  1. I also have BCBS IL and went thru the same thing. I started the process in Aug 2018 to have a revision from the rny(2012) to the DS. Got the denial letter stating I was denied because I showed no proof I had continued doctor supervision. My BMI was also under 50 but the letter made no reference to that being another reason. I actually had to send my copy of the denial letter to the doctor because the insurance was unresponsive to the request they made for their copy!! The doctors also set up a peer to peer meeting and that same day I was approved. My surgery date is set for Jan 7 2019. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

I Believe It Was Worth It

I absolutely without a doubt never thought I was going to fail. I believe in the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy. I believe you can shape your life with the thoughts you focus mostly towards. I believe when I am on mostly a positive goal oriented path, I open myself to the possibilities that will get me to those goals and unfortunately vice versa. I will not fail myself ever again. Instead, I will rework, revise, rest, refocus, regroup, reaccess and return to the path, moving foward towards whatever goals I set. My hope is for everyone to have a similar belief in their (anticipated) success!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
  3. Well I lost all my excess weight and more with my band. Kept it off easily for the first 6 years before regaining. Now I’m excited about my revision in Jan. Yes I am a little bit nervous and not looking forward to dumping but I know the benefits outweigh the negatives. I can’t wait to fit back into some of the clothes I have sitting in my wardrobe - yes there will be shopping done too but I already have heaps of cute stuff. This journey is like most others. The ride isn’t always as smooth as we hope but when we reach the destination it’s so worth it.
  4. Good Advice -I am trying to do that too🐾💕-I also have been immobile on a scooter due to leg issues - had to have revision of a prior tendon repair - I was not going to do this surgery but my Dr said I had a hiatal hernia and bad esophageal scarring and as long as that had to be repaired I should consider it and so while I was out with my leg I had the additional testing done- once we knew I did not have esophageal cancer I thought - I should do this and get myself back. I was in a very bad relationship with a man who tricked me into putting him on the deed of my coop. When I sold it he drained our shared account- as this happened- I needed hope and to do something for me. The feeling of betrayal was so horrifying- he nearly ruined me financially, physically and mentally. So when we say look forward I am so right there ready to not look back!!!

Thank you, but noooooo, you don't want to imitate me! Due to esophagus issues, I was on soft foods for 8 months! Then because of reflux I had a revision from sleeve to bypass on Halloween. It's been a long year. Hope you have a smoother journey 😁 Do you still have a lap band?
  6. It's not much of a revision. The sleeve was first done as a pre surgery for the super obese to loose enough weight to get the RNY safely. Just picture the anatomy of an RNY with part of the stomach already removed.
  7. Can someone explain how someone who has the sleeve can get revised to RNY? Don't they completely remove the part of the stomach RNYers still have? Do they make your stomach even TINIER somehow and connect your bile ducts to the new stomach? How big is the new RNY pouch after you've already had a sleeve? Yes I googled for images of this and couldn't find anything. Just curious!

Sophomoreville - A Home For The the Tweeners

Gosh darnit! I had no idea revisions don't have the same kind of restriction. In a way, that just sounds cray. Cuz you still have to make a stoma and the stoma is what you make it. Right? Some have a bigger stoma (me) and others have a little-er one...It is an open system, but all bypasses are open systems. And my RD said that the pouch doesn't really stretch, but usually the stoma is the part that stretches. I'm sorry you're having to deal with this and are disappointed. It's scary to think of the future. I totally get it. We will just have to form a club!!! Maybe our own thread (yes another one) of "Really Big Eaters" or "No Restrictions" lol or whatever. And we can help remind each other that just because we CAN eat such and such, doesn't mean we should or that its in our best interests. I'm honestly (as much as I stray) trying to remind myself of this and use IF to help me form new behaviors since I only have a few more months in the technical honeymoon period. It honestly is working. I'm much better now than I was! You will be too hon!!!! I just know it! One thing to know though...stick to your quantity and err on the small side of servings. I'm having to go back to 1/2c-1c of food again and it's difficult. LOL!

