  1. Hi Friends, I'm 8 months post RNY. SW 308 lbs, CW 213 lbs. Height 159 cm. I was on a steady losing path until Jan this year due to my walking (10k) daily. However, we had a bad family fight in Jan which has led to me being depressed and lethargic. I've kinda stalled since then and there has been zero progress. I'm scared I'm throwing all this away and fearful since I'm overeating and not losing. Any advice on how to kickstart my weight loss again please. My goal weight is 150 lbs and I really want to do this for my kids. Please help me

My favorite smoothie is banana and nut butter but it’s too many calories to fit in my weight loss phase. That’s healthy calories if you use nut butter with no sugar or salt added.

Now thinking if canceling surgery 🥺

Don't over think it, This fear (GERD) drove me to have a melt down right before surgery and to be highly anxious for weeks after surgery. I had reflux before surgery for many years and had been on 20-40 mg of Nexium daily for about 15 years and as my weight got higher so did the occurrence of my reflux to the point of along with the Nexium I was going through a bottle of Gaviscon a week. fast forward 8 months post op I still take 20 mg Nexium daily but only because I am to scared to tapper off as I remember the rebound reflux from prior to surgery when I would try to come off them and I have to be honest I suck a Gaviscon dual tablet if I get the slightest inkling of reflux which I think half the time is in my head lol. So prior to surgery I told my surgeon reflux was my biggest fear as I didn't want a bypass either and I certainly didn't want to have to have a second surgery, He said the weight loss would reduce the reflux and I think he is right. its just my own fears and thinking about it and sometimes eating the wrong things or too much that causes me get reflux now and its pretty mild. Now I am going to say this and I don't mean any offence to anyone as it is just what I have observed, a lot people who have had revision surgery due to GERD/reflux also seem to have had a substantial weight gain too, now if anyone out there has experienced different I stand corrected but that's what I have noticed. So that is a pretty good incentive for me not to regain. Talk to your surgeon though as he/she is the best to advise you we can only share our experiences

    Pre & Post Workout Meals

I remember watching a documentary on obesity (can’t remember its name) & a doctor pointing out that obese people have been weight training 7 days a week for years as they carried around their weight. I was rather surprised but it makes sense when you think about it. The difference is when you do weights at a gym you use different muscle. Plus as you lose weight, your posture improves as your centre of balance changes so you may have to retrain muscles, tendons, etc, too. But in answer to your question: protein. Your body uses protein for recovery & healing, and muscle & bone health & growth. There’s some information about now saying that your body can’t absorb more than 25g of protein at a time & excess is stored as fat. Something to take into consideration. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

My sleeve is so unpredictable. I’ll have days where I swear I can eat like a “normal” person and I honestly forget I’m sleeved. Then I’ll have days where a boiled egg fills me up for hours and I have zero interest in eating. What’s even weirder is that my husband- who has NOT had any bari surgery- eats a lot like me and sometimes he runs into restriction. Tonite we had date night and went to one of our favorite pubs. We split a chicken sandwich with fries, each had 1 cocktail and 1 beer. We didn’t even manage to finish half of our halves of the sandwich and also failed to drink over half our beers! We laughed that we were failing so bad at splurging. One thing that is kind of alarming me is that my acid reflux seems to be kicked in overdrive lately. I’m about to really clean up my eating and drinking prepping for this next foot surgery, so I’m hoping to catch a break from the constant heartburn. I really, really, really am happy with where I am and the LAST thing I want is a revision due to this reflux. I love my sleeve— I don’t want a pouch. I don’t have the best tips to remember to drink water bc I guzzle down 2/3 of my daily water before I eat for the first time of the day. I’ll literally have around 60 ounces of water between waking up and eating around 10-11 am, then drink maybe 12-16 more the whole rest of the day. It tends to leave me feeling somewhat dehydrated by bedtime, but bedtime is when I will “treat” myself to my Coke Zero. My hair never really came back. It’s still fairly thin, but I will never regret having the VGS. Good God, I hope the kidney stone thing never happens to me: I’m a wimp when it comes to stuff like that.

