the first several months I would read a book while eating to force myself to slow down. I would take a bite, read 2-3 pages, take another bite, read 2-3 pages. That helped me stretch it out. But, yeah, I still ate the really soft foods quickly (yogurt, soup, etc) It's pretty hard to "chew" yogurt for 20 seconds My full feeling was really hard for me to recognize for awhile. It is just a little bit of heaviness in my belly (just below my sternum) and then if I keep going a little past that I will typically burp or my nose starts running a little bit and those clues are my big red stop signs. If I continue on I will hit the painfully full stage and really regret the last few bites.

    Help!

If you like to cook your meals, then you might want to check out the website: theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com She has lots of bariatric friendly recipes. She is a former WLS patient. I tried the ricotta bake, pretty much a no carb, high protein meal, it was delicious and quick and easy to make. I think I will try making the BBQ Beef Bites this week, virtually no carbs, packed with protein and easy to make. Snacks: I do almonds, yogurt, cottage cheese with cut up cucumbers, Salted caramel/chocolate Atkins bar (high fiber, very low carb, hardly any sugar, some protein)--very yummy for a snack or treat. Cut up veggies, I like to keep these in the fridge to snack on: baby carrots, red pepper strips, cucumbers. If you want something crunchy and protein packed, but no carb, make some homemade cheese crisps. Just do a search for them, they are so easy. You can eat them plain, or dip them in hummus (yum), or a homemade plain yogurt based spinach dip.

    Help!

I know it can get a little boring....yogurt water pee, shake water chicken pee water shake pee chicken repeat I love lobster, I mix up ground sirloin or ground chicken with veggies, cheese and tomato sauce Pre-cooked chicken strips and chicken meatballs nice quick go-to as well. Mussels another one you can mix in there or oysters if you like shellfish...Shrimp?
  12. I really don't know my calories any more as I don't track as religiously. I would say around 1200-1400 as due to my workouts, my nutritionist wanted me to add some fruit nut or additional yogurt. Coming off a plastic surgery with no gym and then holidays, I would say I was not on diet the entire time. But, I did not gain. You want to keep tracking as best as possible, I do stick to the same balance at most meals, they are just larger than when first started. Your activity may affect how much you can or should take in.
  13. This sounds great! I make it with flavored sf jello. Cuz you know, better living through chemistry! I also the creamy protein soups made not only with the cream of chicken, but also with cream of mushroom, and creamy poblano soups. Be sure to strain them though! Also with tomato soup it's a killer, too! I've also added unflavored to V-8, season it a little, then warm it. Tastes a little like tomato soup. I also mix some protein powder with sf jello and either cottage cheese and blend it up til smooth, then thin it down, or add Greek yogurt so it's more like a jello salad. Mom used to make that when we were little using either sour cream or cream cheese. It was lovely. You can also use ricotta instead and not have to blend it.

Can’t drink protein shakes! Post op

Oh wow that sounds horrible! I get tired of sweets so I definitely understand but I’m glad you found an alternative:) unfortunately I’m not allowed yogurt during this stage. That’ll be my next phase

    Low Carb or not....

Nut milk has no protein because it’s basically water that they wash the nuts with and then remove the nuts. So no real transfer of protein. Nuts have protein, for sure, but they also have fat and carbs. They are a great balanced food. If you aren’t sensitive to fake sugars try the no sugar added flavored yogurt— Dannon light and fit and such. Their protein is higher than the naturally occurring carbs from the milk. If you are sensitive to them try like Oikos triple zero which uses stevia and fruit juice. It’s carbs are only slightly higher.

    Food Restrictions

I didnt really have any restrictions, but it is rare I eat white bread, pasta or rice. Maybe once a week I will have a serving of whole wheat pasta, rice or bread. Bread is usually 1/2 a serving, as it tends to swell more. I do eat my protein first. But it seems like if I dont balance it out with a carb, my stomach hates me for 4 or 5 hours. I am guessing because it is harder to digest? I can do canned chicken, or the perdue shortcuts chicken. Other chicken I cant. Turkey I cant unless smothered in gravy. Pork and ham, cant do. They actually hurt. Steak if cooked medium I can do it, but chewed really good and can only eat about an ounce. Beef, eh, depends on how tender it is. Tuna canned. Fish, not really. So I am quite limited on protein. I do cheese and string cheese, but again they also have carbs. I could live on yogurt! SW 350 (11/15) BSW 260 (10/17/17) CW 216.1 (2/4/18) RGW 199 GW 175

    Low Carb or not....

