    Vegetarian

When you say you Blended soup... Is what you're saying is that whatever kind of soup you had say , cream of mushroom or vegetarian vegetable, you would just put it in a blender and then you could eat it like that?

    Vegetarian

I do not do the non fat, sugar free stuff and never did. I eat vegetarian and vegan meals. I’m also a year out from being sleeved. I’ll tell you in the beginning it is imperative that you do focus on getting protein in though. I did it with plant protein powder. I did suck it up and just used some premier protein (cause insurance paid for it) for a little while. When I started soft foods, I had eggs, cheese, and mashed black beans. There are some threads in the vegan/vegetarian forums that can be helpful for ya, as we’ve all shared what we’ve done, had, eating, etc.

Are you vegetarian/vegan or whatever the new term is? Why are you wanting to looking to replace a superior protein (chicken) with a merely good protein (soy)? Don't get me wrong, I love vegetable patties and all kinds of vegetable dishes, but I still wouldn't purposefully replace chicken with soy if I wanted a chicken dish. Chicken is higher in protein, it has a higher bio-availability, and it maintains satiety longer. But if you are doing it for vegetarian lifestyle choice, then it makes sense.

    Vegan protein?

I'm so excited to read your posts!! I am a non-dairy vegetarian and have been worried about protein consumption post-surgery. Now I get most from beans, quinoa, rice, and veggies. I have been searching for Protein powders that fit the nutritional guidance given by my nutritionist and it's tricky. What can you share about isolates?

    I got a date !

I basically lived off of sugar free jello, pudding, and popsicles during my liquid diet. I hated it, but that's what I used. To prepare, my fiance made some homemade baby food for me in our Magic Bullet. Mostly chicken and turkey - gotta focus on that protein. Lean protein like chicken, turkey, and fish is better for you. Morning Star vegetarian meals are fairly decent, too. I ate that once I was given the clear on solid foods. What you need to get beforehand, though, would be some chewable daily multi-vitamins. I had the orange flavor (that of which I wasn't a fan of) and the spearmint flavor (which tasted better). My recovery time was about two weeks, I think? Might have been three. I would ask my doctor about it if I were you, though, just to be sure.
  7. I recently bought some products from Gardein. I was hooked from the first bite. I've tried the fish (FAVORITE), chick'n strips, and the meatballs. Yum yum yum. I'm not a vegetarian, but I was looking for a good way to incorporate some soy protein. And it ended up being delicious. According to their website "gardein is a wholesome range of tasty plant-based foods with a meaty texture. It’s made from soy, wheat and pea proteins, vegetables and ancient grains (quinoa, amaranth, millet and kamut®). gardein is easy to digest and free of cholesterol, trans and saturated fats. The majority of gardein foods are a good source of fiber and low fat too. gardein is also animal and dairy free." I bought this from Hyvee, but I've seen it at Walmart as well. Their website has a store locator. And LOTS of recipes.

    Vegetarian

Good Day! It's me again..lol Next question/issue: I'm a vegetarian and prefer eating whole natural foods. I'm concerned about all the "non-fat" "sugar-free" "food" that it looks like I'm going to have to eat! So processed, chemical filled, ugh.. HELP! My tentative date is September 24th

    KETO

Yes. I don't know how it works with insulin pumps but I am pretty sure he works with patients like that too. Not sure how vegetarian works. He totally takes you off carbs. So it might be diametrically opposed. I think he as a T1, only takes 5units of long acting insulin daily. That's all he needs to cover his food. It's pretty amazing. Seriously. 5units. No short acting stuff at all. He works on the premise that every 10g of whole non-netted carbs will raise bgs 5pts. And that the body has a 24hour food memory. If your beta cells are still producing, they know how much insulin to pump out based on the previous meal from the day before. So if one day you give it a binge full of carbs and the next you are "back on the wagon" and at that meal, you barely eat--you will get an ass load of insulin pumped into your system.

