Help! Kaiser or Anthem BC (in California)?

Wow! My PCP put in the referral today and I have a connection in Health Ed to get an idea if I'll have to go through the classes. It depends on what my PCP entered for the referral and how they feel about why I'm making the decision for the revision. I'll take whatever path they lay out. I want it done so that I can have a do-over and finally have some success. One more question... Did you have you have your procedure at West LA (Cadillac)?

    Sleeve to Bypass

I'm on a fast track to sleeve to bypass revision. My sleeve was wonderful lost 75lbs but ended up getting pregnant. The only reason the changing is due to a hiatal hernia and my severe GERD. I love everything my sleeve did for myself. I am nervous about changing. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    After yesterday's seminar

Whichever surgery you go with there is always going to be risks and some complications. Make sure you do ALOT of research and pick a good surgeon that has experience with either the lap band or the sleeve. I was thinking about the sleeve too but I would rather having something thats reverseable and doesn't require cutting my stomach in half. When you are talking about slippage its mostly caused by the patient not eating/drinking what they should and stretching the pouch that is made with the lap band. Some cases its the surgeon's placement of the band that could cause a slippage (in most cases this doesn't happen). A good friend of mine just had her revision surgery for a slipped band because she wasn't sticking to her doctors guidelines and not living the "banded" life as everyone calls it. I'm not trying to scare ya here but I'm getting banded on May 21st and it took me a year to figure out what surgery I was going to go with. Like I said make sure you research both surgerys as much as you can and pick a really good surgeon for either of the surgerys! -Amine

    Nervous and excited

With the sleeve you can eat whatever you want after the post op diet. I do have trouble telling when I am full. I have to stop eating by looking at the portion and knowing how much I can eat. If I eat until I am full at the table, I am too full and uncomfortable 15 min. later. There are a lot of us who are band to sleeve revisions and we are all thrilled to be rid of the band. As far as I know, there are only a couple of people who have trouble eating early in the day. I have been able to eat and drink right away from day 2 of surgery. I had to force myself to slow down when I was in the hospital, because I was supposed to only drink 2 oz every 15 min. I could have easily drank whatever they put in front of me. Feel free to ask anything. We are all glad to help. I revised to the sleeve after I gained 15 lbs back from having my band unfilled. I was a self pay though.

My Journey So Far With Kaiser

Thanks for this thread. I found it during a search as I too have Kaiser. I'm waiting for a revision from Lap Band to Vertical Gastric Sleeve, and my tentative date is April 3rd, 2012. Kaiser has been great insurance for me and my husband. We pay out of pocket for our insurance, and our Primary Care Physician is probably the most caring physician that I've ever had.
  6. I'm wondering if anyone has had any denials through Molina or Medicaid insurances for REVISION surgery???? If so please let me know the outcome of it??? I am waiting for my approval and I am apprehensive about this!!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Surgery Day! and beyond: Part 2

Girl, yay! I am so excited for you. I'm glad your pain is so well managed. I had a drain after my revision to bypass and I hated every second of it, so more power to you for dealing with four of them. Can't wait to see the end result, especially the dragon tattoo!

