    Insulin Worries after DS

    Your PCP may or may not have much experience with weight loss surgery. What about your endocrinologist? I doubt very much that they would not check your blood sugar before sending you home without your insulin and other meds, as @RickM said. But talk to your surgery center about what your PCP said and your concerns, but don't cancel your surgery. Even if you can't immediately go off your meds, there are lots of other health benefits to surgery and you might in time be able to go off the meds. The goal in life isn't to have the fewest pills; it's to live the best life, with or without pills. I take about 18 pills a day, none of which I will be able to stop after surgery because they are for a condition that is not caused by my weight. (The meds cause weight gain, but that's another issue.) I am still having surgery, because it affects my quality of life to be so heavy, and is going to lead to other health problems down the road.
  2. I had the sleeve in 2013 at 274 and my lowest was 170. I regained to 260 in 2017. I mainly wanted a revision for the weight gain but I too have Gerd and I didn’t know at the time it was caused by the sleeve. I thought it was normal to have heart burn. I’ve gotten back down to 233 in the summer last year 2020. I am currently I’m at 255. I’m having my revision to the RNY in about 5 hours but I’ll let you know how it goes with the weight loss.

    Gained weight

    It's very likely just a temporary weight gain due to the three or four week stall or just the change from liquids/pureed foods to soft. It happens. Keep on your post op guidelines and you will be fine.

    2 months out, fluid issues?

    It’s unlikely to be fluid retention but it would be your best interests to have your kidney function checked before looking at taking diuretics. Have you spoken with your surgeon or your dietician? Ask your dietician to review your diet & activity. 1000 calories seems a lot at 2 months but every plan is different & if you’re more active you can consume more calories. Stalls are common through out the weight loss phase where we don’t lose but weight gain like you’ve identified isn’t. Have you continued to lose inches even though the scale has gone up? Are you weighing yourself on the same set of scales, in the same place, at about the same time? Are you weighing & logging everything you eat & drink each day to ensure you’re not accidentally consuming more? I encourage you to go back to your medical team. Good luck.

    Sorry I don't have any helpful advice on losing the weight, but I just wanted to say your bariatric team is there to help you. It is really common for pregnancy to cause weight gain, so you shouldn't be embarrassed about that! Especially since you've worked so hard to get back to your goal weight (but even if that wasn't the case, you have a new baby! cut yourself a break). I'm sure they've seen other people with similar issues, so I hope they are helpful.

    Barring any medical reasons eg thyroid issues, compromised metabolism for other reasons or medication that causes weight gain, we gain weight when we eat calories over what our bodies use for energy. We can only speculate and a couple of things to be considered are eating a lot more calories than realising eg very calorie dense food; or secret eating.

    Do I have an eating disorder?

