    Sleep Apnea and Sleeve Surgery

I also have sleep apnea and have had it for quite awhile. I'm on my 3rd CPAP machine and I have to tell you ....I've never gotten used to it. I am quite anxious when it comes to having anything around my head and face and though I know there is forced air pressure, I feel like I am being suffocated. I never found a mask that was comfortable, and believe me, I've tried dozens of them!! The nasal pillows are by far the best or at least easiest to tolerate. All of my doctors stress how dangerous the Sleep Apnea is.. not to mention that it causes weight gain and could slow down you weight loss after surgery. I do try to use it but I have to say I am not 100% compliant and I remove it many times in my sleep in the middle of the night. I can only relate my experience, I don't know how to make it easier for you...all I can say is try it. A friend of mine was hesitant about using a cpap until his doctor showed him the video of him sleeping. He flipped and flopped all night like a beached croaker. It made a believer out of him and now he is sold on his CPAP. Maybe it just takes getting used to. Good luck.
  2. I want to ask my doctor this. I made the surgery happen and it was a mistake. Im 7/8 months postop and Im gaining weight. I was down to 267 at my lowest and I was 273 at my checkin in December, and 281 now, end of March. Is there an easy way to see this? COULD my stomach stretch back to its full size? I don't need a peptalk or anything. I KIND of want to go to a nutritionist and see if they can help me. I dont want to go to my followup appointment in a couple weeks because I swear to god all the doctor will say is "youre gaining weight, this is bad. you shouldnt be gaining weight. gaining weight is bad. your surgery is not a success." - please, I don't need to drive there for you to tell me that.

    Gained 4 pounds :(

I second the time-of-month possibility!! Around when I ovulate I lose water and then I gain water like crazy and it looks like weight gain... Then after my period it looks like I'm having just SUPER weight loss!! Progesterone makes me puff up....

    Okay, THIS is interesting...!

Some of the most forward and promising research on weight gain/loss has to do with the gut biome/microbial system. This is just one more bit of research. I am going to move this to the research forums here. Other bits of this kind of research is posted there and I think I put some in the 5:2 info links in the Vets forum if you are interested.

    Pre op pcos,ttc

I was diagnosed with PCOS 14 yrs ago. Took metformin for a long time. Switched birth control pills so many times. Lost weight, gained weight and was infertile. After a long time my body stopped responding to metformin. They upped it to 1000mg 3x a day and added spironolactone. I was taking pre natals at the time to try & grow my hair for my wedding. I was pregnant the next month. I delivered my daughter over my 31st bday. I was kept on metformin through pregnancy and on weight gain restriction. I was off the meds after pregnancy and losing weight and doing well until i had implanon in my arm. I gained all my weight back, acne returned, hair started thinning and I went back on everything. I had enough and wanted a permanent solution. I'm 3 wks post op Monday, doc warned me that I'll be super fertile and pregnancy is not recommended for 2 yrs. I left the hospital off all meds! Knock on wood, still no acne

One if my closest friends and I talked about this very thing. She and I actually train and dance together. She does not have a history of obesity or weight gain. She said, "I really didn't know what to say that was my business." Because I hadn't started the conversation. We all come from different places.

    It Changed my life!

You look amazing. I'm sure that is a common fear. I'm just a couple months post op and I'm already fearing weight gain. Maybe a before and after photo on the fridge might help. I'm not sure. Welcome.
  10. It has been over a year since I have been on here & wow have I missed being able to chat with people that can relate to my weight struggles. This journey has been a up and down roller coaster and I am learing more about myself everyday. I am struggeling with the 52lbs I gained with my pregnancy I just cant lose it! Now to top that off my Dr. informed me I have Gallstones and he wants me to get my gallbladder out and I dont want to! I have read so Many BAD things about weightloss stopping and weight gain after this surgery and I am not doing it! I have 130lbs still to lose till I am at my goal and I will be damned if I am gonna blow it cause I have some discomfort! I have joined a gym something I thought I would never do and more shocking I enjoy it and I know I can lose this weight I am just hitting a few bumps in the road to this thing called success.

Hi Ness! I am so happy for you joining a gym. You give me inspiration. I hate the house of pain but I know it does good for me...when I go! Take care and keep moving forward!!!!

