Hi, Tina, Dr Kim did my inverted sleeve 4 years ago. Hes a great doctor! He doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to your health. He cares about his patients and doesn't sugar coat anything. He is straight forward and I like that in a surgeon. His office was always so nice to me. I've lost 90 pounds and have kept it off. The after care support is amazing with support groups once a month you can watch online since you live so far away. There is also a private patient only Facebook support group that is very encouraging as well. We do lots of fun things together each month. The key to success is staying connected to a support system and to have WLS friends that used the same bariatric office makes a HUGE difference! They have a hiatal hernia program if you have insurance. Its a discount program. Give them a call. You will not regret it!

Hope you don't get a large bill from them after your HH discount program. Insurances aren't paying for the HH repair anymore especially if you have an exclusion on your policy. They have found out bariatric surgery is being done at the same time.

Anyone have Silicone Toxicity from Lap Band?
kimberlyhopkins replied to kimberlyhopkins's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Yes I have extreme fatigue and insomnia as well as numbness and tingling in my hands and feet.I am waiting to see a Bariatric surgeon to see if he thinks it's a possibility but the wait list to see him is about 72 weeks as it's considered non emergency. -

Skin issues and older sleevers
keepingmysecrets replied to akusah's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My weight loss of 164 pounds has left me with terrible looking upper arms and a lot of loose skin on my stomach. I still want to lose between 87 and 100 more pounds. My bariatric surgeon will take off the stomach skin eventually if I can pass the surgical exam at by then age 67 or so. My insurance requires documentation of the skin causing problems like rashes and/or interference in agility, and also a two year wait with 6 months of documentation of a stable weight. Once I get the sleeve surgery, I will likely have more accelerated weight lost with accelerated skin saggyness. The surgeon will not fix the upper arms and I cannot afford cosmetic surgery so I fear that I will have those forever. Still, I would rather have the loose skin over the filled in skin filled with fat. -
Anyone Have Problems With Pcp Recommendation?
simplejaxgirl replied to cmathews77's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would have an honest conversation with them regarding your previous weight loss attempts and ask for their advice. If they are not on board, then I would advise 'interviewing' and searching for another PCP who is more receptive to your journey and/or who has experience with bariatrics. In the beginning of my journey, my PCP was NOT on board. I've brought him much documentation and had several conversations with him about it over my 1.5 year prior to seriously considering the surgery. Once I had opened that door, and finally decided, I asked him straight up if he was on board with helping me throughout this journey, and in my care after surgery. He said yes, and ended up signing the papers. I will note that he is an older gentleman, and is a little 'old school' in his medicinal practices. Which is ok by me! I just had to show him that I'd done my homework and tried my best. Hope that helps and good luck in your appt. -
Two blog entries in 1 day...dang I am on a role
cerenatee commented on smjuroska's blog entry in smjuroska's Blog
I hate saying "studies have shown." If you google "bariatric surgery sexual abuse" or "bariatric surgery drug addiction" or "bariatric surgery alcohol adidiction" you'll get links to research study abstracts that go into detail the latest findings. -
That is so awesome about your Hep C! I have a friend here in OKC who had Hep C, but none of the drugs worked to cure her. She ended up with a liver transplant last year, and this year started the latest treatment out, and 4 months later was cleared of all Hep C! Hang in there till Thursday, I bet your bariatric counselor will have a ton of news for you then

Hi everyone, I was a low BMI bandster. I had good weight loss success with my band, but it has been a journey. Fills, unfills, episodes of being so tight I had to have an immediate unfill, etc. About 6 months ago I started having symptoms associated with a slip and the upper GI tests I've had done definitely show a slip. My choices are: remove lap band (which is not what I want to do), reposition lap band, or revise to a sleeve or bypass. I work for one of the largest health care providers in the St. Louis area and my insurance will cover a revision, but only with a provider in their network. Guess how many bariatric providers there are in the network? 2! One is the surgeon who did my lap band and he only does lap band. The other surgeon is currently not doing revisions and won't be for potentially another year. I could go to another surgeon and do self-pay, but that seems crazy to go through that again. I was self pay for my lap band surgery because my BMI was not high enough and I just recently paid all those bills off. I am also leery of the sleeve surgery because it is so permanent. Lap bands can always come out. I feel like the decision is being made for me. I prayed for assistance making this decision and all arrows are pointing me this way. Has anyone had success after a lap band slip, then reposition? I am worried about it happening again in another three years.

