    Hello, I also used to use MyFitnessPal but since surgery moved to Baritastic and it has been working well, since I concentrate on the protein and liquid the most. It will take some getting used to once I start tracking other things when in Maintenace, but I love the weight logging feature.

    HELLO EVERYONE. EXCITED NEWBIE HERE!

    @cut.the.VS 5 Months is not bad at all. I have my first consultation with my Doctor on Monday. I've been overweight ever since i graduated high school. My insurance never covered this procedure, then this year my company switched insurance providers and now it's covered. I'm so excited to meet with them Monday. I need to get this weight off of me so i can feel better!

    Denied

    I am so disappointed! I was denied! I have Blue Shield of California and I guess one of their requirements is to be one a weight loss medication for at least one year. My primary Dr had at one time tried to find me one that didn’t interact with my antidepressants but couldn’t find one and so he said I can’t take them. The surgeons office said if I get documentation of this they will turn it in with an appeal. Has this ever happened to anyone where an appeal got them approved?

    Any 50yo or older?

    I had my sleeve in May 2022 at age 62, so I am 8 mos post-op. Recovery was quick and fairly easy for me! Like others, wish I hadn't waited so long! I've stalled over the holidays and even gained a couple of pounds, but I am back on track now. My weight loss has slowed dramatically and my surgeon says I'll probably only lose another 20 lbs, but I'm good with that. I feel FANTASTIC! I've eliminated one of my BP meds and the other has been cut in half and some days I don't take it if my pressure is low. I do at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise five days per week, alternating stationary bike and rowing machine. I think my hair loss has finally slowed/stopped. My surgeon & internist are very pleased with my progress. I'm sure I could have lost more if I had eaten cleaner the past 8 mos, but I really have just been relying on portion control and eating pretty much what I want, but focusing on healthier options when available and keeping track of my protein intake. Definitely consumed far too many sweets over the holidays. My husband and I are spending a week in a cabin in the woods near Fairbanks, Alaska in a couple of weeks and I'm excited to see how much easier the smaller me will fit in the seat for the long flight!

    Stomach discomfort & confusion post op

    Yep, completely normal. With VSG, they remove the part of the stomach the produces the hunger hormone, ghrelin. That means not only have you just had major surgery, completely changed your eating habits, have new anatomy, but the signal that used to tell you when you were hungry no longer exists (or is significantly altered - some folks do still experience hunger post-op). I always said in those early days that I was learning my "new plumbing" because it felt like I had a whole new set of pipes! For me, eating on a fairly regular schedule helped. Over time, that schedule has changed and I've adjusted as I've lost weight and healed and all of that. But in those really early days, having a system really, really helped. I knew I would get my water and protein in, I could avoid a drop in blood sugar that gave me the shakes, and it helped me learn my new hunger and full queues more quickly. Give yourself lots of grace, this is all new and you are figuring it out!

    Welcome & congrats on your upcoming surgery. You picked one of the questions for which there is no definitive answer. Some will say yes & others no because surgeons have different plans & requirements. Best advice is to ask your surgeon or their team & then follow their advice. Same with what foods you can or can’t eat & when, how long each of your staged return to eating phases last, whether you can use a straw or not & so on. Nothing stopping you reducing or stopping your caffeine intake if you want as it can irritate your delicate post surgery healing tummy. May be look to reducing things you consume a lot or crave like carbonated drinks (one you will have to avoid for a while or forever depending on how you react), sweet things, etc. so withdrawals symptoms while on the pre surgery & staged return to eating post surgery diet aren’t quite as severe & hard to manage. To update your profile information using the web based version not the app, click the three line icon in the top right hand corner, select account & then profile. You can update your current weight as you progress by scrolling to almost the bottom of any page to the together we have lost section. All the best.

    Hormones

    Estrogen is stored in your fat so as you lose weight that estrogen is released into your blood stream. This estrogen flush can make you more fertile (many surgeons suggest doubling down on contraceptives), longer/shorter/heavier/lighter periods, more or fewer PMS symptoms, acne, headaches, etc. In my case my menopausal symptoms disappeared for a while (came back though ☹️). The surgery & weight loss can also cause other seemingly unusual effects For example, many see their cholesterol &/or bilirubin levels rise, liver function to be off, etc. It can even cause gall stones to develop. These are all temporary effects & will eventually decrease until your weight loss stabilises or slows & they disappear. Of course if the persist or seem extreme, contact your doctor.