  11. My name is Kerri and I'm a 37 year old wife and mother of 2. I've been battling PCOS since 1999, gaining weight, losing weight, gaining more...blah blah blah, you know the story! I've been on Metformin for more than 10 years, but my a1c keeps creeping up. Doctors have suggested that I look into bariatric surgery, so I went to two seminars. That was two years ago, when I found out that our insurance doesn't cover a dime of bariatric surgery, under any circumstance. In the meantime, I prayed that we could come up with the money. I have all of the support of my husband and family, but the funds just weren't there. To make a really long story short, I got some blood test results recently that gave me an official diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. I'm feeling pretty crappy with headaches and horrible, throbbing leg pain. I decided right then and there that I need to make this happen sooner rather than later. WE HAVE THE FUNDING FOR MY SURGERY! I'm currently scheduling my scope, then I will have a surgery date! I'm hoping for end of June. I am so excited to go on this journey with you all! Now I'm off to explore this fun site!
  12. Thank you for that @@2muchfun, it means a lot to me. After 2 years of starvation mode and now adding the cardiac meds, which induce weight gain, my body is hanging on to every calorie. I'm worse off now than before, metabolically speaking. It's a bitter pill, but at least I CAN swallow it now
  13. Honestly, I wish people had offered me legit help back in the day. It's a bit different because my weight gain started when I was a little kid (though my parents did nothing out of the belief that I didn't need my diet policed and that I'd find my own way to healthy eating), and obviously your husband is an adult, but I don't think offering help and support and policing his diet are the same thing. Maybe just say to him, "I've observed these behaviors, and I don't know what they're about for you, but I know for a lot of people they may mean x,y, or z. If you're happy, I'm happy, but if you're not happy, there are thing we can try (therapy and nutritionist for starters), and I'll support you and help you all the way. I won't bring it up again, but if you decide you want to bring it up or try something new tomorrow, next month, next year, or in ten years, let me know." I really wish someone had said something like this to me, not just when I was a kid, but also as an adult.
  14. I hate having to make this post but I'm concerned and need some advice because I don't know what to say or do. I got my surgery done back in December and I've been doing great, since starting this journey I've lost over 60 pounds. However I'm worried about my husband. See, when we started dating (we were teenagers) he was somewhere between normal weight and underweight. Very skinny. In the last 4 years (since I found out I was pregnant 4 years ago) he has gained about 40-45 pounds. He says that his metabolism just isn't what it use to be anymore and that he thinks about food all the time. He doesn't take a lunch to work and when he comes home he overeats on foods that aren't good for him. He wakes up in the middle of the night to eat too. He says he cant sleep if he doesn't eat something. If I don't finish my meal or if my daughter doesn't finish her meal, he eats it in addition to his meal. Now I don't eat the same types of foods he eats. He buys the foods he wants but he will eat dinner when I make it. That's the only meal we actually eat together. I don't want to see him go through what I went through with the weight gain. It's a horrible thing to go through. Right now he is in the 'overweight' category but I feel like if he keeps treading down this path its not going to help any. If I say I am going to make such and such for dinner he always says to make sure I make enough. Example: His idea of enough is a 2 pound steak, of which I am only eating less than 3 ounces of and so is my daughter. He will eat the rest. If I don't make "enough" food (according to his idea of enough food is) he gets upset and says "what the heck am I going to do with that? I'm not a child" referring to the portion size, which is an average portion size for an adult. How do I talk to him? what do I say? He is extremely stubborn and set in his ways. I've already said to him that I don't want him to go through what I did with weight gain because I know how it is and it's a horrible thing to go through. He just sat there and listened but didn't say anything.
  15. Scared? Yes. All the time. But that is good right now. I was told by someone at work yesterday "you look great, you have lost so much weight. ....again". This was just a very good reminder for me for that I have had a very, very long history of weight loss and weight gain. Usually in the past this was the moment I would feel defeated and give up. I totally recognize this behavior now and am much stronger to just let it go. We can ALL do this! Keep up the great work.

    A Little Disappointed

I'm surprised no one told you about post-op weight gain. It's very common because you are often swollen and Fluid filled. I had my hips replaced in October. I gained 15 lbs. from the surgery. I didn't weight my self for weeks after but eventually, it came off... And I mean it when I say weeks. That's how long it can take. Just continue what you are doing and soon enough, the numbers will drop.
  17. I think you are right in some areas. Research and knowledge is so important. But I also think that dedication to improving your health is the most important.. not 100% because that would mean we were perfect..And we know none of us are. I was one of those that thought I had it all sewed up. I knew what I was getting into and researched it for 2 years. After the surgery I realized I knew nothing at all. Sure I watched a few videos on how the procedure was done. Followed experiences on You Tube. Spent some time on here reading others experiences. Here is information you need to continue and succeed. Fight your way, day to day. Learn to fix your brain by reading how others did it or are doing it. Fight your fears by seeing how others have handled it. And realizing that it is a life time war that you win one fight at a time. I could broad cast my own loss every day on here but that is not the real deal. I lost my weight differently then most people on this forum and lived to tell about it. I never ever thought about stalls, weight gain or loss. I have gone by what I felt like and clothes sizes. We don't have a support group here either and it ticks me off so much because hundreds of people in my area have had WLS and it is like the biggest secret in history. Go where you learn the most and be as prepared as you can. My experience was that I would never have been ready if I looked into that completely..And never could I have looked into it completely anyway..I think you and I need to use every venue available to us. And start making a dent in the spots where there is no support or help for us. There is so much more then losing the pounds. There are the emotional, mental, physical and constant self doubt and not to mention how others treated us and now treat us differently. It is such a merry-go-round it makes my head spin.