    KETO

I sent it the article to my son (T1 diabetes), but he is mostly vegetarian so not sure how easy this kind of diet would be for him, tho I know it can be done. Fortunately, insulin pumps these days do a lot of self-correcting.
  11. Everyone's responses here have been so thought-provoking and don't know about you guys, but they have helped me explore stretching personal beliefs and goals. Thank you so much for taking time to give such in depth, thoughtful responses!! In doing this I found this most recent interview with Dr. Weiner that I wanted to share. And his thoughts on set points and weight loss are going to be confirmation to some and challenge others of us! I just thought it was interesting and real world from his practice. And wanted to share. (BTW, I don't hold with his vegetarian/vegan approach but do believe that we need the phytonutrients that are found in good consumption of leafy greens, low glycemic veg, and low glycemic fruits. So I cherry pick from his philosophy and from the low carb docs such as Dr. Stephen Phinney, Dr. Jeff Volek, Dr. Eric Westman, Dr. Jason Fung, Dr. D'Agostino, and many more.)
  12. i was pregnant essentially for three years straight. Each pregnacy gain compounded on top of the other . I gained around 110 pounds total. Decided to work on a total lifestyle change for my family by becoming vegan for a year (totally unsustainable for me) then vegetarian (or carbetarian lol ) for 10. I lost about 30lbs that way and was there for years. I was never an obese child but i wasnt small either. As a teen i was in the range of 150. I was about 165ish when i got married and about the same when i got pregnant. I ate normally, i dont think i had any im eating for two moments. I also dont think i ever placed any real focus on losing weight until it became medically necessary. I was so busy that i put myself last, never recognizing my weight was a problem because i was "healthy fat" lol I think people should have goals and smash them but not everyones goal is a set number, sometimes its range. Im ok with a range as long as its sustainable. I really only care about long term changes.

No weight loss, unable to eat more

Thanks Glamgirl I hope the same for you!! I'm doing well with my water but definitely struggling with the protein as I'm vegetarian so it's not easy but we'll keep trying. Hugs!!
  14. I think one of the reasons my program has lower protein requirements than you'll often see....is that my program serves a LOT of international clients, many of whom are vegetarian or semi-vegetarian culturally. High protein diets DO promote faster weight loss. This is undeniable. But I'm building my forever diet...and I'm trying to get my body used to a diet it can be on forever...so I don't have a big metabolic shift later. (or the weight gain that can occur with big dietary changes) For me, a high protein low carb diet is not a great choice for a forever diet. If I were 400 pounds...I would consider a very restrictive high protein diet for a short period of time for rapid weight loss. At 190...I want something sustainable and permanent. I want a forever diet that I can live with...well...forever. LOL:)
  15. I lived in Japan for a year. People in Japan have the second longest longevity in the world, right after Monaco (Mediterranean). Both the Japanese diet and Mediterranean diet are high in complex carbs and much lower in protein than the American diet. They eat carbs and veggies...and live to be an average of 85 and 89, respectively. I follow a semi-vegetarian lowfat diet because I feel better, my cholesterol is perfect on it, and I want to be healthy and active like a old Japanese lady:) Japan has one of the lowest cancer rates among developed nations, too. And one of the lowest rates of cardiovascular disease.
  16. I think in the recipes section there is a subsection for vegetarian/vegan recipes so you'll likely find some other vegan members posting in there Good luck and welcome to the May team! MAY you succeed beyond your wildest dreams!!!

Dr. Atkins, pioneer of the ketogenic diet

and cardiomyopathy which started the ball rolling. It was caused by an infection over a decade before his death. Here's one for you. I had CLEAN arteries and normal heart and pretty perfect labs. Despite PCOS, I had managed to keep my pre-diabetes at the PRE level for over 10 years. Developed breast cancer. Had massive doses of chemo and left side radiation that gave a big dose to my breast bone. 5 years later I'm diagnosed with mild atherosclerotic plaques. Left atrial enlargement. Fluid around my heart. And a fibrous growth on my pericardium. So when I die are you gonna say that damned low carb Atkins diet she followed caused her heart problems? Or will you be more accurate and give the full HISTORICAL facts that in greater than 85% of women with left breast neoplasms who undergo chemotherapy and have left side chest radiation with mediastinal exposure suffer from CHF and CVD? Cuz it's the same analogy. The guy got a virus. His heart enlarged and was never the same after that. Our very healthy, thin, 40 year old friend got the same virus. He survived 9 years before he died waiting for a new heart. BTW, his BP was crazy bad too after his heart enlarged. He was btw, a vegetarian. John died less than 50 years old from heart failure. At the time of his death, he had plaques up the wazoo. But the reason for his CHF was cardiomyopathy, cardiomegaly brought about by viral infection.

How did you pick your doctor?

