    Non-NSAIDs Pain Relievers

I was taking a prescription NSAID (Feldene) consistently before my sleeve surgery, for osteoarthritis pain in several joints and in my lower back. I stopped it before surgery, per surgeon's orders, and took Tylenol or, rarely, prescription narcotics when I had to have something. Immediately after the surgery I was delighted to find that my aches and pains were GONE. I don't know why (maybe endorphins?), but that low-to-moderate level nagging pain in my joints and lower back was no there. That lasted several months. When the aches gradually returned, they were at first less bothersome than pre-op, which I attributed to weight loss. Now, at 7 mos out, they're back to pre-surgery intensity but they're more episodic instead of constant. My surgeon said I can take my Feldene now, but only intermittently. When the aches get to me I take it for a couple of weeks, then stop for at least a few weeks. He said to wait until I'm at least a full year post op before I take it consistently again. The benefits of this particular NSAID are that I only have to take it once a day, and there are at least two strengths: 10 mg and 20 mg. Celebrex would be another good choice. Please note that anytime that anyone (WLS or no) takes an NSAID they should always always always take it with food.
  2. Oh my, I have been heartbroken over not taking my Advil. I stop one month ago. It has not been fun, I bought the pain patch wraps from my ankle that has severe osteo arthritis from and accident 10 yrs ago. I also ice it and putting off the inevitable of seeing ortho doc and getting a cortisone shot for the pain. I can barely walk without my advil I thought at some point u can take Advil (any NSAIDs) after ur healed and u can tolerate it. I thought someone said only Bypass pts can't take Advil after but we can...anyone know for sure??

    Any illinois sleevers

I had surgery 10/24…and I'm doing great. I might have some Protein samples to get to you, the closer you get to your surgery. We can message about that if you would like. Is the consultation in January your first step?

    Snacking....

I am not struggling with eating out of boredom YET, but I understand exactly what you are going through as I have done this my entire life. Planned snacks are great, and the nuts or jerky can fit into that plan. The key is having the mindset that the snack is fueling your body instead of just doing it because you are bored. I smoked cigarettes for 10 years. When I quit 10 years ago, I realized that "triggers" as they call it, were real. I mentally and unconsciously had a cigarette whenever a trigger was present. That trigger might be getting in the truck to drive. It might be the end of a meal. The point is that if you are snacking when you are bored, you are continuing the bad habit that got you into trouble in the first place. I think this is a big problem for most of us. We have to use this time to change that if we are to continue being successful. I work at a computer all day. I got my job to purchase a Veridesk for me, so that I can stand up and work. It does help. It takes me out of my comfort zone of sitting, and the cravings dissipate. I also burn more calories standing than sitting. Mind you, I don't do this all day. Just periodically. Maybe you can take a break and walk around the office for a minute or two whenever you get that craving. You are doing really well, and I have no doubt that you will continue to be successful. Mindless snacking might just be the thing that hinders you from meeting or exceeding your goal weight as the weight loss will undoubtedly slow down in the coming weeks and months. Anyway, good luck and thanks for bringing this up. This is a topic that is a real problem for most of us.

    Psychologist Appointment

Today was my appt with the psych on March 13, 2009. It went pretty smoothly I talked to the Dr for about 40 min. about my childhood, education level and my weight loss attempts. When I was leaving her office she said that I was approved, (I don't think she was suppose to tell me that; she had not given me the computer tests yet). I had to do 4 test on the computer and boy did it take long. I was there from 10:15 am to 2pm. When I got home finally I was so tired I had to lay down for a couple of hours. That test drained me. Well next week will be my physical from my regular doctor and my nutritional consult. Hope everyone is doing well. BTW I started a required Exercise Program and boy is it kicking my bunns. TTYL
  7. During surgery they put a tube down your throat. This is what is probably causing this feeling. I had it after my surgery and it was so annoying. I would wake up in the middle of the night from it, would lose my voice because of it during class while teaching etc. I called my doc and went to see him right away because it was freaking me out. He explained it was common and happens because of the tube. Here is my experience http://alienbanditinkorea.wordpress.com/2009/10/24/week-two-post-op/

How soon post-op can I start exercising?

I GOT MY SURG DATE!!!! It is Aug.6, 2009. My surgeons office will call me with the time. Since I have already lost 19 pounds he told me to continue doing what I am doing and for now. I am surg ready. That was good news! How about that Donna, I too am a RN (retired). However this surg is about me so I am like a baby in the woods and I'm not a good-caregiver for myself. I took care of my Mom until she died 2 yrs ago and now my youngest sister is ill and I'm her primary care giver as well. I just wish I were a better care giver for myself. I posted a tread about a month ago about how I hated exercise and asked if it were mandatory for weight loss with the band and after hearing almost everyone say a resounding, YES!! I decided to start walking and found that I like it. I do sweat a bit but somehow I don't mind it much. I'm getting more excited by the day! Thx everyone!
  9. Hi all! I was banded on 10/16. Things went well according to the doctor, but I can not get rid of the gas pain. I even spent an extra night in the hospital because of it. I am taking 4 "gas-x" pills a day to little or no help. My left shoulder feels like it was surgecially removed and sown back on. The worst part is the pain travels to my left ear and it feels like it will explode. Any advice? I also feel like I have been starving since a week after the surgery. I hate sugar free Jello so my diet is water/protein drink/and broth. Is it normal to feel like you are starving? Thanks All- Palangi

    Gas pain outta control!!!