I'm a revision too and likewise I don't really have restriction. Maybe if I eat a whole lot of dry chicken at once I will feel it back up into my oesophagus and that's a little unpleasant, but otherwise nope. But what I have been feeling is pleasantly satiated after half an hour of eating good quality protein. So I have to force myself to eat the smaller quantity knowing the satisfaction *will come* its just not immediate. Its hard work but its doable. I do have dumping and squits from sugary and fatty food but it's not like one square of chocolate will have me heaving. The dumping can be linked to how much intestine they bypassed. Maybe they were conservative with you. But even without the super virgin stomach benefits, you do still have a tool at your disposal, it's just that maybe you won't have a traditional honeymoon. You may have to live like how a Vet does but be a bit strict with yourself. Think of it this way, you won't get the regain shock that first timers who had a fabulously easy honeymoon do, coz ya been there, done that! Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

Sophomoreville - A Home For The the Tweeners

I had a follow-up with the surgeon yesterday and left feeling hopeless and doomed to failure, again. He was happy to see the wide range of foods I've been able to eat since the revision to bypass, but I told him I was concerned that I didn't feel any restriction at all, even on dense proteins. He said my restriction is gone - period. That when they did the revision, the pouch just empties into the intestine, the food doesn't stay in the pouch at all. He said that its different for a bypass on a "virgin" stomach, they should have restriction, but I won't. I wish I hadn't had the revision surgery. He said, well, with the bypass, you still can't process carbs, they'll go right through you. So I had to tell him that, at least so far, I don't dump on anything, not carbs, not fats, not simple sugars. I'm screwed once my appetite comes back. My tool is gone and I'm utterly devastated.

100 lbs in under a year?

I had to do a bunch of calculations coz I think in metric, but in 66 days (9 weeks, 3 days) I've lost 30.8 pounds (probably a few more coz I haven't weighed myself for a couple of days). I'm a revision and apparently we lose slower, but I'll take it! I'm just happy to see the scales going on the right direction! Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