Idk, I havent restricted carbs yet, but starting to think I need to. I actually emailed my dietician yesterday about carb amount (i was really limited, because I used to be diabetic, notice I say used to be!) calorie and fat amounts. I eat alot of greek yogurt, and I love citrus fruits. These are carbs though. Is there low carb yogurt that isnt plain? I cant do cottage cheese. I have been trying to cut down onthe protein shakes, because if expense, but feeling I may have to incorporate them again. I use them in the evening for whatever protein I need to hit 70 g a day. I do not do regular milk (skim) unless I am cooking or making pudding. I use Silk nut milk. It may have carbs, but the protein outweighs that compared to Almond milk which has no protein!(How does a nut milk not have protein? That makes no sense to me!) I was sleeved 10/17/17 if that helps, almost 4 months out. Ty for any insight. SW 350 (11/15) BSW 260 (10/17/17) CW 216.1 (2/4/18) RGW 199 GW 175

    No-No Foods

Anything high sugar makes my stomach hurt and sometimes throw up. So now I limit my sugar intake to a quarter cup of granola once in awhile with some Greek yogurt. That's it for sweets and sugars Sent from my SM-G935T using BariatricPal mobile app

5 years post op weight gain :(

It is common to have some limited weight gain after gastric bypass surgery. They call it a 20 pound bounce. The important thing is not let go beyond it. According to my nutritionist, meals should consist of equal parts of protein, fats and carbs after the first couple years post-op. Snacks should be limited to primarily whole food options: nuts, natural nut butters, fruits, veggies, boiled eggs, string cheese, yogurt with berries and almonds, tuna pouches. Avoid processed packaged foods as much as possible. So I guess my advise is to document what you eat in a food journal and figure out what is the cause. I had RNY gastric bypass whereas you had the sleeve. I am 5 years post-op and this is the approach that I use. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

    Dr. Matthew Weiner

Really??? LOL I actually think it's pretty darn different. The standard advice is to eat your protein (and the word "protein" in that context almost always means meat or dairy) first and then if you can fit in other healthy foods, do it. (As you mentioned in your post, fitting in 1-2 oz of broccoli around your protein, maybe, if you have room.) In contrast to this Dr. Weiner strongly emphasizes eating vegetables first and fitting in protein around that. He also recommends plant foods - veggies and legumes and fruit and raw nuts - ahead of meat and dairy and has fairly low protein requirements - about 50g compared to many bariatric plans encouraging 80-100g. (Of course he isn't vegan by any stretch and I've seen him recommend yogurt smoothies and small amounts of animal protein, etc. He even said in one video that he doesn't think that a fully plant-based diet is "necessary for the general population." So yeah, while we're claiming him he's not necessarily "ours," know what I mean? Just a good resource!) While Dr. Weiner's diet is "low carb" compared to our pre-op sugary diets, it's certainly not low carb in the bariatric sense. You can't eat many fruits and certainly not any beans and whole grains and still remain under 30-50g carbs. It's also low-fat. Difficult to be low-fat and low-carb at the same time! He also promotes eating in abundance instead of focusing on calories, a huge difference from most bariatric plans. You just need to eat your abundance from healthy plant foods (Obviously you still end up eating fewer calories because you're eating high-volume, low-calorie foods but it's the mindset that helps make a difference!) So on a spectrum with keto/Atkins on the left and veganism on the right I'd say he's definitely well across the center line to the right, while most bariatric plans are basically keto except with low-fat dairy and some wiggle room for beans. Sorry for the long post, Fluff - I am fully carbed again, having eaten an abundance of fruit, oats, and rice in the last couple of days that I've been free from my liquid diet. So I'm all peppy and ready to argue again!!! Heehee!
  21. Ha! So glad you find it helpful and not tiresome--like--why in hell does she keep blatherin' on over here? Can't she see no one cares? LOL, but it helps me regardless, cuz I've been able to go back and see my progress, and it feels good to make it to 6 days without cheats. I can't emphasize enough, THIS is a hard 2 weeks. LOL. I think I didn't fully "get it" until I was in it. Weird but true. Here's my post op plan: STAGE 1: Day 1 & 2 - Liquid Diet (minimum 48-64oz liquids per day) sugar free clear liquids (1oz per 15 minutes=4oz per hour) - (water, calorie free non-carbonated drinks, sugar free fitness waters, decaff coffee or tea, sugar free jello, clear broths) STAGE 2: Day home from hospital continuing 2 weeks - Full Liquid Diet (minimum 48-64oz liquids/45-60g protein per day) Volume Measurement: 1/8-1/4 cup sugar free clear liquids as described in Stage 1 (no more than 8oz of any liquid per hour) protein powders or RTD drinks (must be less than 4g of sugar per drink and have a minimum of 15g protein per 8fl oz) other acceptable fluids: Tomato or V-8 vegetable juice (no fruit versions), no sugar/fat free fudgesicles, skim or Lactaid milk, Fairlife milk, strained cream soups made with skim milk, thinned down plain Greek yogurt (up to a 1/2cup serving size), sugar free pudding made with skim milk (up to 1/2cup serving size), cream of wheat thinned with skim milk and protein powder added no fruit juices or sugar sweetened drinks STAGE 3: Beginning Week 3 and progressing to regular textured diet (slowly) - (minimum 48-64oz liquids per day/60-80g protein per day, eat 3 meals + 1-2 snacks daily) Volume Measurement: 1/4-1/2 cup all liquids as described in Stages 1 & 2 do not drink with meals or snacks (30 minutes before or after) start with pureed foods and slowly progress to soft solids then to regular textured foods--follow the surgeon's recommendations for advancement. Each phase will take 1-2 weeks per phase within this Stage 3 framework. chew foods to applesauce consistency, take bites no larger than a dime, eat slowly, take 20-30 minutes per scheduled meal/snack eat protein first at every meal >> follow with well-cooked mushy veggies when tolerable >> follow with canned fruits in water or natural juices limit sugar to 4g per serving and limit foods to those with sugar NOT within the first 5 listed ingredients limit fats to 6g per serving no liquid calories; no grazing (exception is 1-2 protein drinks per day until all food needs can be met with real food) introduce foods 1 at a time and keep a journal of any symptoms or pouch intolerance WeightLossStage3.pdf STAGE 4: Beginning around Week 6-7 and continuing for life - (minimum of 64oz liquids per day/60-80g protein per day, eat 3 meals + 1 high protein snack per day Volume Measurement: 1/2-1 cup or 4-8oz by weight per meal, 1/4-1/2 cup or 1-2oz by weight per snack sugar free clear liquids as described in Stage 1 protein first >> nuts/seeds/legumes >> low glycemic veggies >> low glycemic fruits >> low glycemic starches/grains eat slowly 20-30minutes per meal and stop at the first signal of fullness or "being done" (amount of food tolerated at one time will depend on the type of food and dryness of the food and if you are well-hydrated) introduce new foods slowly, 1 at a time and make note of any intolerances fibrous tough foods should be added very slowly and with great care WeightLossStage4.pdf