I did a LOT of research. My criteria: Doctor had to be board certified and have a stellar reputation. (My doc is actually ON the board of bariatric surgeons here who creates protocol for certification) Make sure to ask your doctor how many procedures he/she does each week, and how many procedures they've done total. Some surgeons will provide success statistics for their patients. Hospital had to be a Center of Excellence. I wanted everyone involved in my care to have experience dealing with lots of bariatric patients. I wanted a ward dedicated to bariatric surgery....not just a couple of beds. Hospital had to be a major trauma center. I wanted a big enough hospital to attract and retain surgical talent and have good resources for unexpected cardiovascular events. I wanted a big enough bariatric center to have a dedicated 24/7 emergency line and an excellent staff for follow ups (which are crucial to safety and success) I was particularly interested in post surgical diets. While I was willing to do a keto based diet for a short period of time, I really hate how I feel on keto...and a lot obariatric doctors push it. My brain feels sluggish and my cholesterol goes up. None of these things are acceptable to me....so I needed a program that worked with low glycemic carb eaters who like a lot of plant based protein. (I'm not a vegetarian, but I am not a huge fan of getting the bulk of my protien from whey and meat) My program works with a lot of international clients with different dietary preferences, vegans, etc. My diet (Mayo Clinic Diet) was well received at my program. My program fit these criteria, and is associated with a well respected major research hospital. I've been really happy with my choice:)
  19. I’m looking for other women like me that will share their weight loss experience! I’m nervous I won’t lose as much as I want to. I’m a lifelong vegetarian and already work out three times a week. I’ve been athletic my whole life but have an extremely hard time losing weight. I did strict keto for a year between my pregnancies and lost 48 lbs but plateaued and was never able to get below 248 no matter what I did. Im 5’10” and I’ve never been thin or even average. At 12 years old I was 5’9” and 205 lbs. I wore a size 16 pants. I hadn’t even gone through puberty yet. I can’t identify with women who were thin when they were young and then gained a lot of weight. I did gain weight gradually but at 205 I was a size 16 and at 296 I’m a size 20. I honestly feel like I’m exactly the same size as I was back then; my body just feels older, but I still / always felt like a big person. Being tall contributes to that. I’m approved for surgery but need to hear that there are other women out there like me, who have been big their whole life but are also strong and athletic. My goal weight is 200 lbs. I’d love to be a solid size 14 and feel like clothes today are better for pear-shaped women like me.
  20. You can buy pea protein and brown rice protein at health food stores and Amazon. What's nice about pairing a rice and legume protein...is that it creates a complete amino acid...so the protein is high quality like animal protein. It's just a nice alternative to constantly getting your protein from animal sources. My diet is a little heavier on plant based protein than most. I'm not a vegetarian, but I do eat a lot of alternative protein sources. (egg powder, crickets, pea protein, soy, fungus protein, etc) I just prefer not to consume so much dairy. (whey) Plus, the fiber in peas helps build good gut bugs:) You could use regular whey protein powder if you want to....no worries.
  21. Hello all...

On May 1st. 2018 it will be one year since my Roux-en-Y...gastric bypass..surgery. I had met my goal weight by the end of 2017...I have been able to maintain it since. It was the best thing I have done in my life. I had an easy recovery...(that's me..not everyone does). I did have some issues with "dumping" on occasion, that was the worst of it... ( but not many times)..but have done away with that issue..learning how to eat again..helps the situation.

I started my surgery with a 50 inch waist..and am now at a 34-36 inches (depending on the pants)..LOL. I started my surgery wearing a 4XL shirt and now wearing.. L-XL (depending on the shirt). It is so nice to walk into any men's fashion/clothing store and be able to pick something off the rack and buy it. NO MORE !!!!! big and fat stores for me !!!!!!  LOL People don't recognize me and tell me how great I look. WOW !!!...great for my ego !!!...LOL LOL LOL. I do have some flabby skin issues..and hope by weight lifting or have some surgery to deal with that..but my doctor says I should wait at least another year..in case I lose more weight.

I feel fantastic !!! I am turning 58 yrs old on July 26 th and feel and act 25 yrs.... well maybe 35 yrs. lol lol lol. I wanted to see my 60th B-Day. I have lot's of energy..and have a whole new life. I started my surgery with type 2 diabetes... that was out of control and living on Insulin...I had high Cholesterol and high Blood Pressure..both for which I took medication to control. I no longer take Insulin nor medication for High Blood/Cholesterol. Medication free...yippy !!!! I suffered from Arthritis in my knees and ankles and was popping Type 3 Tylenol like it was candy. It did nothing. No more of that **** !!! LOL. My Doctor is doing cartwheels he's so happy for me !