    Where’s the weight loss??

IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT MATHEMATICALLY MAKE SENSE! I have only been in the July 2021 Gastric Sleeve Thread. I just happened to see this. I am 56, 55 at the time of surgery and my highest weight was 196. To be honest, it was 196 because I binged before the surgery knowing life would change. It's been 7 months now. I have lost 20 pounds. I'm thinking, "there is no way! I'm eating about an eighth of what I used to eat and all I've lost is 20 pounds!" First of all --this was a relief and proof to me that after all these years no amount of dieting or exercising was going to help if even gastric bypass can only give me a 20 pound loss! No, I'm not eating sweets. I've lost my appetite for anything sweet. I absolutely cannot drink anything carbonated, so I drink water and tea sweetened with stevia. I've had enough protein shakes to last me a lifetime. I can only eat about 4 or 5 bites at any meal. So what am I doing wrong? And get this.......the dr put me on Adipex! All I know is, I'm 16 pounds away from my goal. I have no idea if I will get there. The dr called year 1 the "honeymoon" and basically stated that if I'm going to lose, it will be done within year one. He said he doesn't usually see a loss in year two. So, I've got 5 months to lose 16 pounds. If you are thinking you are the only one with this issue --you are not.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

So good to hear about the success. Overall I am good, but I cannot say my diet is the healthiest. I find eating carbs to be way too easy to digest and my sedentary life style working home all day in front of a computer doesn't help. I am depressed that it seems way too easy to eat more food now, such as whole (store-bought) burrito in one sitting, or two pieces of pizza instead of just one, or a fairly large salad. My little egg-sized stomach has definitely stretched. 😞 I also starting drinking Diet Coke in the morning. For three years I didn't touch it, but recently I starting drinking the mini Cokes--only one in the morning--and was surprised there were no repercussions, so that is my indulgence when I start my work day. Unfortunately, the Girl Scout cookies also seem to be digesting all too well. I did undergo a panniculectomy and a breast reduction and feel so much better since I did that. The relentless neck pain from carrying the weight of the breasts and the back ache from the stomach skin pretty much disappeared. My arms and thighs are still scary large and saggy but I just don't think I have the bravery to do another plastic surgery. It was rough! One very upsetting side effect (other than I still have thinning hair) are that I have had four kidney stones since last May. Dr. Google confirmed that there is a correlation between gastric bypass and an increase in kidney stones. They are crippling, and from what I understand, an intake of animal protein is partly to blame. I absolutely need to consciously drink more water so would LOVE to hear y'all's tips and tricks for remembering to drink water!

