How many people do you have on "Ignore" here?
Officially Not Fatty Matty replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I only had the one know-it-all who couldn’t let a post go by without bragging about his success and flat out fat shamed people here. I didn’t ignore him because I wanted to be vocal against his bs. Reported every time he crossed the line and he’s gone now or lurking under yet another new name. I personally find it hard to pick the right balance of positive support vs “you need to get your shit together” type advice to give. Some people need one vs the other and its not really possible to always know who needs what to get through the issues they (sometimes) create for themselves. This is a wonderful forum and overall it’s got a great balance of people willing to offer real help, real advice. I don’t use Facebook but my wife shows me the crap-show on some of those gastric groups and it’s simply absurd compared to this place…. for the most part…. -
Long post but I wanted to provide what happened to me to try and help!!! Weeks 4-6 were exactly like that for me. Couldn’t even keep dissolvable zofran down. (Bizarre I know). Was getting like 100-150 calories & 15 g protein a day... if that. I ended up GAINING 6 lbs because my body was starving itself. Also ended up at urgent care with a banana bag 3x bc of it 😕 Basically I was told I had 2 options. Wait it out, or he goes in with the scope. I said no thanks to the scope. I’m at 57 days post-op now, I’m eating (750+ cals/90+ g protein a day) and cooking and smelling things again. That nauseous pit in my stomach and sinking feeling in my throat that was there 24/7 is gone! It just happened. I woke up one morning and my mom was cooking eggs and I asked for some. Wasn’t nauseous like I used to walk through the house holding my breath while there was food being prepared. Ate 1/2 of a medium egg and slowly built up my textures and flavors and added on to my meals from there! It’s tedious and it’s annoying and we have all these goals and rules, and we want to do it right so these things SUCK; but just stay the course, don’t get discouraged (I know that’s hard leaning over a trash can 5+ times a day, been there) but do the best you can with how your body is reacting post op, and hopefully with a little time and trial and error, it’ll get better like mine did. Have either of you tried like swansons sipping bone broth? It sounds weird but is packed with protein, it does have a slight flavor and I add garlic powder and a pinch of Cajun seasoning, but I was able to tolerate little sips of it at a time when I was sick! It REALLY helped. I couldn’t do warm stuff for 6 weeks so I let it cool to room temperature, but some people the warm is really soothing and good for them! Also, bari surgeon, NUT, and the 2 MDs I saw at urgent care all agreed that when you’re in that nauseous can’t keep anything down stage post op, the thing you should be focusing on isn’t protein intake or calories, but rather fluids. I didn’t even think about that. I’d get upset the protein shake made me sick; and quit putting anything near my mouth for hours. Trust me, severe dehydration is TERRIBLE. My lips and face were literally bleeding. My fever was over 102 and my pressure bottomed out. No hyperbole, one of those 3 days I drug myself to urgent care, I thought I was literally dying. I got on Amazon immediately and bought a 32 oz tumbler and I just keep it filled all day long and sip away. Not saying this to scare you, just want you to try and get your fluids in!! Sorry for being longwinded, I know how y’all feel and I just wanted to provide some encouragement!! It gets better!! I didn’t think it would, but the difference between week 6 and week 8 have been light years. AND once I started hitting my calorie, fluid, and protein goals again last week, I dropped 4 of the 6 lbs I gained in caveman mode! If y’all need anything, please feel free to PM me!

Upcoming Surgery in May!
Elahnen replied to DaisyAndSunshine's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi! I also have PCOS and I am going to go with the sleeve hopefully soon! My surgeon explained that for PCOS the sleeve is a better option for me bc they remove the stomach hormones and if for some reason the sleeve doesn’t get the desired results then can always do a bypass down the road. Something I just learned is dairy is not good for PCOS. I thought I was doing good drinking Premier Protein shakes and the dietician said to reduce dairy and do plant based Protein with almond milk fit shakes( Vega Protein Powder is sooo good) bc dairy cause inflammation and other trouble for pcos. Hopefully once you learn more and your test results come back you can make the best decision for yourself! Keep me posted on your journey! Good luck! -
Yup!!! For about 2 weeks I had to be VERY careful and within a quick dash (shuffle) of my bathroom It settled down to stools which resemble those of babies fed on breast milk ( If you know you know.!!!) Now I'm on soft/normal foods I have to be careful of constipation But still get what my surgeon classes "overflow diarrhea " but I had troubles with this and ibs-d pre surgery too Be carful of your fluids. If you feel dehydrated get help Take care...it passes

Clothing Problems! What to do?
chunkarella replied to KayBee1972's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i was lucky and had some clothes from when i lost about 70lbs a year before surgery.. but for the "inbetween" times when i just need something that fits, i go to walmart. i found a nice pair of jeans for $5 there. and i agree w/the belt sentiment.. but i know they can be uncomfortable, so anything with drawstrings help too. goodwill is also a good place to try your luck. or even tjmaxx bc they can have some good sales. -
I do, and it’s hard. But my BS is in line.