    You can try using BetterHelp and stating in your intake form that you are specifically looking for someone that specializes in eating disorders. I tried to do that, but I didn't really have much luck because I have a history of other issues that they picked up on. You can always switch therapists with them. I just stuck with the person I was matched with because it worked well enough and it turns out I don't really have an eating disorder, I just eat too much too often and take medications that cause weight gain.   8. Man, this brought up a lot for me. I grew up and had SnackWells in the pantry and SlimFast under the counter at all times. My mom was an 80s diet aficionado. Anything and everything that was diet was her life. I was slim after puberty, but was made fun of a lot as a kid for being overweight. After college, mental illness took its toll and so did some of the medication I was on- especially on my scale. I finally decided to get weight loss surgery last year after 10 years of trying to get rid of the extreme weight gain that had occurred on my meds. Before surgery it was a huge topic of conversation with my mom about diets and weight and what she was trying next. It was exhausting. I found a lot of grace and support from body positivity advocates and I really started drawing some hard boundaries with what I will and won't talk about with my mom. She still talks about her body negatively and I just either don't engage if I don't have the emotional fortitude, or I will counter with something positive if I can. I have learned over the last few years that you can love your body and still work on things that you want to change. All the things muala94 mentioned, mobility, stamina, feeling freer and not necessarily getting that sense of freedom from food are things that I was looking for, but I really wanted to stop hating my body for doing nothing more than existing in the way that it did. During the pandemic it felt safe to pursue this surgery because I didn't have to tell anyone. I didn't have to explain myself or say what happened or have all of these conversations about someone's opinion of my body- positive or negative. I could just do the work and figure it out for myself. I dread some of my family mentioning it in the future. I don't want to be congratulated for what they saw was a deficiency. I don't see my body that way. I don't want to have people tell me that they feel better about what my body looks like now, because it is still mine and I feel protective over what it was when it was bigger. What I am trying to get at it, I really get the feeling when you say that you don't want to hear any more spewing of derision from people about a body that deserved to be loved then and now. Boundaries really helped me. It takes time. My mother is very stubborn and I have been pushing against her 'helpful' commentary my whole life. I imagine it will be that was forever. But what worked for me was telling her very bluntly that she can help in the way she is asked. She can support me, ask me how I am feeling, go for walks, or we can just sit enjoy each others company. Unsolicited advice isn't welcome. I will no longer have conversations about my weight or food or the morality of a Snickers. It isn't an easy process especially when some parents see independence or boundaries as an insult or as a jab at their control as parental figures. I hope your therapist can help you navigate the process, and hopefully if your family is open to working through this with you so you can all get to a better place together. Oh, and if you watch Shrill, I found a lot of Aidy Bryant's character dealing with her mom about food and weight a really good example of trying to have these tough conversations.
  9. Thanks for the link! Luckily, my hubby may not understand teenage girls, but he does know when to listen to the mama or else! I will share that with him for sure. I absolutely believe it can cause weight gain. I mean - don't most of us to some extent try to do the exact opposite of what our parents want especially when we're teenagers! I love therapy too. It's why my oldest has survived this long. There were years there when I was sure only one of us was gonna make it! Good luck, and BTW - I think figuring out the root cause of an issue is a point so many people miss so you are already ahead of the game.
  10. Hello! It’s been a long time since I’ve been on these boards! I was sleeved in 2011 and am now scheduled for revision to MGB in June. my question is directed to those of you who chose revision due to weight gain, not because of GERD, not that I don’t appreciate the view points of you all who revised due to GERD but because I really want to hear form folks whose primary reason for revision was to address weight regain. i am almost back up to my highest weight pre sleeve and I see such mixed results. What has your experience if you had revision to actually lose weight? Was it worth the expense? Did you get the results you were hoping for?

    Artificial Sweeteners?

    There are so many myths and old wive’s tales with Bariatrics, I’ve never seen anything like it. The majority of successful weight loss patients eat artificial sweeteners. Unless you have a sensitivity to one (and there are plenty of other options), enjoy in moderation . Prior to my surgery, I spent years going back and forth between diets recommended to me by medical professionals or people in the fitness industry. I spent 3-6 months at a time not eating any artificial sweeteners because they’re “toxic” and cause “weight gain” according to my chiro, Dr at the time, and a trainer friend. I lost 5lbs on average in those times with high activity levels. Completely not worth it.
  12. I haven't seen a nutritionist yet, I believe my first class appointment is late May. I eat small meals throughout the day, I found myself hungry a lot and I usually only eat 2oz at a time. But I usually eat something every three hours. But I guess I keep more tab on it, however still being in the puree stage, I wasn't expecting any weight gain. I'm not sure if anyone can share their experience as well? I would love to know that im not alone haha

    Artificial Sweeteners?