Unless you have complications there is no reason you *need* to follow up with a bariatric surgeon. I don't know anyone who had surgery in Mexico who does. The standard advice I have seen is to see your PCP at 2 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-op. Have your regular blood and urine tests as well as vitamin and mineral levels checked. Weight and blood pressure checked and recorded. The lab work, without insurance, is what may kill you cost-wise. You may need to do some serious shopping around for that, but it's important. As far as food goes, I'm not much help as I tend to focus on eating for nutrition rather than to stave off boredom. I really don't care if I eat the same things over and over again, so I don't ever really think about "new ideas" for food. That said, here's mostly what I ate during weight loss phase: breakfast: chicken or beef roll-ups in romaine lettuce (with pickle relish, hot mustard, etc.) lunch: chopped chicken breast with green veggies and a little light salad dressing dinner: poached egg on refried beans, tuna salad bake, lamb chops, steamed curried scallops, steamed cayenne pepper shrimp, chicken breast baked in yogurt, turkey-spinach-goat cheese burger patty, sardines in mustard. Good luck!

Regarding the "sagging" skin.... The amount of excess skin after weight loss has to do with several things: 1. The amount of weight lost (greater than 100 pounds is considered "massive weight loss" by the bariatric community) 2. The time over which the weight is lost (from a physiologic standpoint, massive weight loss over the course of 1-2 years is considered "rapid".) 3. Your skin quality (In general, older skin that has been subjected to multiple weight fluctuations is most likely to "sag") 4. The type of bariatric procedure you have (this is related to the amount of weight lost and the speed of weight loss) So, yes, it is true that people who undergo gastric banding tend to have less "sagging" than compared to other bariatric procedures. This is likely due to a combination of slower weight loss, less overall weight loss, and a better nutritional state during the weight loss which leads to better skin quality. Good luck and congratulations on your first step in the weight loss process.

I was originally 4/21 but a project that I was working on at work got postponed from 4/1 to June... So I quick called the surgeons office to see if they could move me up and (yay) they could. My docs pre-surgery diet ended up being super simple. He's not real strict about pre-surgery diets other than to cut out the caffeine and sodas (cut out sodas 2 years ago) and not go hog wild this week on the food. He said be sensible. Nothing but clear liquids next weekend. Have to do the "cleanse" over the weekend too (oh boy!). It is going to be so hard to focus at work this week. I'm like nesting...cleaning my house, throwng out and giving away the contents of my fridge, freezer and cabinets so there is nothing in there but bariatric friendly stuff. Making lists and trying out Protein drink concotions in the little blender. I keep arranging and rearranging my protein drinks, Vitamins and supplies an the table. LOL Can you tell I'm just a little excited?

Any northern cali kaiser members?
lsereno replied to jmonique78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got my surgery there two years ago. Dr. Hahn. When I had my surgery you had to have a BMI of 40 or higher to get referred to the program. They have their booklet online: http://mydoctor.kaiserpermanente.org/ncal/facilities/region/gsaa/area_master/departments/Bariatrics/binder.jsp Lynda -
Hi everyone! Have any of you scheduled your surgery with the Tijuana Bariatric Group in Mexico? I went through "BeLite" and am having trouble getting them to respond to my calls, even though I am scheduled for Sept. 20th. I'm uneasy.:help:

I probably have not been reading a lot of the same posts, but I never felt those I read by people banded in Mexico were trying to promote having surgery done there. I am fortunate to have my surgery covered by insurance, but if I was self-pay, I would seriously consider having it done in Mexico. Mexico has been doing Lap Band surgery longer than the US, and many US bariatric surgeons have been trained on lap band by Mexican surgeons. A think post operative care & programs are an import part of the weight loss process, so I definately would opt to have surgery done close to home. But if cost was an issue, I wouldn't hesitate to have it done in a foreign doctor, by a surgeon and facility that has been checked out.