I am eating healthier than I have in my whole life...I personally have made some serious food eating decisions. I "DON'T" eat white bread, pasta, rice. I eat alternatives. I eat "Gluten free" foods...mostly, well I try !!! lol lol lol . I don't eat enough to worry about calorie counting..I eat by portions...so that's not an issue. I eat a variety of legumes (beans). I eat lot's and lot's and lot's of fruits and vegetables. I am trying to..slowly (yeah not easy) to become a vegetarian. There is so much healthy, good and nutritious food to eat. Without feeling you are depriving yourself. I read labels and mostly buy low fat and fat free items. BUT YOU MUST WATCH FOR SUGAR AND SODIUM CONTENT OR IT'S FUTILE...I have even splurged and had some small nibbles of "junk food" ..chocolate, ice cream, cake, on a special occasion..but look you only live once and once it's out of your system, you get back on track.  I stay away from..and never will go back to fast food or anything battered and deep fried !!!!!!! No burgers, fries, pizza !!! there are alternatives for that. I do admit; I miss "Fish and Chips"..wwwaaaa!!!!!. Look there are websites and blogs out there to guide and help you with all kinds of recipes.

The only thing  I can say is this (I'm not preaching) ...everyone is different. What's good for me may not be good for someone else. You must really want ..want ...want.. to be a better you !!!! It's will power.!!!

I am happier than I have been in a very long time...I was an emotional eater ..like many of you. Like they say food can't give you happiness...only you have the power to be happy and healthy.

I hope this maybe inspiring for someone...I can only "wish you the best" on your adventure and eat healthy and be strong the outcome is near and it will reward you in so many ways.

    ALL THE BEST !!!!22528257_1313341592127518_8132736741614246919_n.thumb.jpg.54e66b1af55ca9139db3e373b1dac482.jpg

Hi Jeffrey, reading about you made me feel much more positive. I am on my preop diet and I think it does make you dread about not being able to enjoy food again. You sound so positive and excited about good wholesome and healthy food that it reminded me not to feel down as I love all that food also and avoiding fish and chips etc shouldn't be a big deal.

It was good to hear about your diabetes as I had gestational twice and was having 3 injections a day, hypo's + worrying about eating all the time etc.

i also have hip dysplagia so I am hoping losing weight takes a lot of my pain away again and I'm able to be more active with my kids.

anyway seeing your lovely photo has made me want to get out in the fresh air and sunshine with kids(I'm in Australia so it's morning here🙂) thanks for the motivation and enthusiasm.

      Hi Jules

I joined this forum a few weeks after my surgery last year. I had a very bad experience with some folks on the site telling me because I was a so called newbie at this Bariatric program. I knew nothing of what I spoke. I would be tempted again, by all the bad foods and that I would fall of the so called "wagon". I would start to regain my weight after a year. Well if that didn't give me more incentive to prove them wrong ..nothing would. I didn't have this invasive surgery for anyone but myself. I really needed to take control of my life again. The health issues I was having were more con than pro. I can only speak for myself, and I'm not preaching. However the best decision I ever made in my life...and I've made some pretty dumb stupid decisions in the past. wwwaaaa!!! LOL

I have become a new person and feel terrific. I wanted to see my 60th B-Day and the way my health was going..that wasn't going to happen especially with the type 2 diabetesarrow-10x10.png. I was afraid of losing a limb due to it. Living on a daily bases with the pain agony was getting unbearable.

I guess what I'm trying to say..is that you must take control, mind over matter and will power is all important. I eat better than ever. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I have treats once in a while..I have learnt all kinds of tricks and food hacks to take care of those little cravings from time to time...don't need to feel discouraged ever.

I love going for walks and am very envious that you live in such a climate like Australia...try the cold and snow and ice of the frozen north in Canada...lol. It means a lot of snowbound days during the winter months and feeling like yeah a nice bag of potato chips and some sweet dessert would be great right now just to get through this horrid weather. LOL LOL LOL

I know you will do great. As well you have little ones who need a mommy to run and play with for a very long time. Like I mentioned there are so many alternatives nowadays to healthy eating... not just eating carrot sticks and celery...like a rabbit...lol

      good luck and good health..