I am not the person you were debating with. I just added this because you seemed not to be familiar with the quote she was referencing. And I do find this law enforcement officer's language ("fed up", "at the end of his rope" and "a really bad day") to be minimizing and dismissive of what Robert Long did. Whether that's because he's male is up for debate, but I do find the tone to be excusing.
-
Just clarifying where the "having a bad day" comment came from: "“He was pretty much fed up and kind of at the end of his rope. Yesterday was a really bad day for him and this is what he did,” Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jay Baker said Wednesday. He was describing the 21-year-old man accused of killing eight people, mostly Asian and almost all women, in a rampage across three Atlanta-area spas." https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/03/17/jay-baker-bad-day/

Keeping surgery a secret? What did you tell others?
dmason99 replied to rmarierenwick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’ve told my boss bc I was just out on a 6 wk leave for shoulder surgery... and I need to take a few hrs off of work here and there for dr appts to get the wls approved thru insurance. I told my mom, (she’s a nurse too) who will help me thru the process... and lastly I told my sister and BIL. My sister is skinny and very weight conscience. She works out, eats healthy, etc. I wouldn’t be able to hide my restricted eating, having surgery, and all that comes with it. We are close so it’s nice to have my sister and mom to support me and talk about it with. Other than that, I’m telling NO ONE. I’m fortunately working from home thru Sept and I should have my surgery (Est July) before. People at work, family I bump into will get the...”I’ve been eating healthy, cut my portions way back, and exercising”... that’s all they need to know. If they want more specifics, “ then add high protein, low carb, no sugar... say it’s Keto”... that’s not even a lie. It’s no ones business. You don’t owe anyone an explanation. It’s your journey! -

Any April 2021 surgeries?!
WanderingHeart replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Blueslily I am scheduled for April 6. Doing pre-op diet and it’s been rough. I’m on liquids, protein drinks, 2 lean proteins, and non-starchy veggies. I’m hungry, cranky, nauseous, and I have a constant headache! And today, I took magnesium thinking it would help and I learned all about the phrase people use here “never trust a fart.” It was completely embarrassing to run up the stairs past my partner and kids with my pants in my hand, half naked. My partner, luckily, is amazing and supportive and playful. He told me he **** his pants lots of times in the army bc of the diet and regimen. And he keeps making fart sounds to make me laugh. That’s all we can do ! -
Ugg. So sorry for your moms BS comment. Not cool. Not ok. You deserve better. You are human and therefore worthy of feeling beautiful and good about yourself at any size. I've long been sick of hearing comments from people that link beauty, worthiness and self-worth to body size.