I'm doing the same thing - I'm calling it my 'food bucket list' -- favorite foods, favorite restaurants. Here is CIGNA's criteria: Adults Bariatric surgery for the treatment of morbid obesity in an adult (age ≥ 18 years) using a covered procedure outlined below is considered medically necessary when ALL of the following criteria are met: • EITHER of the following:  BMI (Body Mass Index) ≥ 40 kg/m2 (BMI ≥ 37.5 kg/m2 in Asians- when ethnicity is confirmed by provider attestation)  BMI (Body Mass Index) 35–39.9 kg/m2 (BMI 32.5–37.4 kg/m2 in Asians- when ethnicity is confirmed by provider attestation) with at least one clinically significant obesity-related comorbidity, including but not limited to the following: mechanical arthropathy in a weight-bearing joint (symptomatic degenerative joint disease in a weight bearing joint) diabetes mellitus o poorly controlled hypertension (systolic blood pressure at least 140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure 90 mm Hg or greater, despite optimal medical management) hyperlipidemia coronary artery disease lower extremity lymphatic or venous obstruction obstructive sleep apnea pulmonary hypertension evidence of fatty liver disease (i.e., nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [NAFLD] or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis [NASH]) gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) refractory to medical therapy • A thorough multidisciplinary evaluation within the previous 12 months which includes ALL of the following:  a description of the proposed procedure(s)  documentation of failure of weight loss by medical management  unequivocal clearance for bariatric surgery by a mental health provider  a nutritional evaluation by a physician, physician assistant, nurse practitioner or registered dietician I meet the 40 BMI and at least 3 of the criteria for the lower BMI. Initially I was extremely confident I would be approved, but even with reaching all their milestones, I don't trust them.
  9. I think it's a personal decision as to which one you care about most, but it's your decision, not that of your doctor. Perhaps you'd want to start with a lower dose and monitor things. Perhaps if you continue to lose weight, but more slowly, that will be acceptable to you. Perhaps you'd like to start with the talk therapy only and see how that goes. Maybe relay these concerns to your doctor - ask if there are other medications that may work better with weight loss or perhaps the Zoloft can be paired with an appetite suppressant. Definitely I think there should be a back and forth with your doctor to reach something satisfactory on both sides.
  10. 18 years ago, I had a RNY. I lost 124 lbs. I kept most of it off until the last 3 years when I gained about 45 pounds. I have been successful in losing weight that additional weight and am back with 5 pounds of my lowest weight! I did not have plastic surgery 18 years ago and it's my biggest regret. Now that I am stable in weight, I'm looking at plastic surgery. I've talked to 2 Docs. And I'm confused and torn. Doc#1 says Fleur. He says that I don't have much back skin/fat. He can pull the skin forward and tighten it. I have a pronounced belly that hangs quite low and I get heat rashes/yeast infections frequently. Doc#1 says that Fleur should be a great solution. He said it will also take care of my sagging mons. (Which I really want gone!) He will also tighten my abs after nearly 50 years of weight gain and loss. Doc#2 says to do a panniculectomy and lipo around the sides. She feels this is the best option as my frame is not necessarily curvy and she could not be sure of getting a flatter tummy. Let's assume, this is all out of pocket cost. I like both Docs. Which would you choose and why? I could use some insight and advice! Thanks
  11. Hi everyone, I'm 7 months out of RNY (Aug 23, 2021) and my weight loss has been great (down 82lbs). I have been struggling my entire life with anxiety and as I get healthier I have been more motivated to deal with my mental health issues as well. I had a conversation with my primary care dr. this morning and she is prescribing 25mg of Zoloft and talk therapy. My question is - have you been on or started Zoloft after RNY? My main concern is weight gain. I am soooo nervous about taking this medication and losing the results I have worked so hard for the last year. I'm also concerned about it slowing my weight loss. I am 100% going forward with the talk therapy and honestly feel I could use the help of a medication, but am so nervous about trying it and then gaining. Thanks all!

    Negative comments from family members

Trigger Warning: ..............................Yes. My dad is a food pusher. We have a very strained relationship now but growing up he would make 3 different dinners at once and have me eat a bit of all of it and then call me fat and bully me. He use to buy packs and packs of ramen noodles and hide them in my things like my desk/book bag/purse as I started becoming overweight as a child. I still can't eat ramen to this day because it brings me back to those moments. Hed tell me how ugly and fat I was but then push huge amounts of food on me. He's from a country where food is unstable and grew up incredibly poor so when he came to the US and saw how abundant food was he constantly buys food and cooks. He's a big reason why I had a bad relationship to food for so long/why im still working through it and why I still have self esteem issues. He's thin and in shape but has a serious problem with alcohol. I didn't tell him about my surgery because a) he wouldn't understand given a language barrier and he's treated me horribly over the years because I'm fat and the last thing I want is to hear those words but about my surgery. He's picked up on the fact that I had a weight loss procedure done. He tries to mend our relationship but still offers food because he doesn't know how else to show love. He offers me healthy stuff now but I simply just decline because I'm not ready to explain anything to him or become closer. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Mad at myself

Sorry to hear of your loss and challenges. We all deal with stress differently, so the thought of seeking assistance with that is good advice. I will say from the weight perspective, I was six years out from my sleeve and had gained back about 45 pounds. I found that what worked for me was to go on a 'time restricted feeding' schedule, and to eat a diet that was generally keto when I did eat. I skipped breakfast and only ate from Noon to 6pm. For those two meals I would have a serving of protein, and a green vegetable or salad. I was able to drop about 20 pounds in a couple of months. I stopped because my hiatal hernia had worsened enough that it had to be fixed with revision to bypass, but the diet program was working well. There is a nutrition doctor named Dr. Jason Fung who develops programs for insulin control diets, which is what I based my program on. You might want to Google him and check out his information.