    Can't stop losing

One of the issues post plastics is that the compression garments sqeeze your tummy and people can't eat as much at once. I was hungry ALOT so I ate more frequent tiny meals and had a lot of Protein drinks. Alot of people go into mega burn post plastics too which I must have since I didn't gain weight and I ate CONSTANTLY I was so hungry. I guess I am one of those people who will never have problems with anerexia or losing too much weight or anything like that. My body gets to feeling a little under-plenished and I get HUNGRY. Once I got to my initial goal of 158 I maintained there for 6 months before dropping another 10. i am maintaining in the range of 146-152 these days just as easily as I maintained 158 but I think that it helped that I took a little break from losing. My body has a real survival gene I guess - it lets me know when the calorie bank is running low. I really wonder and find it puzzling in many ways that people who had such a high burn pre-op or for whatever reason find that they can't stop losing now. I am very supportive - don't get me wrong - I have a close friend who works so hard to keep weight on (he is older and naturally skinny and drops weight when anything bad happens) I get it that it is a very serious problem. It is just so foreign to me that it is hard to even understand it. I hope that people who do struggle with this realize that we do SUPPORT you because we all have some sort of issue with food and weight and what we all want is a healthy, comfortable relationship with food and weight. I just don't always understand it. I do however know how I gain weight... carbs are the secret to my weight gaining success. Not only do carbs tend to make me gain weight, they also make me hungry so I can keep gaining. It's great to know I have a good backup plan should I ever get too thin. (crackers, Peanut Butter, high carb Protein Bars, sweet fruit especially juices - doesn't even need to be unhealthy carbs, any will do!)

Gaining weight back after the sleeve

That's very interesting. I think it'd be very hard to completely stretch out the sleeve but one could gain wait with the sleeve by 'grazing' They use that term for people that eat very frequently and even in small amounts that could add up to a lot of extra calories which would lead to weight gain. Thanks.

    Irregular cycles still?

A few years ago I was diagnosed with something called Polycystic ovarian syndrome. It is actually a very common problem amongst overweight women. It causes irregular periods and small cysts in the ovaries. It is also linked with weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease. PCOS is one of the reasons why I finally decided to have weight loss surgery. There is not much awareness about it and although I had textbook symptoms since I was a teen. I was not diagnosed until my 30s. Anyway my point is talk to your Obgyn about your irregular periods. It's important to get your hormones under control.

is anybody out there suffering from pcos?

I have had PCOS for so long...when I was originally diagnosed it was called Stein-Leventhal Syndrome. I struggled 20 YEARS with it. Every single symptom, I have/had. Wls saved my life. I went from 6 insulin injections a day, to nothing. My PCOS helped me get high lipids, battle diabetes, high blood pressure, hair loss on my head, excessive hair growth everywhere else, extreme weight gain...I could go on and on. 2 years post vsg, my ONLY regret: that I didn't do the surgery sooner! 2 years post op, 188 pounds down, healthy, and 10 weeks pregnant!

    Hypo and worried!

Here is the run down... Had vsg 2 years ago. Lost 180 pounds. Pre-vsg I had a slew of health issues. PCOS, high lipids, high blood pressure, diabetes...you name it, I had it. Now...I am 10 weeks pregnant. I see a high risk ob with consultation from my Bari surgeon. However, I now have to eat every hour or two and for the first time in my life, I am constantly hypo! Docs are ok with 1 hour post meal bs at 70. My body is not. I also had two miscarriages pre-vsg and was constantly hyper with them. I am struggling to keep weight gain at a minimum but loading carbs is zapping me! Any advice?
  25. I know that I've been on this site before many times but I still don't know how to start a new subject or reply without doing a quote first. Please someone help me. I may be seemingy stupid but I just can't seem to find it. Thx. Now I've lost 30lbs in 8 months. I take a few weight gaining drugs plus insulin. So I know my losing will be slow . I have 6cc in 10cc band. I now think next months ckup I'll need another fill. Everything is going down nice..pills too. But I'm still eating far too much and still getting hungry...I know everyones different but anyone with a 10cc band what amount of ccs have you found to be beneficial?