    Chronic pain, WLS, and exercise

    I didn’t exercise in the traditional sense & I lost all my weight & more. I made my everyday tasks more active. Walked up & down escalators, took stairs not lifts, parked further away from where I was going, took the long way round, made multiple trips up & down my stairs even if I could do it in one trip, etc. Now I do some stretches, use resistance bands, some wall pushups & sit ups. Mainly for my back - have oozing discs. Honestly what I do takes about 20 mins max over a three or four separate sessions. Wouldn’t burn 30 calories. 😆. Exercising accounts for only about 10% of the weight you have to lose. So want to lose 100lbs, exercise will only account for about 10lbs. Of course there are many benefits to exercising. There are lots of low impact, gentle exercises designed for various physical limitations available online which you may be able to do without causing a flare up. Give them a go & see how you go.

    Any 50yo or older?

    I'm 61 going on 62 soon. I don't have a lot of sagging. I think it's because I'm loosing very slowly, I go to the gym and do weights for an hour 2-3 times a week and ride my bike. Maybe that has helped me. I'm sure it will come eventually. 😉

    Considering another surgery

    The side effect of my medication is weight gain; for example my younger brother at one time took this same medication and gained over 60 pounds in 3 years (prior to that he was always skinny). I have def noticed an increased appetite with it. I have never eaten to feel "full" or uncomfortable since surgery, I have always been good about stopping and eating small portions at a time (half plate of food). However, I think my main issue is feeling hungry again soon after eating and then snacking. The only thing I can think to do is to measure every single thing I eat for a period of time and see if that helps, and to cut out snacking completely. My diet is average at best. I still make sure to get 60-80 grams of protein a day, and enjoy lots of veg and some fruits, however I do not stick to low carb or low fat options all the time--this may be another issue.

    Considering another surgery

    that medication you started the side affect listed on it is possible weight gain. But lets start there at your food habits... Are you still eating healthy? making sure to limit carbs and sugars? or are you just eating whatever? I am only 9 months out and i dont feel the restriction i did 5 months ago. I can eat much larger portions than before. The goal tho is to limit those portions regardless. The goal is not to eat until you cant anymore. Its to eat until you are satisfied. not full but good. Not sure what else you can do with surgery. you already had the sleeve and then bypass which is what most people go to when they gain too much weight after sleeve or have GERD issues.

    Weight regain after revision

    To be frank, eating less than before surgery is not saying a whole lot. I could eat 1/4 of what I ate pre-op and still be eating 4 times what my current portions are. Unplanned snacks are deadly. If your plan includes snacks then they need to be planned and tracked like everything else. My plan never included snacks. Eating our appropriate portion size is THE key element post-op. Even in maintenance portion control is important to maintain and not gain. You have the motivation. Good luck, Tek

    Thank you Tek for your response. I do need to work on my portion control, although I still eat much less than before surgery, I know I am still eating more than I need to at this stage. I like the idea of measuring portions for my meals. I also tend to snack more lately, while at work. My initial motivation was to extreme health issues, thankfully all have resolved, but I know I am not immune and those could come crawling back if I don't get this under control and gain more. Also of course, big motivation is being around and healthy for my son, and of course, for myself.
  17. So I'm going to just copy and paste part of my about me section to make this a bit easier lol: "in May 2019 I had VSG, and for about a year everything seemed to be doing fine. Initially, I was successful and almost 100 lbs down. I got down to 174lbs within a year. Almost 14 months later, I was dealing with a new stressor in my life (an abusive situation) and ended up developing extreme GERD, reflux, and would feel burning acid come up each night--sometimes choking on it and breathing in my own stomach acid. I ended up suffering with bronchitis and pneumonia due to the extreme GERD several times within a short period of time. My surgeon stated that this is one of the possible side effects of VSG as well as extreme stress, and offered revision to do the RNY and a hiatal Hermia repair. All went well, and at first, I seemed to have recovered well. But now, here I am in 2023 and I have slowly gained over 30lbs in the last 2.5 years, going from my lowest post-bariatric weight of 174 lbs to now at about 207.7 lbs. Not really sure if it was a result of surgery, or poor eating habits (or both), because from the moment I woke up from surgery and in each phase of my bariatric diet, I felt as though my "pouch" or new stomach was no longer feeling restrictive, and I was able to eat much larger portions than before. " I know 30 lbs may not seem like " a lot" to most, but to me it is a big deal and has been stressing me out a lot. Lately, I have been considering seeing either my old surgeon or possibly a new one for a check up to see if there is something "wrong" with the size/my surgery failed. Or perhaps, maybe this is hormonal, stress-related, etc. One thing I would like to add is that the majority of this weight regain started the moment I started taking SSRI medication (which I am still on for anxiety and depression). Looking for advice on what to do....as I have been trying to motivate myself to get back on track...