Chi Franciscan - Tacoma, WA thoughts?

I had the duodenal switch by Srikanth in 12/2019. By 7/2021 I was dying of malnutrition. I was taking all my vitamins and drinking my protein shakes - not the pre made ones but the ones you make yourself. I was blacking out, collapsing in parking lots, I couldn’t drive because I was blacking out while I was driving, it got so bad my husband had to bath me. I couldn’t be left alone. I had called Srikanth’s office to schedule an appointment to talk about the symptoms when they first started but was told that I needed to call my PCP so I scheduled an appointment with her. I was put on various medications because my BP was typically around 67/52, I had ear problems in addition to blacking out, collapsing, throwing up any food I could get down IF I could get food down. I eventually ended up in the ER and was admitted for a little over 2 months for malnutrition. Sometimes when you have the duodenal switch your stomach doesn’t absorb enough nutrients and your body will start shutting down. It was awful. Now I’m on TPN and have my vitamins, proteins, carbohydrates, and electrolytes pumped through my blood stream 12 hours a day. I’ve had sepsis 3 times in 2 months. I’m not saying it happens to everyone but the nurses in the hospital said they see this all the time. No one mentioned this before surgery. No one helped me after surgery. Srikanth’s office told me to go see my PCP who is not a specialist in weight loss surgery. I’m so dissatisfied with Srikanth’s office with the exception of Karli. She is wonderful but my issues came on before she started working there but now I have a resentment against there office and don’t ever want to go back. It MAY not happen to you BUT watch out for those symptoms.
  16. Oh my goodness the noises! Lol I get them too. I lost 20 in my pre op diet and then 10 after surgery. I’m not losing super fast after surgery since I’m not eating enough protein. I’m adding it all together though as my total loss to keep me staying positive. Congratulations on your 20 lbs loss!

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

I had mine on Feb 14th so I'm 5 weeks and 3 days out. I felt pretty good about fluids and protein until like 2 weeks ago drinking water and feeling pain/restriction, especially when it's room temp. Using a straw and having ice water seems to help me get it down better. I actually gulp in a lot of air when I don't use a straw. Most teams tell you not to, even mine but I feel gas pain in my chest without the straw. I'm doing really well with protein though and get 70-80 grams a day through about 700-800 calories. Rarely do I get to 800 cals though. I noticed on days when I have eaten up to 800 cals I feel nauseated at night so I try to not go over 750. It's a small difference but weird enough I can really feel it. I eat 3 small meals a day, one snack and a protein shake. My dietician has me eat 2 oz of protein every 2 hours during the daytime. I'm taking vitamins well, no hair loss...yet? I do need to take nausea medicine in the morning because maybe 4 times a week I wake up with the instinct to dry heave. I don't know why but I've always felt nauseous in the mornings, even pre op. I find that I can either focus on food or water but not both. When I drink 64 oz of fluids, I eat less and miss my protein goal. When I reach my protein goal, I drink less fluids. I find that balance to be really difficult to deal with and get right. I wonder when that'll be easier? It's also tough with the 2-hour eating rule and then the 10 min before 30 after drinking rule. I'd basically always have to have food or fluid in my mouth all day which isn't realistic for me. I've lost 29 lbs in 5 weeks. I don't really feel it yet/still feel like a big out-of-shape lump LOL. I think I'll feel the weight loss when I hit the 240's. I have my one-month post-op tomorrow with my nurse practitioner. Looking forward to it. P.S. Is anyone still dealing with constipation and ROCK HARD stool? I am on prune juice, Metamucil, colace and occasional senna tea. I go almost every day but it's incredibly forced, usually bleeding occurs or I need to slap on a pair of gloves and take it out (I know TMI I'm sorry ) . I'm going to talk to my team about it tomorrow but I'm so done with it. It also causes me a great deal of nausea. Wondering if anyone else is dealing with this and what you're doing to make it better?
  18. Like others have said, just don't make a habit out of it. Part of the reason I had this surgery is because I don't want to continue the lifetime of diets and guilt with eating. I want to lose the weight and just have a healthy relationship with food, that includes the occasional candy bar. Beating yourself up or being overly restrictive may lead to more binges. Just accept it happened and move on. If you find yourself desperate for candy try to find an alternative option or go for a mini size. But this first year is your fast lane for weight loss and you should try to maximize that as much as possible. I was on Protonix for 2 months post op and still have it for as needed. I was never prescribed the other med you mentioned.