    Weight gain

I had revision from lapband to sleeve in March 2018. I had the band for 16 years. I lost 130lbs initially with band..kept it off until year 12 when I had learned I stretched my esophagus. My band was unfilled to let my esophagus heal and in less than 2 months, I quickly gained back 50lbs. It was devastating. I didn't go out and suddenly eat all the bad foods I couldn't. I ilterally was gaining 5lbs a day initially after literally starving myself. So after 2 years, I had an infection of the port and tubing and that was removed. I was supposed to go back in 3-4 months to have it replaced. I never did..2 years later..I developed another infection and my surgeon decided it was time to remove the band and he suggested sleeve revision.I literally had no time to research the sleeve. I was hoping to finally get this extra 50lbs off and go back to where I was. Surgery was a success..band removed, sleeve revised..I was not hungry AT ALL initially..I did slowly lose about 20lbs..Was happy to think I was only 30lbs from my lowest weight and fitting into all the old clothes I had put aside 4 years earlier.I started to regain the weight..slowly..I started doing HIIT classes (High intensity interval training) in a 21 day transformation challenge. I finished that and then wound up trading membership for marketing services. So I have been doing that for 2 months at least 4 days a week..sometimes 5. My body is definitely stronger and more toned, but I gained back just about all the 20lbs I lost shy a few lbs. And please don't say muscle weighs more than fat..it doesn't..it is just more dense and takes up less space than fat...so I know I didnt gain 20lbs of muscle. So although I feel more fit and strong, I am back up to my fat clothes...sighhh...I am more hungry than I was initially. I figure I put my body into starvation mode out of surgery and my body decided it wanted back to the old set point. I don't know! I didn't eat dramatically different. No I am not measuring everything but at minimum I should be maintaining at what I am eating and not gaining..especially since now I am working out more regularly. My body is majorly confused. I think because this was my 2nd surgery..and I didn't have a larger amount to lose.. With all the quirks of the bad..once I lost the weight I didn't have to work hard to keep it off..it stayed off all those years. This was a kick in the gut to quickly gain everything I lost a few months earlier. Not loving this sleeve at the moment...
  13. Good to hear that the revision surgery was approved. After you have an initial consultation with a lawyer you'll have more info to help you decide which legal route to take, even if that decision is to not pursue anything at all. Good luck!
  14. Wow, what a huge development. I'm so pleased you got approved for revision surgery! I'd be reluctant to go the malpractice route because I have an allergy to anything involving suing (stress, lawyers, fate in the hands of others ack!). Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. I can only reply with what my surgeon has told me, not from personal experience as I am still very much a freshman to this. Yes, my maintenance calories are 800-1000 max for the rest of my life. I am only just shy of two months and just started tracking and eat about 350-450 daily. Yes, I was told that by 18-24 months that's going to be your stable weight (with more off if you're actively exercising). My insurance considers 18 months your stable weight - that's when they OK plastic surgery. I've never heard of a pouch reset. But you can have a revision done to shrink the stomach again once you tackle your food addiction issues. I would think if you can eat again 20 minutes later, it could be stretched? It stretches out naturally over time anyways. From 2oz to about 8oz or so. It's fixable, though, with surgery again. What does your surgeon have to say about all of this, especially your long-term caloric intake? Do you have a dietitian on-staff?
  16. Also think of it this way. If you don't so something (even if it turns out you can't), what's going to happen to his next patient? I know I asked my surgeon how many of his patients failed or had major complications and needed revisions. Will he tell the truth to his next patient? I know it's not your job to look out for the next person, but we all have to live on this dirt ball together! At least until WWIII anyway 😂
  17. They also have incredible malpractice insurance for when these cases arise. Don't be a doormat. Don't turn the other cheek. You can get a lawyer as every bit as good as that doctor's. In an ideal occurrence you wouldn't even have to sue. Everything will be take care of via negations between the lawyers. Maybe you can get back any money you have to come out of pocket with for the revision. Get a good lawyer and there will be no stress on your part. Your job is to heal and get better. Your lawyer would take care of the rest.
  18. So to play Devil's advocate, why should the **hospital** pay for the surgeon's malfeasance? They are just the facility? I find it unlikely you will make headway on that front, BUT I think (not a lawyer) you can very likely get the $$$ out of original surgeon, plus damages to cover extra time off work, etc. I would definitely talk to a medical malpractice attorney, ASAP. I wonder if you can even social the insurance company on him? He had made them pay out twice? [emoji848] Congrats on your new surgeon and upcoming revision!! Get a lawyer!![emoji23][emoji1] Sent from my LG-G710 using BariatricPal mobile app
  19. I agree with LadySin! I would contact a lawyer. Because of your first surgeon’s error, you now have to go through another surgery - more time out of work (if you work) - and another while healing process. And while it’s great that you will be getting the revision surgery, I don’t think that makes up for all you have and will go through. Good luck!!!
  20. Hey guys, a few months back I posted a message talking about how rude my gastric sleeve surgeon was to me. He told me I was a failure, there was nothing else he could do for me, maybe I could get on Medifast, he didn't have to see me again, among other things. I tried to explain to him, I never had the restriction I should have had with my sleeve. He preceded to tell me, people, who don't do what they are supposed to do always find excuses. Well, well, well, guess what! He's the one who didn't do what he was supposed to do. I was able to get in with one of the best bariatric surgeons in the state and he immediately set me up for an endoscopy and barium test. Both tests came back and showed what I knew all along, he left too much stomach in. I was a little nervous because I found out that my new doctor recently got in with the group of doctors with my old surgeon. I expressed my concerns with him. I asked him could he be fair and truthful, being that this other doctor was his partner now, in a sense. He preceded to tell me his patients come first and the test doesn't lie. My other concern was how would I handle this. I knew my insurance plan didn't pay for revision surgery and I knew I couldn't pay out of pocket, but why should I when the proof was right there in black and white, that he didn't do what he was supposed to do. After I calmed down and allowed a cooler head to prevail, I spoke with my doctor about what could be done. He told me to let his office handle the insurance company, once he shows them my test results and he let them know why I need revision surgery, he believes that would get me approved for the revision surgery. The first letter came back and it was denied, but a few days later I got my approval letter! My revision surgery is January 21, 2019. I'm now in talks with the hospital, I told them I shouldn't have to pay again for something their doctor didn't do correctly. To me, this is an open and shut case of malpractice, but all I want is my surgery done correctly and to let his group know what he did. I put in a formal complaint with BC/BS and with the hospital on him. What would you guys do? Would you be happy with getting your surgery over or would you pursue a malpractice case?
  21. @Cynisca, thank you for your honest opinion. I have always been a person that dots all my i's and cross my t's. I obtained one of the best bariatric surgeons in the state. He did an endoscopy and a barium test on me. The test came back and showed what I knew in my heart all along, there was way too much stomach left. So this doctor was not only rude, he failed to do my surgery correctly. Even though I feel this is an open and shut case of malpractice, all I want is my surgery done over and for my insurance company and the big group of doctors he works with to know what he did. My insurance plan did not cover revision surgery, but through God's grace, they approved me for revision. Now I'm in talks with the hospital. I told them I shouldn't have to pay another penny out of pocket for something one of their doctors didn't do right. The doctor I'm with now recently became apart of this group of doctors with my old surgeon. I prayed about it and asked him could he be fair with me and truthful about what his colleague did or didn't do. So far I have been very pleased with him. My revision surgery is January 21, 2019.