    You can eat more because you no longer have a Pyloric valve between your sleeve and your intestines, so your food doesn't stop in your sleeve but goes directly into your intestines. So, effective restriction is probably a bit less. Which is why you should measure your food for each meal and stop when you complete the meal or get that no-more feeling, whichever comes first. We can't rely on just restriction to do the trick because for most people restriction declines with time. We need to build the right habits. It's easier when restriction is tight and weight loss is some positive reinforcement. It's harder later when trying to get back on track, but it can still be done. We just need to rely on portion control more and the positive weight loss reinforcement takes a bit longer. As for motivation, what was it to get surgery? Has that changed? Good luck, Tek
  19. Almost certainly this year some time. The wait can be highly variable depending upon the practice - some have a longer backlog than others while some may require some amount of pre op dieting, specified weight loss, or nutrition education (one practice I know of, the RD, nutritionist, has a sign off before the patient sees the surgeon for scheduling (do you think you are really ready for this...?) This is not necessarily a bad thing, as most of us need some kind of guidance in how to maintain ourselves after we lose the weight, and that is very much a mental/habit game.
  20. Hi all! I'm new to this group and looking for support. A little bit about me, In 2019 I had VSG--year later had extreme GERD/Reflux---then in 2021 I had revision surgery to RNY and hernia repair. Long story short, post VSG I was down 100 lbs almost and got to around 174, but after my revision to bypass to alleviate the GERD I noticed almost right away my "pouch/new stomach" or whatever you want to call it was no longer as restrictive and pretty much right away I was able to each much more volume. Over time, I gained about 30 lbs in 2 years, and I feel just awful. Has anyone else experience this before, and if so, do you have any tips? I am honestly struggling with motivation and getting back on the ball, and I am looking for advice, ideas and/or support. Thanks everyone!

  22. Hello, I was wondering how soon after your insurance companies approved you for surgery, did you get a surgery date? My insurance company only requires documentation of the procedure, documentation of failed weight loss attempts (i have a letter from my PCP for this), a psych eval, and nutrition eval. I feel i can have all of that in the next month or two. Is it possible that i could have surgery this year?

    Approval process with Cigna??

    I have Cigna as well and I have my consultation with my doctor on Monday. I too wondered the same thing as i've seen others mention they needed failed weight loss attempts documented. My PCP wrote me a letter that said "The patient has undergone the following weight loss attempts..." and listed out everything i've tried. I called Cigna, read that to them and they told me that was sufficient. The only thing i need now is a psych evaluation and nutritionist evaluation. But I agree...it doesn't state ANYTHING about the 12 months of failed attempts.

    Chronic pain, WLS, and exercise

    Exercise helps, but is not absolutely essential. Many don't bother or feel like it until they have lost much of their weight, if ever. My wife is still quite averse to it, and does suffer some from it as she is getting older, but that didn't greatly impact her weight loss from the surgery (some say that the loss you achieve is 80% diet, 20% exercise, if that.) Exercise if great, and needed for simply maintaining our various body functions, so do what you can for your needs, but don't think in terms of your weight loss being overly influenced by it. Do what is needed to tend to your other issues, and let the surgery and diet take care of the weight.