Hang in there...it gets better i promise...i had the knifing pains of gas for 10 days post op..and still sometimes have a few shooting pains in my shoulder STILL. I was banded on the 23rd. pepto might make you more constipaded...all i did was walk wallk and take my pain meds when i got unbearable. Get lots of rest and drink plenty of water. good luck!!
  11. Hi everyone! I'm about a month and a half out from surgery. I had a DS on 12/14/16 with a SW of 260. I'm currently sitting at 228. So, generally I feel like I've been successful thus far with my weight loss. However, sometimes I feel like it's very slow. I stalled for about 10 days, and am slowly climbing out of the hole. I find that I'm having a very hard time controlling cravings (particularly for sugar...) also find that I'm hungry really often some days, and not hungry at all on others. Does anyone have tips for craving control? Why am I so hungry sometimes, and not others? I expected to never be hungry, but I definitely am.

    sick of not loosing

I was sleeved 10/2. I was 230 at high weight, 222 day of surgery. I'm "only" down to 194 today. I've stalled 3 times, for 12+ days each time. I'd kill to have lost as much as you did. And btw, I stick to the plan very tightly. Don't compare yourself to people who have different amounts to lose, who are younger, who are male, etc. you're doing just fine as long as you're following your plan.

    Question

$300 fee is nothing. Drs do have costs associated with submitting your case to insurance company. People like me, who required 3 full submissions and 2 peer to peer appointments cost more than easier patients/insurance companies so the fees balance out. My first surgeon had a $2500 "lifestyle management fee" that had to be paid in advance of the surgery being scheduled. And that was on top of all the other costs that insurance was covering 100%. Supposedly that was to cover support groups/classes and the doctor coming out to visit you in cases of extreme need, but considering we lived 50 miles away and the support programs were all during business hours we would never have used any. Plus, if we coukd afford $5000 we wouldnt be on medical. The surgeon also refused to work with us on the fee. The surgeon who did my sleeve (and who i recommend if in CA) is Dr. Richard Nguyen of Lifetime Surgical. He charges $300 and i didnt find out until after I paid it that that fee also includes the bariatric diet food for the 2 weeks preop. That makes the portion that goes to them more like $150-200. I find that very reasonable for all they did. HW 385 SW 359 CW 344 Sleeved 10/5/16

Another menstrual question, after surgery did your flow pick up ALOT? I used to bleed for maybe a full day and half of a night. Not even enough for 3 tampons, and now it's constant and very bright in color, should I be concerned? 15. Three years ago this time I was in the operating room and my friendship with Leonida, my band, was starting. During the first year I lost 52 kilos, which is something between 100 and 110 lbs, if I am not wrong.. During the second year I started losing part of my strong motivation and,by the end of the second year and the beginning of the third, I had gained back 10 kilos. Bariatric Pal is helping me come back on track, your approach to weight loss connected to wls is a bit different and many of the suggestions I have read here are becoming part of my life and behaviour. Thanks to all of you!!!

    Question

It depends on your insurance. My policy has an in-network out of pocket maximum of $2000 per year. By the time the surgery came around (September 28), I had already spent $600 over the previous almost 10 months in co-pays and a couple of other items that my PCP asked me to do (abdominal ultrasound, chest x-ray, etc.). So, I had to pay about $1400 for everything. (The hospital submitted their claim to insurance first, so that money went to them. Insurance covered everything else at 100%.) My doctor didn't have any "doctor fees." My parents had bariatric surgery over the past few years in Alabama, and their surgeon charged a $300 administrative fee per patient. I personally think that is kind of dirty, but apparently a lot of them do it.
  18. I have been re-admitted back in the hospital last Friday due to complications. Soooo after I had been on an IV most of the week I thought for sure I lost 10+ pounds. Got on the scale and gained 3-4 pounds Wth???
  19. Brian, thanks for the offer but I must confess that I actually like many of the products. But you don't need to be out $300. If you ordered within the last 30 days you can get a full refund on up to 10 boxes as long as not more than one packet has been used in the box. If it's more than 30 days, sell it all on ebay! I did that once. You usually get back at least half your money selling it on ebay.
  20. So glad I am not alone! Lost 10 Within 1st week and now nothing! No movement what so ever! SD7/18

    All liquids

Not all sleeve patients do well on this, especially when their doctors want them on clears. The person you are responding to has a post op diet of 10 days of Clear Liquids, 10 days of full liquids, and then 10 days of soft foods. BTW, Melonie... when did you have your sleeve? How much have you lost?
  22. Had my surgery at 10am yesterday and am in ghe most pain I've ever been in. Stayed last night and was up every hour needing more morphine. Was able to walk last night and this afternoon but it was very hard and started some bleeding when I coughed. Haven't drank anything but ice chips, and liquid Vicodin. Everything I drink, even the smallest about, sends my stomach into a cramp fest that hurts so bad. Can hardly sleep because pain meds do not last. Just had a dose of the liquid Vicodin a half hour ago and the pain is already back I'm terrified about going home because have no recliner or propped up bed to lay in comfortably. Plus have 2 large dogs and my bathroom is in the other side of the house. Sorry for venting but just in so much pain. Starting weight 321- sleeve date 07/10/13 Sent from my iPhone using VST

    Hiking for a search

Learning I love to hike in winter. Still searching for missing person. I've logged 36 miles plus in less than a week! I've gained 3 lbs but whatever. I'm hiking some stiff terrain and my clothing and hiking wear is adding all of 10 lbs.

    Goal weight

My doctor said he would like me to be around 170-175 by 2-3 years out. My personal goal for myself was around 190 and then go from there. I would love to be a comfortable size 10/12

    Getting stuck

Everyone is definitely different. I choose to not push the envelope (or the band in this case) and gave up all bread, rice, pasta, and basically "white food." Dry meat definitely causes me problems, but I find 9 times out of 10 it's mind over matter with me.