      Jeffrey

    Any MAY sleevers???

my pre-op diet list only specifically says no potato, kumara or sweet potatoes. However I know sweet corn, pumpkins, and peas are also quite sweet. Maybe check with your nutritionist? Post surgery it will only be potatoes and sweet potatoes that I limit, most other veggies will be ok. I just picked up several cauliflowers on special to make some smooth cauliflower soup (which has a little sharp cheese and potato in it) to have frozen ready for liquids phase. Once I can have mushy foods I'll have my more usual chicken and vegetable soups - including the estimated 6g of protein in real homemade chicken stock, plus a scoop of bodie'z unflavored protein (15g) plus any soft bits of chicken I throw in, a simple bowl of chicken and veg soup will give me at least a third of my needed protein for the day. And I love my soups (as do my husband and son, haven't been able to convince my daughter yet) - the more fresh stuff included from my garden the better (herbs, garlic, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes mostly). I'll attach word documents of the cauliflower and cheese soup, and a nice-sounding mushroom soup that I plan to make for liquids phase. I"ll probably do a fairly thin basic butternut pumpkin soup with a little potato, carrot and cumin in it too. Cauliflower Cheddar Soup.docx Vegetarian Mushroom soup.docx
  23. Arnica, great for bruises also, calendula, very smooth and soothing. Odd, But as I go farther and farther into my weight loss journey I am becoming more holistic and leaning more toward vegetarian if not total vegan, meat doesn't sit well on a gastritis stomach as it used to. I've been going to fish, small amounts of Turkey or chicken. If I can keep Hector my baby ulcer asleep, life is more beautiful[emoji106][emoji14] Sent from my VS880PP using BariatricPal mobile app

    Protein bars?

I'm 4 months out and drink one Premier Protein daily....in my decaff coffee. 30g of Protein in the bank makes me less stressed out about my 60g+ per day protein goal since my diet is a more vegetarian than most.
  25. Adding to this - not trying to steal anyone's thunder - I'm about 20 months out, down about 110. Sometimes, I'm losing, sometimes not, because my concentration right now is on building muscle mass and reducing my overall body fat before plastics. I'm answering because I'm not vegetarian in the hopes that I can provide other answers - 1- On an average day, I eat about 100-120 grams of protein. I start most mornings with a shake because it is easy for me time wise to get out the door to work. I use Fairlife skim milk, a scoop of protein powder, a handful of frozen fruit and two tablespoons of Oikos triple zero vanilla yogurt. That accounts for 39 grams of protein and makes it pretty easy to get the rest in. For a morning snack, I'll have a container of Oikos Triple Zero (another 15 grams). Lunch is usually salad greens with chicken (usually left over from one I've roasted) about 4 ounces of chicken for another 30 grams of protein. So at this point in the day, I'm at 85 grams without too much trouble. In the afternoon, I'll have some cheese or some nuts - but I'll get in a 10-15 gram of protein snack. Dinner - is usually whatever I cook for the family - but again - I'll make sure I have another 20-30 grams of protein. Usually my calorie count is under 1500. I eat what I want. Some foods, my tummy doesn't like. I can only eat a little bit of pasta or I will feel ill - same with very sweet stuff. A few bites and I'm done with it. I have a cocktail or glass of wine when I want to. I always stay under 1500 calories - so if I dont' have extra calories for a glass of vino it doesn't happen. I drink at least 64 ounces of water a day - closer to 100 on days I fence because I will drink a quart of water while fencing. Exercise - I fence (as in en garde) - started doing that a year ago. I burn on average 900 calories doing 2 hours of fencing. I fence roughly 5 hours a week (Monday and Wednesday - 6:30-9 pm). I work with a personal trainer once a month to keep my routine in the gym fresh and I lift weights/do strength training at least 2 hours a week. I do Pilates for another 1 or 2 hours. I make the time because getting in shape is important - and like I said - I''m trying to drop my body fat in the range of 28% before I have plastics. (I"m at 31% right now, with is pretty good for a 56 year old menopausal woman!) Excess skin - for me - I couldn't. I have bat wings that make noise and I'm going to have to have a tummy tuck done. If not for the excess skin on my abdomen, I'd be wearing a size 6 or 4 pants rather than the 8 I'm wearing. (I really shouldn't complain - that's down from a 24). I'll probably have the abdominoplasty next year. I'm fortunate - my insurance will cover it. How do I feel - Like a new person. People don't recognize me sometimes. My knees don't really hurt any more. My only regret was waiting this long to do this.