    Clear liquid diet

Get Better than Bullion. It tastes so much better than premade broths and they have a ton of flavors. It was the only thing that got me through liquids! Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt
  9. That's prob a benefit for sure, I kept mine very tight right up till the day of surgery. My revision was in Ohio.
  10. So, I am nearly 15 years (yes years) postop. I started at 315 and plummeted to 142 within 10 months of surgery. I was super happy but I was also sick. I didn't have energy, I looked sick...but I was SKINNY! For the first time in my adult life, I wore a SMALL! I loved and hated it at the same time. Then I was told to gain weight because due to all the excess skin, I was really underweight and it was NOT healthy for me. Well, long story short...I can eat pretty much anything and not dump. Then my portions started growing and my snacking came back. I gained, I lost, I gained, I lost...you all know how that goes. I got back up to 230 and was miserable again. I started doing VERY well earlier this year and lost nearly 25 pounds of regain, then COVID-19 struck and has me working from home. This led right back to horrible habits and not as much movement (I didn't even have to walk to my car!). The company I work for has wonderful programs to help get motion and nutrition back on track. Well, that is if you are able bodied (I have bad knees and am just trying to keep replacements at bay as long as I can) and can eat like a normal person. The PT and nutritionist had me doing things that just didn't work for me...not once but TWICE. I told them over and over I couldn't exercise on my knees nor could I eat the portions they were assigning to me. Frustrated, I started researching revisions. I found one I was seriously contemplating, regardless of insurance coverage (I was THAT desperate). I was on the verge of calling my GP for a referral when I thought, "What about going back to basics"? So, about two weeks ago, I found some sites (this is one of them!) with bariatric specific meal plans, food, vitamins, gadgets, etc. I took the plunge and ordered protein powders, protein snacks, meal replacements and changed my vitamin routine to the 1 A Day on here. I bought shaker bottles for my shakes, 15 minute increment water bottles to make me drink my water (if you knew me, you would know I HATE water), and I also cleared two shelves in my pantry for JUST ME. It's now been just over a week and I am down 4 pounds. I have so much more energy that my husband was like "who are you and where is my wife"! I have already noticed a difference in some of my clothes - no more dancing routine putting on my yoga pants! It's not easy, but I have to remember where I was and where I want to be once again! Sorry this was so long but I started typing and couldn't stop!
  11. I recieved the lap band in Oct. of 2010 and initially lost 50 lbs with it. Family emergencies and stress lost me my focus and I gained almost all of it back. I could not get pass the first fill of my band without complications on regurg, nausea, and vomiting. All we did was fill, take out, refill, take out, etc. I have reached a point and my surgeons agree that I need to do something because this is not working for me. Feb. 20, I have a meeting and a decision will be made in regards to the band and a possible revision. I am scared and concerned. Have already started to research more on the sleeve and am trying to learn from others who have gone through this. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Well, it's official...I was denied!! Apparently, I have not gained enough weight for CIGNA to approve my revision surgery:( I'm disappointed but knew they were going to do this. Apparently, my surgeon is going to have a "peer to peer" with the medical director this week. I remember having to fight so hard with my insurance at the time for the initial lapband surgery but I did it and I have faith I will do it again!!

    Lap Band Conversion to Sleeve

Bless you - You sure have had a struggle with the band. Hopefully, this will be the new beginning and ticket for you. I've also checked into OCC - Dr. Ortiz... Is this where you are going? They quoted me a 6 night stay (Marriott) and revision - $9k total.

    Choosing a surgery ...

Hi there I also had a band fitted and then within 6 months was diagnosed with cervical cancer, now 6 years on had the band removed and am on a pathway to revision to sleeve or bypass. Both bypass and sleeve are restrictive so they will restrict the amount you can eat but if you graze all day you can overeat. Sent from my VFD 700 using BariatricPal mobile app