Anyone have no issues with plain water?

In the beginning first few weeks after my revision to bypass, I was able to drink lots of plain water... but it had to be ice cold, as with all of my drinks since the surgery. You might find trying water at different temperatures, if you do run into trouble getting water down. Your taste buds may or may not change after surgery. Everyone is different.

    Questions about DS surgery

Hi all! I had a band in 2006, revision to sleeve in 2015. Now having excrutiating nausea, GERD, heartburn, etc. Had the endoscopy PH study and am having reflux episodes/vomiting every 16 minutes!! Having an upper endoscopy tomorrow to rule out Barrett's. My doc gave me three options this morning. 1. Fix hiatal hernia and hope that works, 2. Revise sleeve to by pass and hope that works, 3. Do nothing and live with it. I started at 234 pre band and have only lost 40 or so pounds and have lost and regained the weight many times over the past years. Considering taking all my records and getting a second opinion closer to home. My doc does not do a ds, so would like to hear what another surgeon may say about that. Any words of wisdom?? Thank you!

    time frame for feeling good?

First of all, do what your surgeon said. With that disclaimer out of the way, listen to your body next. No driving for a few days after being put under--standard safety. Second, no driving under narcotics, right? If you are feeling super great by day four, and the strongest meds you are taking is Tylenol, then take a short drive if it pleases you. I had my sleeve done last February and I wasn't really ready to take a drive for a week. Not because I was popping pain meds, but because I felt like a melted poop pile and that was enough to make me feel like NO driving was safer for everyone. I had a revision to a bypass the Friday before Thanksgiving due to complications from my sleeve. Went in on Friday, came home on Sunday and I was ready to go out driving on Monday! Listen to your surgeon first, then your body next. Melted poop=no driving 💩! HUGS! Feel better fast! Congrats!

    Weight gain

I agree with you, There is not a lot of information and support for people maintaining or have weight gain. Most vets disappear from the forums because it's mostly new people. It's hard to see people struggle with a major weight gain. I know this is not easy from my own experience. You may not want to hear some of this. But, I'm saying it because I care. The work does not end after goal. Don't let this gain become 100+ pounds back. Are you willing to change, work and do things that are not convenient or comfortable? Suffer the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. (1) As you progress out from sleeve surgery your restriction is less. You will be able to eat more food. (2) Stretching is rare. Very few revisions are done. You can make an appointment with your surgeon to see if you stretched your sleeve. Ask your dietician/surgeons office for help getting your diet back on track. (3) Many people confuse stretching for the the ability to eat more and grazing food throughout the day (combinations of health and unhealthy foods) Any of us can eat around our surgery. Eating more calories is causing the weight gain. (4) Pouch reset is a fancy way of saying getting back on track. Pouch reset is the old diet progression (liquid ,soft foods then real food stage) If you find this too restrictive try a different approach that is realistically sustainable for you long term. Contact your dietician or research diet options. (5) . Portion control/surgery restriction will only take you so far. To set your body back into weight loss mode is to know how many calories you are eating. You can use a food app. It makes it easier.