Spicy food after month and a half of gastric bypass
Old Salt replied to WallyAlvarez's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I would check with your Bariatric team, but, I've been eating Kimichi since my 6 week's mark. I like mine with rice but passed on that and went to some really good kimichi soup with veggies. Suggest trying a little at first to see if your new stomach agrees with your taste bud's desire. -
Stall, hair loss and other changes (warning, TMI)

Thanks so much for the info! I've never heard of Built Bars, but will look into them. I have a bunch of Premier Protein shakes onhand, but was told they're off-limits as they're not on the "recommended" list for my specific bariatric program. Sucks because they are 30g of protein and I figure it's better than nothing. I follow the protein first rule as well, but as I mentioned, I can only eat so much of it before I'm full/very uncomfortable. BTW....glad I'm not the only one who can't stand Unjury! LOL! I keep getting told by my dietician and doctor that it's not that bad...YES, it is! LOL!!! -
Hello Everyone! I attended an informational session back in March, but then found out that my company had an exclusion for bariatric surgery. However, my husband's insurance does not, so I've been waiting until open enrollment in November so that I can join his insurance and be covered. As that time approaches, I'm starting to do more research and read other people's stories, which is what led me here! I'm 30, no kids, live in Atlanta and I work for a national non-profit health organization. Needless to say, at just over 300 lbs, I'm the biggest one here and I feel terribly out of place with all my super health conscious co-workers. Over the past three years, my husband has lost 210 pounds without having any surgery. I tried to do it his way, but I just haven't been able to stick with it. I've lost and gained back the same 30 pounds probably 10 times. I love fashion and design, so my goal is to be able to shop at trendy stores, not at plus-size stores and to be more comfortable, both physically and socially.

Any ladies out there have PCOS put your hands up!
tinkerbel replied to Red_lips_and_confidence's topic in The Gals' Room
I also have PCOS - quite mild but I've been on the pill since I was 16 for that reason as well as not wanting to get pregnant. I'm hoping VSG will reverse it. My endo has just asked me to switch to Minera IUD from the pill because of the increased fertility caused by bariatric surgery and her concern that the pill might not be absorbed perfectly (despite it not being a malabsortive procedure) . I understand it will be painful and I'm terrified for my appt. next week. -

Can I still have my VSG if I’m on my period?

Thank you SusieQ2019, I hope my experience gors as smoothly as yours. Also, thank you for the pad reminders! Best of luck on your bariatric journey! 😁 -
I was directed towards bariatric surgery by my Heart Failure Specialist, as a means to drop weight and improve eligibility for transplant (which in my case is definitely in my future). Over the past 10 years I have had 2 heart attacks, 11 stents, a pacemaker/defibulator, and several caths. Though I do not think a cardiologist would deny your surgery (for the obvious benefits), I would not think that the surgery would be something that he would rush into clearing prior to establishing that you could handle the surgery and recovery first (which could take some time). I wish the best for you and hope the clearance comes in a timely manner. I will be finishing up my pre-op requirements at the end of March and hope to have surgery soon after.

Agree with posts, and actually we all have a food addiction. Addiction is something hard for any person to face no matter what the drug of chose and all of our drug happened to be food. You are correct in saying that bariatric surgery will not fix the addiction thinking of any of us, only we have the power to change our behavior and we need help to do that. You do need to seek professional help with your addiction, the band will work but you have to make it work, it is just a tool and it will allow you to eat what ever you chose to put in your body. The only person who can help you develop positive coping skills is a professional and shame on your doctor for not suggesting this unless he already has. I am sorry there is no magic answer or pill we can take for our addiction because if there was I am sure all of us would be taking it. Good luck to you, I know it took courage to ask for help, this is a positive step in the right direction.

Makes you scratch your head...Bariatric centers with tables that can't hold more than 400 pounds? How about johnnys that are not big enough, regular hospital beds that aren't big enough, wheelchairs, regular chairs etc. I've seen it happen and the Johnny thing happened to me. I loved the Bariatric Center I was in but, the wing was new so they didn't have all the supplies they needed yet. You bet your uncovered bottom, on my survey at the surgeons I told them they needed to get items for us bigger folks so we can feel comfortable and walk around like required, with dignity instead of cold butts lol. (Thank goodness a friend who had the surgery a week earlier warned me to bring my own bathrobe ) I can't blame you for being upset at all! I wish you the best in finding a center closer to you

My doctor put me on Bariatric Advantage.meal replacement shakes. I ordered the vanilla. They were fine, but I was unable to stomach it after surgery. Just to sweet and thick. I now drink unflavored protein powder in fat free milk. I love it and don't even want any flavors added to it. Boy, how my taste buds have changed.