    So I was watching these videos by one of the WLS Surgeons and he isn't pro-sweeterners! He thinks it can also spike Insulin by your body responding to the sweet taste in the mouth. And can also cause weight gain! I do have medical knowledge and Insulin is only secreted in response to Glucose molecules attaching to the receptors in your Pancreas, so him extrapolating Insulin release to the taste itself kinda doesn't make sense to me! May be Slpenda, aspartame etc may not be the best alternatives but natural sweeteners seem safe so far especially how Keto diet is revolves a lot around such natural sweeteners! Thoughts? Are you a fan? Whether or not sweeteners are safe to be used in your weight loss journey esp cause many of us may not tolerate sugar well for life! https://youtu.be/DTIK8n0WTBU
  14. I had surgery in March. I told my husband initially. I eventually told my parents and was surprised they were supportive. My husband agreed that he expected my dad to tell me just to eat better and exercise more like him. My father was not kind about my weight gain. I didn’t tell any other friends or family. I’m six weeks out and still haven’t told friends or family. Only my manicurist knows, and my son’s head of school figured it out (she’s considering the same procedure with the same doctor). My coworkers, neighbors, and some friends knew I was having hernia surgery (which was true since they repaired my hernia at the same time). A couple people asked me if I was doing weight loss surgery when they figured out I was on a liquid diet. I was shocked because I didn’t think I was that big to even need surgery. I just told them it was hernia surgery. If I choose to tell people down the road, that’s ok; but, I’m not offering it up. I just tell people I’m on a diet,

    Feeling discouraged!

    all of the above posters are correct. With hospital weight gain, it's from the IV fluids. Some people come back from the hospital 10 lbs heavier than when they went in. It can take a week or so for it to work its way out of your system.

    Skin issues after RNY

    No, I didn’t have weight gain on HRT but couldn’t shift the weight I had put during peri menopause & early menopause before starting HRT. I remember people used to complain about weight gain on the pill but I would actually lose a couple of kg. We had Cobb & Co in Australia which carried passengers & the mail. Can’t recall a tv program about it except for the odd documentary. There is a Cobb & Co museum in Toowoomba which is close to where I grew up but I’ve never been. Isn’t that the way though. You never go to the places near you but will travel interstate or overseas to see museums & places of historical significance.

    pre-op

    No way that 1 cup of yogurt + some brown sugar and cocoa caused a 5lb weight gain, most of that is likely water if you stuck to your diet otherwise. Work closely with the nutritionist at your surgeon’s office to find a plan that is sustainable for you and hang in there. I have never eaten as little as 10g carb/day during this entire process and have been very successful. I think the lowest I ever did was 25g carb/day and that was quite short term. Now that I am nearing maintenance my guideline, per my surgeon’s office, is 70-80g protein/day and to just keep my carbs lower than my protein. It gets better!

    The Sleeve vs Bypass?

    I have PCOS and few weeks back I was in the same dilemma to choose Sleeve over Bypass after reading some of the sleevers here having lost the same weight to reach their normal BMI. But then some more research showed how Bypass patients in the long run have it little more easy to maintain the weight than sleevers. With PCOS I wanted 1 surgery to give me the maximum benefit, don't want to return back to the OR either! Ofc there's no guarantee what may happen in future and how many surgeries one may need. Plus many Bypass patients have also struggled with weight gain while many sleevers have kept it off. In the end this surgery is a tool and we definitely will have to work hard at it. But I feel more comforting with the Bypass decision than have a *what if* moment in future. Plus the risk of hernia and GERD is more with sleeve than Bypass. So I am in a happy place with the decision by mine to go with Bypass!

    I have not but only about 2 months out of surgery. Steroids will be the culprit to that weight gain I believe. I would suggest quit eating chocolate and bisquits (Are you talking about what we Yanks call cookies?)
  20. I am weighing multiple times a day. I weigh myself almost every time I use the bathroom! Lol! I was going to slow down but I actually think it helps me to see my weight flunctuate. It helps me paint a deeper picture then if I were to weigh in once a week. Especially when I am up a pound or 2 because I know that it's not really true. I like to average out my loss in my head. It would be more devastating to do a weekly check up and see my weight go up when it could just be a high water retention day or something. For me to actually consider it weight gain, I tell myself the number has to stay up for at least three days (I do the same with loss). That helps me not go crazy.