Looking for thoughts and recs for breast + arm lift.
Kris77 replied to questin's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Hey@Questin I was sleeved in July 2018. I did wait to get PS until this last Jan 2021. For me it was a goal i set for myself pre sleeve. I told myself. Get the weight off and get to goal. Once to goal keep it off for a whole year after getting to goal. I did. And then I ended up waiting some more time after that...I waited longer bc of several reasons. Did research on surgeon I wanted and when the time was right. I Just did a breast lift w augmentation and a full tummy tuck a few months ago in Jan. Best decision next to getting sleeved of course that I e ever made. Very happy. I’d say research your surgeon well though. You will see there are a bunch of awesome people in here who had done their arms done and had great results. I’m in Texas and used a surgeon from here. Dr. Mahlon Kerr. He is in Round Rock, Texas. He is amazing and I’m so happy with my results. I wish you the best on your PS journey. It’s exciting and such a reward for all the hard work put in. Let us know what you decide to do so we can follow your PS Journey too! -
Any March Surgeries?
ColoRad Gal replied to Hopefulin2021's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 5 days post-op. Today I had a setback. Bad gas pain (not the gas from surgery), nausea, can't fit in all my fluids. I'm focusing on the water and not so much the protein shakes because of the nausea. Just a bummer of a day bc I felt like I should feel better by now. AND I have to put my scale away bc I'm not seeing any weight loss. Patience is a virtue I guess. -
2 week Liquid Diet Cheat
WanderingHeart replied to TexasSleeveGal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey I am also struggling with pre-op. Today was my first day. I’m allowed liquids, protein shakes, 2 lean solid proteins like eggs, chicken, Greek yogurt, and vegetables. No fat/carbs. I feel like I’m starving, my head hurts, and I have a short fuse with my twins. Considering that all these docs have different pre-op diets, it feels somewhat arbitrary and I hate doing things that don’t feel meaningful. So I just re-frame it in my mind “this is a challenge I can overcome and I’ll feel good knowing I did if.” Other diets felt pointless after awhile bc I knew I couldn’t sustain it forever. I’m like - 10 days - I can do this! I’m just hoping it gets easier!! -
Any April 2021 surgeries?!
WanderingHeart replied to KidaandRoux's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I tried orgain, iconic, and pirq. Orgain offers plant based and grass fed; iconic are grass fed dairy shakes and pirq is all plant based (pea protein + almond). The pirq also has maca and turmeric so I ordered it for the nutritional boost. Honestly they mostly taste the same! There are some varieties in flavor but they all have the same protein aftertaste. But I got them because I try to eat clean/organic when I can. -
I "snuck" having WLS
lizonaplane replied to chiquitatummy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm not good at keeping quiet about my life so I've posted it on facebook and told most people, including my line manager. I didn't tell everyone at work, although I will most likely have to take a month off from work because I won't be able to lift my suitcase to travel for work, so I said I will be likely have to take a month off "for surgery" this summer. Many of my co-workers have never met me because we all work in different parts of the country remotely (even before COVID) so they likely don't even know I'm overweight. Everyone has been supportive, except for one person on facebook who had a bad experience with her own WLS and insists that weight has nothing to do with health and that we're all tools of the media, etc, etc. She gained her weight back and now doesn't even try to eat healthy, based on her food pix. She got into it on my page with people who were trying to be supportive, but everyone knew that was her bs and I don't care. My family is supportive and I have friends who have told me about their own surgeries and offered to talk to me any time. I've been very lucky. -
How many calories should you consume 5 weeks out?
Ms. D posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was reading an old posts regarding calorie requirements after gastric bypass. I am five weeks post op and can eat 800 calories a day. I get 100 grams of protein and all my water in. My carbs are staying at 20 or less. My weight loss feels slow although overall I’m not really sure it is. Maybe my expectations are right. I started at 257 day of surgery and five weeks out i have lost 22 lbs. I haven’t always followed the diet above. Early on I ate much more carbs but last week upped my protein and cut my carbs. Fats also increased of course and this caused some increase in calories. The past post I read were encouraging people to eat more calories and even to get up to 1000 as soon as possible and stay low carb and weight would come off. People also encouraged it bc it helps your metabolism they said which helps with the weight loss. But I am still afraid my calories are too high and feel weird bc I can eat much more than the two tablespoons my nurse told me I should be eating at means. But if I ate like she said I’d definitely take in way less that 800 calories a day. also thought 320 of my calories are still from protein shakes. So like around 500 calories is food. What are thoughts around this? -

Whole-Food Plant-Based Nutrition Resources
Hop_Scotch replied to PollyEster's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
My diet is not plant based but I do eat a variety of foods and happy to eat vegetarian or vegan when I visit my sisters (one vegan, the other vegetarian) or go to their preferred restaurants. As much as possible I will buy free range and locally/grass fed and the local farmers market is excellent. Fortunately where I live is a food bowl. -
Whole-Food Plant-Based Nutrition Resources
WanderingHeart replied to PollyEster's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
My naturopath recommended Garth Davis as a resource, but I’m struggling with the idea of being 100% plant-based. We buy organic/grass fed meat from small farms and I’m okay with it - we are not huge meat eaters anyways. Anyone strive for a balance? I’m starting my pre-op diet in a week and I ordered Pirq and Iconic, one is plant based protein drink and the other is grass fed. -
You should proud because you were honest with the psychologist and yourself! You are setting yourself up for success by being open and honest. I know right now it definitely does not seem like a positive and it is frustrating, but you will get there! So many people aren’t honest and pass the psych, but later fail bc they weren’t truthful with themselves! Your not alone! Good luck!

I am in a very similar situation that you are in. I have pcos and high BP. I am done with my requirements just waiting in a date. I actually just asked the dietician these questions. She told me something I didn’t realize after all these years with PCOS. She said that I should try to be as dairy free as possible bc dairy causes inflammation with pcos. I was drinking premier protein shakes and she said stop bc those are dairy based. She recommended a really good plant based protein powder to mix with almond milk. Hope this help! Your not alone!