    February 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello! I had surgery on 2/22 and had major complications afterwards. I was in the hospital for 13 days out of the last month. I, too, had a hard time getting protein and fluids down and my weight loss has also stalled at 16 lbs. My doctor ordered thrice-weekly fluid and vitamin infusions for me. Perhaps you can ask your doctor about that.
  20. Exercise = chewing haha, never heard that one before. Congratulations on your weight loss. Thanks for the inspiration. I needed a boost today and you did it

    Food stuck...foamies-ish

Yeah the band was a NIGHTMARE. I can't believe I lived with GERD for years because I was afraid to have it removed, afraid I'd gain weight. I haven't, but I'm so ready for RNY so I can resume weight loss.

    food addict I'm not sure

I guess I'm just confused about your replies. You stated you have no mental issues, but on another thread I read your reply about having bipolar disorder. It's kind of difficult to reply to you when on one thread you admit to a condition, then on another thread you deny having mental issues. We're all here to support each other and discuss the topics surrounding weight loss surgeries. We all want to see each other be successful with weight loss, but it's hard to give support when there's hostility and denial in these threads. We have to be 100% completely honest with ourselves or else we won't be successful. I agree with other posters that have suggested counseling that encompasses not only bipolar/mood issues but also any possible issues with food. It's the best way to ensure that your weight loss surgery is successful. Weight loss surgery is a surgery on your stomach, not your brain. It will not fix any issues going on mentally. Best wishes to you.
  23. Yesterday was my one year surgiversary. Weight loss surgery was an amazing decision and my only regret is not doing it sooner. At one year, I’ve lost 47% of my body weight going from a size 18-20 (2x) to a size 4-6 (small). I feel better. I can walk around and do normal tasks without being exhausted. My acid reflux has improved, no more knee pain, no more incontinence… I feel great. I have excess skin I’m considering having removed, but it sure beats all the fat. I’m down to my goal weight and praying I’m able to maintain it for the long run! Losing 106 pounds (226 to 120) was not easy and I’m scared of gaining it back. My goal now is to increase my exercise to more than just chewing (haha). Shopping for “regular” size clothes and having them fit is so much fun. I love being able to cross my legs. I don’t need the X-Large blood pressure cuff at the doctor. I don’t think I’ll ever be comfortable in a bathing suit, but I’m ok in my everyday clothes. I no longer dread having my picture taken. My BMI went from 42 (morbidly obese) to 22 (normal). My husband and son tell me they’re proud of me. Most importantly, I’m proud of myself. I was scared to have weight loss surgery, but fortunately it has turned out way better than I ever could of hoped for. I’d love to hear other peoples’ successes and hope my story inspires others considering weight loss surgery just as the stories other folks shared inspired me. HAPPY SURGIVERSARY!

    psych eval

Psychologists test us to make sure we're mentally prepared to handle bariatric surgery emotionally and mentally. That's not necessary for hip surgery. Psych evaluations are tools that our surgeons use to identify those who may need counseling to work on an issue beforehand so that their weight loss surgeries are successful. It's a good thing! We all want to be successful with our surgeries, right?

Some key points about Binge Eating Disorder: A disorder involving frequent consumption of large amounts of food, and uncontrollable eating.