    Weight Loss

    I've been keeping track of my weight loss and knew it would slow down once I started getting off the liquid phase and started introducing food back into my diet, but I've gained a pound now. I'm not eating unhealthy, aside from some frozen yogurt yesterday. Is it normal to see a pound or two weight gain as your eating food and becoming more active in the beginning?   22. Hi All, Just wanted to know what others have experienced. For some reason I am having daily anxiety. I absolutely can't stand it as it hits out of nowhere at all. I am only 17 days Post-Op, take my vitamins daily, and still taking my Metformin until I am blood tested again. I do not want to go on an anti anxiety medication. I had been on Lexapro for 4 years at which point I put on a lot of weight going from a size 4 to 1-2X. I lost all motivation on working out as well. I went off the Lexapro completely 2 months before surgery and started actually caring about myself which is why I decided to do this surgery so I could get my health back on track. Following my weight gain, I developed diabetes, Apnea (now using a C-Pap for a year) and NASH of the liver. I notice exercise helps with the anxiety for sure but I cant seem to get a decent response from the medical community to help me feel better about this. I asked my surgeon why this sudden onset of anxiety that hits for what seems like no reason at all and his response was if I am eating right and exercising that this could be the cause because of sudden change and that maybe people are treating me differently and all of this is causing anxiety. I then told him no - people are not treating me differently. My family is amazing with all of this and I am working out of the house so have not been around others for them to treat me differently. In my case this is absolutely not the case at all. I pressed on asking if chemical changes in the body could be happening due to the surgery that may be causing this and he said yes. Wondering why I had to keep poking to get that response at all and yet because that was not the first response I am even doubting that. Why not just tell me that since I made it clear I am having these spikes out of nowhere and can't figure out why. I am finding myself overthinking everything right now honestly. Wondering how I will tolerate eating anything at this point or will I ever be able to. My doctor keeps his patients on a 5 week post-op liquid diet before you go on to a pureed / soft food diet for another 3 weeks. So unsure of myself right now and considered I made a huge mistake and so very much want to get passed this feeling more than anything in the world. Part of me is happy I did the surgery for my health and the results of weight loss I have seen thus far but another part wonders why I could not get back on track on my own and worried about long term complications. Like once I start eating will I have a sudden stomach leak, will I have no ability to hold down food or end up on liquids for the rest of my life? Will I ever be able to enjoy a glass of wine again and comfortably get on with life in a better more healthy way. Will I end up with Gallstones that cause another surgery or will I have stomach blockage in the future and how will I know if I do? I want to celebrate my choice to have done this and enjoy the weight loss but instead I am having so much self doubt and it's making me miserable. My liver health alone was cause to do this along with the diabetes so what is my damn problem? It is really hard to deal with this and I'm frankly pissed at myself for letting the anxiety get to me. I am considering going back on a lower dose of Lexapro again at least until this simmers down as I am hoping this is a chemical change in my body due to part of the stomach being removed and all the dietary changes just concerned it will make me not give a crap again and go lazy. IDK, if I knew factually this was all going to be a temporary reality then I would do it until the body goes back to normal.
  23. Okay, so I love me some fake sugar, but it makes me pee like every half hour! I was reading that at least some of the artificial sweeteners are diuretics, but they are ALSO bladder irritants, so they are even more likely to cause you to run to the potty. I also intersperse my diet juice/iced tea/crystal light with water throughout the day and drink a ton, so it's a struggle. Note: I'm not interested in your belief that aspartame/splenda/sucralose cause cancer or weight gain. Those theories have been fully debunked.
  24. If you are taking any medication whatsoever, get in touch with your surgeon and ask him/her to review the prescriptions in order to determine if any have weight gain as a side effect. In particular, there are several prescriptions prescribed for psychological/psychiatric issues that can cause great weight gain. There are other non-psyche meds that, while not causing weight gain, tend to inhibit losses. For example, in one interesting study, researchers found that WLS patients who took Metformin post-surgery lost much less weight and plateaued while those who didn't take it showed much more drastic weight loss.