    OCTOBER SLEEVERS CHECK IN HERE

I think you look great! Great job at sticking with it. Stalls are hard. I usually switch stuff up, because it seems like when I eat the same foods all the time, the scale does not move. Like I cut out steel cut oatmeal, and now doing yogurt with granola. I agree about logging every bite. Maybe too many carbs, or maybe too many calories? I use myfitnesspal and every time I eat something I immediately go to the app and log what I ate or am eating. Good luck! I hope your stall ends soon! 23. (note - I posted this in the wrong area, and have no idea how to delete that) Hi everyone! I've been on a work project and away from home for about a week so have been totally negligent on posting - Hope, did you have your procedure? You said it was Feb 6 but I haven't seen an actual post that you did it and how you are feeling and doing? I've been doing well- down 26.5lbs since the Nov 8 procedure, and 5.5lbs away from my goal. Just saw my doc for our 2nd post op visit and she said I've lost 16% of my weight in the 3 months and doing great! Also got blood work follow up done. Getting results in now and should hear from her soon on that. I can see that my cholesterol is still high- so I expect some meds in my future. My daily foods have remained pretty consistant. Yogurt/blueberries for Breakfast (and coffee), then a Protein Shake. lunch over the last week has been salad with grilled chicken - but the diff is, that I bought the big salad and it lasted for 4 lunches rather than 1 or 2. Have also added a nightly snack of Halo Top - but instead of the whole pint, I measure out 4oz and it's plenty and satisfying. So, all seems to be working in terms of satisfaction and fullness - but I still weigh everything when I can to keep me honest - since I don't trust my eyes Glad to see everyone doing so great! Shout outs toTex and Mel, and Luv who appears to be new since I've been here last. AmyA

  25. I am sorry that I can't really give advice on this issue, but I want to say that I can definitely identify with you, although I am not quite as far out as you are. I am 15 months post sleeve. Other than the 9 pounds I lost last week (I was in hospital and couldn't keep down any food), I have stayed and bounced from 190-200 lbs for the last 4 months. My surgeon's goal weight for me is 175. Sitting at 190 as of today. Like you, I have current health conditoons that I am working on with my surgeon and gastro doctor. Because of multiple open abdominal surgeries, I deal with chronic pain, and even though I have lost over 140 lbs, I haven't been able to get to the point where I am able to exercise much. Also, like you, I am letting the carbs sneak in. The main culprits for me are yogurt and cream of mushroom soup. Not wanting to go on about my health issues, but I am very limited right now as to what I am able to consume without getting sick. Protein shakes I do fine, cream soups and broths with my Isopure unflavored protein powder. I am going way over 50 grams a day in carbs....this has really brought my weight loss to a screeching halt. @Twinmom07 I don't mean to take over your thread, I hope someone out there has some suggestions for both of us. I really want to get to my doctor's goal weight and I'm only 15 pounds away from it.