    Failed Bander

I had a lapband placed on Oct. 10, 2005. I lost 80 pounds but found there were always foods I could not tolerate. Foods were always getting stuck, despite following all the rules. I had my surgery in Reno and moved to Los Angeles. I work in the health care field, and we have a bariatric program. I notified our bariatric supervisor that I was vomiting all the time. She sent me to my PCP. She sent me to a surgeon who was intimidated by the UM department. They did an endoscopy and the GI specialist said it slipped. Then, I had an UGI. They said it was just high. I continued to vomit all the time and the surgeon was afraid to challenge the MD in charge of UM. I chose to change medical groups and had another UGI because I knew surgery would never happen at my place of employment. Hindsight is 20/20. I should have insisted they submit it and then appeal. I had a physiological reason for the medical complications and could have qualified for revision. I saw a surgeon who knew to remove the fluid from the band. That stopped the fear that I would choke to death. I was getting ready to have the band removed and have a VSG when Kaiser notified me the doctor could only remove the band. I was told to see another surgeon at Kaiser and on June 24, 2011, I did that. I was 155 pounds instead of the 134 I had gotten down to. He said I had to have surgery that next Monday, but due to my esophagus being so thin with the possibility of erosion, he said the VSG couldn't be done for a year. I had the band removed and was I depressed. I was told I would gain 50 pounds and to be careful with what I ate. I have a surgery date finally, but I got a call on Friday asking me to phone the surgeon's office. Of course, my imagination is running wild. Are they changing the date or are they simply scheduling the pre op visit? I decided to repeat the bariatric classes. I am not learning much, but I figure anything new that I learn is a plus. I keep having to purchase larger clothes, and what I have for casual wear and professional wear for work is no longer fitting. I have feelings of self hate, and I know that is not healthy. Ultimately, I want to be healthy and lean. I know it will happen soon, but the waiting game is a nightmare. There is one other girl in my class that also had to have a band removed. Misery sure does like company. Anyway, that is my surgery of success, failure, and then the hope of future success again. I am glad I found this forum and will visit it frequently. Joyce
  16. I had my surgical consultation today for revision, but on the off chance that it is not deemed medically necessary for revision, I do qualify for bariatric surgery in general, repeating all of the requirements as if it were a new procedure. My question is regarding Cigna coverage. Most plans require a monitored 3, 6 or 12 month diet/nutrition/weight loss management through PCP or somewhere similar. Cigna's policy says NOTHING about this, only that "a statement from a physician other than the surgeon, that the individual has failed previous attempts to achieve and maintain weight loss by medical management" - it gives no other requirements or indicators. I called Cigna today to inquire and they couldn't tell me anything more about this. So, for those of you that have been approved in the past few months (Cigna's policy requirements look to be effective 10/9/18 through 7/15/19), what did you provide for this? I have to have a letter from my primary anyway that recommends bariatric surgery. Would this be the same letter or separate? And what did you submit/have your PCP write to say that you had failed previous attempts? Thanks in advance for your help!
  17. Hang in there ladies!!!! 3 weeks ago, I was getting in the bed as quickly as possible, not because I was excited for surgery, but because I was so hungry and just wanted to eat! But, I got up that Monday, went to the hospital, and had my surgery....my stomach doesn't feel any different at all, and hasn't since surgery. It doesn't feel like any of it is missing. The best thing.... I don't get hungry at all. I have been struggling with Protein, but I'm doing my best. I am in stage 3 of my post op diet, and I literally make myself eat, just so I have my nutrition. My family always has a dinner out on the weekends, and although the steaks, baked potatoes, buffalo wings and pizza all look amazing, there is no way I will put that mess in my body again! You can still eat healthy, and enjoy it at the same time. You just have to improvise, and learn to make revisions in your diet. I was 150 in high school, just 12 years ago. But after having 3 boys, over the last 10 years, I focused on them, and ate when I had the time, when I was sad, happy, mad...it didn't matter, I just enjoyed eating. It became mental for me, and even now...I still have a few lapses of that same mentality, not hungry, just wanting it...you just have to be stronger than the mind, and go for your goals!! Good luck ladies!!! Prayers to you all for a safe surgery!!!
  18. Hey all you September Sleevers. How is everyone doing? I am 3 weeks PO today. Feel great! Back to the gym this am. I have been walking in the mornings since its so nice here in Tejas. (rare) So just did some cycling, and some arms. Tried not to do anything that would pull on the tummy. I am down 20 lbs. Which 7 was pre op diet. But happy. I know I will loose slower since I was revision. But if I can stay 20 lbs a month, I will be one happy camper. Lets all check in and see how everyone is doing now that we are on the loser's bench.
  19. Yeah I do have extra skin but it’s easy to hide under clothes. Maybe someday I will get the extra skin removed. i am still actually losing weight… I haven’t stabilized yet. My goal weight was 195 but I just kept losing. My intake that I can do seems to be more in line with the limited quantities of bypass patients rather than sleeve. But everyone is different, so who knows. i am told it is impossible to lose “too much” and that the weight loss will eventually Peter off and stop. I revised my goal weight down to 165 pounds which would put me at ten pounds more to go. the way my body seems to work is I stall for a long time, then drop a ton of weight quickly (ten pounds) …. Then stall again for a while… then drop more…. i have sensitive skin and the excess skin does cause rashes to occur. I get them under my breasts, in my midline area by my belly button and with the skin overhang in the pelvic region. They say that if you have documented skin conditions like I do then they will take care of the extra skin… but it’s recommended to wait a couple years. I think it also has to be overhanging by a certain amount. (I think I remember my pcp saying it has to hang lower than the pelvis bone)

    Ibuprofen 1 Yr Post Op

I initially had the sleeve and was told I could maybe try it at 18 months out, but it was very heavily discouraged. I had a revision to bypass and was told absolutely no forever.

    protein shake revision!

I made some rookie mistakes yesterday when I added fruit and vegetables to my protein shake. I put so much in that there wasn't room for hardly any ice. By the end of the drink, it just tasted like lukewarm beet juice. Today's is much better! 1 scoop of market pantry chocolate protein 3 tablespoons of organic fat free vanilla yogurt 1/2 large organic cucumber 1 handful of organic blueberries lots of ice This is a much smoother taste. And according to the interwebs, cucumber is a natural anti-inflammatory!

    SLEEVE regret

I have never regretted the sleeve for a second. From pumping the pain meds, to changing my diet, to stalls. It’s all good. I would only get a revision if I got GERD, and no sign of it 14 months out.
  24. My doctor is recommended I have a bypass revision done (currently 5 years put on my sleeve) as I have severe GERD and weight gain. For those that have had this done….. which bypass did they do? Full ? Mini? Or? and did it help? Thanks in advance.
  25. I had a full RNY revision from VSG due to reflux and a hiatal hernia and it really helped me! I wish I had just had the RNY from the start. So happy I had the revision!
